Mandhana, Rodrigues and Rana help India win battle of nerves and remain in the hunt for gold

Chasing 165, England began brightly before being undone by a spate of run-outs

Shashank Kishore06-Aug-2022Undaunted by their opponent’s might and undeterred by their own history of faltering under pressure, India rose to the occasion in front of 17,000 fans to beat England in a tight contest and set up a bout for the gold medal at CWG 2022.Smriti Mandhana’s pulsating half-century and Jemimah Rodrigues’ finishing act set up a strong total, which the bowlers defended after overcoming an insipid start. With her team needing 27 off 12 balls, Nat Sciver threatened a jailbreak as England scored 13 – including a monstrous Sciver six – off the first four balls of Pooja Vastrakar’s 19th over. Sciver, however, looked to scamper a tight second run off the next ball and became the third England batter to be run out in the innings. With England needing 14 off off the final over, offspinner Sneh Rana went full and straight to deny the batters elevation, and India squeezed home by four runs.Having endured a massive heartbreak, England, unbeaten in the competition until today, will have to turn up in less than 24 hours for their bronze-medal playoff. India, meanwhile, are through to the final where they will play the winner of the second semi-final, the trans-Tasman clash between New Zealand and Australia.Mandhana’s blast upfront
Mandhana had been timing the ball superbly all tournament, and it was no different on Saturday. An exhibition of clean ball-striking and a game without half-measures delivered a 23-ball half-century to set the game up after India elected to bat. Very early in the innings, she put pressure on the 17-year-old offspinner Alex Capsey and the inexperienced Issy Wong, whom she pulled disdainfully over the ropes in front of square to lay down a marker. India raised their fifty in just 4.3 overs – it was their quickest effort in T20Is – and at the end of the powerplay they had moved to 64 without loss. The double-strike
From a comfortable 76 for 0 in the eighth over, India slipped as Shafali Verma and Mandhana fell in the space of five deliveries. Shafali holed out to mid-off while trying to muscle one down the ground, and Mandhana fell while attempting a scoop off a full delivery that had no pace on it. These dismisals coincided with England tightening the screws as overs 8-11 produced just 12 runs. Harmanpreet Kaur broke the shackles with two fours and a six in overs 12-14, but was out soon after, brilliantly caught by Maia Bouchier running in from deep backward square leg. After 14 overs, India were 113 for 3, in the midst of a slowdown.ESPNcricinfo LtdThe finish
Like as in the game against Barbados, Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma had a platform from where they could launch India to a strong total. They began by playing touch cricket, mindful of another wicket exposing the lower order, and thereafter began to change gears. Rodrigues was particularly impressive with her footwork against spin, stepping to the leg side to repeatedly hit inside-out over cover. Deepti was a touch more adventurous, exposing all three stumps and using Sophie Ecclestone’s pace to scoop her for back-to-back boundaries to begin India’s final ascent. They added 53 off just 38 balls to give India momentum and a score they would have perhaps taken at the toss. Rodrigues ended unbeaten on 44 off 31 after chugging along at a run a ball for large parts of her knock.Dunkley, Wyatt throw seamers off the rails
Renuka Singh Thakur began India’s defence with a no-ball that Sophia Dunkley thumped for four, and followed up with a free-hit that was walloped over midwicket. One legal delivery into the innings, England had nine runs on the board and were in the mood to keep punching. The first two overs went for 24, and India went to Plan B, bringing on Deepti’s offspin. It seemed to work immediately as Dunkley was out lbw attempting a premeditated sweep. But any relief India may have had from the wicket was quickly offset as Danni Wyatt continued to plunder runs off the pacers. England were neck and neck with India’s powerplay score, getting to 58 for 1 after the first six overs.Taniya Bhatia breaks the stumps to catch a diving Nat Sciver short•Getty ImagesThe spin strangle
After Deepti delivered the initial breakthrough, India turned to their second offspinner Rana. Where Deepti bowled a touch flatter, Rana gave the ball a lovely loop, unperturbed by the batters attempting to either step out or even try the reverse-sweep. She got some early breathing space when India got their second wicket two balls into her spell – Capsey run out – and she took the big wicket of Wyatt in her second over, playing on while trying to shuffle across and scoop a fullish delivery from outside off stump. At 81 for 3 in nine overs, the game was in the balance.Sciver, Jones threaten jailbreak
Sciver and Amy Jones steadied the innings after the fall of Wyatt, as England hit just two boundaries in overs 10-15. But they milked enough runs in that period to stay in the hunt, as England went into the last five overs needing 48. India, intent on taking the pace off, gave part-time offspinner Shafali the 16th over, and Jones hit her for back-to-back fours to bring the equation down to a manageable 33 off 24 with six wickets in hand. But both Jones and Sciver were run out, with England back under pressure following a tight 17th over from Deepti, and India were on top once more. Rana eventually nailed her full lengths in the final over to close out the game. Deepti and Rana finished with combined figures of 3 for 46 from eight overs, which proved decisive in the end.

