Romano says Man Utd want ‘insane’ player

Manchester United are interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Sommer at Monchengladbach

Sommer, labelled as ‘superb’ by journalist Josh Bunting, has been with Monchengladbach since 2014 but is set to be out of contract next summer.

The 33-year-old has made a whopping 326 appearances for the Bundesliga side, keeping 86 clean sheets. He’s begun the current campaign as first choice and has captained the club in the opening two Bundesliga fixtures, but it looks as if a move to Old Trafford could be on the cards.

The Latest: United keen

According to Romano, United are ‘interested’ in signing Sommer before the deadline.

The transfer expert states that there is interest from other Premier League clubs, while Monchengladbach have offered the Switzerland international a new deal.

The Verdict: Busy few weeks

David de Gea had an afternoon to forget last time out against Brentford, so it seems as if Erik ten Hag wants some serious competition for the Spaniard.

Sommer, who is in ‘excellent shape’ according to Adi Hutter, could be a smart signing due to his experience at the highest level for both club and country, with Hutter also claiming he’s ‘one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga’.

However, United also appear to need multiple outfield additions before September 1, so a new goalkeeper may not be top of the agenda at this moment in time in what should be a frantic few weeks.

Newcastle eyeing Celtic’s Matt O’Riley

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle United’s interest in Matt O’Riley in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

According to ESPN, the Magpies are among a number of Premier League clubs eyeing up a swoop to sign the central midfielder.

The report claims that Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Leicester are among the other English clubs keen on him, whilst Lille, Borussia Dortmund, and Wolfsburg are also in the mix.

It is stated that an offer of up to £20m could be enough to tempt Celtic into cashing in on him, although they are not looking to sell him at this moment in time.

Big Joe Willock upgrade

Newcastle snapped up Joe Willock on a permanent deal from Arsenal in the summer of 2021 after a fruitful loan spell, but he endured a difficult first full season on Tyneside.

He averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.71 in the top flight, placing him 17th in the Magpies’ squad, which shows that he was nowhere near being one of the club’s top performers despite arriving for a fee of £25m.

He scored two goals and failed to register an assist or create a single ‘big chance’, whilst averaging 0.6 key passes per game, as he struggled to make a significant impact at the top end of the pitch.

Meanwhile, O’Riley enjoyed an excellent campaign with Celtic in Scotland and has the potential to be a big upgrade on Willock as an attack-minded midfielder.

Pundit Michael Stewart previously described him as “silky” and “classy”, and talent scout Jacek Kulig once dubbed him a “magician”. After an impressive performance against Rangers in February, Kulig said that the 21-year-old was the “Old Firm Derby silent hero. The amount of work he has done tonight is immense. He was literally everywhere”.

In the Premiership last season, the Danish gem chipped in with four goals and three assists in 16 appearances. He created six ‘big chances’ and made 2.2 key passes per game – more than any Newcastle player managed in the Premier League – and averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.40.

O’Riley has started the current campaign in a similar vein, with two ‘big chances’ created and 12 key passes in four league outings, highlighting his creativity and ability to regularly tee up his team-mates for shots.

Therefore, if he can make the step up to Premier League, he could be a big upgrade on Willock at Newcastle by offering far more quality on the ball.

The statistics suggest that he could do more damage than the Englishman at the top end of the pitch whilst performing to a higher standard on a weekly basis; and at the age of 21, he still has plenty of scope to further develop and improve his skills.

Everton still after Idrissa Gana Gueye

Everton are still working on returning a cult hero to Goodison Park…

What’s the word?

According to journalist Paul Brown, Idrissa Gana Gueye is still close to signing for the Toffees.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he claimed: “Everton are ready to pull the trigger on that. They have a deal agreed with the player. The problem is whether he can negotiate the sort of exit he wants from PSG.

“That’s been a problem so far and I don’t think anyone knows whether PSG will ultimately agree to let him go under the terms that he’d like to. I think it’s a waiting game there essentially.”

He has just one year left on his £97k-per-week contract and has seemingly been ruled out of Christophe Galtier’s plans for the coming season.

He’s the final piece of the puzzle

With Amadou Onana already secured at Goodison Park, it seems that Frank Lampard is not content with just one tough-tackling and relentless midfielder.

He, therefore, is seeking a romantic return for Gueye, who captured the attention at Goodison Park for his incredible work rate, a characteristic beloved by Evertonians.

Perhaps once the 44-year-old gets the Senegal international in, he can act as the final piece of the puzzle for solving his midfield dilemma, as he looks to integrate Onana in without overworking the 21-year-old.

