Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Rejaur Rahman Raja the new faces in Bangladesh Test squad

Shakib Al Hasan’s inclusion for first Test against Pakistan subject to fitness

Mohammad Isam22-Nov-2021Batter Mahmudul Hasan Joy and fast bowler Rejaur Rahman Raja have earned their maiden call-ups to the Bangladesh Test squad for the first match against Pakistan, to be held in Chattogram from November 26. The team management, meanwhile, is waiting for Shakib Al Hasan’s fitness assessment as he works his way back from a hamstring injury he suffered during the T20 World Cup last month.Bangladesh will be without Tamim Iqbal who was ruled out of the Test series with a second fracture on his left thumb, sustained during an Everest Premier League match in October. Mahmudullah isn’t part of the squad either, having announced his Test retirement during Bangladesh’s last Test in Harare in July.Chief selector Minhajul Abedin said that both Joy and Raja were rewarded for their form in the National Cricket League. Joy made back-to-back centuries for Chattogram Division, scoring 345 runs overall at an average of 57.69. Raja, who plays for Sylhet Division, took 12 wickets at an average of 16.91, with best match figures of 8 for 82.”It is still early days for him but Mahmudul has showed good temperament for the longer version,” Abedin said. “He is also an in-form batsman. With injury concerns to Taskin (Ahmed) and Shoriful (Islam), we needed to keep our pace-bowling options open and Raja got the nod.  We have been monitoring his performances in first-class competitions. He is strong and energetic and has a knack for taking wickets.”Abedin also said that the team would be reliant on the likes of captain Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim, especially if Shakib is unavailable.”There is a fair bit of experience if you consider that Mominul (Haque), Mushfiqur (Rahim), Shakib, Taijul (Islam) and Miraz (Mehidy Hasan) are all part of the squad,” he said. “We will obviously have to wait to see if Shakib makes it for the first Test but these players have been the most consistent performers for us in Tests and their presence can make a difference.”We have options in the spin department as well as in pace. The team for the first Test is made up of cricketers who have been playing together regularly and they know the demands of Test matches.”Abedin was wary of Pakistan’s strength but backed Bangladesh to come good. “Pakistan are a formidable team but we are confident that Bangladesh will be competitive if we are disciplined and patient.”Bangladesh squad for first Test: Mominul Haque (capt), Shadman Islam, Saif Hassan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim, Liton Das, Nurul Hasan, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nayeem Hasan, Taijul Islam, Ebadot Hossain, Abu Jayed, Yasir Ali, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Rejaur Rahman Raja, Shakib Al Hasan (subject to fitness)IN: Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Rejaur Rahman RajaOUT: Mahmudullah, Tamim Iqbal (thumb), Shoriful Islam (back), Taskin Ahmed

Aston Villa plotting swoop for "talented" teenager who’s sponsored by Nike

Aston Villa are among the clubs who are interested in signing a “talented” youngster who has been impressing in La Liga, according to a new report.

The Villans have had a disappointing few days, as they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup last week and then suffered a 4-1 hammering away at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon. Unai Emery will be hoping his side find their form once again as they face two tough games before the international break.

Emery personally wants to sign £15m ace for Aston Villa and Martinez could help

The Villans could be boosted by Martinez…

ByTom Cunningham Nov 3, 2024 Aston Villa transfer news

Football is now starting to enter its busiest and most crucial period as the winter calendar kicks in, and while that will be Villa’s full focus, they also appear to have their eyes on potential business for January.

La Liga is a league Emery knows well, and he is seemingly keen on adding some players from Spain’s top flight to his Villa squad. It was reported last week that Villa are interested in signing Getafe’s Christantus Uche, a midfielder who has been putting in some impressive performances to catch the eye of a few Premier League teams.

Monchi and NSWE also have their eye on another La Liga rising star, as Sevilla defender Loic Bade is also a player of interest to Villa. The club is looking to strengthen their options in defence, and they see Bade as an opportunity to do just that. But he is not the only Sevilla player on the radar.

Aston Villa plotting swoop for Sevilla's 19 year-old sensation

According to Caught Offside, Aston Villa have a strong interest in signing Sevilla player Stanis Idumbo. However, Villa are not the only Premier League team to be interested, as Sean Dyche’s Everton are also keen on the 19-year-old.

