Sri Lanka 'A' gain upper hand at Moratuwa

India ‘A’ bowlers justified their captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar’s decision to bowl first in the second ‘Test’ against Sri Lanka A at the De Zoysa Stadium, Moratuwa on Thursday. But, by the end of the second day, the visiting side’s top-order had let the team down somewhat, ending on 55 for four. The first day of the match being washed out, the second day saw Sri Lanka ‘A’, powered by hard-hitting opener Avishka Gunawardene, make a strong start. Quiet easily the dominant partner, Gunawardene ensured that his team put up 53 runs before fellow-opener Geral Daniel (12) became the first wicket to fall on the day.Sri Lanka ‘A’ number three Mohamed Nawaz, who replaced Daniel, continued his good batting form. Fresh from an unbeaten 80-odd in the second innings of the first ‘Test’ between the two sides, Nawaz started to middle the ball with heartening confidence. Even the dismissals of Gunawardene (51 off 69 balls) and captain Tillakaratne Dilshan (7, in the space of 17 runs failed to ruffle him. With number five Chamara Silva proving an able ally, Nawaz began to stitch together a partnership that regained the intiative for the home team. The duo put on 121 runs before Nawaz (87) offered a return catch to Rohan Gavaskar. Nawaz’s innings had lasted 148 balls and contained 12 fours and one six.Once he departed, the Sri Lankan innings fell apart. Next man Muthumudalige Pushpakumara was out soon after, for just five. Soon, Silva too followed after a measured 65 off 103 balls. The remainder of the tail proved to be fairly brittle. Only KS Lokuarachchi provided any semblance of a resistance scoring 29 off 45 balls before falling to L Balaji. Balaji ended with four wickets for 47, the most successful of the seven bowlers used.India ‘A’ lost their first wicket, that of the in-form Gautam Gambhir, with just 19 on the board. Dulip Liyanage, who scalped Gambhir, snapped up two more in quick succession, removing Sridharan Sriram and Kanitkar. Pulasthi Gunaratne too got into the act, getting rid of Gavaskar. At the close of play, Akash Chopra at the top of the order was unbeaten on 37 off 62 balls. He was accompanied by Jai P Yadav, who had made six. India ‘A’ were precariously perched at 55 for four, and it will take some good batting from this pair, and the batsmen to follow, to ensure that the visitors do not lose this match.

Lukaku publicly snubs Man City

Romelu Lukaku has commented on a potential transfer to Manchester City this summer, during a Q&A on his Twitter account.

What’s the talk?

Inter forward Lukaku has reaffirmed his commitment to the Italian giants and snubbed a potential move to Manchester City at the same time. In a Q&A on his personal Twitter account, Lukaku responded to Trevor Sinclair asking him if he wanted to join City by saying “I am happy at Inter”.

Ahead of the summer transfer window, Calcio Mercato claimed that Manchester City and Barcelona are both interested in signing Lukaku from Inter. The Italian side, however, are desperate to keep their top goalscorer after winning the Serie A.

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho hailed the phenomenal attacker as a player he fully trusts to do a job on the pitch. He told The Mirror:

“He is a guy you can trust, his attitude is phenomenal.”

Pep will be gutted

Txiki Begiristain has been dealt a blow with this news and Pep Guardiola will be gutted as it means that Lukaku will likely not be joining Man City this summer. Lukaku publicly rejecting the idea of signing for City will surely force Txiki to cross his name off of his list of transfer targets this summer, which is a shame as the Belgian international could have been a terrific addition. Irrespective of his United connections, Lukaku could have been a player that City fans would have loved at The Etihad.

Lukaku is a proven, top-quality, centre-forward. The 28-year-old scored an incredible 113 goals in 252 Premier League appearances, playing for West Brom, Everton and Manchester United in the Premier League. He then moved to Inter in 2019, where he has found the back of the net 64 times in 95 games in all competitions for the Italian giants. This shows that he is a consistent goalscorer who can provide goals at an excellent rate at the top level.

The £200k-per-week beast could, therefore, have been a brilliant signing for City to bolster their attacking options after the departure of Sergio Aguero on a free transfer. Guardiola would have had a reliable, trustworthy, centre-forward who he could count on to find the back of the net consistently, which is why his commitment to Inter will leave the City boss gutted this week.

