Panini Tabloid Sticker Pack – World of Lewis discusses Luke Shaw

In a season of strife and turmoil for Manchester United, only a few players ended the season with their head held high.

One of those was Luke Shaw as he turned in his most consistent season for the Red Devils to date and cemented himself as the club’s first choice left back.

Shaw started the season with a goal and went on to make 40 appearances in all competitions.

The World of Lewis, who can be seen in the video above filling out his Panini Tabloid, called Shaw “One of the most consistent players of the season.”

Check out Lewis’s thoughts on Shaw in full in the video above.

Aurier suffers ridiculous injury while on international duty

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur defender Serge Aurier sustained a rather bizarre injury while on international duty with the Ivory Coast, after slamming his fist on a table, per the Daily Mail.

What’s the word?

The Spurs right-back is currently participating in the African Cup of Nations with his country.

But he was not included in the starting XI for the clash with Mali on Monday due to an ankle injury.

Nevertheless, Aurier still managed to hurt his wrist by animatedly slamming his fist on a table at half-time with the score at 0-0, per the aforementioned report.

He was given a splint, the Mail claim, and they quote him as saying afterwards: “We got a little heated, because in the game we were not good. I hit the table and there you go.

“At home, when things go wrong, the parents scream at us. It’s the same thing. We had to have no regrets.”

Aurier’s countrymen went on to win 1-0, with Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha scoring the winner.

A hot-head

This figures.

Anyone who has watched Aurier play will understand that he can be prone to lapses of judgement.

Indeed, he was largely a deputy to Kieran Trippier throughout the 2018/19 season and due to a combination of injury woes and not being selected, he made just eight Premier League appearances.

Aurier’s time at Spurs, though, has largely been characterised by rash fouls and he was even slammed by former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand in the 2017/18 season after giving away a penalty in a Champions League clash with Juventus.

Ferdinand said, per BT Sport via the Mail: “As a defender, I have never really rated Aurier. He’s rash and he’s let his team down far too often.”

No one can be surprised that he hurt himself in perhaps the rashest way possible, then.

Is the Man City and Liverpool duopoly a major problem for the Premier League?

[ad_pod ]

Last May Manchester City and Liverpool finished 26 and 25 points respectively ahead of their nearest rival Chelsea. Between them they lost only five games all season while Spurs – who finished fourth – suffered 13 defeats. Between them they conceded 45 goals while Arsenal – who came fifth – shipped in 51.

It was the widest gap between first and third since the formation of the Premier League. It was the widest gap between second and third too.

So where does this leave us going into a new campaign with the empirical truth that we have two clubs who are presently light years ahead of the rest? Should we be concerned that the foreseeable future heralds only another two-horse race?

For those among us who wish to see a more competitive league fought out in the upper echelon most of the hope should be invested in Tottenham Hotspur, who staged a more valiant effort than anyone else to prevent a duopoly occurring last year and this despite ultimately trailing to Chelsea.

As late in the day as February Maurico Pochettino’s side were still considered in the running for the title and though the wheels came off from that point – losing seven from their remaining 12 fixtures – Spurs’ exhilarating charge to the Champions League final was superfluous proof that the north London giants are capable of doing extraordinary things under their magic Argentinian.

Yet however highly or otherwise Tottenham’s 2018/19 is regarded it was all achieved amidst a period of rootlessness as their stadium build experienced numerous postponements. And due to the exorbitant cost of their new ground doubling from initial projections it was widely expected that they would once again be inactive in the transfer market this summer.

It has been a pleasant surprise then to see them anything but financially hamstrung, thus far strengthening their midfield with the £55m purchase of Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele, while rumours persist over an imminent bid for Real Madrid’s Dani Ceballos and by anyone’s estimation these are additions that will elevate an already robust squad.

We may be at an early juncture but the feeling is that should a high-achieving club – one that has been positively parsimonious in recent years in comparison to their peers – improve in key areas, they could very conceivably close the gap on Manchester City and Liverpool.

To what extent is of course pure conjecture but that isn’t the point of discussion here: what matters is the possibility of a more open, competitive title race playing out before our eyes next term entertaining more than two fan-bases; what matter is an avoidance of last season’s two-pronged assault on the senses that many people – neutrals and the media alike – deemed to be predictable and boring.

For this to occur one of two circumstances must materialise, the first of which is so unlikely as to be fanciful.

Does anybody realistically expect the intimidatingly brilliant creations courtesy of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp to regress in the months ahead? If so may we suggest you peer out the window and await flying pigs.

Which leaves us only with the prospect of one, or ideally more of their inferior rivals making significant gains on their season just gone and – Spurs aside – again expectation is at a minimum.

Manchester United are a club in disarray, with an out-of-depth manager who bizarrely seems to be under the impression that it’s still the 1990’s (how many more times must he say ‘We’re Man United’ as if that means anything these days?) and their two biggest stars intent on leaving Old Trafford.

