Manchester United make Christopher Nkunku contact

Manchester United have made contact over a possible move for Manchester City target Christopher Nkunku.

The Lowdown: Nkunku profiled

Nkunku, a France international, is primarily an attacking midfielder, although he can also turn out as a second striker or as a left midfielder.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 24-year-old has been described as an ‘explosive’ player, with Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch stating Nkunku has ‘no weakness’ during his time in charge of RB Leipzig earlier this season.

Nkunku has made 133 appearances for the Bundesliga side and has enjoyed a remarkable 2021/22 campaign, contributing to 52 goals in 49 games.

Manchester City have recently been linked with a summer swoop for Nkunku, but it looks as if the Red Devils are trying to get one up on their fierce rivals.

The Latest: United make contact

Sports Witness relayed an update from German outlet Bild regarding Nkunku on Thursday, claiming Manchester United have ‘spoken’ with the RB Leipzig star.

The report states that an offer in excess of €75m (£64.1m) could be enough, a figure that appears to be making PSG think twice.

The Verdict: Get it done

Nkunku has been one of the standout performers in Europe this season, so bringing him to Old Trafford would be an extremely exciting move under new boss Erik ten Hag.

Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard look set to depart this summer, leaving Bruno Fernandes as the only senior attacking midfielder available to Ten Hag.

Therefore, bringing in Nkunku appears to be a no-brainer, as not only would it make strengthen United’s options considerably ahead of Ten Hag’s first year in charge, but it would also be a big blow to Manchester City.

Everton: Patrick Boyland defends one Blues player after Spurs loss

The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland has defended Everton winger Anthony Gordon after the Toffees’ embarrassing display against Tottenham.

The Lowdown: Poor performances

Apart from their all four of their other Premier League games with the ex-Chelsea man in charge.

However, Monday night’s display against Tottenham was the worst of the lot, with a number of extremely poor performances taking place.

As per statistical experts SofaScore, Everton’s average rating across the team was 6.16, a monumental difference when compared with Spurs’ 7.41. The Toffees even had four players rated below a six, with Jordan Pickford on the receiving end of a very poor 4.9 rating.

The Latest: Boyland defends Gordon

One of the only positives for Lampard was Anthony Gordon, due to the determination he put in throughout. The 21-year-old had an 84% pass completion rate and made four successful dribble attempts, whilst winning an enormous 12 ground duels (via SofaScore).

Taking to Twitter, Boyland defended Gordon after the game, who was pictured clapping to the away crowd.

“Gordon goes over to clap the remaining Everton fans, gets applause back. Deserves that for the effort he put in. Raises his hand up apologetically and then limps off. Wasn’t on him”

The Verdict: Deserves more?

At just 21 years old, Gordon has played a substantial part in Everton’s season. He has made 22 Premier League appearances, 14 of which came in the starting XI.

When compared with some of the dire performances in the Spurs game, it was evident that Gordon deserved better around him, as a number of players seemingly looked disinterested after the first few goals went flying in.

This isn’t the first time the winger has been singled out for praise. When Everton drew 1-1 with Manchester United in October, former Toffees attacker James McFadden hailed the youngster’s display as “sensational”.

Thus, if this pattern continues to occur, it would not be surprising to see transfer news arise, especially if Everton get relegated this season.

Tendulkar's 49th century grinds Australia down

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsSachin Tendulkar’s harshest punishment was kept for Nathan Hauritz•AFP

Only a man blessed with immense powers of endurance could sustain a 20-year Test career and Sachin Tendulkar displayed exactly that quality on a day of Indian dominance in Bangalore. Tendulkar batted through the day, along the way recording his 49th Test century and helping to steer M Vijay to his first, as India all but demolished Australia’s first-innings advantage.Tendulkar finished the day unbeaten on 191 and MS Dhoni was on 11, and with India requiring only a draw to win the series, there was no need for Dhoni to consider a declaration. How Ricky Ponting would love to have called a close to India’s innings himself, after a day on which his attack looked toothless and failed to make a breakthrough until 3.21pm.When they did, they quickly made it two. Vijay’s edge behind off Mitchell Johnson was followed four balls later by the departure of the unlucky debutant Cheteshwar Pujara, who was padded up for more than six hours only to be greeted with skidder from Johnson, who trapped the new man lbw for 4.Suresh Raina made 32 before he drove Michael Clarke to mid-off late in the afternoon, but by then India were within sight of Australia’s first-innings 478. They had Tendulkar and Vijay to thank; their third-wicket partnership began on Sunday afternoon, stretched until after tea on Monday and was worth 308 runs. Both players batted wonderfully well, barely giving Australia the sniff of a wicket.Tendulkar moved to 99 with a slog-swept six off Nathan Hauritz and repeated the stroke to move into triple figures while offering the spectators at long-on a catch. Nobody has scored more Test hundreds than Tendulkar, who celebrated his seventh in the past year with his usual bat-raise and glance to the heavens, but without any major display of emotion.Vijay witnessed the ease with which his senior partner raced through the nineties but found it not so simple himself, and was stuck on 99 for more than 20 minutes. The Australians tried to dry up his options with short balls and when he eventually pushed a quick single to cover, he leapt for joy and was embraced by Tendulkar, who had started his Test career when Vijay was five years old.In those two decades, Tendulkar has had only one year – 2002 – better than his vintage efforts of 2010, which earned him the ICC Cricketer of the Year award last week. He continued that form by handling all of Australia’s bowlers with supreme comfort, racing to triple figures before lunch after he had started the day on 44.Tendulkar pulled Johnson for consecutive fours, sliced Shane Watson over cover with ease and respectfully kept out the most consistent of Australia’s bowlers, Ben Hilfenhaus. But the harshest punishment was saved for Hauritz. Even Shane Warne failed to mesmerise Tendulkar and in comparison, he found Hauritz easier to read than a cheap paperback.