Hooper disappointed with team's perfomance

West Indies captain Carl Hooper said he was very disappointed with theresult yesterday as the West Indies fell to defeat by 37 runs in thesecond Cable & Wireless Test against India at the Queen’s Park Oval,Trinidad

Ezra Stuart24-Apr-2002West Indies captain Carl Hooper said he was very disappointed with theresult yesterday as the West Indies fell to defeat by 37 runs in thesecond Cable & Wireless Test against India at the Queen’s Park Oval,Trinidad.I think coming into the last day here, we really fancied our chancesand it was disappointing the way we sort of ended up, 30-odd runsshort, Hooper told reporters after the match.Set a challenging 313 runs for victory, the Windies fell for 275,digging their own grave with most of the batsmen falling to falsestrokes rather than brilliant deliveries from the visitors. The captain said that at no stage did he give up on the West Indiesgetting the runs needed for victory.Right to the very last end, I thought that we had a chance. Thirtyodd runs is not a lot runs but you needed somebody. Shiv [Chanderpaul]maybe needed to take a few more chances but that’s the game, Hoopernoted.Chanderpaul remained 67 not out as wickets fell all around him.I thought from the outset they would try to make runs difficult tocome by and that’s what they did. They bowled straight and locked upboth the offside and onside, He said. The thing to do, I suppose is to capitalise on the bad balls and keepthe scoreboard ticking with the singles. I think it was a bitunfortunate we lost Brian [Lara] and then almost immediately after, myself. That set us back a whole lot and obviously put the pressure on peoplelike Chris Gayle, who I thought played well and ShivnarineChanderpaul, Hooper said.Despite losing his second consecutive Test at the venue after the lossto South Africa last year, Hooper said he could find no fault with thepitch. We had the knowledgeable experts predicting how it was going to playand so on but I thought we had a belter of a Test wicket, Hooperdeclared.Coach Roger Harper also expressed disappointment with losing the Testand going down 1-0 in the five-match series. This is very disappointing. We had a similar situation here againstSouth Africa last year and most members of the team were here and weshould have learnt from that experience and unfortunately we came upshort, Harper said.I think, you can’t fault the effort. Everyone fought hard but I thinkwe need to play a little smarter, added Harper. He noted the batsmen’s failure to carry on for bigger scorescontributed to the Windies’ inadequate totals of 245 and 275 in theTest. In Guyana, we managed to put a very good total on the board. One ofthe things we talked about there was that batsmen that got in, got tostart carrying on. I think here we didn’t see that, Harper noted. He also zeroed in on the West Indies’ bowling in the first session onthe opening day after India were sent in to bat.I thought we definitely could’ve bowled a lot better in that firstsession. Had we done that, it may have meant India making 40, 50 less,Harper conceded.

Leeds confirm exciting boardroom changes

Leeds United have confirmed that some exciting changes have been made at boardroom level, and it’s news which should have their fans absolutely buzzing.

What’s the story?

An official club statement posted on leedsunited.com read: “Exciting board changes. Leeds United has today revealed changes to its Board of Directors as the club looks ahead to a bright future.

“The first new face on the board is Australian Peter Lowy. Peter is currently the Principle of the Lowy Family Group private investment business and was formerly the CEO of the hugely successful Westfield Group. Lowy is a lifelong Leeds United supporter who brings over 30 years of business experience with him.

“Peter is joined by Aser Ventures Chief Executive Officer Massimo Marinelli who has played a pivotal role in generating investment into the club during Andrea’s ownership, including the increased involvement of the 49 Enterprises earlier this year.

“Finally, former Fiorentina CEO Sandro Mencucci will take a place on the new-look board having spent 17 years at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. Massimo, Sandro and Peter join Leeds United Chairman Andrea Radrizzani, Vice Chairman Paraag Marathe and CEO Angus Kinnear, to complete the Board of Directors.”

Leeds fans should be buzzing

Given the debacle of the European Super League involving the Premier League’s proverbial ‘big six’, and the fan fallout arising from that, news of some exciting changes at boardroom level for Leeds is welcome.

The big plus point for the club and its fans is the arrival of Peter Lowy, who is claimed to be a “lifelong” supporter of the club.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Leeds transfer rumours and news!”]

Fan representation at board level has been a much-discussed topic in recent days and weeks since the ESL collapsed, and the likes of Liverpool and Spurs have either made or mooted changes to that effect.