Clearly in need of an overhaul United’s is a squad unbalanced from so many failed managerial stints in recent times. Most damningly of all is the quantum leap in consistency and results that is required if they are to bridge the sizeable gap between themselves, City and Liverpool.

Last season they eventually decayed a full 32 points behind their dominant neighbours, the same amount of points that separated them from relegation. To even claw that back to a respectable margin this time out will require substantial improvement.

Does the 6th May 2009 ring any bells Chelsea fans? If so, you might want to give the video below a miss…

At Stamford Bridge, meanwhile, they too have sought out the comforting nostalgia of a playing legend installed into the dug-out and it would be wholly unfeasible to expect an inexperienced coach in Frank Lampard to successfully go toe-to-toe with Guardiola and Klopp. The loss of their best player Eden Hazard diminishes Chelsea greatly while their transfer ban is also a serious hindrance to immediate progress.

As for Arsenal a hit-and-miss inaugural season under Unai Emery could have been viewed as a potential springboard to better things now that the Spaniard has assimilated himself in the capital – but with a severely limited transfer budget that can be ruled out.

Can the Gunners accrue more than 70 points by next May? Absolutely. Can they challenge for the title? Absolutely not.

Which in all likelihood leaves us all again with a straight shot-out between Manchester City and Liverpool, gobbling up points relentlessly and taking it in turns at the top while the rest crick their necks looking up.

Is this a problem for the Premier League? Only time –and television viewing figures – will tell.

Spurs could finally have depth they so need after this summer

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Tottenham Hotspur could finally have the depth they need if they pull off their mooted summer transfer business.

Last season, Spurs reached the Champions League final and qualified for the competition via a top-four finish in the Premier League.

That, though, came about in spite of their investment instead of because of it.

For the majority of it, manager Mauricio Pochettino was forced to utilise a small squad.

A total of 16 players made 30 or more appearances for the club, with Christian Eriksen, the attacking midfielder, making 51, more than any other player.

But this summer, the club have already signed Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon to ease the burden on the central midfielders, and are eyeing up two genuinely fantastic attacking midfielders.

Giovani Lo Celso, of Real Betis, is the subject of negotiations, while Juventus star Paulo Dybala is also a target, per sources.

Sources have confirmed that Spurs genuinely believe a deal can be done for the latter in the final fortnight of the transfer window while remaining in talks for the former.

Of course, it remains to be seen if both would turn up to join Eriksen, who has expressed a willingness to leave, but even if he leaves, Spurs will suddenly have options.

Eriksen has always been seen as the go-to man for Pochettino’s playmaker role and that has been borne out in the stats. No other player made over 50 appearances for Spurs last season – Toby Alderweireld made exactly 50.

Yet if they sign one of Lo Celso or Dybala to compete with the Dane, or he leaves and the two arrive, Pochettino will be able to rotate and, most importantly, rest his most influential players.

This has been a downfall at Spurs in recent seasons, with Pochettino regularly picking a starting XI and sticking with it.

It led to tiredness last season, as the club limped over the finish line, losing four of their last five Premier League outings.

In the 2019/20 season, Spurs can head that problem off at the pass by bringing in more bodies.

If Lo Celso and Dybala arrive, Pochettino will have greater options and, one would hope, the ability to keep his players fresh as the all-important run-in looms.

Norwich City: Canaries hit with Alex Tettey injury just two weeks before Liverpool opener

Norwich City have been hit with an injury blow as midfielder Alex Tettey has suffered a setback in his bid to come back from a calf injury.

[ad_pod ]

Daniel Farke revealed the news at a press conference and revealed there was ‘a little blood’ in the calf of the Norwegian winger.

He said: “Alex had a little setback in the past week. A small calf injury. We had just planned he would be out for seven to 10 days but there is still some blood in the calf.”

“We have to get that out and we either use some traditional methods or maybe a small surgery. That is a decision to make in the next day or two. It is very rare with this injury you have to do that. It is a shame for Alex. He was looking sharp and unbelievably fit at this level. Let’s see how it develops.” (Source: Eastern Daily Press)

Tettey played a huge part for the Norfolk club last season, featuring 30 times as the club won promotion back to the Premier League. His injury leaves Norwich City with just two out-and-out defensive midfielders in the squad, which could prove problematic especially with a hard start to the season for the club.

The Norwegian was with the Canaries when they were last in the Premier League and has made 71 appearances in English football’s top flight.

An injury setback is devastating for manager Farke, especially after he revealed that the club wasn’t looking to add to their squad ahead of the transfer window closing next Thursday. Depending on the severity of the setback, Norwich may have to dip back into the market to sign another midfielder.

As mentioned above, Tettey has Premier League experience, making the second-most appearances of any player at Norwich City having made 71 appearances, behind goalkeeper Tim Krul (157).

With Norwich expecting to battle relegation next season the experience will be key. To potentially lose Tettey for the beginning of the season is a hammer blow for the club, especially with such a difficult start to the season.

Manchester United fans react as Eric Bailly suffers new injury against Tottenham

[ad_pod ]

The injury curse strikes again. Since arriving from Villareal in a £30m deal back in the summer of 2016, Eric Bailly has had some rather wretched luck with injuries.