Idumbo, who has been described as being “talented”, joined the La Liga side during the last summer transfer window from Ajax. He started his football career in Club Brugge’s youth academy before moving to KAA Gent’s youth team. In 2021, he then joined Ajax’s under-17s and worked his way up to their under-21s in 2024.

This report states that scouts from Villa as well as Everton and Brighton have watched Idumbo live in action, most recently against Barcelona, and they were left impressed by what they saw. The Belgium under-21 star, who is sponsored by Nike, has only just broken through into the Sevilla first team but has been considered an exciting prospect during his time at Club Brugge and Ajax.

Sevilla are not looking to sell the attacking midfielder, which could mean that if Villa are keen on landing the player they may have to pay “big money”. Emery’s side do face strong opposition in the form of Borussia Dortmund and Benfica too, as well as suitors from the Premier League.

"Dangerous" Arsenal player tells Arteta he wants permanent exit in 2025

Arsenal could be set for a departure at the end of the season, with one of their players recently informing manager Mikel Arteta that he wants to leave the club.

Arsenal transfer news

Arteta is keen to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window, and it seems as though it may be a priority to bring in some competition for Bukayo Saka, given the recent links to the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Geovany Quenda.

The Gunners are also still on the lookout for a new striker, with Randal Kolo-Muani being considered for a loan deal, while up-and-coming RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko also remains an option, alongside Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres.

Arsenal tipped to make move for "sensational" £85m Premier League star

Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen his squad in January.

ByDominic Lund Nov 10, 2024

In the summer, Arteta was willing to part ways with academy graduates Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson, with the latter joining Fulham on a season-long loan deal, which leaves the manager a little light on numbers in attacking areas.

Now, it appears as though Nelson could be set for a permanent move away. Football Transfers have reported that Nelson has informed Arteta he wants to leave Arsenal on a permanent transfer in 2025 after his loan deal expires at the end of the season.

The 24-year-old is exploring a move to the Bundesliga, with his reps having already made contact with several German clubs, with Bayer Leverkusen and Union Berlin said to be potential options.

It appears unlikely the London-born winger makes his move to Fulham permanent, given that he has failed to establish himself in the first team at Craven Cottage, and the west London club have no obligation to sign him upon expiration of the loan deal.

Reiss Nelson set to leave

It seems as though the Englishman’s time at Arsenal is coming to an end, which is probably the best move for all parties, given that he has never managed to establish himself as a consistent first-team player.

Last season, the former Hoffenheim loanee appeared for just 257 minutes across 15 appearances in the Premier League, and his inability to break into the Fulham starting line-up indicates he does not have a long-term future at the Emirates Stadium.

That isn’t to say the former England U21 international can’t go on to be a success somewhere else, particularly if he secures a move back to Germany, where he weighed in with seven goals in 23 Bundesliga games during the 2018-19 campaign.

It was also not so long ago that Nelson was impressing in an Arsenal shirt, with analyst Ben Mattinson praising him at the beginning of the 2023-24 campaign:

However, given that he is now 24 years old and at a critical stage of his career, it is best for all parties if Nelson moves on permanently at the end of the season.

Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal has shed light upon his alleged fractious relationship with Robert Lewandowski, the oldest player in the squad and his fellow strike partner, admitting that things hadn't always been the best with the former Bayern Munich man.

During a match against Sevilla, Lewandowski was seen reprimanding Yamal after the youngster missed a promising chance, despite the striker being in a prime position to score.

Instead, Yamal took the shot himself, hitting the crossbar and leaving Lewandowski visibly frustrated. Lewandowski was also seen on camera gesturing with his hands to express his disapproval towards Yamal.

The 17-year-old, though, has cleared the air and assured that everything is now okay between the duo.

WHAT LAMINE YAMAL SAID

"Very well, we all get along really well this year," Yamal said when Mundo Deportivo asked him about his relationship with Lewandowski.

"It’s true that maybe last year, the context we were in, both as a club and as individuals, wasn’t the best… In the end, veteran players like Robert, who comes from winning the Champions League and all that, are a bit more worn out. And we, being younger, come with more energy.

