'Important for seamers to retain focus' – Sreesanth

Sreesanth, the Indian fast bowler, has said it is important for fast bowlers to maintain their focus in the wake of early success and fame

Cricinfo staff21-May-2010Sreesanth, the Indian fast bowler, has said it is important for pace bowlers to maintain their focus in the wake of early success and fame. Speaking to Harsha Bhogle on Cricinfo’s audio show , Sreesanth said it was difficult for India’s fast bowlers to make the transition from domestic to international cricket, especially when playing overseas, and added that fear of injury and the urge to play on a long-term basis could be reasons for many promising young seamers to cut down on their pace after the first few games.”Focus is surely important, but again everyone lives their own personal life as well. As long as he knows the thin line between foolishness and bravery, that is very important,” Sreesanth said. “If you have a mentor or someone is looking up for you, with so much of money and entertainment involved, if there is one coach or family member, who actually keeps an eye on the player and if the player is ready to listen to them, you are alright. If you are talented and hardworking, nothing should bother you.”India have used 12 fast bowlers in the 68 ODIs they have played since the start of 2008. When asked if immense pressure to perform was the reason behind many struggling to keep their places in the side, Sreesanth said: “Honestly, you need to be performing rather than complaining. There is stress and there is pressure, especially when you play in Indian conditions. It’s actually tough to get on and start performing. It’s a challenge for a fast bowler, especially in the Powerplay of a one-day game, but you must endure those stressful moments.”Maybe the bowlers are planning to play in the long term, maybe 10 to 15 years instead of doing the job that is given to you,” Sreesanth said of the reason behind bowlers dropping in pace. “Maybe it’s the fear of injury. It’s always better to give your best every single day. I think that may be the reason – trying to conserve your energy for the next game than giving your best today.”Sreesanth made his debut against England in March 2006 and starting off his international career in home conditions, he said, made his transition to the highest level easier than for others. “If you’re playing in the subcontinent it’s a little easier because you’ve actually played at the Ranji Trophy level,” he said. “To cope with the international standards of batsmen, especially with most of them who don’t play in the domestic circuit, it’s tough for youngsters to come in and do their job. It takes a lot of patience and hard work to make a strong impact in the international circuit straight from the domestic circuit.”I’ve been lucky. I remember the first series we played was against England in India. I was lucky enough to bowl on an Indian track and then go abroad.”A balance between both strength and skill is an important ingredient for bowling fast along with accuracy, Sreesanth said. “Gym is very important, strength is surely important. But if you forget your skill…..you’ve got to work on your wrists, on your bowling and spot-bowling. What we forget after playing for our country is the spot-bowling which we grew up with in the countryside.”Sreesanth’s eight-wicket haul in the Johannesburg Test in 2006, which helped India win their first Test in South Africa, is considered to be among his best performances. But he rated his 5 for 75 against Sri Lanka in his comeback Test in Kanpur last year as his best outing.”I’ll rate that performance surely, as it is the only Test we have ever won there,” he said of his spell at the Wanderers. “But I think the comeback match against Sri Lanka in Kanpur – that was the best I bowled. I was under a lot of stress and pressure, and I never thought I’ll play for India again. Upon getting a chance in Kanpur, on those flattest of tracks, I could get the ball to reverse…I rate that as my best spell.”

Tottenham: talkSPORT make on-air Sam Johnstone claim

Tottenham have joined West Ham in the race to sign West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, according to talkSPORT.

The Lowdown: Johnstone’s future…

Johnstone has been at The Hawthorns since 2018 and has made 154 appearances for The Baggies – 23 of which have come in the Championship this season.

The 28-year-old, labelled as ‘world class’ by Steve Bull, is out of contract in just six months time, with a number of Premier League clubs monitoring his situation.

Antonio Conte currently has Hugo Lloris and loanee Pierluigi Gollini as senior options in goal, and it seems as if Johnstone could well be a target for Spurs heading into the New Year.

The Latest: talkSPORT’s live claim

talkSPORT shared a story on Thursday lunchtime, citing on-air comments from reporter Alex Crook.