Having a personal, Leeds-aligned touch to the club’s hierarchy is another encouraging move to ensure the Whites’ future.

The news from Thorp Arch should have fans buzzing, knowing that the club will likely be in even safer hands now that parties with their best interests at heart are involved at boardroom level.

Meanwhile, Leeds must land this “explosive” Premier League star…

Matabeleland v CFX Academy, Day 2 Report

MATABELELAND v CFX ACADEMYAt Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo; 30, 31 March, 1 April 2001.Day 2 report, by John WardClose of play score: CFX Academy 250; Matabeleland 457/6 (Strydom 6*, Mahachi 1*).The second day’s play between Matabeleland and the CFX Academy was dominated by a massive 267-run partnership for the fifth wicket between national captain Heath Streak (119) and upcoming all-rounder Mluleki Nkala (168). They enabled the home team to finish 207 runs ahead of the Academy on first innings and in a good position to force victory on the third and final day.Matabeleland continued from their overnight score of 50 for one in reply to the Academy total of 320, with Mark Vermeulen talking on the role of aggressor while Ryan King was happy to sit in his shadow and keep his end up. Vermeulen appeared to be heading for a century when he was adjudged lbw to off-spinner Barney Rogers for 77 and dragged himself laboriously off the field rubbing the edge of his bat. With the Academy using their spinners for most of the morning session, Mecury Kenny faced 38 deliveries in 25 minutes, probably some sort of record in modern cricket, helping himself to 13 runs off some of the wilder ones before being surprised and bowled by a faster ball from Sean Ervine.King reached a marathon fifty just before lunch, but in trying to speed up after the break skied a catch to midwicket off left-arm spinner Ian Coulson. With Heath Streak joining him at the wicket, Mluleki Nkala began to exhibit his strokes, taking severe toll of the spinners and then driving the pace bowlers confidently. Very soon the aggressive pair had wrested any initiative the Academy had as they confidently took their team into the lead.Streak followed Nkala to fifty just before tea, by which time Nkala was anticipating his maiden first-class century and Matabeleland a lead large enough for them to expect victory on the final day. The Academy were beginning to wilt in the field as the sun shone and they saw their hopes ebbing away. After tea Nkala moved cautiously through the nineties before reaching three figures, which came off 186 balls. It took them both a while to regain the momentum afterwards, but then came a display of big hitting, with some huge sixes to be appreciated by the 58 spectators. Streak brought up his century with a six and the slaughter continued as the Academy fielders disappointed. Their eventual partnership added 267, just ten runs short of the all-time Zimbabwe fifth-wicket record (277 unbeaten by Murray Goodwin and Andy Flower in a Test match against Pakistan on this ground in 1997/98), before a tiring Streak lifted Lewis to long-off to depart for 119.The declaration did not come and the Academy were made to regret five dropped catches during the Matabeleland innings. Both they and Nkala appeared on the point of exhaustion during the final half-hour, and the latter was finally bowled by Lewis, hitting across the line, for 168. The Academy commendably bowled 117 overs in the day, 12 more than the minimum requirement.

Lord's slope is not the only trap at HQ for new boys

Is summer here

Stephen Fleming09-May-2001Is summer here? I’m not going to harp on about the weather every time I write but this last week has seen a change in the climate – it’s now dry!The dry weather has enabled some cricket to be played and we started our one-day campaign off with a last ball win at Lord’s. It was a reduced over match and we did well defending our score of 146 in 31 overs. That’s not the only game we have played with this week’s schedule being pretty hectic and an indication of what lies ahead. We have had two double-headers with a day off in between. Mix a fair bit of travel with that and you being to understand why they call it a grind. After our first win we have had mixed results wining two and losing two. The results in some way reflect my batting which has also been a mixed bag. It’s taking time to adjust to the pace and movement of the early season wickets. It hasn’t helped that most practice has been indoors which is a markedly different surface to what we get outside. The other thing I have to get used to is batting on the slope at Lord’s. Ironically, the show piece ground of world cricket is not at all flat. In fact, it has a very obvious slope that does affect movement of the ball.I’ve nicked twice now with the ball moving away down the hill and it’s something I will need to be aware of as the season progresses. There are many features around Lord’s that make the place so special, the sloped playing surface, the Long Room, the art collection and, of course, a Lord’s lunch! As an international player you only get to experience a Lord’s lunch for one week during a tour that only occurs every four years. So with this in mind I’ve just had 12 years worth in the short time I’ve been here. The lunch room is actually closer to the visitors’ change room which means a small walk down the corridors to get your share. It does mean you get the chance to walk a little lunch off on your return. You have a menu to choose from and the food ranges from the rack of lamb through to scampi (seafood dish). It’s served by a number of the kitchen staff who seem to constantly be on duty. It’s what follows that does the damage and that is dessert of the highest quality. The house special being hot treacle pudding with custard and ice cream.During the wet start there wasn’t a problem although the physio placing the cycling machines in the changing room sent a strong message. Now that we are underway some serious discipline must be shown, that is unless it’s a fielding day! One thing is for sure, if we’re always tempted being the home side, imagine what the visitors do. All I can say is Bon Appetite!