Brighton to battle with German giants Bayern Munich for £68m "elite talent"

Brighton & Hove Albion are set to battle it out with German giants Bayern Munich for a young player who has been described as an “elite talent”, according to a new report.

Brighton latest news

After a worrying run of no wins in eight Premier League games, Brighton are now back to winning ways having taken six points from their last two matches. The Seagulls first beat struggling Ipswich Town 2-0 at Portman Road, before they then thumped Manchester United 3-1 at the weekend.

Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter were all on the scoresheet in a comprehensive win for Fabian Hurzeler’s side, which the German manager described as “a good game for us”.

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler shakes hands with CarlosBaleba

“After the first goal we got a bit passive but after they scored we dominated and controlled the game,” he said after the match. “We deserved to win. We changed some small margins at half-time which made us stronger and of course we had some great individual quality on the pitch. It’s all about how intense you press and stay in your structure and we did that well.”

On his side finally turning draws into wins again, Hurlezer said: “In the Premier League every game is competitive and unpredictable.

“You have to work for the momentum you make and in the last two games and in the FA Cup game we’ve had that belief. If you can outwork an opponent then you can outplay them and I’m happy that we’ve been able to do that in the recent games.”

Brighton to battle Bayern for Diomande

Despite being ninth in the Premier League table, Hurzeler still reportedly wants to add some new players to his squad in the January transfer window. According to Tipsbladet, per Sports Witness, one of those is Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande.

The 21-year-old centre-back has been a regular for Sporting since joining them from Danish side FC Midtjylland in 2023, making 80 appearances and scoring four goals.

Tipsbladet claim that Brighton are set to battle none other than Bayern Munich for the signature of the Ivory Coast international, with both clubs having already made contact with Sporting about a potential move.

The Portuguese club, however, are insisting that Diomande’s £68 million release clause must be activated if he’s to leave the Estádio José Alvalade this month.

Sporting CP's Daniel Braganca reacts withOusmaneDiomandeafter being substituted

Diomande, who was signed by Sporting while the now Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim was in charge, has previously been described by football talent scout Jacek Kulig as an “elite talent”.

“You rarely see a player with such high ball-playing and pure defender skills,” Kulig wrote on X of Diomande. “There are some tactical improvements but I’m quite sure this kid will play for the best teams in the world.”

The defender’s former Ivory Coast boss Jean-Louis Gasset has also heaped similar praise on him, saying, according to the Express: “He’s one of the 25 best under-19 central defenders in the world and he does everything well. He plays in Portugal, he’s going to play in top leagues, he’s going to play in the Champions League or the Europa League.”

According to the , he has been offered a seven-figure sum in a lucrative book deal. Editors at Penguin Random House are said to have made that move as one of the biggest players in the publishing world.

