Africa Cheated? – Pull the other one, it’s got Suarez on.

As the dust began to settle in Johannesburg last night after a stupendously dramatic quarter final encounter between Ghana and Uruguay, a vitriolic opinion began to emerge from betwixt the cloud of genuine sympathy and endearment and cringingly embarrassing bias (I’m looking at you iTV) for a welcoming and deserving continent – Africa was robbed.

Apparently, the one feeling all true warm-hearted non-reptilian individuals were supposed to feel was indignation. Luis Suarez diabolically cheated the plucky Ghanaian heroes out of a semi final place they had righteously earned. By punching away a clearly goal bound headed effort from a free kick in the last minute, Suarez unfairly altered the inevitable course of the game through a sheer, brazen act of gamesmanship. The resulting penalty and sending off wasn’t acceptable recompense for a goal clearing punch. A penalty doesn’t (and didn’t) substitute adequately for a certain goal. Already last night people were calling for penalty goals to be given in such circumstances a la Rugby, to prevent such injustices ever happening again. It just wasn’t fair. They was robbed. Suarez should pay the filthy swine.

Except this is all rubbish really. Yes Suarez prevented Uruguay definitely going out by illegally preventing the goal, but his action was penalized, and he was punished. There was no unnoticed action here. There was no deceiving the officials. Everything that happened was dealt with how it should have been, and always has. In fact if we’re talking about injustices, the free kick that lead to the goal bound header in the first place was never a just one to begin with AND there were two Ghanaian players offside from the flick on anyway. How far back should we be going to damn injustices? One minute or two? And how selective should we be? Should it only apply to the teams we’re rooting for? Give over. Uruguay weren’t given the chance to amend these bad calls as Ghana were. So who actually got the rawer deal here? In truth you could quite easily claim it was just as fair in the scheme of things for the penalty to have been missed.

The shamefully partisan commentators on iTV had even announced quite ironically that it would be hugely controversial should Ghana score from the free kick they were awarded when one of their players tripped over himself. But low and behold, a full minute later, all that was forgotten in haze of even greater controversy.

The world is understandably getting carried away with it’s newfound love and good will for Africa, but getting carried away it never the less is. I’d been in South Africa from the beginning of the tournament until last Friday, and I’d been staying – as chance would have it – in the same bizarre casino hotel thingy-ma-gig as the Ghanaian team. No non-African wanted Ghana to prevail last night more than me, I can assure you, but what Luis Suarez did was not a heinous unjustifiable act that needs new rules to stamp out. It’s merely what many players would’ve done in such desperate circumstances and what many have. And he was caught. The fault for defeat – unfortunately, and tragically for all his bravery – lies with Asamoah Gyan for failing to convert the resulting awarded penalty. Gyan shouldn’t be blamed of course – the man has done more than almost any other player in getting Ghana where they were – but neither, particularly, should Suarez.

Imagine if Suarez had been English, or even Ghanaian. His “sacrifice” would most likely have been lauded, as it was by Manchester United fans when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scythed down Robert Lee in the penultimate game of the 1997/98 season. In that instance, United needed to avoid defeat and Lee was clear through on goal. Solskjaer was applauded off the pitch – as he likely would have been at any home ground – and relayed simply to his teammates; “I had to do it”. Was it the most noble of actions? No, of course not, but he was simply doing all he felt he could for his team to keep them in it. As every goalkeeper whose ever brought down a player who’s rounded him for an empty net has done. It’s called a professional foul. Are they vilified? Are there automatic penalty goals proposed in that almost weekly scenario? No. Put your handbags and pitchforks away people, there’s nothing to see here but brilliant drama.

Solskjaer  – and the endless plethora of rounded goalkeepers and last men – had far more time to think about their actions than Suarez, whose instinctive volleyball snap must have occurred to him a mere millisecond before he did it. He would also have known he’d face a red card, and probably not play in the tournament again, but while letting the ball float past him would’ve caused the same outcome for he, it allowed his teammates to progress. He took one for the team, and if it had’ve been John “Lion Heart” Terry performing such “bravery” he’d likely be praised by the rag tops – rightly or wrongly (probably wrongly) – for his epic sacrifice.

It’s football, it happens, and it’ll happen again, and what happened after it is exactly what should always happen in such circumstances. The sending off of the player and the chance for the offended team to re-dress the balance. The fact that the offended team in this instance didn’t re-dress the balance is no fault of Suarez. They were given a free swing at him, and they punched air.

