Chris Woakes out of Scotland ODI, waits on Australia series

Tightness in right quad forces allrounder out; Tom Curran brought into England squad as replacement

George Dobell04-Jun-2018England allrounder Chris Woakes has been ruled out of the Scotland ODI with tightness in his right quad. Surrey’s Tom Curran comes into the squad in his place.Woakes, who left the field towards the end of Pakistan’s second innings at Headingley, will be assessed during the week to judge whether he will be fit for the start of the series against Australia on the June 13.Woakes was recalled to the Test side in Leeds having been left out of the opening Test at Lord’s when England preferred Mark Wood. He claimed 3 for 55 in the first innings and then removed Sarfraz Ahmed in the second before reporting discomfort.Tom Curran, whose brother Sam made his Test debut at Headingley, was already part of the squad for the Australia series. Woakes is the second player to be withdrawn from the Scotland match after Ben Stokes picked up a hamstring strain. Stokes will also be reassessed later in the week in order to ascertain when he may be fit to return. The England management have already confirmed he will miss the first part of the Australia series.Royal London Cup qualification

The two group winners will immediately qualify for a home draw in semi-finals. The team finishing second in each group will receive a home draw in the play-offs and play against the team finishing third in the opposite group. The play-off winners will play away in the semi-finals. Semi-final ties will be determined by a free draw.

Meanwhile, Joe Root will be among the England players returning to county action later this week as attention turns to the shorterformats of the game. Root, England’s Test captain, is available for Yorkshire’s home game against Northamptonshire on Thursday; a match that could yet decide which teams qualify for the knock-out stages.Other players from England’s Test squad available for Royal London Cup fixtures this week are Dom Bess (Somerset), Mark Wood (Durham), Keaton Jennings (Lancashire), Dawid Malan (Middlesex) and Sam Curran (Surrey). Malan has also been made available to play for Middlesex in their County Championship match against Leicestershire starting on June 20.Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler have been rested ahead of the ODIs, while England are yet to make a decision on the county availability of James Anderson and Stuart Broad ahead of the start of the Test series against India in August. They have, however, confirmed that neither will be available for the next round of County Championship matches which starts on Saturday. But Alastair Cook is available for Essex’s Championship game against Lancashire and Moeen Ali will play for Worcestershire’s final Royal London game before joining up with England’s limited-overs squad.

Move over Rutter: Farke could hand "clinical" 6 ft 1 Leeds dud his last chance

Leeds United seem to have finally stabilised after a rocky start to the new Championship season, with Daniel Farke now settled on what his best XI roughly looks like.

With much of the debate having surrounded the positioning of Joel Piroe and Georginio Rutter, it is the latter who is certainly beginning to prove his astronomical worth.

How is Georginio Rutter playing?

As a truly foolish Jesse Marsch purchase, brought in for a club-record fee, the Frenchman was instantly handed the burden of securing Premier League safety, despite being far from the requisite level.

Having now had ample time to acclimatise to English football, Elland Road is playing host to a true masterclass, with the Frenchman seemingly putting on a show every week.

His five goal contributions in ten league games mark a fine return, and are further upheld through his 2.6 key passes per game and 2.2 successful dribbles per game, via Sofascore. He is gliding past the opposition with ease, but seems to have unlocked the true creativity within to allow him to forge opportunities for his teammates.

As such, his boss is always keen to praise him: "I think we can be absolutely happy with him, his work ethic. He is great in linking the play. He is still a relatively young lad, it's important that we were concentrated on scoring the first goal. He had great assists, it was a top-class performance. He deserves all the praise."

With that in mind, it still draws question marks over his credentials as a lone striker, with his skillset clearly much more preferable for an attacking midfielder.

Although Farke spoke in length on his reasons behind the strange combinations he and Piroe undergo, perhaps following the international break he could seek to return Rutter to his natural role, and instead hand Patrick Bamford one final chance to impress before shutting the door on a fine Leeds career that reached lofty heights, but recently has fell to impossible lows.

How good is Patrick Bamford?

Whilst the Englishman's failures in front of goal from last season are likely still fresh in the memory, having first missed a late sitter against Leicester City before seeing his penalty saved by Nick Pope, there remains a top forward just waiting to be unleashed once again.

