Reguilon wants Spain return l

According to a report by El Gol Digital, Tottenham summer signing Sergio Reguilon wishes to return to Spain after falling into an ‘unstable project’ in north London, coming as a potential blow for manager Jose Mourinho and the Lilywhites.

Tottenham dealt potential Reguilon blow

Reguilon has arguably been impressive since joining from Real Madrid in 2020, with a report from Football Insider at the back end of last year describing him as ‘phenomenal’ in training.

He has also been a regular for Mourinho since signing at Hotspur Way, starting 16 Premier League matches whilst grabbing three assists in that time (WhoScored). He is in the top four Spurs performers for both tackles and interceptions per game over the course of the season (WhoScored).

Providing an update on Reguilon’s future amid the presence of a buy-back Real Madrid clause, El Gol Digital have provided a potentially alarming claim.

Transfer Tavern take

The Spanish outlet stated that he now wishes to return to Spain, preferably with his former club Sevilla, as the 24-year-old emerges as a top target for Los Palanganas at left-back.

A potential blow in Spurs’ wishes to keep Reguilon, it is stated by El Gol Digital that he wants to go back to his homeland amid this interest, but only time will tell what comes of the report.

One of only two left-back options, it’s safe to say that Mourinho will not want to lose the Spaniard after a solid debut season.

Phil Hay’s Bielsa update will delight Leeds fans

Leeds United are enjoying a strong run of form in their returning Premier League campaign. Thanks to numerous solid performances and Marcelo Bielsa’s steady hand on the throttle, the Whites are in a more than respectable 10th place in the table, one point ahead of upcoming opposition Arsenal.

Victor Orta and co didn’t utilise their option to splurge in the January transfer window, but could have some surprises up their sleeve leading into the summer. The future of Jack Harrison still remains unknown, but Leeds have the opportunity to bring him to Elland Road permanently for a fee of £10million.

Phil Hay recently confirmed that the club officials are keen on activating this clause, but if something goes wrong with the deal, Harrison will depart the club in the summer upon the expiry of his loan contract.

This is very similar for the manager himself. Bielsa is into the last six months of his deal with Leeds and no talks as of yet have emerged regarding an extension. However, Hay has one again come up with the goods and has delivered some very telling comments regarding Bielsa’s future.

In the latest episode of The Phil Hay Show, he discusses the Argentine and his role at the club. The Athletic reporter revealed that Bielsa is happy where he is, despite only penning a one-year deal back in September.

For fans, this will be a delightful piece of news. The 65-year-old is hugely respected by the Leeds fanbase and is held in high regard after he took them back to the Premier League following 16 long years away. Whites supporters will not want to see their boss go anywhere any time soon.

Even Andrea Radrizzani recently expressed his desire to see Bielsa stay at the club. He clearly fits the club very well and his results so far have been admirable for a side fresh up from the Championship. The fans, players and club officials would no doubt be elated if Bielsa decided to commit his future to Leeds.

Spurs legend backs top four finish

Tottenham Hotspur can still finish in the top four of the Premier League, according to Spurs legend Gary Mabbutt in an exclusive interview with Football FanCast.

The former captain of the north London club spoke exclusively to Football FanCast earlier this week.

And he believes that the congested and tight nature of the Premier League table means that the club retain every chance of qualifying for the Champions League through their league position.

They have been in relatively poor form in recent weeks, with Jose Mourinho’s side slipping as low as ninth at one point.

Their 4-0 win over Burnley at the weekend, though, moved Spurs eighth, six points behind fourth-placed West Ham United with a game in hand.

And Mabbutt insists that Spurs simply need to string together a run of results in order to be back in contention.

Mourinho’s men play relegation-threatened Fulham on Thursday, before taking on Crystal Palace on Sunday and then playing Arsenal the weekend following. The north London derby comes after a home clash with Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League.

And Mabbutt remains confident that the club can end the season strongly.

He said: “So Spurs dropping two or three results or whatever, here and there. We’ve got, in my own opinion, four or five games, coming up, and those games are all winnable.

“If we suddenly get any team in the top 10 that gets three or four wins on the trot, that’d be them back up in the top four. That’s how it is.”

Spurs also have the potential of qualifying for the Champions League via the Europa League, though they would need to win the competition to do so.

Beating Zagreb, of course, would move them into the quarter-finals of the competition.

Scott Hogan’s proving Aston Villa right

When Aston Villa signed Scott Hogan for a then Championship record of £15m in January 2017, the club would no doubt have expected the striker to deliver on his money’s worth.

Speaking after his signing, then Villa boss Steve Bruce declared: “He has got that hunger in his belly. He’ll give us something that’s been lacking.”

Sadly for Hogan and the club, he was nothing short of a disaster in his time at Villa Park. In total, he managed just ten goals in 61 games, whilst he spent the previous couple of campaigns on loan at Sheffield United, Stoke and then rivals Birmingham.

After getting into a bit of form for the Blues – he bagged seven goals in 17 games last season – the club decided to make his loan move from Villa into something more permanent.

And if Villa have been watching Hogan’s season thus far, then they will be absolutely laughing all the way to the bank.

The 28-year-old has struggled immensely to rediscover the kind of form that convinced Birmingham to

bring him in last summer, managing a measly two goals in 16 games in all competitions.

