West Ham eye £30m-valued Chris Wood

West Ham are facing a battle to secure mooted target Chris Wood, according to emerging reports…

What’s the word?

The Mirror claimed that the Irons are one of three Premier League clubs eyeing up a move for the Burnley striker ahead of the summer transfer window, which is set to open on Wednesday.

Aston Villa and Everton are also said to be monitoring his situation, with the latter waiting to see whether their next manager wants to pursue a deal or not.

The Clarets will not want to lose such an integral player, especially as he has two years to run on his current contract at Turf Moor, but every player has his price and it’s thought that Wood is valued in the region of £30m, as per Football Insider.

Moyes’ next Ferguson

Football Insider added that David Moyes is a huge admirer of the 29-year-old because of his physicality, finishing ability and knack for spearheading the attack.

This should come as no surprise, though, as every club the Scotsman has managed has had a player of this calibre – an aggressive and in-your-face target man.

The most famous example is Duncan Ferguson at Goodison Park, where Moyes’ fellow countryman played 108 times across five seasons under him before working alongside him in a coaching capacity.

Wood has been a prolific goalscorer in the English top flight in recent seasons, hitting double figures in each of his last four campaigns, including a tally of 14 goals in 32 appearances during 2019/20, via Transfermarkt.

Premier League record scorer Alan Shearer knows a thing or two about scoring goals in the big time and he’s a big fan of Wood, too.

“I like him, I like what he does for the team and he is the focal point for them He is very good at occupying two centre-halves,” claimed the former Newcastle and Blackburn talisman, via Lancs Live, before adding: “He can keep hold of it and bring other players into the game. He is horrible to play against and he won’t give defenders a moment’s peace.”

Wood has also been described as a “natural goalscorer” by his former boss Garry Monk, as well as someone who is “frightening” to come up against by old Milwall teammate Scott Malone, so there are plenty of reasons why the 1.91m (6 foot 3) powerhouse could fit Moyes’ eye.

It’s no secret that the 58-year-old will be absolutely desperate for another striker this summer, having lost Sebastian Haller during the January transfer window with no backup in sight.

The Irons cannot afford to go into the new season with just Michail Antonio as a centre-forward option, so the vastly experienced 56-cap New Zealand international could well be a shrewd piece of business if West Ham pull it off.

GSB must look to sanction this deal as Moyes may well unearth his next Duncan Ferguson at the London Stadium.

Steve Bull claims players could follow Nuno

Both Wolves and Nuno Espirito Santo are yet to find their next path on their journey in football and when the former boss finds his new challenge, Wolves legend Steve Bull believes that some players may want to follow him.

Nuno was reportedly not actively looking to get straight back into management, however, since Carlo Ancelotti’s unexpected departure from Everton and following talks with Crystal Palace, the former Wolves manager has been strongly linked with a quick return to the Premier League

It would be a different sort of challenge for Nuno as he would be operating without the help of Jorge Mendes in the transfer market but he could have a lot more money to spend, which could see him raid his former club.

There has been a lot of managers linked with both the Everton and Palace job but Wolves fans will be hoping it isn’t Nuno because he had such a strong bond with the squad that he could potentially look to tempt them away from Molineux, something Bull exclusively told Football FanCast:

“It could be like a can of worms now because wherever Nuno goes he could end up taking one or two players with him.”

Someone that Wolves are reportedly willing to sell this money is Ruben Neves, despite him being the main focal point in their side. Wolves are willing to do business at around the £35 million price mark this summer.

The money would hopefully be put back into the first team and allow them to improve the overall side with a couple of additions at the cost of selling one of their star players.

Spurs reporter discusses Gallardo

Football.london writer Alasdair Gold has revealed Tottenham are not looking at Marcelo Gallardo to become their new boss despite him being similar to Mauricio Pochettino.

The Lowdown: Spurs still in manager hunt

Although Ryan Mason is currently in charge at Spurs, it feels unlikely he will be given the job on a full-time basis due to his inexperience. As such, the search for a new boss goes on.

A number of names have previously been mentioned, such as Julian Nagelsmann (The Daily Mail) and Hansi Flick (Sport 1), but Daniel Levy appears to be no closer to getting a deal confirmed.

The Latest: Gold discusses Gallardo

During a Q&A with football.london, Gold was asked whether Gallardo or Julen Lopetegui had been considered for the role. He said:

“Gallardo is certainly growing his reputation and some people believe he’s similar to Pochettino in style and Lopetegui has plenty of experience now but as far as I’m aware they’re not in the mix.”

The Verdict: Plenty of experience

Gallardo may not be a household name as a manager in Europe – many European football fans will know him from his time with Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco as a player – but he is one of South America’s best coaches.