Leeds forward Georginio Rutter.

After all, the 30-year-old was once instrumental in their 2020 promotion push, before taking his game to new levels upon their Premier League return before injury struck.

It should come as no surprise that the two relegation battles came as the 6 foot 1 dud would only make seven and 18 starts in those respective campaigns.

During that remarkable Championship term, Bamford would score 16 and assist four before somehow improving that in the top flight, firing in a further 17 and assisting eight more.

He has showcased his class in the past, and with Piroe now there to ease the goalscoring burden, perhaps his return to fitness could prove incredibly profitable as they seek to earn another promotion.

Leeds striker Patrick Bamford.

After all, only three years ago saw journalist Phil Hay laud the marksman "clean and clinical", which is a claim many would refute nowadays.

Whilst either of the striker or number ten currently featuring could move aside for Bamford, allowing him to take one last opportunity, perhaps the versatile Rutter could be preferred, and pushed either out wide or deeper into midfield to facilitate one last dance for the former Chelsea man.

Early bragging rights up for grabs for England or India in T20 decider

It’s all to play for in the final T20I in Bristol as England and India seek the first spoils on offer in a long contest

The Preview by Andrew McGlashan07-Jul-2018Big PictureIf there wasn’t enough crunch sporting action involving England this weekend, now there is more. This T20 series has a decider after Alex Hales levelled things up at 1-1 by keeping calm in Cardiff as the chase became a little dicey. Both teams are well set up for chasing, so that is likely to be the favoured route in Bristol. England learnt from most of their mistakes at Old Trafford to ensure India’s spinners had much less of an impact in Cardiff. It also helped they knew their target – which wasn’t overly demanding – and didn’t have to use all-out aggression against the spinners.India did well to push the match into the final over – and with England needing 20 off two overs, then 12 off the last would have still fancied their chances – but their poor start with the bat ultimately cost them after losing three wickets in the Powerplay. It wasn’t until the final over of the innings from Jake Ball, which cost 22, that they really got away from England. It is still very early in this long tour and whoever wins this series will probably not be what is remembered come early September, but there are early bragging rights on offer with the victors also getting reassurance that they are heading along the right path towards the next global event in 2020.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)
England WLWLL
India LWWWWIn the spotlightBen Stokes is available again after the hamstring injury which has ruled him out of England action since the first Test against Pakistan in May. It creates a selection dilemma. How does he fit back in the side? It is unlikely he would be selected as one of five bowlers, so that leaves one of the batsmen vulnerable. Hales keeps making runs, Jonny Bairstow looks in terrific nick even down the order as does Jason Roy at the top while Eoin Morgan is captain. On form, Joe Root could be the one to miss out but before the series Paul Farbrace said he was a certainty for the T20 side. Something has to give, or is it a case that Stokes doesn’t come straight back?Shikhar Dhawan has missed out twice in the series – bowled by David Willey at Old Trafford and then run out in slightly comical fashion in Cardiff when he dropped his bat then couldn’t get his foot grounded across the crease in time. Even before his dismissal he had struggled for momentum, striking at less than a run-a-ball against some tight England pace bowling. He’ll be keen to find his groove before the ODIs. He also needs 28 runs for 1000 in T20IsTeam newsThere’s the Stokes question for England (see above) and if he was to return as one of six bowlers it could open the way for a second spinner again, after Moeen Ali was left out in Cardiff. However, that would appear unlikely given the effectiveness of England’s quicks for the majority of the innings on Friday evening.England (probable) 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jos Buttler (wk), 3 Alex Hales, 4 Joe Root/Ben Stokes, 5 Eoin Morgan (capt), 6 Jonny Bairstow, 7 David Willey, 8 Liam Plunkett, 9 Chris Jordan, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Jake BallIndia could consider increasing their spin options by including the uncapped Krunal Pandya, who bowls left-arm spin, at the expense of Suresh Raina.India (probable) 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 KL Rahul, 4, Virat Kohli (capt), 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (wk), 7 Hardik Pandya, 8 Yuzvendra Chahal, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Umesh YadavPitch and conditionsThere was more grass on the surface in Cardiff than had been the case at Old Trafford and England will be keen for similar in Bristol if the weather allows. There are short, straight boundaries which can make it a challenge for spinners. It is set to be a hot, sunny afternoon.Stats and trivia There have been just two previous T20Is at this ground, the most recent of which was back in 2011 David Willey’s 1 for 18 in Cardiff was his most economical four-over spell in T20Is Rohit Sharma need 14 runs for 2000 in T20Is. He would be the second India player to reach the milestone after Virat Kohli and fifth overall.Quotes”He’s played a lot for us – he’s one of our highest run-scorers, a very experienced campaigner. An innings like that tonight makes him a pretty strong case for the next game.”
“Kuldeep [Yadav] bowled really well in the last game – but in this one, they played him more carefully. They chose which delivery they wanted to play or not play.”

