The media’s ludicrous Spurs love-in needs to stop

The Sun’s Neil Ashton was roundly mocked this week for an article in which he favourably compared the present Spurs side with Busby’s Babes and Bill Shankly’s great Liverpool side. English football was entering a golden age, the tabloid’s chief football reporter trumpeted, while strongly alluding that this was directly due to the rise of Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

The Premier League should ‘cherish, encourage, and embrace’ them. They are ‘irresistible’. He ended his puffed-up piece of propagandising by insisting that we all watch this incredible team while we had the chance.

Yet Ashton’s ludicrous hyperbole was hardly an outlier. Across all media platforms Tottenham are praised to the rafters with such casual regularity these days that a newbie to the sport would assume it is they who have made this season’s title race a one-team formality and not Manchester City. For the record Spurs are twenty points shy of the top and are currently lying outside of a Champions League spot, one point behind a Chelsea team deemed to be in entrenched crisis.

The press’ enthralment of Spurs is hardly a new phenomenon of course with the North London club long said to have benefited from positive coverage in comparison to their rivals. The timing of its escalation though is puzzling even when recent impressive performances away to Liverpool and Juventus and at home to Arsenal and Manchester United are factored in. In recent seasons they have been in genuine contention to win their first league title for over 65 years.

Now they are hopelessly adrift of that aspiration and furthermore are on course to only match their second worst league placing since 2009. In the last few days alone two journalists have confided to me that they are absolutely perplexed by their colleagues’ decision to ramp up the Tottenham love-in now of all times.

If it is somewhat galling to see the continued excellence of this excellent 11  portrayed in an exaggerated fashion that is nothing in relation to when it is broken down further to the biased representation of its players. The beatification of Harry Kane is one thing but at least the striker justifies his acclaim on a weekly basis with goal after goal after goal. Dele Alli however does not have the performances to back up the hype. Not this season. Far from it.

The attacking midfielder has always included a good portion of rough with the smooth, an ‘edge’ to his game that pundits and journalists alike could excuse when his form was exceptional with the reasoning that it was necessary to fire him up a level. That reasoning incidentally was never less than nonsense at the best of times. Only now it’s anything but the best of times for the 21-year-old and with the player a shadow of his former self his proclivity to indulge in football’s dark arts has really come to the fore.

It is fair to suggest that if this nose-dive in form and reckless elevation of ego had combined in any other previously over-hyped English star the press would delight in their favourite sport of Tall Poppying, laying into the player with unsavoury relish. Yet in the case of Alli he ‘needs to cut that part of his game out’ apparently. Two weeks ago at Anfield he even received contrary praise for admitting and apologising for a dive so startlingly blatant even Donald Trump would have held his hands up to.

The last home-grown player to enjoy such unaccountability was a young Wayne Rooney. Rooney was ten times the player Alli is at a similar age.

It does not take the mind of a conspiracy theorist to work out why this is so. Alli cannot be considered a popular player among neutrals and in fact the very opposite applies. He does however play for Tottenham Hotspur.

If coverage of this modern Spurs side can be viewed as generously enthusiastic then the same cannot be said of their depiction on social media. There – presumably as a direct reaction to the flowery prose and smitten glances encountered everywhere else – it slants too unfairly towards the negative given their establishment as a force to be reckoned with in recent years. Spurs are damned for being ‘bottlers’. They are derided for an absence of silverware. They are ‘Spursy’.

This begs the question – why can’t Pochettino’s team be reasonably estimated? Why can’t it ever be somewhere in-between with considerable admiration for the outstanding work done by the Argentine during his three-and-a-half years at the Lane coupled with a recognition that for all of their strengths, collective and individually, there appears to be an – admittedly high – glass ceiling to their ability?

Perhaps this is illustrative of where we are now in football with nuance and reason discarded for only extremes. It does need pointing out though that considering where the main section of Spurs’ cheerleaders reside the charge that they don’t win anything is unfounded. They’ve won the Media Cup now for three years running, on this occasion uncontested.