Crook claimed that Spurs have joined the likes of Newcastle, Southampton and West Ham in the race to sign Johnstone. He added that Conte is keen to keep hold of Lloris, who is in a similar contract situation to Johnstone, however, the Spurs boss is unsure when it comes to Gollini.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“I’m hearing Tottenham are joining the likes of Newcastle, Southampton and West Ham in showing a definite interest in Sam Johnstone.

“Hugo Lloris is out of contract himself in the summer, he hasn’t agreed a new one and as of January 1st he can sign a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs.

“I am told Antonio Conte does want to keep hold of Hugo Lloris but it would be foolhardy not to look for alternative options.

“I know Antonio Conte isn’t convinced by Pierluigi Gollini – the goalkeeper who they signed from Atalanta in the summer. I don’t think they will be taking up the option to make that permanent.

“Sam Johnstone is very much on Tottenham’s radar.”

The Verdict: Smart move?

Should Spurs not exercise their option to buy clause for Gollini in the summer, they’ll need another shot-stopper ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Johnstone could be the perfect addition, and it appears as if he may well be available on a cut-price deal over the coming weeks due to his contract situation.

You’d expect the Baggies wouldn’t want to risk losing Johnstone for nothing in the summer, so an offer in the region of his £7.2m Transfermarkt valuation could prove to be enough.

The England international would bring Premier League experience to north London, and who knows, he could turn out to be Lloris’ long-term successor, so a transfer appears to be one to keep a close eye on.

Afghanistan player strike averted for now

A crisis meeting between the Afghanistan Cricket Federation and national team players has agreed to establish a four-member group of “impartial” persons to find and present a solution to several of the players’ grievances

Tony Munro07-Jun-2010A crisis meeting between the Afghanistan Cricket Federation and national team players has agreed to establish a four-member group of “impartial” persons to find and present a solution to several of the players’ grievances in “three or four days time” to the ACF chairman, Hazrat Omer Zakhailwal. The agreement has averted a strike, for now at least, by the majority of the leading Afghanistan national players who had threatened to boycott the ICC World Cricket League Division One tournament in Netherlands from July 1-10, unless several conditions were met. These had included the replacement of either the CEO, Dr Aimal Shenwari or Chief Selector, Dr Hamid Shenwari with Raees Ahmadzai, a long term member of the national team who recently retired from Twenty 20 and multi-day cricket. The main cause of disenchantment was a belief within the team the ACF’s CEO, Dr Aimal Shenwari and the Chief Selector, Dr Hamid Shenwari’s backgrounds did not provide them with sufficient knowledge about the game to carry out their positions.Discontent within the team began festering shortly after the World Twenty20 last month. Allrounder Ahmadzai announced his retirement from Twenty20 and multi-day cricket for the national team, allegedly on the understanding a position within the ACF related to team development would be created for him. This did not eventuate and then Ahmadzai was omitted from the WCL Division One squad, although he had declared his availability for the 50-over squad. On top of Ahmadzai’s omission from the Division One squad was the demotion of Mohammad Nabi, widely regarded as the team’s best player, from the vice-captaincy role in favour of the less experienced Mirwais Ashraf. Nabi’s demotion is believed to have resulted partly from a disagreement Nabi and Ahmadzai had with ACFofficials and partly from Ashraf’s performance in the match against South Africa when he was the team’s top scorer with 23 from 22 balls. The captain, Nowroz Mangal, had told Cricinfo prior to the meeting he was strongly in favour of strike action if Dr. Aimal Shenwari and Dr. Hamid Shenwari retained their posts.

Sky reporter drops Coutinho to Spurs news

Speaking live on Sky Sports (via Football Daily), reporter Rob Dorsett has shared some ‘breaking’ Tottenham Hotspur transfer news involving Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye Coutinho move?

According to some reports over this last week, the La Liga attacker is firmly on Tottenham’s radar as transfer chief Fabio Paratici aims to back manager Antonio Conte in the winter market.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, Mundo Deportivo first claimed that the Brazil international ‘would choose’ a move to north London over fellow suitors Newcastle United.

Soon after, El Nacional shared an update that Spurs are willing to table a £16.7 million bid to sign Coutinho this month as Barca president Joan Laporta seeks a buyer, even adding that the Catalan giants may be forced to cash in due to their financial troubles and the fact nobody will meet their asking price.