"It’s normal, these things happen, and this year I think it’s clear that we’re doing great. Both Rapha and Robert with me, and me with Rapha and Robert… We’re perfect and eager to keep scoring goals."

Six and out for Boland? Australia's fast-bowling log jam for Sydney

Pat Cummins grateful he’s not a selector with some tough decisions to made in Sydney

Andrew McGlashan29-Dec-2021Last week left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel was left out of the New Zealand Test squad the match after taking all 10 wickets in an innings against India. It is not inconceivable that Scott Boland becomes another name on the list of those left out after a spectacular display with no certainty that he will line up at the SCG despite taking 6 for 7 on debut.Boland tore through England on the third morning in Melbourne having claimed two wickets in his opening over the evening before. It earned him the Johnny Mullagh medal as Player of the Match in an historic and emotional occasion. It has added to the fast-bowling riches Australia’s selectors currently have to choose from having had to explore the depth on offer during this Ashes – with outstanding results. Boland, Jhye Richardson and Michael Neser have all featured alongside the ‘big three’ and it is a credit to them (although also a sad indictment of England’s batting) that the absences of Pat Cummins in Adelaide and Josh Hazlewood in the last two Tests has barely been felt.Related

Scott Boland's blitz – how MCG six-for sealed Ashes

During the MCG Test, Hazlewood returned to bowling in the nets and was hopeful of being ready for his home-ground fixture in Sydney but there is no need to rush him if any doubts remain over the side strain he picked up in Brisbane.Richardson suffered some lower left shin pain after his successful return in Adelaide where he claimed five wickets in the second innings with a cautious approach taken over him by being left out in Melbourne. Boland, with his six-wicket haul, may have pushed ahead of Neser in the pecking order although his selection has been termed ‘horses for courses’ due to his fine record at the MCG.But figures of 6 for 7 become hard to ignore and the Sydney pitch may be another to suit Boland’s wicket-to-wicket lengths. In five first-class matches at the SCG he has 15 wickets at 24.73.”It’s one of those good days where as captain I can firmly say I’m not a selector because good luck to them,” Cummins said. “The niggle to Jhye presented the opportunity to Scotty but I thought it was a really brave call by the selectors to bring in Scotty for this game and full credit, they’ve made the right call. Jhye will hopefully be available, Josh will hopefully be available, no idea. It’s a luxury at the moment.”Scott Boland has been the latest Australia quick to make their mark•Getty ImagesOne option available is to potentially rest Mitchell Starc who is the only Australia frontline quick to have played all three matches so far although there will be a reluctance not to have someone in such fine form in the continued push for a whitewash. One factor that may be considered is that the final Test in Hobart will be with the pink ball which is where Starc can be so dangerous.Starc is the leading wicket-taker in the series with 14 at 19.64. He claimed a wicket with the first ball in Brisbane, took on the senior role in Adelaide and was a central figure in the electric final hour on the second day in Melbourne.”For me, he’s been just about the player of the series so far. Just fantastic,” Cummins said. “We saw in Adelaide how he lifted and led the attack. Think this summer he was gone to a new level. He’s experienced, but he’s found another gear, with the ball that’s not swinging he’s beating the outside edge consistently.”He’s been titanic for us. We spoke at the start of the summer how there was external pressure, but zero internal pressure. We know what a superstar he is. He’ll go down as one of the all-time great Aussie bowlers. We’ve got to remember that sometimes. He’s shown his class in all conditions. Feel so lucky to have someone like that in the team.”The one specialist bowler in the Australia squad yet to feature is uncapped legspinner Mitchell Swepson and while it would appear unlikely he will play in this series Cummins indicated there would be an open mind going into the SCG.Swepson will likely be needed in Australia’s upcoming overseas assignments next year and has been a regular part of Test squads over the last 18 months without being able to join Nathan Lyon in the XI. The development of Cameron Green’s bowling opens the door for a twin-spin attack but they will be wary of overburdening the allrounder and have seen England’s vulnerability to pace.”It might be a spinning track and you’ve got Mitchell Swepson bowling beautifully. It’s a luxury at the moment,” Cummins said. “If Swepson debuted and then suddenly he’s off to a subcontinent tour, you’d think that experience would be a good thing for just about everyone.”Once you play one your next one’s probably going to be a little bit better. But it’s an Ashes series, we’re going to pick the best 11 that we think is going to win that Test match in Sydney.”