The Brazilian every Arsenal and Liverpool fan will be hoping to see

Name: Bernard

Country: Brazil

Club: Shakhtar Donetsk

Age: 21

International Caps: 11

Position: Attacking Midfield Left

With Arsenal and Liverpool reportedly keen on Bernard, fans of both clubs will be eager to catch a glimpse of the 21 year old tonight. Although he is not yet considered an integral member of the Brazilian setup just yet, the Shakhtar Donetsk forward is regarded as one of his country’s finest young talents.

Having missed out on the winger last summer when he made the move to Ukraine, speculation is mounting that these Premier League heavyweights could be readying offers once again. The player himself refuses to speak “about the possibility of a transfer” due to his focus on the World Cup. Reports in Brazil claim however that the Bernard’s representatives are attempting to cancel his contract due to the current political unrest in the Ukraine.

Standing at just 5 foot 5 inches, the 21 year old has frequently had to overcome doubts over his diminutive stature. With a clear weakness in physical strength, there are those that question whether Bernard is really suited to the style of the Premier League.

But as he has proven for club and country, the forward has an electric turn of pace which perfectly complements his technique and low centre of gravity.  Bernard frequently beats his man with a one-two or a quick flick, as well as his raw pace. The 21 year old likes to drift out wide and has demonstrated a keen eye for goal.

Whilst Bernard will most likely be utilised as an impact substitute at this year’s World Cup, he is expected to have a big future for Brazil. Concerns will always linger over his stature, but Arsenal or Liverpool could be rewarded handsomely if they make a move for the winger this summer.

Where did it all go wrong on the international front?

There was a time in football when playing for England was a tremendous honour and one that was greatly appreciated by those given the call. International recognition is no longer the highest accolade for the footballers in this country, with many happy to turn the back on their nation. Where did it all go wrong and how has this problem manifested itself?

Player power is rife in most levels of the game, however I fear International level sees it at its very worst. You obviously have your rare breeds like the Beckhams and Gerrards of this world who would do anything for their country, but ultimately the England scene doesn’t appear as attractive as once was. Does the modern player think so highly of himself that he calls time on International football simply because the manager chooses someone else above them in the pecking order, as we have witnessed in recent years? It is just ridiculous and shows how much standards and respect of their profession has died.

Maybe I am wrong in this instance and should look at it with the outlook as to how the England manager may have contributed to the cheapening of this honour. It raises an interesting point as to how players could look upon representing his country with great pride, especially when the likes of Fabio Capello and Roy Hodgson used to give out first caps like confetti, based on simply a handful of good performances. With the greatest respect to the likes of Jake Livermore and Raheem Sterling – are they really worthy of an England call up just yet, especially when the former is not even a regular in the starting line-up at club level. Carl Jenkinson has put a handful of solid performances and I’m sure had he been given international clearance then Hodgson wouldn’t have hesitated in calling him up. It is an absolute joke and a clear sign as to how we struggle as a nation, fielding players that have barely played 25 games at club level. Sir Bobby Robson took 2 years to nurture Paul Gascoigne into the International fold before making him a regular – highlighting how much it has changed.

It is a sad state of affairs and arguably why the majority of supporters put out a collective groan when International week comes along, but can the honour of representing England ever exist again in this country? Has it been damaged beyond repair? I for one fear the horse has well and truly bolted, although I can’t actually put my finger as to where it all went wrong with the Three Lions. Maybe it needs a manager with a bit of passion and drive to restore some pride – something I fear the England management team has lacked for some time.

Sunderland fans delighted Steele is leaving

Sunderland fans are praising the heavens about their latest transfer move, as Jason Steele is set to join Premier League Brighton.

Plenty of things have gone wrong at the Stadium of Light in the last couple of years, but the biggest factor in the Sunderland’s downfall has to be their quite simply awful transfer business.

Even when the Black Cats were scraping their way to safety in the top tier, the club has been making poor decisions in the transfer market for quite some time.