They commissioned Prince Harry’s autobiography ‘Spare’, which sent shockwaves through the royal family and saw the son of King Charles paid a supposed £15m ($20m) up front. Lineker believes that he should be valued closer to that figure.

A source has told the Mail: “Gary's team were pretty sniffy about the opening offer, even though it's a million pounds. There was a view that it was derisory. Everyone knows what a stir Prince Harry's book made, so they were interested.

“Gary is outspoken when he wants to be so it could be the perfect combination. It is the same commissioning editor who commissioned the Duke of Sussex who is now after Gary but Gary hasn't yet signed the deal.

“He has never done an autobiography before so he thought he'd be able to command even more cash, but at the moment the negotiations are ongoing. Maybe it would be a case of not saying so much about his private life but more about football.

“Obviously the publishers know the real value is getting Gary to talk about his marriages and his personal life for the first time but he seems to think just his football insights are worth the cash.”

Man City may regret selling £50m ace who could have been their own Marmoush

Manchester City have held back with their spending in the January transfer window. A terrible run of form between October and December meant the Citizens are only fourth in the Premier League, with 38 points to their name. The 12-point gap between them and Liverpool seems like it could be too big to close.

Yet, that has not stopped them from spending copious amounts of money to try and fix the issues. Two of those have been defensive signings, bringing in Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens for £33.6m plus add-ons. Brazilian talent Vitor Reis also joined the club from Palmeiras for £29.6m.

Palmeiras'VitorReisin action

Not only have they brought in some defensive reinforcements, but City have also added some attacking depth to the squad, notably signing Omar Marmoush.

Why Man City signed Omar Marmoush

The deal for City to sign Marmoush was confirmed on Thursday morning, just hours after their 4-2 defeat away to Paris Saint-Germian in the Champions League. The Egyptian forward cost an initial £59m, with City set to pay an extra £4.2m in add-ons.

It has been a really impressive season for the 25-year-old so far. The forward has 20 goals and 14 assists in just 26 games across all competitions for Eintracht Frankfurt, registering a goal involvement in all but seven matches.

Perhaps the best contribution from the Egyptian this term came against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich. He scored twice and assisted once in a 3-3 draw versus Vincent Kompany’s side, a hugely impressive performance against one of Europe’s heavyweights.

Although he can play out wide or as a second striker, Marmoush has mainly played as a centre-forward this term. That is exactly what the Citizens need, with Erling Haaland the only recognised number nine in the first-team squad.

However, if the 2022/23 treble winners had put their faith in the academy talents they produce, there is another player who could have seamlessly fitted into the City squad this season.

The academy star Man City let get away

The player in question here is Ipswich Town striker and former City academy star Liam Delap. It has been an extraordinary season so far for the 21-year-old, since making a £20m move to East Anglia over the summer.

Delap was part of a golden generation in the City academy, which included the likes of Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers. There is certainly an argument to say that City should have kept all of those players, given what they have gone on to achieve. However, selling Delap should be right up there given they sold Julian Alvarez last summer.

So far this season, the England U21 international has eight goals and two assists in 21 games for the Tractor Boys. That is impressive in itself, but even more so when you consider how much Kieran McKenna’s side are struggling; they currently sit 18th in the Premier League.

The former City star has scored and assisted in the same game three times this season, including matchwinning contributions away to Tottenham Hotspur and at home against top-four contenders Chelsea.

He has proven why he is a “top striker in the making”, as football talent scout Jacek Kulig described him.

His underlying numbers via Sofascore this term are impressive. Like Marmoush, he is clearly a clinical striker, with a 22% conversion rate to go along with his eight goals. Delap also works hard off the ball, winning 4.5 duels per game.

Valued at a reported £50m by Ipswich according to journalist Simon Phillips, the striker’s trajectory this season has been immense. Whilst his numbers are not on the same level as Marmoush, he is playing for a side threatened with Premier League relegation.