He now returns to the club with a wealth of added experience from his first stint at the club, having played 30 Champions League games alongside some of the best players in the world at Paris Saint-Germain.

However, the core attributes that made him such a success have not waned. He still ranks in the top 5% for pressures and the top 8% for tackles per 90 among midfield players in Europe’s top five league. He is a midfield “powerhouse” in the words of football writer Tom Williams, and that’s exactly what the Toffees have often lacked in recent years.

His arrival could tie the whole club together, as winning the midfield battles is often the difference between deciding a game’s result.

With Lampard insistent on playing two central midfielders, to bed Onana in by prioritising an Alex Iwobi and Gueye midfield would make perfect sense for the coming season.

That way, the Belgium international can one day take over from the 32-year-old, and if he can inherit his traits, Everton will be blessed with a midfield that can dominate against whomever they should play.

Gueye is both an instant upgrade and an investment all in one and would finish Lampard’s summer spending with the crowning jewel of a homecoming.

Aston Villa man could seal exit in January

Douglas Luiz will leave Aston Villa for free next summer as things stand and has ‘decided’ he will not extend his stay, according to reports in his homeland.

The Lowdown: Luiz almost leaves Villa

Steven Gerrard had a busy end to the summer transfer window, not only signing Leander Dendoncker and Jan Bednarek but also desperately trying to keep hold of Luiz.

The Brazilian was linked with a host of clubs late on, with Arsenal showing the most interest, but he ended up remaining at Villa Park for the time being.

Luiz is in the final year of his current deal, however, meaning he can leave for free next summer.

The Latest: Summer exit nailed on

According to Brazilian outlet UOL [via Sport Witness], the 24-year-old has ‘decided’ that he will definitely exit Villa at the end of the season, as he looks for a fresh challenge elsewhere.

It is also stated that Luiz would like to negotiate with clubs in the January transfer window, when he will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement before moving later in the year.

His ‘idea’ is to remain in the Premier League, but AC Milan are mentioned are potential suitors having approached him ‘many times’.

The Verdict: Go out with a bang

In truth, it is hard to begrudge Luiz a move away next summer, especially after staying put this time around, admittedly potentially against his wishes.

It allows Gerrard to get one more good season out of one of his best midfielders, with journalist Gregg Evans describing him as ‘fantastic’ and a ‘joy to watch’, affording the boss time to find adequate replacements.

If Luiz can remain focused and help steer Villa away from the relegation battle and perhaps even towards the European places, producing influential performances along the way, his legacy will be far more positive than it could have been with a dramatic deadline day exit.

Manchester United: Ten Hag requests Youri Tielemans move

Erik ten Hag has asked Manchester United officials to sign Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans in January.

The Lowdown: Scored on Saturday

Labelled ‘outstanding’ by his manager Brendan Rodgers, the 25-year-old made his seventh successive Premier League appearance of the season on Saturday.

The attacking midfielder netted his first goal of the campaign from the penalty spot against Tottenham, although the Belgian couldn’t prevent a sixth league defeat in a row for the Foxes, who were eventually thumped 6-2.

Tielemans was linked with a move to Old Trafford over the summer, and speculation has already returned ahead of the January transfer window.

The Latest: Ten Hag wants Tielemans

According to one Spanish outlet, Ten Hag has personally ‘requested’ Tielemans’ services in January.

The report claims that the United manager also wants a right-back and a new forward in the winter transfer window.

The Verdict: Cut-price move?

The 25-year-old will be into the final six months of his Leicester contract in 2023 should his situation remain the same, so you’d expect that a cut-price deal could be on the cards for the £40.5m-rated Belgian.

Tielemans can play as a defensive, central or attacking midfielder and has also been described as ‘one of Europe’s top midfielders’ by Rodgers, so he could be the next important piece in Ten Hag’s Old Trafford jigsaw if United can persuade him to join.

Leeds: Orta interested in Pirie

Leeds United are interested in a deal to bring Lewis Pirie to Elland Road.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a recent report by the Daily Record, who claim that all of Leeds, Brighton & Hove Albion and Fulham are keeping a close eye on the Aberdeen forward ahead of launching a potential move for the 15-year-old further down the line.

The report goes on to state both the Whites and the Cottagers watched the striker in action for Scotland U16s’ 4-2 victory over Denmark – a fixture in which the teenager scored twice – earlier this month, while the Seagulls are also believed to have taken a look at the attacker in action for Aberdeen last week.