One of the biggest issues with the squad last season was the lack of a solid goalkeeper, as the likes of Steele and Lee Camp just could not fill the boots of Jordan Pickford.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”256266″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Three reasons we love to hate… Spain”]

Fans were annoyed when they found out there is no sell-on clause in Pickford’s move to Everton this week, but this latest goalkeeper news has certainly cheered them up.

Steele joined the club in 2017, and did not impress in his 15 Championship starts last season.

Fans are almost in disbelief that he’s earned a move to the Premier League, but they are thankful nonetheless to get rid of an underwhelming player.

Manchester United fans criticise Martial for not speaking English

Anthony Martial has become quite the fan favourite at Manchester United this season.

The Frenchman had to fight his way into Jose Mourinho’s team after being left out of the squad a handful of times.

In the current campaign, the attacker has been thriving, scoring 11 goals and creating six assists in 34 appearances – 21 starts – in all competitions.

This week, the Frenchman was named United’s Player of the Month for January due to his impressive form, which included three goals and two assists.

As expected, the fans were delighted that the 22-year-old was handed the gong, but some were left disappointed with his thank-you message to the supporters.

The former Monaco star said all the right things, but a handful of United’s following were irked by the fact that he did not speak French.

Martial has been living in England for the past two-and-a-half years, but his video message indicates that he is not 100% comfortable speaking the local language.

Is this Tottenham outcast the answer to Chelsea’s problems?

Tottenham’s Brazilian midfielder, Paulinho, has emerged as a potential target for Jose Mourinho at Chelsea this summer, according to reports in the Telegraph. His £17million move from Corinthians in the summer was considered one of the more exciting transfers in the Premier League, as Spurs made moves to compensate for the expected departure of Gareth Bale.

A promising start to both Paulinho and Tottenham’s season soon became forgotten as Spurs’ season petered out into yet another trudge into the Thursday night doldrums they have been trying to avoid for the past three seasons.

Paulinho has recently fallen victim to Tim Sherwood’s erratic management at Spurs, and has had to make do with substitute appearances in recent weeks. With Chelsea and Mourinho on the scene, you start to wonder how long his Spurs adventure will continue for.

The Brazilian has hardly set the league alight since he arrived in the summer, so some may view the rumours as slightly obscure. He’s only really performed for Tottenham in fits and starts, so for many it may be difficult to understand what Chelsea see in Paulinho.

Well, Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has already named nine players of his 23-man squad to play in the World Cup, and Paulinho is one of them. Scolari has been willing to overlook Paulinho’s indifferent form at Tottenham this season because, quite frankly, he’s a damn good footballer. And with the breadth of selection Scolari has to choose from, to be named as one of his first nine picks, is a measure of how highly he is rated in his home country.

Statistically speaking, Paulinho’s performances for Tottenham this season have actually been acceptable.  He boasts an 85 per cent pass completion, and averages 2.2 tackles per game. Both in and out of possession he is an asset. With five goals, primarily from a holding role in midfield, his scoring form hasn’t been a disappointment by any stretch of the imagination.

Paulinho would add more flair and energy into Chelsea’s midfield. With Chelsea’s central midfield soon to suffer from an ageing Frank Lampard, an out of favour – and quite frankly limited – John Obi Mikel, and a potential departure in the shape of their fuzzy-haired, overgrown child, David Luiz, gaping holes soon appear. And Paulinho may just fill one of those holes nicely.

Furthermore, the heavy Brazilian influence at Chelsea – Oscar, Ramires, Willian, David Luiz – may just prove to be alluring for Paulinho. It makes the switch feel like a match made in heaven.

Whether Paulinho provides an ‘answer’ to the problems at Chelsea is questionable however. Central midfield isn’t an area they urgently lack quality. Chelsea’s problem this season hasn’t been input. It’s been output. Woefully misfiring strikers are Jose Mourinho’s primary concern. Paulinho isn’t a player brought in to add goals to the side, so in answer to whether he is the ‘answer’, quite simply, no.

He’s had a year to acclimatise to the demands of the Premier League, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Paulinho recreate some of his international form more regularly. And for Chelsea, his added athleticism in midfield may not go amiss.