Sylhet Sunrisers opened their account in BPL 2022 with a seven-wicket win over Minister Group Dhaka. It was a clinical win, too. They skittled Dhaka for 100 in 18.4 overs and then knocked off the runs with three overs to spare.Left-arm spinner Nazmul Islam took his maiden four-for in T20s to hasten the collapse. However, two of his four scalps were aided by poor lbw calls.Mohammad Naim was given out despite getting a glove while attempting a reverse sweep, while Andre Russell was sent back despite getting an inside edge onto his front pad. Tamim Iqbal, too, seemed unsatisfied with his lbw decision; the ball having appeared to have struck him even though he was well forward.Dhaka went up in a protest as Mahmudullah was seen talking to the on-field umpires, even as some of their other players engaged with the fourth umpire. The absence of DRS suddenly became a massive talking point.Sylhet made light work of the chase, though, with Anamul Haque hitting 45. He fell with two to win, before Ravi Bopara hit the winning runs.Big hit
It was Sylhet’s bowling that put Dhaka on the back foot. Sohag Gazi and captain Mosaddek Hossain reduced them to 17 for three in the sixth over. Gazi finished early, taking 2 for 17 off his four overs.Nazmul continued the good work by bowling stump-to-stump. He removed Naim and Russell in the 13th over. His third scalp was that of Mahmudullah caught at short fine-leg, before trapping Shuvagata Hom lbw for 21.The spinners dried up the boundaries, as Dhaka managed their first six only in the 16th over. Taskin Ahmed then rounded off the innings with three late strikes, finishing with 3 for 22 from his 2.4 overs.Big miss

Newcastle have already lined up "brilliant" £20m Dubravka replacement

With Martin Dubravka on course to become a free agent and leave the club at the end of the season, Newcastle United have already reportedly lined up a potential replacement.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies seem to be thinking ahead this summer in what would be a refreshing change following the disaster of the previous summer window. Spending the majority of the open market on a failed pursuit to sign Marc Guehi, Newcastle ended the summer without several much-needed reinforcements and endured a slow start to the campaign.

Only recently getting back on track, Alexander Isak’s return to goalscoring form has helped Eddie Howe’s side put their slow start behind them and begin to look upwards, especially after defeating high-flying Nottingham Forest before the international break.

Qualifying for European football will undoubtedly be the aim, and that would go a long way towards welcoming a number of targets when it comes to the attraction of Newcastle’s project.

Newcastle now willing to gamble on signing "fantastic" main target in 2025

He’s a former Premier League star…

ByTom Cunningham Nov 17, 2024

However, one player who currently looks destined to head in the other direction is Martin Dubravka. The 35-year-old has been an admirable backup over the last few years at St James’ Park, but looks unlikely to sign a new contract and could leave on a free deal next summer.

As clubs in the Saudi Pro League reportedly circle for his signature, those on Tyneside have seemingly set their sights on a replacement. According to the Sunday Mirror, (via Sports View), Newcastle have already lined up James Trafford to replace Dubravka and will pursue the Burnley shot-stopper next summer.

Reportedly valued at just £20m, Trafford should be well within Newcastle’s range. They’ll want to make no mistake this time around, though, having missed out on the 22-year-old’s signature last summer to add to their woes amid profit and sustainability concerns. One of a few deals that they failed to get over the line despite their reported interest, Newcastle must not once again next summer.

"Brilliant" Trafford could push Pope all the way

Now 32 years old, the arrival of a goalkeeper 10 years his junior would no doubt leave Nick Pope at risk of losing his Newcastle place, either as soon as next season or in the years to come. Howe could swiftly swap the old for the new by welcoming Trafford into his side or perhaps wait for Pope to step aside courtesy of his age and have a ready-made replacement raring to go.

James Trafford for Burnley.

The Burnley star earned a lot of praise even as the Clarets were relegated last season, including from Arsenal legend Ian Wright, who said on Match of the Day (via the Burnley Express): “He was brilliant, I was delighted for him. Coming into the Burnley side after a £19m move, Vincent Kompany has shown a lot of faith in him and he made some very, very good saves.