Al-Nassr fell to a disappointing home defeat to lowly Al-Raed as goals from Karim El Berkaoui, Mohamed Fouzair, and Amir Sayoud cancelled out Ayman Yahya's strike on Thursday night. While Ronaldo himself was somewhat off colour with some big spurned chances, the 39-year-old called on his teammates to learn from this setback and come back stronger.

The result means Ronaldo's Al-Nassr are a whopping 12 points behind league leaders Al-Hilal with 11 games remaining. The Riyadh-based club are unbeaten in the league this season and if Al-Nassr are to topple them, they cannot afford to drop any more points. They also have to hope Jorge Jesus's side have a collapse in form.

Rangers and Clement table new deal for "brilliant" player; expected to sign

A new era awaits at Rangers, with Philippe Clement stepping into the technical area following Michael Beale's dismissal. The former AS Monaco manager doesn't exactly have an easy task on his hands, given that the Gers have already lost three games in the Scottish Premiership this season, and currently sit seven points adrift of table-toppers Celtic.

Already so far behind their Old Firm rivals, Clement may face a pressure-free start to life at Ibrox. Those at the club will know that it will not be an easy fix, and getting things right off the pitch will be the best step towards long-term improvement. And that could see one particular player sign a new contract at the club to ease any exit fears.

Latest Rangers contract news

Clement's first game in charge comes against Hibernian in a tough first test for his side. The international break could have handed him the chance to settle into life at Ibrox though, and decide just who his standout stars will be. In an ideal world, his first game will end in routine fashion to increase the confidence of his players that catching Celtic may not be such a fantasy this season.

Meanwhile, off the pitch, the latest Borna Barisic contract news is certainly positive. According to TeamTalk, the Gers have offered the left-back a new two-year deal at the club, which he is expected to sign to end any fears over a potential exit. Barisic's current contract comes to an end next summer, of course, which would allow him to start seeking his next club from January.

Having solved their managerial problem, however, Rangers have seemingly moved to put an end to any worries about the Croatian's future. After reportedly attracting interest from the likes of Nottingham Forest, it seems as though Barisic is set to stay put at Ibrox.

How has Barisic performed this season?

Glasgow Rangers defender Borna Barisic.

Much like the rest of his Rangers teammates, Barisic hasn't been at his best this season. The left-back has at least been a standout on ocassions, however, with four assists to his name, a sign that things could yet improve. At 30-years-old, the left-back represents the type of player that Clement should look to lean on in the opening months of his tenure, with experience arguably the key to helping Rangers turn things around this season.

If the new manager can get the best out of Barisic, too, then he'll have himself the perfect option down the left-hand side. In top form, the Rangers man has earned praise from Neil McCann, who told BBC Sportsound after a 2-2 draw against Hibernian: "We said Rangers are liable to burst into life at any time – they did it there. You know in the final-third, generally, you get brilliant quality from Barisic. This time he puts in a fantastic ball, begging for someone to attack it.”

When considering his experience, and ability when at his best, it's no surprise that Rangers have offered Barisic a new deal. It's now up to the left-back to decide whether or not to put pen to paper.