So far the Premier League hasn’t seen the Paulinho that turned up at the Confederations Cup for Brazil in the summer of 2013. The player who has meandered – at times uninterestedly – around the field for Spurs, is not the high-energy, flair player Scolari is taking to the World Cup. On home soil, with a Brazilian following, the midfielder will come alive this summer.

With the right players around him, and the right management, we could very well see the player who Tottenham thought they were signing from Corinthians for a club record fee. If those players happen to be Chelsea’s players, and that management is Mourinho’s, don’t be surprised to see Paulinho become a Premier League force.

Manchester United ace on the road to 2014

Manchester United defender Rafael believes he is maturing as a footballer and has announced his intentions to be included in the Brazil squad for the 2014 World Cup.

Since joining in 2008, Rafael has become well known at Old Trafford for being an attacking-minded full-back with a tendency to dive in and make reckless tackles, however the 22-year-old believes he is ironing-out the imperfections in his game.

With Phil Jones and Chris Smalling sidelined so far this season, Rafael has been a regular for United at right-back. The Brazilian has been impressive and netted twice in the Premier League.

“The way I play for United has changed a little bit and I have scored some goals as well” said Rafael.

“But mature is the word. I always want the ball. Now I read the game more and know what the opposing player is going to do.”

He has now set his sights on the next World Cup: “It is a big time for me. The World Cup is the big competition for Brazil and all the fans expect us to win. I am really looking forward to being there.”

His boss, Sir Alex Ferguson agrees that Rafael is improving and eradicating parts of his game that made him a liability at times in previous seasons.

“He is maturing and learning all the time” said the Scottish boss.

“Rafael has all the ingredients of a great player. He is blessed with great enthusiasm, skill and speed.

“He was quite impulsive and tended to over-commit himself.

“We have gone over it a few times but, bit by bit, it is all coming together and he was easily our best player Saturday” added Ferguson.

Bruce may not be as exciting as Bielsa, but he can be the pragmatic choice that promotes Leeds

As reported by The Telegraph, Leeds United are interested in appointing Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce this summer.

What’s the story?

With Marcelo Bielsa emerging as a manager target last week, many fans were expecting the Elland Road side to go down a non-traditional route in selecting a new boss.

However, a surprising new candidate for the job has emerged.

The Telegraph say that Leeds have made an approach for Villa boss Steve Bruce, capitalising on the uncertainty currently surrounding the Villans in a financial sense.

However, the paper reckon Bruce has yet to give an answer to Leeds, waiting to see how bad things are at Villa this summer before making a decision on his future.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”252976″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch 21 things that will definitely happen at the World Cup”]

Would he be a good appointment?

Bielsa is undoubtedly a more exciting appointment than Steve Bruce for many Leeds United supporters. Having managed Chile, Argentina and a variety of top clubs in Europe, his pedigree is beyond the usual limitations set by playing in the English Championship.

However, Bruce would be a solid and pragmatic choice. There is little risk to his appointment given his in depth knowledge of the division and the players in it, coming so close to getting promoted with Aston Villa just last season.

Having been promoted with Birmingham and Hull to the English Premier League previously, he has a proven track record of getting ambitious clubs into the top-flight.

That’s what Leeds are after.

Revealed: Tottenham fans rate Sissoko 3.1/10 for performance vs Southampton

The 1-1 draw at St. Mary’s in Sunday’s 4pm kickoff was undoubtedly a frustrating experience for Tottenham fans. Mauricio Pochettino’s side entered the clash amid a run of eight wins in ten games across all competitions, but just couldn’t extend that to 9 in 11 versus a Southampton side who, despite gaining a point, find themselves in the relegation zone.

Somewhere in between a suspect playing surface, the absence of chief creator Christian Eriksen and a solid defensive performance from the home side, Tottenham failed to make further progress after a Harry Kane header cancelled out Davinson Sanchez’s own-goal opener.