That hasn’t been down to him making substitute appearances either, with 14 of those matches actually seeing him start from the off. He’s averaged less than a shot per game this campaign in the Championship, evidence of a striker who is woefully out of form and can’t find himself in the positions to test the goalkeeper.

As per Whoscored, his average match rating this season of 6.31 actually ranks him 20th among all Birmingham City players, with only four players below him. Hogan has been shocking virtually all season, and the man with eight caps for the Republic of Ireland looks nothing like the player that convinced Villa to part big money with to sign.

Johan Lange played an absolute blinder by getting rid of him last summer.

Meanwhile, Villa must unleash this academy starlet in the Premier League…

Fernandinho shone in Manchester City’s 3-0 win vs Marseille

Manchester City picked up a 3-0 win against Marseille in the Champions League on Wednesday night and whilst it might be the City attackers who pick up the plaudits, the performance of Fernandinho should not go unnoticed.

Goals from Ferran Torres, Sergio Aguero and and own goal from Alvaro Gonzalez sealed a comfortable win for Pep Guardiola’s side at the Etihad in what was their final group stage game of the 2020/21 Champions League campaign.

As the game was something of a dead rubber for the Citizens, as they had already secured top spot in Group C, it was no surprise to see 35-year-old Fernandinho handed a rare start by Guardiola.

The Brazilian, who has now made 324 appearances for Manchester City in his career, showed no signs of his age in the win, as he produced a superb display.

As per SofaScore, the defensive midfielder picked up a strong 7.4 rating for his display against Andre Villas-Boas’ side, which was only bettered by Aymeric Laporte, Ilkay Gundogan and Phil Foden.

Fernandinho enjoyed 107 touches of the ball during the 90 minutes, demonstrating the key influence he can still have in this Manchester City side, and he was also extremely effective with his passing, with 87/95 of his attempted passes finding a City teammate.

The experienced midfielder only lost possession on nine occasions during the game, whilst five out of six of his long balls were accurate, emphasising that the quality of his passing shows no signs of dropping.

He also showed his class by making three tackles, whilst he was dribbled past on just two occasions, suggesting that despite his age, he still has the quality to play in this Manchester City side.

Unfortunately for fans, with Fernandinho’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, they may not have much longer watching the Brazilian in a City shirt, however, this display emphasises that he can still perform at the highest level when relied upon by Guardiola.

Newcastle ace Sean Longstaff proved his worth to Steve Bruce in Everton win

After making his return from injury on Sunday afternoon, Sean Longstaff showed exactly why he simply has to be one of the first names on the team-sheet for Newcastle.

It was only just a couple of months ago that Steve Bruce laid down the gauntlet to his midfielder, insisting that he’s still got some way to go to recapture his best form.

He said: “Sean is in the last two years of his contract – we all know what capabilities he’s got he’s got to show it more often and more regularly. He’s got a lot of work to do, but he’s got healthy competition around him.”

But with his return to fitness, and Jonjo Shelvey being ruled out with injury, Longstaff had his opportunity to impress against Everton. And he didn’t disappoint in their Premier League clash.

Whilst Callum Wilson was the Magpies’ match-winner with two goals to secure all three points at St James’ Park, it was Longstaff’s midfield display that really set the tone for Bruce’s side.

As per Sofascore, his 7.3 match rating was the joint-second highest of any Newcastle player, only behind Wilson. And when you look at the underlying numbers behind his performance, it’s no surprise to see why.

Defensively, he stuck to his task well, making two tackles, one clearance and winning three duels. But it was his work on the ball that really caught the eye for Newcastle.

He boasted an impressive 88% pass accuracy, whilst he was also one of their most creative forces on the day as well, providing a team-high two key passes.

Not to mention the fact that he also completed three of his four attempted crosses, and found the mark with five of his seven long balls. That all led to The Chronicle journalist, Mark Douglas, to rave that Longstaff was enjoying his “best game for a while” on Twitter.

With Shelvey out of action for the foreseeable future, Longstaff surely has to keep his place in the starting line-up for the weeks ahead.

Jack Wilshere’s release would be easier to swallow if Loftus-Cheek came in

West Ham United are all over the place at the moment.

The Hammers’ transfer business has been less than inspiring, and after two defeats in their opening two matches, something has to change sooner rather than later.

Fortunately, the London club are being linked with some exciting moves, with reports claiming that they’re interested in loaning Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

This move would certainly bolster the Hammers’ midfield as the England international would add some much-needed creativity to what has turned into a rather flat XI.

However, West Ham do already have a player in this mould, in the shape of Jack Wilshere.

There are a lot of parallels to be drawn between Wilshere and Loftus-Cheek, with the pair being young creative English midfielders who have dazzled with their ball control and passing ability.

Unfortunately, Wilshere’s West Ham career may be coming to an end, with reports earlier this month claiming that the club are ready to terminate his £100k a week contract in order to cut some costs.

Watch West Ham United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

We’ve already argued that paying the 28-year-old £5.2m for the rest of the year is a risk worth taking for the club due to the fact that it’d be a tough task to find a player that talented for such a price, but in Loftus-Cheek they may have found that man.

If the Chelsea man is brought in for the season it would mitigate a lot of the risk attached to releasing Wilshere, as they will have a man who is amongst the England reckoning when he is fit and at his best.

Will it still be painful for West Ham fans if Wilshere goes on to excel elsewhere? Of course it will be, but if Loftus-Cheek performs how we know he can, that pain will be eased.