Perhaps Pep Guardiola’s side could have saved themselves the money and kept Delap rather than buying the Egyptian striker. Although the Frankfurt talent joins the club on the back of some good form, maybe the Citizens should have put trust in a key member of their 2020 FA Youth Cup-winning side.

SA20 auction: Tristan Stubbs the biggest buy, Donavon Ferreira creates a stir

Big payday for Jansen brothers too, but South Africa captains Dean Elgar and Temba Bavuma go unsold

Deivarayan Muthu19-Sep-2022South Africa power-hitter Tristan Stubbs fetched the highest bid of Rand 9.2 million (USD 520,000 approx.) at the inaugural SA20 player auction in Cape Town on Monday. Sunrisers Eastern Cape won a fierce bidding war against MI Cape Town and Johannesburg Super Kings to snap up their homegrown star-in-the-making.Uncapped 24-year-old batter Donavon Ferreira, who plays for Titans in the South African domestic circuit, created a big stir. Having listed his base price at Rand 175,000 (USD 10,000 approx.), Ferreira, who also bowls a bit and keeps wicket, was eventually snapped up by Super Kings for Rand 5.5 million (USD 310,000 approx.) in the accelerated round of the auction. The winning bid came after some chaos, as Paarl Royals and Pretoria Capitals both tried to outbid Super Kings but were forced to pull out as they didn’t have much left in their purse at that point and had other spots still to fill – if they were allowed to keep bidding, they would have run out of the money needed to fill their quota of 17 players. Ferreira has played 19 T20s so far, and boasts a strike rate of 148.26 and an average of 54.85.