The Ivory Coast international has been beset with both short-term and long-term setbacks throughout his United career, and often at the worst possible times.

Now, after going down with an injury within just ten minutes of coming on a substitute against Tottenham in pre-season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Bailly’s problem didn’t look too great.

After hearing the news of the latest potential setback suffered by the 25-year-old, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the matter and many were seemingly frustrated.

Supporters of the Manchester side insisted that now was the time for Bailly to be let go from the club and felt that his injury record meant he simply couldn’t sustain being a first-team regular.

Some suggested that Bailly’s injury gave United even more reason to go out and sign a centre-back in the summer transfer window and hoped that it would lead them to finally getting Harry Maguire.

Manchester United fans slam Romelu Lukaku after the striker leaks training data

[ad_pod ]

Some Manchester United fans have taken to Twitter to slam Romelu Lukaku after the striker leaked exclusive training data.

The Belgium international’s tweet – which has since been deleted – showed him second only to Diogo Dalot with a max speed of 36.25kph in a pre-season test, as he issued a response to those online who had been calling him slow.

However, perhaps unintentionally, the former Everton man also revealed those who finished at the wrong end of the test, such as Luke Shaw, Scott McTominay and Juan Mata – Mata and Shaw even responded to the incident themselves on Twitter.

Lukaku – who has 42 goals for United – could still leave the club for Juventus as a deal involving himself and Paulo Dybala drags on, but his latest act doesn’t appear to have gone down too well with a section of the Red Devils supporters.

Let’s take a look at how the United fans on Twitter responded to Lukaku’s leak…

Wolves fans furious with VAR following goalless draw at Leicester

[ad_pod ]

On the face of it, Wolves’ Premier League opener against Leicester was far from a thrilling encounter with both sides battling out a 0-0 stalemate.

But the game will be looked back on for one moment of controversy after the video assistant referee ruled out a 53rd minute Leander Dendoncker strike after it appeared to hit the arm of teammate Willy Boly seconds earlier.

A new law brought into the game for this season state that any goal scored or assisted through the use of the hand or the arm will be disallowed, even if it was an accident.

A number of fans took to Twitter to blast the decision…

One supporter said they didn’t like VAR one bit brandishing it ‘unnatural’ with reference to being one millimetre offside or an accidental handball as in this case.

Others called it ‘farcical’ and ‘ridiculous’ with one fan going as far as saying it has destroyed football.

Some members of the Molineux crowd claimed the team were robbed as a result whilst one supporter took a swipe at those in control of VAR on Sunday, calling them ‘corrupt’.

Wolves fans swoon over Joao Moutinho after midfielder reaches 50 appearances for the club

[ad_pod ]

On Monday night, Wolves fought out their second successive draw of the Premier League season as they welcomed Manchester United to Molineux.

Nuno Santo needed heroics from a pair of his fellow countrymen as Ruben Neves thumped home a long-range screamer to level things before Rui Patricio stepped up to save Paul Pogba’s second-half penalty.

The night also marked a special occasion for a fourth Portuguese native with Joao Moutinho recording his 50th appearance in the old gold shirt, having joined the club last summer from Monaco in a £5m deal.

The 32-year-old featured in every single Premier League game last season, scoring one goal and assisting eight more, as per WhoScored.

His playmaking ability has already continued into this campaign after providing the assist to Neves’ equaliser on Monday.

A number of fans took to social media to share their thoughts on Moutinho reaching the 50 game milestone.

One supporter asked the club to give him a new contract, whilst a range of superlatives were used to describe his time at Molineux including ‘special’ and ‘class’.

Another claimed he was the best player to ever play for Wolves, with one calling him a ‘complete player’.

Nottingham Forest fans buzzing about Joao Carvalho’s imminent return

[ad_pod ]

Nottingham Forest face Derby County in one of the fiercest rivalries in English football on Tuesday night as the two sides go head-to-head in the Carabao Cup.

The Reds currently have their hands on the Brian Clough Trophy after a 1-0 victory at the City Ground back in February this year, so there’s more than just a place in the next round at stake.

And it appears that fans’ excitement has been given a monumental boost ahead of the game, as Joao Carvalho has been spotted back in training, seemingly on the brink of returning to action.

The 22-year-old ace is the club’s record transfer at £13.2m and has been absent for all five Championship games this campaign having picked up an ankle injury during pre-season.

In the Championship last term, the Portuguese midfielder netted four goals and also laid on eight assists, per Whoscored – the latter number was only bettered in his side by Joe Lolley (11).

Upon seeing Carvalho’s appearance at training, many fans reacted on Twitter.

One supporter compared the midfielder’s potential partnership with Rafa Mir to that of yesteryear with Stan Collymore and Bryan Roy, who as a pair became a lethal duo in the mid-to-late 90s.

Another member of the Forest faithful labelled him a ‘little magician’ whilst another added an image to suggest that the Reds are on their way to the Premier League.