He has won the Copa Libertadores on two occasions with River Plate, adding to the one he won as a player, and has picked up 13 trophies throughout his managerial career despite only being 45.

As Gold went on to mention with his answer, a move from River to Tottenham would be a big culture shock, so it is unlikely he would be considered for the role at this point. In the future, though, he may be one to keep an eye on if he proves himself elsewhere in Europe.

Sunderland predicted XI to face Charlton

When Aiden McGeady is on the ball, the Irishman usually comes up trumps. He scored one of his biggest goals in a Sunderland shirt yet as the Mackems drew with Peterborough last time out.

Their 1-1 draw was a massive point in the context of promotion. A place in the Championship is entirely in their destiny, with two games in hand over league leaders Hull City.

The Black Cats have another huge game on Saturday afternoon when they face Charlton Athletic, and they do so in excellent form. They sit in third place and haven’t lost since early February; that’s a run of 14 matches in all competitions.

Lee Johnson has inspired a remarkable revival at the Stadium of Light, with his side now better placed for promotion than they have been in the last few years.

With the Addicks to come this weekend, who will Johnson select for the Wearsiders’ latest outing?

The manager admitted in his pre-match press conference on Friday that he had plenty of dilemmas in terms of his starting XI. Denver Hume isn’t a million miles away from starting, while Bailey Wright returned to training this week.

That being said, we doubt the pair of them will start as they continue their respective recoveries from injury.

We’re tipping two changes to be made to the starting XI which picked up a point against Posh. The first is a return to the side for Lynden Gooch.

Ross Stewart earned a rare start last Monday but such is his lack of match action that it seems unlikely he’ll feature from the off again.

A second change is in defence, where Conor McLaughlin replaces Grant Leadbitter in the starting XI. The £13,000-per-week midfielder’s performances have been sub-par since returning from a dislocated shoulder and, as a result, Max Power moves forward into the middle of the park.

Luke O’Nien and Dion Sanderson continue in defence despite Wright’s return to training.

Tottenham could target Potter

According to a report by the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur could target Brighton and Hove Albion boss Graham Potter as a possible replacement for the dismissed Jose Mourinho – with the Englishman emerging as a possible candidate alongside Scott Parker.

Mourinho was given his marching order by Spurs on Monday after a very bizarre season, coming after they briefly raced to top of the Premier League table near the end of last year.

Tottenham could target Potter

Tottenham even thrashed Manchester United 6-1 at Old Trafford, becoming only the second team in Premier League history to do so, but a sorry slump of form soon followed their electric start.

A dismal run of results after the New Year included an humiliating Europa League exit at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb and a tame north London derby loss to Arsenal.

As a result, Mourinho was sacked by Tottenham, and there have been no shortage of successors touted in the media.

The Mail now claim, alongside the usual suspects Julian Nagelsmann and Brendan Rodgers, that the likes of Parker and Potter could now emerge as unlikely candidates.

Transfer Tavern take

The latter man in particular has attracted plenty of plaudits for his job on the south coast, with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola blown away by his quality and even calling him ‘the best English manager right now’ whilst professing his love for Brighton’s style of play (Brighton and Hove Independent).

As well as this, Independent journalist Miguel Delaney dubbed him an ‘excellent manager’ and praised the Seagulls’ ‘brave’ decision to appoint him.

Out of all the outside candidates, as a result, we believe the £1 million-per-year boss could be considered as a very credible dark horse for the job behind favourites Nagelsmann and Rodgers, due to his relatively low wages and forward-thinking tactics.

Liverpool close in on shock Garay signing

Liverpool are reportedly closing in on the signing of centre-back Ezequiel Garay this summer in a surprise transfer story.

The Reds have had a disastrous season in the injury department, losing a host of key players throughout the campaign. Jurgen Klopp has been particularly hampered at centre-back, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all expected to be out until the summer.

It could be that the Liverpool manager eyes up reinforcements in that area during the summer transfer window, but a shock rumour is now doing the rounds.

[freshpress-quiz id=“313155″]

Liverpool eye up move for Garay

According to El Gol Digital, the Reds are even at the advanced stage of negotiations with Garay, who played for Argentina in their 2014 World Cup final defeat to Germany.

The 34-year-old is currently a free agent, having left Valencia last year following a four-year stint with the La Liga side. He has made 466 club career appearances, 43 of which have come in the Champions League (Transfermarkt).

Transfer Tavern take

Despite his considerable pedigree, Garay would be a strange addition, considering he turns 35 later this year and is approaching the end of his career.

On top of that, he hasn’t played consistently at the top level for years and has had endless injuries of his own, so a deal makes little sense for Liverpool.

Vasco x Vila Nova: prováveis times, onde ver, desfalques e palpites