The Jansen brothers – Duan and Marco – were also in demand, with Marco joining Stubbs at Sunrisers for Rand 6.1 million (USD 344,000 approx.) and Duan going to MI for Rand 3.3 million (USD 186,000 approx.). Marco is already part of the Sunrisers franchise in the IPL, while Duan was recently with the Mumbai Indians development squad that toured the UK.Kolpak-returnee Rilee Rossouw, who has played T20 cricket around the world, also hit paydirt, with Capitals forking out Rand 6.9 million (USD 389,000 approx.) for him. Wayne Parnell, another Kolpak returnee, also triggered a bidding war, which was won by Capitals too. They outbid Super Kings and got the left-arm seam-bowling allrounder for Rand 5.6 million (USD 316,000 approx). However, there were no takers for South Africa’s T20I captain Temba Bavuma and Test captain Dean Elgar.Rilee Rossouw, Tristan Stubbs and Marco Jansen were among the top picks in the inaugural SA20 auction•ESPNcricinfo LtdThe SA20 auction continued what has been a meteoric rise in T20 cricket for Stubbs. In the 2021-2022 CSA T20 challenge, Stubbs hit 293 runs in seven innings at an incredible strike rate of 183.12. In IPL 2022, Mumbai Indians signed him up as a replacement for the injured Tymal Mills when he was still an uncapped player. He batted just four balls across two innings, though, managing just two runs. But then, in his first outing with the bat in international cricket, Stubbs clubbed a 28-ball 72 from No. 6 as South Africa threatened to hunt down 235 against England in the Bristol T20I. Following that, he joined Manchester Originals for the Hundred, where his part-time offspin was also matched up with left-hand batters. Stubbs can also keep wicket, if needed, and he is open to doing any job for Sunrisers in the SA20.”Yeah, I mean it’s crazy and I’m still shaking,” Stubbs told the host broadcaster. “It’s crazy! I played most of my cricket in St George’s [Park, which will be the home of Sunrisers Eastern Cape] and I really enjoy playing cricket there. Like Neil [McKenzie, the former South Africa batter] said after the SA A tour [I’ve been travelling everywhere]. I really enjoyed the Hundred and played seven consecutive games. I do feel I have more experience and I have played more cricket in different situations. The Hundred comp helped my bowling more and look to keep evolving. I’m open to whatever the team needs [from me]. There is nothing better than playing in front of a full crowd, and hopefully we can put on a spectacle for everyone and the crowds will pull in. Very cool to be playing with ‘Plank’…I mean [Marco] Jansen.”Shamsi reunites with Fortuin at Royals
Royals had jumped into the action first up on the day, picking up fast bowler Lungi Ngidi and left-arm wristspinner Tabraiz Shamsi, who were the first two players to go under the hammer. Royals then reunited Shamsi with left-arm fingerspinner Bjorn Fortuin – the pair had worked well together for Paarl Rocks when they won the Mzansi Super League title in 2019.MI brought back left-arm seamer Beuran Henricks, who has been part of their IPL franchise. They also recruited left-arm fingerspin-bowling allrounder George Linde and 20-year-old Afghanistan left-arm wristspinner Waqar Salamkheil to back up Rashid Khan.Super Kings pack their side with pace
Super Kings, who are used to building their side around spin in Chennai, went the other way in South Africa, packing their squad with high pace to suit the Wanderers pitch. They spent Rand 2.10 million on Alzarri Joseph, who has been in terrific form in the ongoing CPL for St Lucia Kings. Lizaad Williams, George Garton and Lewis Gregory will join him in Super Kings’ attack, along with pre-auction signings Gerald Coetzee and Romario Shepherd.Neesham, Morgan, Odean Smith find takers in accelerated auction
New Zealand allrounder James Neesham, West Indies allrounder Odean Smith and former England captain Eoin Morgan, who all went unsold in the early exchanges, found takers at the final round of the auction. Neesham went to Capitals, Smith to MI, and Morgan to Royals. Daryn Dupavillon, who can hit speeds upwards of 140kph and is presently with Trinbago Knight Riders at the CPL, earned a deal worth Rand 1.7 million with Capitals.SquadsDurban Super Giants: Quinton de Kock, Prenelan Subrayen, Jason Holder, Kyle Mayers, Reece Topley, Dwaine Pretorius, Heinrich Klaasen, Keemo Paul, Keshav Maharaj, Kyle Abbott, Junior Dala, Dilshan Madushanka, Johnson Charles, Matthew Breetzke, Christiaan Jonker, Wiaan Mulder, Simon HarmerJo’burg Super Kings: Faf du Plessis, Gerald Coetzee, Maheesh Theekshana, Romario Shepherd, Harry Brook, Janneman Malan, Reeza Hendricks, Kyle Verreynne, George Garton, Alzarri Joseph, Leus du Plooy, Lewis Gregory, Lizaad Williams, Donavon Ferreira, Nandre Burger, Malusi Siboto, Caleb SelekaMI Cape Town: Kagiso Rabada, Dewald Brevis, Rashid Khan, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, Rassie van der Dussen, Ryan Rickelton, George Linde, Beuran Hendricks, Duan Jansen, Delano Potgieter, Grant Roelofsen, Wesley Marshall, Olly Stone, Waqar Salamkheil, Ziyaad Abharams, Odean SmithPaarl Royals: David Miller, Corbin Bosch, Jos Buttler, Obed McCoy, Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi, Jason Roy, Dane Vilas, Bjorn Fortuin, Wihan Lubbe, Ferisco Adams, Imraan Manack, Evan Jones, Ramon Simmonds, Mitchell van Buuren, Eoin Morgan, Codi YusufPretoria Capitals: Anrich Nortje, Migael Pretorius, Rilee Rossouw, Phil Salt, Wayne Parnell, Josh Little, Shaun von Berg, Adil Rashid, Cameron Delport, Will Jacks, Theunis de Bruyn, Marco Marais, Kusal Mendis, Daryn Dupavillon, Jimmy Neesham, Eathan Bosch, Shane DadswellSunrisers Eastern Cape: Aiden Markram, Ottniel Baartman, Marco Jansen, Tristan Stubbs, Sisanda Magala, Junaid Dawood, Mason Crane, JJ Smuts, Jordan Cox, Adam Rossington, Roelof van der Merwe, Marques Ackerman, James Fuller, Tom Abell, Aya Gqamane, Sarel Erwee, Brydon Carse