The Latest: Sky reporter shares live TV news…

Now, as per Dorsett, speaking on Sky Sports (via Football Daily), there has been an update as the reliable broadcaster’s journalist backs Tottenham’s interest with what he’s been told on Thursday.

Shedding light on the alleged six Premier League sides eyeing a move for the 29-year-old, he explained:

“A bit of breaking news for you, if you like, we’re still checking this one out, but Arsenal, Spurs and Newcastle I’ve been told this morning are three clubs amongst those six that are also interested in Philippe Coutinho.”

The Verdict: Get it done?

It is no secret that Spurs have missed Christian Eriksen’s influence as a playmaker since his 2020 departure to Inter, so it is no surprise to us that the Lilywhites are weighing Coutinho.

The South American is a proven player in the English top flight, having enjoyed a prolific spell at Liverpool before his switch to La Liga, and we believe he could genuinely be an astute purchase depending on Barca’s and Coutinho’s demands.

His £380,000-per-week wages could be a stumbling block but Laporta’s eagerness to shift the player could gift Tottenham an advantage in negotiations as they have already been linked with a cut price offer.

This will certainly be interesting to follow but, if Paratici can get it done, it would be a real boost for Conte, adding a player who has racked up 41 goals and 37 assists in 152 previous Premier League appearances.

Openers extend lead after seamers dominate

A last-wicket stand of 55 between Rikki Clarke and Boyd Rankin gave Warwickshire their first batting bonus point for five games, but they ended the second day well adrift at Chester-le-Street

29-Jun-2010
ScorecardA last-wicket stand of 55 between Rikki Clarke and Boyd Rankin gave Warwickshire their first batting bonus point for five games, but they ended the second day well adrift at Chester-le-Street. They also had coach Ashley Giles on the field after Jim Troughton and Andrew Miller were forced off while the Durham openers, Michael Di Venuto and Mark Stoneman, both survived slip chances to reach 78 without loss in the second innings. That gave them a lead of 142 after dismissing Warwickshire for 224, with Clarke the last man out for a classy 68, leaving Rankin unbeaten on 10. With the ball swinging and some help in the pitch for Durham’s quartet of seamers, Clarke was the only batsman to look settled, although he was dropped on 40 by Callum Thorp at gully. That was one of four sharp chances Durham put down as well as fumbling a run-out opportunity, although the day’s worst miss was by the Bears’ Darren Maddy at first slip off Neil Carter with Di Venuto on eight. A misfield by Ian Blackwell gave Clarke the two runs which took him to 50 and prompted extra jubilation from his team-mates as it also brought up the 200, earning the batting point.Clarke finally sliced a drive to point to leave Chris Rushworth with career-best figures of 3 for 46 as he and Thorp shared the last seven wickets. Both swung the ball in the morning but remained wicketless as Steve Harmison’s hostility accounted for the openers, although Maddy clearly did not agree with his caught-behind decision. With Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell helping England Lions to victory against West Indies A, and Varun Chopra injured, Warwickshire had 18-year-old Ateeq Javid at No. 5. He slapped a long-hop from Thorp to point before Tim Ambrose and Troughton put on 48 for the fifth wicket.Troughton led a charmed life before he departed for 44 when Rushworth had him caught behind, while the recalled Ambrose scored most of his 31 runs behind square on the off side before Rushworth brought one back to pin him lbw.Thorp took the next three as Carter drove to mid-on, Miller lobbed a catch to second slip and Imran Tahir twice edged fours to third man before Claydon was posted there and promptly held a high slice. The pitch appeared to be easing in the evening sunshine and after their early escapes the Durham openers prospered, mixing crisp strokes with alert running. Stoneman finished unbeaten on 42 with Di Venuto on 31.

Rangers could replace Morelos with Castenda

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has endured a busy start to his first transfer window in charge of Rangers, with two deals already having been completed.

The Gers have brought in James Sands on an 18-month loan from MLS side New York City FC, but they have also raked in a club-record fee for Nathan Patterson, with the defender joining Premier League club Everton earlier this month.

It remains to be seen what will happen between now and the end of January, with continuing speculation over players leaving and joining the club.

Bye-bye Morelos

One player who could be on his way out of Ibrox to follow Patterson to England is centre-forward Alfredo Morelos. Leicester, Everton and Newcastle have all been touted with an interest in the striker and could make a move for him this month if reports are to be believed, with a £20m price tag placed on his head.