Durham crash to lowest score to leave home quarter-final in doubt

Durham’s run of eight wins in nine ended in spectacular fashion as Lancashire homed in on a last eight place

Their previous lowest 20-over total was 93 against Kent at Canterbury in a 2009 quarter-final.Durham need to avoid defeat in their final group game at home to Derbyshire on Friday to be certain of a home tie in the quarter-finals. Lancashire, who finish at Edgbaston on Wednesday, are a point behind them. They also made a troubled start after being put in under heavy skies following rain at Chester-le-Street. But they recovered from 6 for 2 through Davies’s sixth half-century from 12 innings. His 64 from 62 balls contained only six fours, but his bustling style kept the score ticking over while holding things together before he fell to the last ball of the innings.Liam Trevaskis, who took three wickets when Lancashire needed only six runs off the final over against Durham at Old Trafford, was absent ill and Durham relied on seam until leg-spinner Ben Whitehad bowled two tidy overs late in the innings.Only two came off Chris Rushworth’s opening over then Karl Brown drove at Mark Wood’s second ball and lost his off stump. Four balls later a wild heave across the line resulted in Aaron Lilley edging behind and only 14 came from the first four overs.Davies and Dane Vilas cut loose with 27 off the next two, only for Vilas to drive well wide of off stump at Nathan Rimmington’s first ball and edge a second catch to Stuart Poynter. The same combination accounted for Jordan Clark after a 20-minute rain break and at the halfway stage Lancashire were 63 for four.Steven Croft contributed 30 to a stand of 47 before skying Rimmington to short fine leg and the Australian finished with four for 28 when Davies fell in identical fashion to Vilas.James Faulkner followed his unbeaten 18 by swinging one away to have Durham skipper Tom Latham caught behind third ball. Will Smith edged a drive two overs later and Graham Clark went the same way against Toby Lester.Paul Collingwood drove Lester straight to short extra cover, but rather than go for the jugular Lancashire rested Faulkner with figures of 2-1-3-2 and Durham briefly got into the game with 24 off two overs from Danny Lamb. But after the two wicketkeepers, Poynter and Ryan Davies, had put on 40 Matt Parkinson accepted a return catch off his first ball to remove Poynter. Although Davies swept him for six on his way to the top score of 27, the leg-spinner finished with three for 19 and 19-year-old Afghan Zahir Khan wrapped it up with two for eight.

Micah Richards’ net worth, girlfriend, haircut, retirement, age, salary, book

From bursting onto the scene at Manchester City to becoming one of the most entertaining pundits around, it's hard not to love the larger-than-life character that is Micah Richards.

Many today will know him better for his punditry and impressive ability to wind up Roy Keane without getting a walloping, but Richards was also a quality player in his day – and a Premier League-winning one at that.

With that in mind, Football FanCast has created a list of everything you need to know about the happiest man in football, from his wages to his haircuts; we've covered it all.

Micah Richards' age

Micah Richards was born on June 24th, 1988, in Birmingham, England and is 35 years old.

The Match of the Day pundit was born in the Midlands but spent most of his childhood in Chapeltown, Leeds.

Despite growing up in West Yorkshire and being born in Birmingham, Richards revealed that he supported Arsenal as a kid, largely due to the exploits of the talismanic Ian Wright.

Micah Richards' height

Micah Richards may be well known for his impressive physique, weighing a hefty 83 kg, but his height is fairly average, with the former City man measuring 1.8m, or 5 foot 10.

In comparison, Gary Lineker is 1.77m (5 foot 9), Alan Shearer is 1.83m (6 feet), and CBS Sports colleague Kate Abdo is 1.73m (5 foot 6).

Were Richards still playing today, he would be slightly shorter than the average player in the league, with that number being 1.82m, or 5 foot 11.

Micah Richards' career

Richards got his first taste of football in Leeds as he was a part of the Peacocks youth system between 1996 and 2000, after which he spent a year at Oldham Athletic before finally joining Manchester City's youth setup.

After spending several years impressing in the youth teams, Richards was finally handed his first team debut against Arsenal in October 2005, a day he described as "the most memorable day in my life." He would make 16 appearances across all competitions that season and became a recognisable member of the squad.

The next milestone came in the 2007/08 season when he was given the captain's armband in the wake of injuries to Richard Dunne, which made him the youngest captain in the club's long history.