So the free kick was unfair. The offside call was unfair. The handball was unfair. The penalty was fair. Ghana were plucky but unlucky, and did themselves and their homeland proud, but are out because they can’t score penalties. End of. Now pick up your girly tissues and lipstick and get on with it people. There’s two more quarter finals to watch, time to man up.

Tottenham Hotspur fans convinced Eriksen is on verge of signing new contract

During the summer window, most football fans are desperate to find out who their clubs will scoop up.

Some are also concerned with whether they will lose any of their first-team stars, and that has certainly occupied the minds of Tottenham Hotspur supporters.

The futures of Toby Alderweireld and Mousa Dembele look murky, while Danny Rose’s position at the club is also uncertain.

One man who the fans are desperate to sign a new deal is Christian Eriksen, who had an impressive season with 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions.

Manchester City want Van Dijk, Liverpool fans react

Throughout the summer, rumours were rife that Liverpool wanted to sign Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk to solve their defensive woes.

In the end, the Saints stood firm and refused a sale, which left the Reds in trouble as they did not appear to have a back-up plan.

Van Dijk submitted a transfer request, making it clear that he wanted to move on.

Since the summer window closed, speculation has been circling that the Dutchman will seal a move away from St Mary’s in January.

Liverpool and Chelsea have been the two clubs touted in the newspapers as possible suitors for Van Dijk, but now it has emerged that Manchester City have entered the race.

According to The Guardian, manager Pep Guardiola regards the centre-back as a top priority in his transfer activity for January.

The Premier League leaders are keen to strengthen their defence amid concerns over Vincent Kompany’s long-term fitness.

Fulham striker Darren Bent names Sunderland’s FIFA nerd

Darren Bent has spilled the beans on the best gamers from his old team mates, and called out his new Fulham team mates on FIFA in his exclusive column with AskMen.com, published just moments ago. Bent says:

“At Sunderland, the boys used to give David Meyler a lot of banter that he used to play Xbox so much that he thought he was actually playing in the game in training. To be fair, he was pretty good at FIFA… It’ll be very interesting to see which of my new team-mates at Fulham can offer me a challenge…”

In an interview that’s bound to get gaming fans everywhere feeling nostalgic, new Fulham signing Darren Bent has also named Streets of Rage his favourite ever video game. Bent says:

“I’ve been into video games since I was really small. I had a Sega Master System, but it was when the Mega Drive launched that I became really hooked. That was just unbelievable. Streets of Rage was my favourite game and remains my all-time favourite. Even when all my mates transferred over to the Nintendo 64, I was still true to the Mega Drive and Streets of Rage. Those massive telephone boxes, beating up the baddies with the lamp posts and baseball bats; it was just the best by a mile. I honestly played that for about ten hours straight one day. My Mum had to take my Mega Drive away from me as I couldn’t stop playing it!”

Magpies ace on Arsenal’s wanted list

Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote is the man Arsene Wenger wants to replace the departed Alex Song to bolster the Gunners midfield, according to the Daily Mirror.

The central midfield positions are worryingly vacant for Arsenal as they go into today’s tough clash away at Stoke City and Wenger has decided that Tiote is the man to fill the void.

It was reported that both Manchester City and Chelsea were told they would have to pay in excess of £20million to capture the Ivory Coast international in this transfer window but Wenger is adamant he can force the price down.

The 26 year old would also see an improvement in his weekly wages if he moved down to north London and Tiote is apparently very aware of the Gunners interest with under a week to go until the summer transfer window slams shut.

Manchester United fans are losing patience with Mourinho after West Ham draw

Manchester United ensured they will finish second in the English Premier League this season with a 0-0 draw away to West Ham United on Thursday evening.

Although challenging for the title is clearly what they want, the point earned at least ensures they will finish ahead of Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal, who all share similar ambitions to the Red Devils.

The performance wasn’t the most exciting from Jose Mourinho’s side against the Hammers, setting up with three centre-backs and two defensive wing-backs, leading to criticism from supporters who are rapidly losing patience with his negative tactics.

Fans want to see a more dynamic and expansive United side that brings an attacking style to their opponents, designed to go out and win games.

Some are so fed up that they’re calling for the Portuguese to go this summer.

Mourinho and his team will be hoping they can cheer supporters up by lifting the FA Cup when they meet Chelsea in the final next week.