If the Gers do end up waving goodbye to the Colombian striker, they could find an ideal replacement in his fellow countryman Frank Castaneda. Rangers have been linked with a swoop for the forward, who is a free agent as it stands, and he could come in to fill the vacant berth at the top of the pitch which would be left by Morelos’ exit.

Castaneda has an impressive scoring record throughout his career that suggests he could be an excellent signing for the club. He managed 42 goals in 73 games for Sheriff Tiraspol during his time there, averaging a goal every 1.7 games for the club. This included an incredible 33 goals and 18 assists in the 2020/21 campaign, showing that he can score and create goals at an exceptional rate.

Meanwhile, Morelos has scored 107 goals in 211 matches for Rangers, averaging a goal every 1.97 matches. This suggests that Castaneda could come in and provide goals on a similar level to his fellow countryman if he is able to translate his form over to Scotland, although it is difficult to gauge the difference in quality between the Premiership and the Moldovan top-flight, in which the 27-year-old most recently plied his trade.

Castaneda produced two goals and three assists in seven Champions League qualifiers for Sheriff and played in their historic 2-1 win away to Real Madrid in the group stage, showing that he can perform at the level in which Rangers aspire to compete next season.

Therefore, he could come in as an ideal candidate to replace Morelos should the latter end up leaving to join Patterson in the Premier League this month.

Bermuda drop Outerbridge and Tucker

David Moore, the Bermuda coach, has dropped vice-captain Stephen Outerbridge and fast bowler Kevin Tucker from the squad for the limited-over matches against the UAE

Cricinfo staff10-Jul-2010David Moore, the Bermuda coach, has dropped vice-captain Stephen Outerbridge and fast bowler Kevin Tucker from the squad for the limited-over matches against the UAE. The decision was taken after the pair arrived late for a recovery session at Horseshoe Bay following a nine-wicket defeat – Bermuda’s third in the four-team tournament – inside three days in an ICC Intercontinental Shield match against the UAE.”Stephen and Kevin have been dropped because they arrived late for the recovery session,” Moore told CMC. “It’s disappointing, but what can I do? They could not fulfil team standards. They may be available for the games on Monday.”Moore’s decision to drop Outerbridge and Tucker was consistent with his toughstance towards discipline since he took over coaching duties from Gus Logie. Outerbridge and Tucker joined Jordan DeSilva, who has since returned, and Malachi Jones on a list of players dropped for not maintaining team standards.Bermuda play UAE in two one-dayers over the weekend and then in two Twenty20 games on Monday. “It’s a big series for us because it’s giving us an idea of how other guys in the squad are actually going to handle international cricket,” Moore said. “And the issue is that we need them to handle international cricket well, and the only way we can gauge that is by watching the way they handle international pressure.”Squad: David Hemp (capt), Chris Foggo, Fiqre Crockwell, Shannon Rayner, Terryn Fray, Rodney Trott, Joshua Gilbert, Tamauri Tucker, Stefan Kelly, JordanDeSilva, Jim West, Christian Burgess, Janeiro Tucker, Justin Pitcher, OliverPitcher, Stephan Dill.

Gerrard drops Leon Bailey injury update

After managing to snatch a point from being 2-0 down against Manchester United in their latest Premier League match that ended in a 2-2 draw thanks to second-half goals from Jacob Ramsey and Philippe Coutinho, Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa side are currently sat in 13th place in the league table with 23 points from 20 games.

Looking ahead to the second half of the season, it seems as though Gerrard may not have to wait much longer to have one of his squad options back to full fitness, which will surely please a lot of fans at Villa Park.

What’s the news?

In a recent report from Birmingham Live, Villa winger Leon Bailey is set to make a return to action next month after being out of action with a thigh injury he picked up during Villa’s 2-1 defeat against Manchester City back in early December.

On the subject of Bailey, the report quotes Gerrard as saying that the Jamaican international is “progressing well with his rehab,” which should be a big positive for everyone at the Midlands club.

Villa signed the 24-year-old back in the previous summer transfer window from German club Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth a reported fee of £25m.

Since then, the winger has made nine appearances for Villa in the Premier League, scoring one goal and providing two assists in the process, with the first assist coming on his Villa debut during their 3-2 defeat against Watford at the start of the season, showing what a useful attacking option he can be for the team when he’s fit.