Finally, it is claimed that Championship side Sheffield United are also interested in the Scottish sensation, while the Dons are thought to be extremely eager to tie the youngster down to professional terms on his 16th birthday in January next year.

Orta’s next Perkins

While it is true that Pirie is still an incredibly young talent, considering how much interest there appears to be in the 15-year-old’s signing, should Orta manage to get a deal over the line for the player who DD Advanced Coaching dubbed “unreal” ahead of the likes of Brighton, Fulham and Sheffield United, the Spaniard could well have unearthed his next Sonny Perkins.

Indeed, having arrived on a free transfer this summer, the former West Ham United centre-forward has been in sensational form for the Whites’ U21 side, having already bagged six goals in just five Premier League 2 appearances for Michael Skubala’s youth team – returns that saw the 18-year-old win the division’s Player of the Month award in August.

And, in order to seal the England U19 international’s signature back in July, the Whites’ director of football had to fight off the interest of a number of Leeds’ Premier League rivals, including clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.

As such, while Pirie looks to have a little way to go before he is achieving the returns of a player who has already made his Premier League and Europa League debuts, considering the sheer amount of excitement surrounding the 15-year-old’s potential, the Aberdeen starlet could well prove to become Orta’s next Perkins-esque discovery in youth football – a prospect that is sure to delight everyone involved with the Elland Road club.

Wolves: Madeley surprised by Ruben Neves playing centre-back

The Athletic’s Wolves correspondent Steve Madeley offered his reaction on Twitter after spotting Ruben Neves operating in the middle of a back three against West Ham on Saturday evening.

The lowdown

The Old Gold fell to a 2-0 defeat against their hosts at the London Stadium, with goals from Gianluca Scamacca and Jarrod Bowen inflicting the damage.

Lage faced issues in the centre-back department coming into the match, with Nathan Collins suspended following his red card against Manchester City two weeks ago. That left Max Kilman and the inexperienced duo of Yerson Mosquera and Toti Gomes as the only available natural options.

In the end, the manager overlooked both Mosquera and Toti and instead fielded a natural full-back in Jonny Otto alongside Kilman, with Nelson Semedo and Rayan Ait-Nouri stationed on the flanks.

The latest

One Lage innovation caught Madeley’s eye within ‘seconds’ of the kick-off at the London Stadium, and it concerned the third individual used in that makeshift central defensive unit.

The Athletic reporter tweeted: “Looks in the early seconds like Neves is playing in the middle of a back 3. That is…. interesting.”

He explained in a subsequent tweet that Wolves seemed to be moving from a back three to a back four fluidly, with Semedo dropping back.

The verdict

Lage surely felt a degree of pressure coming into the game after picking up just three points from the first 21 available this season, and this was certainly a bold move as he tried to inspire an improvement.

According to Transfermarkt, Neves had no experience of starting a game as a centre-back prior to this evening.

It was an experiment which delivered mixed results, with the Portuguese midfielder picking up a SofaScore rating of 6.7/10, by far his lowest in a Wolves shirt so far this season.

He completed 72 of the 83 passes that he attempted (an accuracy of 87%) but he also earned a booking which will see him suspended for his team’s next match against Chelsea, given that it was already his fifth in the league this term.

Rangers played blinder with Boumsong

Glasgow Rangers played a blinder on former defender Jean-Alain Boumsong, with Alex McLeish making an unbelievable profit on the player after just six months at Ibrox.

The 2003/04 campaign was a disaster for the Light Blues. McLeish had led the club to a wonderful treble the year before and there were high hopes that they could dominate Scotland, especially with the talent at their disposal.

Financial problems meant the summer was full of outgoings, most notably Barry Ferguson while resorting to free transfers in order to add some reinforcements to the playing squad and it soon transpired the vast majority were not up to the required standard.

In December of that same year, the club agreed on a pre-contract deal with French defender Boumsong and he was to join on a five-year contract in the summer of 2004.

Boumsong shone for the club, making Scotland his playground as Rangers emerged from their poor campaign before and challenged Celtic for domestic honours. McLeish hailed him for not needing “much time to settle in” before suggesting in December of 2004 that “we don’t want him to go.”

Yet, after just 26 appearances for the Ibrox side, Newcastle came calling within days of the manager’s statement with an £8m offer being swiftly accepted and the player was off to the Premier League.

Following his excellent performances north of the border, it looked like the club had lost a player who could have been a feature in the Gers backline for years to come.

His move to England soon turned into a nightmare, however, playing just 59 times for the club before moving to Juventus.

The 27-cap Frenchman even featured in a list of the worst Premier League players of all time, ranking in 17th place.