£49m for Sterling…..So how much for this Arsenal ace?

Let the hyperbole begin. Arsenal’s Community Shield victory, just the latest episode in their growing ever bitter rivalry with Chelsea, brings with it high expectations for the upcoming season.

The Gunners may be ready to mount a serious title challenge for the first time in years, only time will tell. What is for sure, however, is that the fortune of England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be crucial to their chances.

Scoring the winner in the tradition curtain-raiser, ‘The Ox’ terrorised one of the best defences in Europe all afternoon. Right sided wing rivals Raheem Sterling and Theo Walcott have earned pay increases this summer, making headlines in the transfer window. Meanwhile, the ex-Saint has quietly been getting on with his business, trying to overcome his injury problems.

[ffc-gal cat=”arsenal” no=”5″]

Walcott has recently signed an extension at the Emirates, reportedly earning £140,000-a-week. After almost a decade of service, perhaps he is more entitled than Chamberlain to earn that sort of money, but the 21-year-old should not be too far behind.

He is one of the most exciting young players in Europe, and often gets forgotten about behind flashier names.

Sterling completed a protracted saga to Manchester City in a £49m deal earlier this summer. In that sort of mega-money world, what would Oxlade-Chamberlain be worth? Man City’s new man is also a hugely exciting prospect, but his international team mate has already achieved more.

Two FA Cup medals and two Community Shields is not the most packed of trophy cabinets, but still quadrupoles’ that of Sterling’s. It is hard to directly compare two versatile, dynamic young internationals at this stage of their careers, and the term ‘better’ may not be the best to use.

However, the Gunner provides a lot more of an end product than the £49m man. The City bosses are unlikely to have shelled out that sort of money for what Sterling has done, more at what he might do. This is not to say that Oxlade-Chamberlain is the end product, but using that kind of logic, he would surely be worth more.

Stunning performances in big games, against the likes of Bayern Munich, Manchester United and now Chelsea are what ‘Chambo’ is all about. His all action approach is reminiscent of team-mate Alexis Sanchez, and his versatility allows him to operate either out wide or through the middle.

End product is the only product to write home about in top level football. The belter to secure a second Community Shield was only half the story in an excellent performance at Wembley. This was £49m-esque performance against the current champions. It is not his first. Surely it will not be his last.

Injury problems may affect any hypothetical price for the Gunner, but at just 21-years old, it is still likely to be upwards of £40m. Perhaps Sterling comes as more of a marketing package, but ‘The Ox’ is undoubtedly stronger.

Hulk linked with Tottenham switch

Zenit St Petersburg striker Hulk is being linked with a move to Spurs after his agent admitted a switch to England could be on, according to the Metro.

The frontman has been linked with a move to Spurs in the past because of his connection with Andre Villas-Boas, who was his manager at Porto, and the speculation has resurfaced once more.

Big-spending Monaco have recently been linked with a mega money bid for the Brazilian but the players agent, Teodoro Fonseca, has denied this and admitted a move to England was currently more likely for the 26-year-old Zenit St Petersburg striker.

“There are two great teams of the Premier League to have made their interest known,” Fonseca told OJogo.

“It is normal that such news would arise because it was with Andre Villas-Boas and Porto where Hulk had his best time.

“The future of Hulk is with Zenit, but I have never made such statements [about Monaco], I have not spoken to anyone from France.”

Raheem Sterling could feature for Under-21s

Raheem Sterling’s meteoric rise to stardom continues, as Stuart Pearce admits he is considering placing the talented 17-year-old in the England Under-21 squad for the upcoming European Championship Qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Norway. The Daily Mail reports.

Sterling’s great progress into the Liverpool first-team has attracted the admiring glances of Pearce, after the youngster’s man-of-the-match performance in the Europa League against Hearts and the equally impressive display against Champions, Manchester City.

Sterling was originally picked to play for the Under-19s to face Germany in Hamburg, but is now likely to be fast-tracked into the Under-21s.

It is promising news for Liverpool and Manager Brendan Rodgers, who has been delighted with the progress of Sterling.

“I have seen a lot of development in him in a short time. He takes on a lot of the concepts and he is very good with instructions. Normally wingers want to do their own thing but, tactically, Raheem is improving every day”, he said.

Sterling is also eligible to represent Jamaica as he was born in Kingston, something which his mother desires, but this latest development could see Sterling commit his future to England.