And it appears no individual frustrated Southampton more than Moussa Sissoko, who hasn’t exactly been a beacon of popularity since joining the north London club from Newcastle in summer 2016. In fact, when we asked Spurs fans to rate each individual performance against Southampton out of ten, the 53-cap Frenchman picked up an average score of just 3.1 – the worst of any Tottenham player and even lower than what their three substitutes received.

The statistics, though, suggest that meagre rating is somewhat harsh. Sissoko actually created the most chances, four, of any player on the pitch and made the most tackles, three, of any Tottenham star. So, Spurs fans, do you think Sissoko is treated unfairly by some supporters? Let us know by commenting below…

The Capital One Cup Semi-Finals combined XI

As we prepare for the Semi-Final of this year’s Capital One Cup, we take a look at a combined XI of all the players involved as Manchester United, Sunderland, Manchester City and West Ham all vie for a place in the Final at Wembley.

Goalkeeper – David De Gea

Manchester United’s Spanish shotstopper hasn’t conceded in the Capital One Cup so far this season and will be the man to beat in the Semi-Finals.

Having pulled off some wonder saves in the earlier rounds of the competition, United fans will be hoping he is in similar form to book their place in the Final at Wembley.

Right back – Rafael De Silva

The full-back from Old Trafford has put in some influential attacking displays so far for David Moyes, giving his side a lot of opportunities on the overlap. The Brazilian makes the side for this reason.

Centre back – John O’Shea

Sunderland enjoyed an impressive victory against Chelsea and John O’Shea has been at the heart of the defence for Gus Poyet’s side, showing why he used to play at the top of the Premier League for fellow Semi-Finalists Manchester United just a few years ago.

Centre back – Joleon Lescott

Having lost his place in City’s Premier League starting XI to Martin Demichelis, the England international has been brilliant in the Capital One Cup so far, leading the blue side of Manchester into the Semi-Finals with some stoic performances.

Left-back – Patrice Evra

The Manchester United captain scored a fantastic goal in Round 5 of the Capital One Cup, helping ease the pressure on manager David Moyes as they reached the Semi-Finals.

Yet again, Patrice Evra has been solid at the back this year and has also given a lot of attacking threat when going forward.

Centre midfield – Jack Collison

West Ham’s performances have been driven by their midfield this year in the Capital One Cup and Jack Collison has had an enormous contribution to his side’s success.

The 25-year-old scored a penalty against Burnley and has done a lot of the dirty work in winning back possession for the Hammers this season.

Centre midfield – Ravel Morrison

The ex-Manchester United midfielder has been Sam Allardyce’s best player this season. With his creativity and flair, the young England prodigy will be the key to West Ham’s success and potentially his country’s performance at this year’s World Cup too.

Left midfield – Adam Johnson

The former ManchesterCity winger is not easy to play against and is often at the heart of every Sunderland attack. With the ability to beat his man and deliver a wicked cross, he’s a dangerous weapon for the Black Cats. Also able to bag himself a goal or two, Johnson has rebuilt his career at the Stadium of Light and will be a big threat to Manchester United in the Semi-Finals.

Right midfield – Jesus Navas

City’s new Spanish midfielder has taken to life in Manchester rather well, having made his move from Sevilla in the summer. Navas has been the focal point for ManCity’s attacks this season and the Spaniard has not only scored important goals but created plenty too. He will be integral to the Citizens’ season as they look to clinch their first piece of silverware this year in the Capital One Cup.

Striker – Edin Dzeko

Manuel Pellegrini’s attacking options are far from limited, but the Bosnian striker has certainly taken his chance in the Capital One Cup to attract the attention of his Chilean manager.

Scoring twice to help secure his side’s place in the Semi-Finals this year, Dzeko is second in the top goalscorers so far having bagged himself four goals in three games in this year’s Capital One Cup.

Striker – Javier Hernandez

Manchester United’s Mexican striker has a proven goal-scoring streak at this level and David Moyes will be very happy with his contribution to the success they’ve had so far in the Capital One Cup.

Hernandez has scored three times in three games so far in the competition and will be looking to bag a couple more to help his side reach the Final.