Chelsea player ratings vs Fulham: Blues aren't done yet – Pedro Neto stunner keeps Enzo Maresca's side in Champions League qualification race after teen star Tyrique George gets Cole Palmer & co. out of jail

The Stamford Bridge outfit completed a brilliant late comeback in the west London derby to keep their top-five hopes alive

Chelsea kept their hopes of securing a return to the Champions League alive as Pedro Neto's stoppage-time strike completed a come-from-behind, 2-1 win for the Blues over local rivals Fulham on Sunday.

Fulham, who were dominant throughout but simply lacked a cutting edge, had the ball in the net within five minutes against a disjointed Chelsea side, as Andreas Pereira turned the ball home, but Ryan Sessegnon was offside in the build-up. In the 20th minute, however, the Cottagers did score, with Alex Iwobi slamming a superb low finish into the bottom corner.

Ten minutes after the resumption of the second half, Neto had a huge chance to equalise, but his effort from 10 yards out was well-saved by Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

The hosts enjoyed a degree of comfort throughout the second half until Enzo Maresca chose to substitute striker Nicolas Jackson and replace him with 19-year-old Tyrique George, who pulled the Blues level with a fine strike from the edge of the box in the 83rd minute. And Neto then scored a superb winner in injury time, spinning and powering a brilliant half-volley into the roof of the net, earning Chelsea three points in what can be fairly termed as a smash-and-grab victory.

Robert Sanchez (5/10):

Went down in stages for Iwobi's goal, though it was a fine finish. Distribution was poor but kept control of his area throughout.

Reece James (2/10):

Lost the ball before Iwobi scored. An error he couldn't afford to make. Subbed at half-time after a dire display.

Trevoh Chalobah (7/10):

Good on the ball as ever and did well against the threat of Jimenez. Continued to perform when shifted to full-back.

Levi Colwill (5/10):

Booked and appeared rather timid thereafter. Struggled immensely in the air.

Marc Cucurella (6/10):

Slightly overwhelmed by Fulham's vibrancy but did well to put his body on the line repeatedly. Consistently a player for the big occasion.

Enzo Fernandez (6/10):

Iwobi burst past him to score the opener. Erratic in his output on the ball but fizzes with energy and gets forward often.

Moises Caicedo (5/10):

Surrendered possession a couple of times. Not as effective as he usually is, but constantly willing to put his foot in, though was booked as a result.

Getty Images SportAttack

Noni Madueke (4/10):

Barely got into the game. Two successful dribbles but couldn't manage to get a shot on target, nor did he create a chance. Subbed at half-time.

Cole Palmer (4/10):

Took a couple of pot-shots. Struggled to find any space and impact the game. Went missing and was indebted to both George and Neto.

Pedro Neto (7/10):

Missed a huge chance as Leno denied him from 10 yards out. The most threatening of the frontline, and underlined that with a gorgeous winning goal in injury time, spinning and powering an effort into the roof of the net.

Nicolas Jackson (4/10):

Not brave enough to gamble on balls into the box and limited his own threat as a result. Subbed. He doesn't really have the strength or ability to lead this Chelsea line.

Malo Gusto (6/10):

Replaced James. Played fine, with Chelsea beginning to dominate territory, but took a knock and needed substituting himself.

Jadon Sancho (5/10):

On for Madueke at half-time. Struggled somewhat, much like the man he replaced.

Tyrique George (8/10):

Replaced Jackson at 1-0 with 10 minutes left. Scored the equaliser with a great effort. An electric performance; the teenager has an immensely bright future.

Tosin Adarabioyo (N/A):

Replaced Gusto, who appeared to sustain an injury.