Newcastle interested in Vitesse’s Danilho Doekhi

Newcastle could acquire a dream upgrade on Fabian Schar by signing Vitesse starlet Danilho Doekhi.

What’s the story?

The Magpies have endured another difficult season in the Premier League defensively, conceding 56 goals in their 34 games thus far – only Southampton, and the bottom two sides West Brom and Sheffield United have let in more.

Now, Dutch publication De Telegraaf claim that Steve Bruce’s side are keen on reinforcing the centre of defence this summer, and are eyeing up a potential move for 22-year-old Doekhi.

The report adds that the centre-back has just one year left on his contract with Vitesse, and that the Eredivisie side will be under pressure to sell him unless he signs an extension at the club.

Upgrade on Fabian Schar

After getting himself sent off after coming on as a substitute against Arsenal, Fabian Schar pretty much underlined the problems the Magpies have faced at the back this season – some poor, reckless individual mistakes, and collectively disorganised too (the fact only three sides have conceded more than them in the Premier League is evidence of that).

But in Doekhi, Bruce could find someone who is as solid as a rock, and has got the defensive discipline that they desperately need at the back.

Vitesse manager Thomas Letsch dubbed him “one of the best defenders” in the league, and waxed lyrical about the kind of progress he has made at the club, saying: “Danilho is a class player, a great player, for us. He already played fantastic last year and this season he has performed every game at the highest level. Danilho makes almost no mistakes and is an absolute team player, a very calm player. Although he can be emotional, but he has developed in that area as well.”

And, when you compare Doekhi’s stats to Schar’s this season, then you can see why the Magpies are very interested in signing him this summer.

As per Whoscored, the 6 foot 3 Dutchman averages far more tackles and interceptions per game than Schar, and commits less fouls and gets dribbled past far few times than the Newcastle man too.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/newcastle-steve-bruce-premier-league-transfer-gossip-rumours-news-st-james-park-joelinton-shelvey-max-aarons” title=”Read the latest Newcastle transfer rumours and news!”]

That’s not to mention the 22-year-old is also superior when it comes to his work on the ball, which has always been lauded as one of Schar’s biggest strengths. Doekhi averages more passes and at a better accuracy compared to the Swiss ace, and appears to be the kind of ball-playing centre-back who should fit in well in the modern game.

Doekhi is just stronger across the board compared to Schar, and given that he “makes almost no mistakes” too, appears like the sort of central defender Newcastle need.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are eyeing a summer move for this Championship star…

Bent expects Everton to axe Tosun

Marcus Bent has exclusively told Football FanCast that he expects Everton striker Cenk Tosun to be sold this summer.

Tosun arrived in a £27million deal more than three years ago, and was initially signed as Romelu Lukaku’s replacement.

But he’s never quite been first-choice at Goodison Park, although his time on Merseyside has been overshadowed by an ACL injury sustained whilst on loan at Crystal Palace which saw him spend eight months on the sidelines.

The £60,000-a-week striker is currently on loan back in his native Turkey with Galatasaray, and has scored three times and added one assist in less than 200 minutes of Super Lig action since his move in January.

However, with just 14 months remaining on his current deal, Bent expects his former side to cash-in on the Turkish international.

He told Football FanCast:

“He picked up an injury, and he keeps picking up injuries, so he’s another one they probably want to get out the door.

“For the future of the club and the future of the player they probably come to a decision where they probably know they’re going to move now and are probably talking to their agents, the board and the club.”