The following six years were very up and down for Richards as he was a part of the teams that won the FA Cup in 2011 and the Premier League in 2012, but he was also blighted by consistent injuries.

With his place in the team up in the air in the 2013/14 season, the team let him go on a short-term loan to Fiorentina; however, upon his return, he was released by the club.

He would spend the next four seasons at Aston Villa, in both the Premier League and the Championship. Still, more injuries and a general lack of fitness meant he made very few appearances at the club, even going two seasons without a single one.

He announced his retirement in July 2019 at the age of 31.

Micah Richards' reason for retiring

In a vacuum, Richards' retirement looks like a massive surprise; after all, here was an FA Cup and Premier League winner retiring at age 31. You don't often see that.

However, it really shouldn't be seen as that much of a shock, as in the three years before he announced that he was hanging up his boots, he had played a grand total of three appearances.

Injuries and a general lack of fitness had stolen away his ability to play the game he loved. A few years after retiring, he told The Athletic: "I was struggling, demoralised, trying to put on a brave face in front of the boys at training."

If anything, it's surprising he didn't call it a day sooner, but it seems like it was the right decision for his own well-being as he now has a booming career as a well-loved pundit.

Micah Richards' salary

Richards has always been quite open about the money he earned from his playing days, revealing that he quickly rose up the wage structure at City from £1,000 a week when he started out, to reaching £50,000 a week before he was 20.

However, he has made a point that it wasn't just about the money for him, revealing that he turned down a £100,000-a-week offer at Manchester City in search of regular game time at Aston Villa.

However, on the Match of the Day podcast, he told Lineker and Shearer that it was the worst decision of his life, in an exchange that went viral for the hilarious honesty from the former City man.

While he was very open about his wages as a player, it is a little bit more difficult to find exact numbers for his salary as a pundit.

However, last year, the Mirror reported the wages of those working for the BBC and revealed that Richards was the 48th best-paid pundit at the organisation, bringing home around £200k a year.

That's not a bad wage for watching and talking about football. Still, we can assume his overall salary is much higher considering he also works for Sky Sports – who pay both Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville over £1m – and CBS Sports.

Micah Richards' net worth

It's always hard to find an accurate net worth for sports stars, as while we tend to know the ballpark figure they earn at their respective clubs, we can never know everything else that comes with it, such as sponsorships, investments or media fees.

That said, based on the money he earned as a player and the money he's purported to make as a pundit, the figure from Idolnetworth certainly feels plausible.

According to them, Richards has a net worth of $45m, which currently converts to around £37m.

While that might be less than other recently retired professionals, we reckon he's probably pretty pleased with that figure.

Micah Richards' partner

As far as we know, the charismatic pundit is currently single.

There were rumours of a relationship with Helen Flanagan all the way back in 2008, but neither she nor Richards have ever spoken publicly on the subject.

There were also rumours suggesting that Richards was dating former Arsenal player Alex Scott in 2020, but again, neither one of them ever spoke on these rumours, and it never seemed to be true.

Richards has kept his private life under wraps for much of his career, so it's unlikely we'll hear about any relationship news before he is happy to reveal it.

Micah Richards' haircut

So what does a retired footballer do with all of that money? Well, if you're Micah Richards, you spend a ridiculous amount of it on haircuts.

Yes, haircuts.

While covering the Champions League for CBS Sports earlier in February this year, the topic of haircuts arose, at which point the former City full-back remarked that he had three trims a week.

This would be odd behaviour at the best of times, but the fact that Richards also spends £200 per trim makes it even crazier.

Some quick maths tells us that the right-back turned pundit spends about £31,200 a year on haircuts, which, understandably, left his co-pundits flabbergasted. Their conversation gets us every time:

Thierry Henry: "What?"

Micah Richards: "I've got to look fly. £200 a time, yes. When I say the most, like I'll get a trim tomorrow for the Champions League, and I'm working the weekend, so I'll get a trim. I did it today. I've got to get a sharpen up tomorrow."

Henry: "You said you need to look fly…not like one."

Richards: "I should be putting it through expenses, shouldn't I?"

We all share Henry's confusion, although perhaps he isn't the best man for haircut advice.