Enzo Maresca (6/10):

This was a rough performance but his decision to introduce George proved inspired. Chelsea have so much work to do, though, as they are immensely fortunate to have completed their comeback here. They remain in the Champions League race… just.

Fractured thumb puts Pretorius out of India ODIs as well as T20 World Cup

Marco Jansen has been called up to the ODI side and an update on the T20 World Cup squad is expected soon

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Oct-2022South Africa allrounder Dwaine Pretorius has been ruled out of the ongoing ODI series in India as well as the upcoming men’s T20 World Cup – that begins later this month in Australia – after fracturing his left thumb. He picked up the injury during the third T20I against India on Tuesday in Indore, the only game South Africa won in the three-match contest.”The nature of the injury requires surgical intervention and Dwaine will consult the Cricket South Africa designated hand surgeon on arrival in South Africa,” CSA chief medical officer Dr Shuaib Manjra said. “Normal rehabilitation procedures will follow to ensure he speedily returns to playing cricket.”Marco Jansen has been added to South Africa’s ODI squad. Jansen is also part of the three-man reserves’ list for the T20 World Cup, along with Andile Phehlukwayo and Bjorn Fortuin, and could be the frontrunner to replace Pretorius in that squad as well. This is South Africa’s second injury blow ahead of the T20 World Cup after Rassie van der Dussen was ruled out with a broken finger. Van der Dussen sustained the injury during the second Test against England in Manchester and is expected to return to fitness for the Tests against Australia in December.Temba Bavuma will lead South Africa at the World Cup. At the time of announcing the squad – which has one more fast-bowling allrounder in Wayne Parnell – on September 6, CSA had confirmed that Bavuma would play as an opener, though his horror run at the T20I series in India could force a change of plans.

With 14 goals and 22 assists across all competitions this season, the teenage sensation is playing a pivotal role in fuelling Barcelona's treble hopes – and the first of the three silverware will be up for grabs this Saturday during the Copa del Rey final against arch-rivals Real Madrid.

Yamal’s performances have ignited a wave of admiration among supporters. His jersey has quickly become one of the most popular items at the club’s official store, and his name is frequently seen and chanted in the stands of the Olympic Stadium. The young winger admitted that seeing this kind of support is still a surreal experience.

WHAT YAMAL SAID

Speaking to during a promotional appearance for Powerade’s "The 304" campaign—named after the neighbourhood he grew up in—Yamal said: "It's incredible. When I was a kid, I wore Neymar's shirts, Messi's jerseys, all these players, so seeing kids wearing my shirt means that I'm their inspiration, at least in football.

"It's something I never thought would happen so fast: [seeing] those 13-year-old kids in the shirt of a kid who's only four years older than them. It is amazing. Yamal already boasts a European Championship victory with Spain and has received numerous individual honours. However, his loan move is yet to be completed, but it should be announced before the deadline, that is if all the admin and medical sides of the deal have been a success.

The Frenchman could be joined in North London by another player who’s remerged on their radar over the last couple of hours.

Spurs plot late move for attacking star

According to The Guardian, Spurs have targeted a late move for Southampton winger Tyler Dibling before tonight’s 11pm transfer deadline.

The 18-year-old has burst onto the scene this campaign at St Mary’s throughout 2024/25, scoring twice in his first 20 matches throughout his professional career.

Dibling was also said to be of interest to multiple Bundesliga clubs today, but given the fact their window closed at 5pm, it gives Postecoglou a free run at a move for the teenager.

However, it’s previously been reported that the Saints would demand a fee in the region of £55m to part ways with their star talent – an expensive but worthwhile addition for the club.

He would be the perfect immediate and long-term option for the Lilywhites, potentially being a bigger talent than Tel for the Aussie boss in the next couple of months.

Why Dibling would be a bigger talent than Tel for Spurs

This month’s deadline day has been frantic for the Spurs faithful, with deals on them off and on again, as seen with Bayern teenager Tel, who finally looks set to move to the club.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United were all also in the race for his signature, whether that be on loan or permanently – with the Lilywhites his chosen home, albeit until the end of June.