Smart Stats

  • Sachin Tendulkar scored his 49th Test century and 11th against Australia. His tally of 11 centuries against Australia puts him second on the all time list behind Jack Hobbs.

  • Tendulkar reached his century with two sixes off Nathan Hauritz. He has reached a century with a six on five occasions.

  • Tendulkar’s century was his sixth of the year putting him third in the list of batsmen with the most centuries in a calendar year.

  • No wicket fell in the first session on the first three days of the Test. The most runs scored in the first session were 99 on the second day when Australia moved from 285 to 384.

  • The 308-run partnership for the third wicket between M Vijay and Tendulkar is the second highest against Australia.

  • During his innings, Tendulkar went past 150 for the 20th time in Tests surpassing Brian Lara’s record of 19 150-plus scores. It was also his sixth score of 150 plus against Australia, going past Wally Hammond and Lara who have five each.

As well as the two sixes, Tendulkar worked Hauritz effortlessly through the gaps, using his feet with the confidence of a man who knew exactly what was coming. The morning began with Hauritz conceding two boundaries down leg side to Tendulkar and that set the tone for much of the day.By comparison, Vijay was generally not as forceful but was no less important for India. He scored slower than his partner but showed sublime placement on both sides of the wicket and occasionally went over the top against Hauritz. There were echoes of VVS Laxman in Vijay’s clips and drives through the gaps, and that is enough to worry any Australian side.Unlike Tendulkar, Vijay did have a couple of nervous moments, including an lbw appeal from Hilfenhaus just after lunch that could easily have been given out. Before the break, Vijay had nearly run himself out in his eagerness to move from 49 to 50 when he pushed to cover, took off and was turned back, and was only saved by a wayward ping from the fielder Hauritz.Had Hauritz simply lobbed the ball to Tim Paine, Vijay would have been out by many metres. Peter George also gave up four overthrows with a high hurl from mid-off that would only have been appropriate had Paine also been 203 centimetres tall. Those efforts epitomised Australia’s sloppy and wearying day.The only man who didn’t seem tired at stumps was Tendulkar. That’s the benefit of 20 years of practice.

Celtic confident of permanent Jota signing

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has revealed that Celtic are ‘confident’ of signing Jota on a permanent deal, as per GiveMeSport.

The Lowdown: January talks

The Hoops were busy during the winter transfer window, with Ange Postecoglou bringing in five players after signing 12 in the summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-21/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Matt O’Riley was the final man through the door last month, and it could have been more, with Michael Nicholson in talks with Benfica and Tottenham regarding permanent deals for loanees Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers.

As we know, full-time transfers are yet to go through for the pair, but Celtic still have the option to purchase both at a combined fee of £12.5m.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments on Jota

O’Rourke was talking to GiveMeSport in a story shared on Monday evening.

He admitted that Celtic are ‘confident’ of finalising a move for Jota and added that there wasn’t a rush to push through a deal last month, saying: “I think Celtic are confident they can get this deal done. There wasn’t any major urgency to do it in January.”

The Verdict: 1st summer signing?

It appears as if Jota could well be the club’s first summer signing following this update, which would be brilliant news for all involved at Celtic Park.

The Portuguese winger has been one of a number of impressive attackers for the club this season, contributing to 15 goals in 24 games. He has been Postecoglou’s go-to option on the left-hand side of a front three and has also turned out on the right when required.

Therefore, should a permanent transfer go through, Jota could nail down the left-wing role for years to come alongside Kyogo Furuhashi in the middle and Liel Abada on the right, which has already proven to be an exciting front three.

Wolves’ Gomes handed big lifeline

While Wolves’ 2022 January transfer window may not have blown many fans away at the Midlands club, the Old Gold were pretty busy behind the scenes with new players coming in as well as seeing others move out for loan spells.

One move that took place at Molineux rather early on in the month saw defender Toti Gomes return from his loan spell with Grasshopper Club Zurich, who has since been given a massive lifeline by Bruno Lage to kickstart his Wolves career.

With Romain Saiss away on international duty, as well as Willy Boly and Yerson Mosquera out injured, Gomes has been given the chance to show Lage and everyone else at Wolves what he can do, with two appearances in the Premier League now under his belt against Southampton and Brentford.

With Lage making clear at the start of the window that he would’ve liked to have signed a new centre-back, it seems as though he put his faith in the 23-year-old to come in and do a job for the team.