"A lot of the Burnley fans weren’t quite sure simply because of [Arijanet] Muric and how well he had done to come up, but he made some fantastic saves."

Bayern closing on on Bundesliga titleQuestions asked of Belgian coachLahm calls for patience at Allianz ArenaFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

That is the opinion of club legend Philipp Lahm, who worked under the most demanding of Catalan coaches at the Allianz Arena. Considerable success was enjoyed across three years with Guardiola at the helm, with the current Manchester City boss famed for his relentless pursuit of perfection.

AdvertisementGetty/GOALTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Kompany, who captained Premier League giants City under Guardiola’s tutelage, is now calling the shots in Munich. He appears to be on course to recapture the Bundesliga title, but questions are being asked of whether the 38-year-old will make it beyond one full season in the dugout.

WHAT PHILIPP LAHM SAID

Lahm has told of Kompany’s methods, with there still room for improvement: "It is obvious that Kompany was influenced by his former coach, Guardiola, who revolutionised modern possession football. Guardiola paid attention to absolutely everything in training. He was like a composer obsessed with every note that his orchestra played and would make his view clear to everyone about everything.

"Kompany is not a copy; every student goes their own way. He also favours possession and wants to dominate the game. His Bayern team defend courageously man-to-man, which means a high level of risk. However, he seems to give his players more freedom than Guardiola.

"The defence has stabilised under Kompany. In recent years, there has been a lack of concentration, no clear hierarchy among the players and many goals conceded. Now Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae seem to form a secure duo. Joshua Kimmich’s role in central midfield is also more clearly defined. Kompany’s signature is evident in his organisation, but also in his patience when playing with the ball.

"Does his attacking style work at the highest level? There is still a lack of evidence. His team have difficulties with their overall balance and a few areas are not operating yet at the highest level. The midfield, for example, is susceptible to counter attacks. The possession can often be too slow, the progress towards goal is sometimes indecisive, and there is a lack of penetration in that final third, where attacks too often break down."

Lahm added on the debate regarding the Belgian’s future: "Kompany needs time and support, and Bayern is not an easy club to work for given the need for success in the short term. After all, the last coach to stay longer than three years was Hitzfeld. That’s the downside of being a players’ club. But I trust him to develop the team and refine his playing ideas. He has the tools to succeed."

Kane got the ball rolling for Bayern Munich with a ninth-minute goal as he converted a powerful header from Michael Olise's cross. Just six minutes after the star striker broke the deadlock, Jeremie Frimpong had a huge chance to equalise when he intercepted a weak back pass from Dayot Upamecano and found himself one on one with Manuel Neuer. However, the veteran goalkeeper came off his line and blocked the shot.

Jamal Musiala should have doubled Bayern's lead in the 22nd minute when he attempted a header from close range from Joshua Kimmich's ball in but he agonisingly hit the woodwork.

Ten minutes after the break, Musiala made amends for his earlier miss as he finally found the back of the net following a howler from Leverkusen goalkeeper Matej Kovar. The Czech stopper let Kimmich's cross through his hands and Musiala was on hand to capitalise. To add to Xabi Alonso's misery, Nordi Mukiele picked up a second yellow card for a terrible challenge on Kingsley Coman and reduced his team to 10 men.

Kane then took the game and tie away from Leverkusen as he completed his brace with a spot-kick. Edmond Tapsoba brought down the Three Lions star with a ridiculous challenge inside the box and, from the resulting penalty, the frontman made it 3-0. This is the first time since 2022 that the Bavarian giants have registered a win against their Bundesliga rivals.

Kane ended his brief four-game goal drought in style as he scored a brace in his team's convincing win in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie. He opened the scoring with a powerful header in the ninth minute and then scored the goal that should ensure their passage to the next round in the 75th minute from the penalty spot. The England captain now has 31 goals to his name across all competitions in the 2024-25 campaign.

Kovar had a night to forget as his howler allowed Bayern to double their lead early in the second half. The Czech had to make a routine collection of a seemingly harmless long ball from Kimmich but he made a mess of it, allowing Musiala to pounce on the ball and roll it into an empty net.