Undoubtedly, the prospect of another attacking addition had given the supporters a reason to be excited considering the recent injury issues in that department, but Dibling could prove to be a better option than the Frenchman in North London.

When comparing the duo’s stats from the current campaign, the Southampton ace has massively outperformed Tel in various key areas, showcasing why he would be a superb immediate and long-term option for Postecoglou.

Dibling, who’s previously been dubbed “one of the best ball carriers” by one analyst, has produced more combined goals and assists to date than Tel, whilst also registering more of his shots on target – highlighting his clinical nature in the final third.

He’s also completed more progressive carries per 90 along with more attempted take-ons, showcasing his desire to take the ball into attacking areas and get past his man at any given opportunity.

Whilst £55m may seem like a huge fee for a youngster who’s only played 20 games in his professional career, but he’s already showcased that he has all of the tools to be a hit in England’s top flight – having the ability to develop further down the line.

Tel may provide a temporary fix to the current injury crisis, but the Southampton ace would be the man to offer the long-term option, already proving that he’s capable of outperforming the Frenchman, showing why he’s capable of being a star for the club under Postecoglou.

Crystal Palace scouts keeping a close eye on £20m gem ahead of the summer

Crystal Palace scouts are keeping an eye on a “freak of nature” midfielder ahead of the summer transfer window opening, according to a former high level scout.

Crystal Palace news and updates

The Eagles suffered a disappointing result at home to Everton on Sunday, but with them only sitting nine points behind eighth place Fulham and having a fifth round FA Cup tie to look forward to, there is still a lot for Palace to play for this season.

As Oliver Glasner will be focusing on the matters on the pitch, there will also be conversations about plans for current Palace players and what they want to do in the summer transfer window. It was reported last week that Glasner is pushing the club to hold contract talks with striker Jean Philippe-Mateta, as he wants them to secure his long-term future at Selhurst Park.

In transfer news, it’s also been reported that Palace are interested in signing SC Freiburg midfielder Merlin Rohl. The 22-year-old is said to have a £10 million price tag, but Palace are not alone in their pursuit, as Newcastle United, Liverpool and Everton are also interested in signing the attacking midfielder.

Rohl is not the only midfielder on Palace’s radar, according to the club’s former scout, Mick Brown, who has told Football Insider that Crystal Palace scouts are keeping an eye on Sunderland midfielder Jobe Bellingham.

Brown, who has worked at top-level player recruitment for over a decade, believes Sunderland will listen to offers for Bellingham, and they will let him go if they get the right price, as several teams keep an eye on him throughout this campaign.

I think Sunderland would let him go if they got a good price for him,” Brown told Football Insider. “Especially if they don’t get promoted this season, they’re going to listen to offers. It feels to me like they’re short of a couple of real top-class players.

“You’ve got the goalkeeper who’s not bad; he’s promising, and then you get Rigg, who’s the same. Then you’ve got Bellingham, and there have been questions about whether he’s good enough to make that step up at this point. Crystal Palace and Tottenham have had scouts watching him this season, so they’ll be two of the teams in the running if he is going to leave.

“So, it’ll be up to them to assess whether he’s ready to make that jump. From a Sunderland point of view, knowing the way the owners want to operate, I think if they get a huge bid for him, then they’ll let him go.”

Bellingham, who has been described as a “freak of nature” by teammate Dan Neil, has scored four goals and recorded three assists in 28 Championship games, as the Black Cats look to finish the season in the play-offs at the very least.

Palace are not unknown for looking into the Championship for their next star player, as they recently brought Adam Wharton to Selhurst Park from Blackburn Rovers, and he has turned into an excellent investment. The Eagles may be willing to do the same again, and it could cost them £20 million to get a deal for Bellingham over the line.