In those two appearances for the Old Gold, the centre-back certainly showed why Lage made a good decision in giving him the chance to play, with WhoScored now listing him as Wolves’ second-highest rated player with an overall rating of 7.07/10, highlighting how capable he is of playing in the Premier League to a high standard.

A stunning review from two of his former teammates and those to have donned the Old Gold in the past supplement his good performances with Conor Ronan saying he’s “everything you want” and “rarely gets beaten.”

Leo Bonatini added: “Pffft, he’s a great defender. So fast — I think the fastest in our team. He has a lot of things to improve but this is good. He’s young, he’s a strong guy and I hope he has an opportunity in Wolves.”

That chance duly came but with Saiss set to return to Molineux soon, as well as Boly and Mosquera likely to come back to full fitness before the end of the season, it’ll be interesting to see if Lage continues to pick Gomes when he more centre-back options to choose from.

With Wolves set to take on fellow Premier League side Norwich City at the weekend for their latest FA Cup fixture, this would be another good opportunity for the Portuguese defender to show what he can do alongside the other, more experienced players in Lage’s squad.

If he can keep his place in the team from now until the end of the season, after being no more than an exiled passenger at the club since he arrived back in September 2020, this would surely make him one of the biggest winners at Wolves during the recent transfer window.

AVFC must complete Nketiah transfer

Aston Villa have been busier than most other clubs in the January transfer window in terms of bringing new players in, with the likes of Lucas Digne brought in on a permanent deal worth a reported fee of £25m from Everton as well as loan deals completed for Philippe Coutinho and Robin Olsen.

While there may only be a few days left until the window closes, Villa still have enough time left to end the month on a high note and bring one more player in that would really add some depth and extra quality to Steven Gerrard’s squad.

Having been mentioned with a move for Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah in recent weeks in a report from The Athletic by Villa journalist Gregg Evans, a late swoop for the 22-year-old could bring an end to the club’s latest period of spending and deliver Gerrard with an extra attacking option to his ranks.

Having racked up 69 goals in 154 club appearances throughout his career at Arsenal in their senior and youth sides as well as during a loan spell with Leeds United, the Englishman has shown he is capable of finding the back of the net when given the chance to play.

This, though, has not really been the case for the £9m-rated attacker this season, particularly in the Premier League with just four substitute appearances under his belt for Mikel Arteta’s team, showing that he’s not seen as much of an important player at the north London club despite being labelled as a “threat” in terms of his goalscoring ability by Aidy Boothroyd in the past.

With that in mind and the fact that his current contract at Arsenal is set to expire at the end of the season, this could convince the Gunners to sell him before the end of this month so they can get a fee for him if he doesn’t have any intentions on signing a new deal there.

Taking all of this into account, it could be worthwhile for Villa to try and work out a deal for Nketiah in the coming days to see if he could try and stake a claim in Gerrard’s side, which 68% of voters in a recent poll ran by Football FanCast would like to see happen as another potential transfer masterclass from the Midlands club.

Gerrard has also already shown his capability in the transfer market and bringing a hardworking offensive player with plenty of potential to the club from one of the biggest sides in the division would undoubtedly be a coup for the Villans.

With his fairly young age, the Arsenal striker could well become a future long-term replacement for Danny Ings who is considerably older than Nketiah and has only managed to score four goals in 17 appearances for Villa this season.

Leeds: Whites not in for Todd Cantwell

The Mirror’s David Anderson has revealed that Leeds are not pursuing Norwich City midfielder Todd Cantwell this month.

The Lowdown: Cantwell links

The Whites are thought to be after two midfielders during the January transfer window following an injury-hit season.

Victor Orta is looking to bring in both a defensive and attacking midfielder, with Cantwell reportedly on the Elland Road radar.

Described as ‘incredible’ by Dean Ashton for his role in Norwich’s promotion, Cantwell has made just five Premier League starts this season and is yet to contribute to a goal in 2021/22.

The Canaries have the option to extend his Carrow Road deal by a further 12 months in the summer, and it doesn’t seem as if a move to Yorkshire is on the cards over the coming weeks.

The Latest: Anderson’s tweet

Journalist Anderson took to Twitter on Monday morning to provide an update on Leeds and Cantwell.

This is what he had to say, revealing Leeds have shown interest in the Englishman, however, a move this month doesn’t look likely.

“It is also my understanding that Leeds have not renewed their interest in Norwich’s Todd Cantwell. Leeds have looked at him previously, but the midfielder is not a target for this window.”

The Verdict: Time is ticking…

Leeds could be without 11 players against West Ham this weekend and have limited options in midfield with Kalvin Phillips and Jamie Shackleton sidelined.

We are already over a third of the way through the winter window and there are no serious signs of senior arrivals, which is a worry. Cantwell doesn’t look to be a serious target this month, which shouldn’t be seen as a disaster following his poor form during the current campaign.

However, Orta needs to bring in at least one versatile midfielder before the deadline, and who knows, that could be the difference between relegation and survival.

In other news: Radz and 49ers may now finance Leeds move for versatile ace with ‘great acceleration’.