Moving forward, if Bailey can get back to full fitness as soon as possible and stay fit for the remainder of his debut campaign at Villa, he could certainly have a big say in whether the team finishes in the top half of the table or not if he manages to add some more goals and assists to his record.

This would surely not only delight a lot of Villa fans but prove to the likes of Johan Lange, Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris why they were to right to launch a move for Bailey in the first place.

Everton interested in Wayne Rooney

Farhad Moshiri is interested in a move to appoint Wayne Rooney as the next Everton manager.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Kaveh Solhekol, with the Sky Sports journalist revealing on The Transfer Show that the Derby County boss is one of the leading candidates for the vacant managerial position at Goodison Park following the sacking of Rafael Benitez on Sunday.

Regarding Moshiri’s shortlist of targets for the role, Solhekol said: “Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney are leading candidates for the job.”

Fans would love him

While it is true that Rooney’s CV in management is extremely limited, considering the history between the 36-year-old and the Toffees, in addition to the fact that the former England captain has done a rather extraordinary job at Pride Park, it is easy to see why the appointment of the Evertonian would be one that the Goodison Park faithful would love.

Indeed, after taking over the Derby job last season, Rooney managed to seal the club’s survival from relegation to League One in the most dramatic fashion, with a 3-3 draw on the final day of the season in a relegation shootout against Sheffield Wednesday being enough to keep the Rams up and send the Owls down.

Furthermore, the 36-year-old has done an even more astonishing job at Pride Park so far this season, as, despite the fact that the club have been docked 21 points for breaking financial regulations and being entered into administration, are operating with a skeleton squad and are under a transfer embargo, the manager has guided his side to eight wins, 11 draws and just seven losses from their 26 Championship fixtures.

These results would leave the club sitting in an extremely healthy 11th place – just seven points off of the play-offs – if it were not for their points deductions, something which Rooney simply must be given huge credit for.

As such, it is clear for all to see that the Everton academy product has an extremely bright future in management, and, considering his affiliation with the club, his appointment at Goodison Park would undoubtedly be a very popular one with fans.

Kartik spins through Kent

ScorecardMurali Kartik took 5 for 50 as Kent subsided•Getty ImagesMurali Kartik produced an exemplary display of left-arm spin bowling to lead a determined Somerset fightback on the second day at Taunton. Starting the day on 122 for 7, the hosts added 83 to gain an unlikely batting point, with Zander de Bruyn making 44 in a total of 205 all out. Darren Stevens finished with 4 for 38 and Amjad Khan 3 for 63.Kent looked to be progressing nicely at 76 for 1 in reply. But then Kartik got to work from the River End, sending down 14 overs unchanged for figures of 5 for 50. Alfonso Thomas returned 3 for 21 as the visitors were dismissed for 172. By the close Somerset had moved to 128 for 2 in their second innings, with Marcus Trescothick unbeaten on 59, to lead by 161.They looked strongly placed with Kartik in such good form. The 33-year-old has now taken 26 wickets for the county in four Championship games at an average of just under 13. Subtle variations in flight and pace undid Geraint Jones, who was caught and bowled for 16, to make it 76 for 2. He had hit the previous ball from Kartik for a straight six, but the wily spinner still tossed the next one up and got his man.Joe Denly (34), Alex Blake, Matthew Coles and James Tredwell were also undone by Kartik’s guile and after Kent had gone in to tea at 164 for 8, Thomas finished off the innings by forcing edges from Malinga Bandara and Khan. There were still 31 overs left in the day when Somerset began their second innings with Marcus Trescothick and Arul Suppiah looking to add to the 33-run advantage. They more than doubled it, taking the score to 45 before Suppiah was caught behind for 24 pushing forward defensively at Coles.Jos Buttler hit Tredwell for a straight six and Trescothick collected two maximums by pulling Coles over backward square as they built rapidly on the steady start. Trescothick became the first player in the match to register a half-century with the total on 115 for 1. It came off 70 balls, with 4 fours as well as the 2 sixes.Buttler played and missed several times in his 42 before being adjudged lbw pushing forward to Bandara’s topspinner. But it was still a creditable knock from the England Under-19 player, who helped Trescothick add 79.