Making an £8m profit on a player who had joined just six months previously was an excellent piece of business by McLeish, although he might have had a better career had he stayed in Glasgow, even just for another few years.

There is no doubt his career stagnated once he left Rangers, and with his potential, he might have made more than 27 appearances for France.

Boumsong still ranks in the top ten of highest transfer fees received by the club (5th) and it was a rare McLeish masterclass.

Di Francesco leading race for Wolves job

Wolverhampton Wanderers have identified Eusebio Di Francesco as the leading candidate for the current managerial vacancy, according to journalist Graeme Bailey.

The Lowdown: Lage’s departure

Bruno Lage was sacked by Fosun and Jeff Shi following the club’s 2-0 Premier League defeat to West Ham last weekend, which saw them enter the relegation zone after an underwhelming start to the season.

The Old Gold have already been linked with several new coaches, including Ruben Amorim and Pedro Martins, but a new name has entered the fold and is being seriously taken into consideration at Molineux.

The Latest: Wolves hold talks with Di Francesco

Taking to Twitter, Bailey revealed that Di Francesco is now in contention to take over at Wolves.

“Eusebio Di Francesco emerges as Wolves option to replace sacked Bruno Lage.”

Expanding in his column for 90min, the reporter claimed that the 53-year-old has ‘emerged as the leading candidate’, with ‘talks’ having already ‘taken place’.

It’s believed that the Italian is ‘hugely keen’ to take on a new role in England.

The Verdict: Perfect candidate?

Di Francesco would be a huge name to be able to attract to the Midlands, and he would be a fantastic addition should Wolves be able to land his services.

The Pescara-born man has an impressive track record, having guided Sassuolo into Europe before taking AS Roma all the way to the Champions League semi-finals.

The former Giallorossi boss is also a free agent so the Old Gold wouldn’t be required to pay any compensation, making him an even more attractive candidate for the role.

One concern may be his recent short spells at Sampdoria, Cagliari and Hellas Verona, actually only winning one game with the latter, but his achievements in Rome and Sassuolo certainly look enticing.

Liverpool: Milner dominated Man City

Today’s game between Liverpool and Manchester City was only meant to have one result; a victory for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Along with Arsenal, they are the in-form team in the Premier League and are now widely expected to win the title next year. However, Jurgen Klopp’s men are still very much in the conversation, with the Reds securing a surprising 1-0 win.

Considering their form of the last few years, it shouldn’t be a shock result, but this is a Liverpool side who have been rather poor all season long.

Indeed, before their clash with City today, the Merseysiders hadn’t won in three Premier League fixtures and were sat on just ten points.

They are now three points better off but crucially, the mood and atmosphere inside Anfield has changed. This will be an enormous confidence-boosting win and they did it without some key characters too, with Joel Matip and Luis Diaz injured, while Trent Alexander-Arnold was only fit enough for the bench.

Alexander-Arnold’s deputy happened to be 36-year-old veteran James Milner, a man of sublime versatility.

The former City man has played in a number of positions for Klopp, notably in central midfield and even at left-back. However, trusted at right-back today, it was – in the words of podcasters EPL Index – “his best performance in years.”

That feels like a strong statement but given the position he was playing in, Liverpool’s form and their opposition, it was a display that really saw Milner roll back the years.

He was outstanding in defence, demonstrating his composure and strength despite playing against some of the best attacking players on the planet.

During the course of the game, the former England international won 100% of his aerial duels (3/3) and was successful in a high percentage of his ground duels too (2/3).

His pass accuracy of 60% from his 53 touches may not look too glamorous but this was a gritty performance, rather than one that required grace and poise from the defender, hence his inability to complete an accurate cross, an area where Alexander-Arnold thrives in.

The youngster has been singled out for his questionable defensive attributes this term but there was no such concern with Milner at the back.

His performance in defence was exceptional, as he won two tackles and also completed four clearances, with Liverpool keeping a rare clean sheet in their biggest game of the campaign to date.

Indeed, Micah Richards summed it up brilliantly on Sky Sports’ coverage of the game, saying post-match: “Milner was excellent, his positioning, knowing where to be, knowing when to press, he was a leader. I don’t know when his last 90 minutes was, against City as well.”

When supporters saw the veteran’s name on the team sheet this afternoon, many will have been fearful for what should have been a long afternoon for the 5 foot 9 full-back. Instead, he rose to the occasion and typified what was a lionhearted victory.

Mo Salah’s winning goal was incredibly special, but without Milner, perhaps life wouldn’t have been as easy against Erling Haaland and co.