Micah Richards' book

In February of this year, Richards released his first book, The Game: Player. Pundit. Fan.

You can get a good idea of the subject by the name alone, but the blurb fills you in on what to expect: 'The game isn't what it seems from the outside. The game isn't quite what I was expecting. The game doesn't always work like the people on television think it does. The game is better, worse and stranger than you can imagine, and that is coming from someone who saw it all with their own eyes.'

Now, you might expect a book from a former footballer and pundit to be, well, not very good. We all love the game, and we have our favourite players, but let's be honest, footballers aren't exactly renowned for their wit.

That said, Richards has always come across as different in that regard, as there isn't really another mainstream pundit that provides as much entertainment from their personality alone as he does, and according to reviews, that same joyous energy carries over to the written word.

Donald McRae of The Guardian was full of praise for the book, writing: '[A]n immensely readable book that takes us deep inside the strange and often unhinged hidden life of a Premier League footballer.'

McRae isn't alone in his enjoyment of the book either, with Goodreads giving it 3.9 out of 5, amazon 4.4 out of 5 and Waterstones 5 out of 5.

We might just have to give this one a read.

However, White's Arsenal team-mate and England midfielder Rice believes that his club colleague can become an asset for The Three Lions due to his versatility in defence. He further claimed that he will try and convince White to reverse his decision and make himself available for selection in the future.

WHAT DECLAN RICE SAID

Speaking to reporters, Rice said: "He’s a really unique player because he can play three positions. In tournaments, that’s so key. He can play centre-back, he can play right-back, he can play inverted full-back. When I get back I can have a conversation with him and see the ins and outs and see what he thinks. I would love him to come. I think Bukayo [Saka] would. I think Aaron Ramsdale would. I think we’re all going to be on him when we get back. Hopefully, he can change his mind."

Glamorgan skittled again in miserable season

Gloucestershire ended the opening day on 133 for 5 after the home team were dismissed for only 137

ECB Reporters Network10-Sep-2018
ScorecardGlamorgan endured another miserable day of a miserable season as Gloucestershire ended the opening day on 133 for 5, a slender deficit of four runs of after the home team were dismissed for only 137 in 38.1 overs. Unless Glamorgan can take some early wickets, then Gloucestershire should gain a sizeable lead on first innings.Any team playing on Glamorgan’s ground would fancy their chances of dismissing them for a modest total after an uncontested toss. Their fragile batting has been exposed time and again this season, and today was no exception as they collapsed to 21 for 5 before Chris Cooke and Graham Wagg staged a recovery.Glamorgan’s highest opening partnership in the last seven innings when they’ve batted first is 29, and there was only four on the scoreboard when Connor Brown became Craig Miles’ first victim. Tom Cullen quickly followed when he shouldered arms to Miles, then the visitors took three wickets in successive overs.Kiran Carlson was out first ball to David Payne, then Stephen Cook, Glamorgan’s newly acquired overseas player was strangled down the leg side when he touched one from Miles to the wicketkeeper – Cook having contributed just 25 runs in three innings since arriving from South Africa.Glamorgan were then rescued by Cooke and Wagg as they counter attacked effectively to add 83 in 16 overs for the sixth wicket. Cooke struck 60 from only 42 balls which included 44 in boundaries, but when he was out ten minutes before lunch, and Wagg shortly after the interval, the innings quickly folded.Payne and Miles claimed four wickets apiece as the ball swung in overcast conditions, although some Glamorgan batsmen, lacking in confidence, did contribute to their own downfall.Gloucestershire’s openers made a cautious start, taking seven overs to reach double figures before losing Chris Dent who was leg before to Michael Hogan, then four overs later Miles Hammond departed in similar fashion to Ruaidhri Smith’s first ball.James Bracey, who is allegedly being targeted by Division One clubs, was the next to go when he was caught down the legside by Cooke off Timm van der Gugten, who three balls later dismissed Gareth Roderick, who became the third lbw victim of the innings and the sixth in the game.Benny Howell top scored for the visitors with 43, but when Kieran Bull became the only spinner to bowl in the day, Howell mistimed a drive in his second over which resulted in a catch to mid-on.
