Leeds: Should Klich play on Sunday?

Leeds will face another stern test on Sunday when they take on Leicester.

The Whites have won just once in 2021 so far while the Foxes are flying high in the top four of the Premier League. Therefore, Marcelo Bielsa should consider springing a surprise.

On the chalkboard

There wasn’t much to criticise from Leeds’ win over Newcastle in midweek. Though, if there was one area to be picky about it was at left-back.

Gjanni Alioski didn’t endure the best of outings and that was evident when he was hauled off with over half an hour left after receiving a yellow card.

The left-back was caught in possession and then to prevent a counter-attack, had to bring his man down. It was typically reckless from Alioski, someone who has proven to be a liability on more than one occasion this season.

He was torn apart by Dan James at Old Trafford last month and for every good performance the defender turns in, it seems to be followed by a succession of dismal outings.

The solution

There is one clear answer to Leeds’ problems here; drop Alioski. We’ve banged this drum before on FFC but if that happens it could give Bielsa a way to bring Mateusz Klich back into his starting XI.

The Pole sat out against Newcastle and thus missed just his second ever league game since Bielsa took charge of the Whites. Stuart Dallas started at his expense in the middle of the park but if Leeds drop Alioski, the Northern Irishman can slot in on the left instead.

As a result, Klich would be able to resume his place in the middle of the park. It would be surprising and incredibly rare for the manager to spring a tactical change like this. For starters, the Argentine doesn’t tinker or make changes unless he really has to, generally preferring to operate with the same starting XI’s. Secondly, his Polish enforcer has been a little out of form.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-this-weeks-latest-leeds-news” title=”Read this week’s latest Leeds news!”]

Speaking about the Poland international last week, Noel Whelan told Football Insider: “He hasn’t been himself for over a month now. He’s not doing too much. He is drifting through games and that’s worrying.”

That came after Whelan admitted that new recruits needed to be signed this month: “I think a central midfield player because Klich has gone off the boil, he seems to be drifting through games at the minute and not having that stamp on the game that he normally has, so I think we need more backup there and quality.”

That being said, Klich has played so many successive games for Leeds because Bielsa loves him so much. He might be out of form but being dropped from the XI last time out should have acted as a wakeup call and a reality check.

At the end of the day, he’s one of their most creative players and in 2020/21, only Jack Harrison (1.9) has achieved more key passes per match than Klich (1.8).

If we’re going by general assists, the latter tops the charts for Leeds this term. No player has created more goals (5) for his teammates than the Pole.

Thus, if Leeds are to have any chance of breaking down a tough Leicester defence, they need Klich, and they need him at his creative and effervescent best.

AND in other news, Leeds should unleash “very tricky” rarely-seen gem, Whelan thinks he’s “like Raphinha”…

West Brom have last laugh over Oli Burke despite eye-watering loss

West Brom broke their club-record transfer fee this summer, bringing loan sensation Grady Diangana back to the Hawthorns after an impressive temporary stint last season.

But the Baggies haven’t always had great success with their big-money signings – £13m signing Nacer Chadli failed to back up his price tag before being quickly moved on whilst Oliver Burke’s arrival was arguably the worst piece of business they have ever done.

Although, it’s now Albion who are having the last laugh on the matter.

At the time, he became the most expensive Scottish player in history as Tony Pulis brought him to the Hawthorns from RB Leipzig for a whopping £15m.

The 23-year-old winger would go onto play just 24 times for the Midlands outfit, contributing only one goal and three assists, via Transfermarkt.

During the past two seasons alone, he was sent out on loan to both Celtic and La Liga strugglers Alaves, though neither side wanted to take a punt in signing him permanently.

Instead, it was top-flight rivals Sheffield United who took that on that burden this summer, paying an “undisclosed fee” as well as sending versatile forward Callum Robinson, who also enjoyed a successful spell at the Baggies during their promotion-winning campaign, the other way.

However, The Star claim that Albion paid £3m plus Burke to secure the Irishman.

And so far, it’s turned out to be a masterstroke from Luke Dowling and co as Burke has failed to prove his credentials for the Blades this campaign.

Per WhoScored, the 6 foot 2 Scotsman has averaged just one key pass, 0.7 shots and 0.3 dribbles per game. He’s even managed a shocking 57.6% pass success rate, which ranks him third-worst in the entire league for any outfield player to start three or more matches.

In contrast, Robinson has already delivered two goals for Slaven Bilic – against Chelsea too – and is averaging more shots and dribbles than the former Pulis flop.

Considering Burke was raking in £30k-per-week at the club, Albion have done wonders in getting him off the wage bill and have delivered an outrageous coup in getting Robinson too.

The Baggies may have lost over £20m on him through fees, swaps and wages, but he’s now United’s problem meaning Bilic and Dowling have had the last laugh here.

AND in other news, West Brom may have uncovered their next Harvey Barnes, even if it’s a BAD sign…

Player Zone: Timo Werner to make huge statement for Chelsea against West Brom

Chelsea will hope that their 6-0 win over Barnsley will be enough of a boost to put them back into winning ways in the Premier League.

Frank Lampard has not held back in this transfer window in terms of splashing the cash, and his new recruits could bring him the success for which he is striving. However, reigning champions Liverpool have already put daylight between potentially one of their biggest challengers this campaign.

Chelsea’s loss to the Reds has set them back early on, but they will be hoping to rectify this with a convincing win over West Brom tomorrow evening.

One man who could be among Lampard’s key players is Timo Werner, who joined the Blues for £45m back in June. He has already opened up his Chelsea goal contributions record by bagging an assist in their opening league match against Brighton.

However, the 24-year-old was left out of the squad that ran riot against Barnsley in midweek. Tammy Abraham started in his absence and wasted no time in showcasing his prolific ability by assisting two goals and scoring one of his own.

Olivier Giroud also came on and contributed with a goal, potentially causing Lampard a dilemma over his attacking options (via Sofascore).

Werner’s outstanding return from last season of 34 goals in 45 appearances doesn’t give him a free pass into the starting lineup. With Giroud and Abraham clearly fighting for contention, the Germany international must do the same.

If Werner is selected as part of the starting XI, he will be hungry to find the back of the net – not just to help his side win three points, but to show Lampard that he is the man for the job this season.

The striker will not want to spend many matches on the bench and so he must prove to the manager why he is currently regarded as one of the best attackers out there.

Fulham need to get rid of Seri on deadline day

Fulham have a lot of work to do on deadline day.

The Whites’ Premier League campaign has got off to the worst possible start with four losses from their opening four games, and while incomings are absolutely vital for the Cottagers on Monday, one outgoing is equally as important.

Indeed, Jean-Michael Seri remains on Fulham’s books and with less than 24 hours remaining for the Whites to find him a new club, the clock is ticking.

To say that one of Fulham’s top priorities should be ditching a man who almost signed for Barcelona a few years ago sounds a bit strange on the surface, but if you’ve watched Seri since he came to Craven Cottage, you’d know exactly why he needs to go.

He’s reportedly on £65k-a-week, making him a huge financial drain, and he’s simply not good enough to forge a career in the Premier League, as shown by his shocking performance against Brentford in the Carabao Cup last week where he made a mistake leading to a goal and missed an absolute sitter against Championship opposition.

For £65k a week, you want a player who can make a huge impact, not a man who struggles against Championship players.

The Whites have had loan interest from both Galatasaray and Inter, but they’re prioritising a permanent sale rather than a loan move, but getting him off the books in any capacity is surely better than nothing at this point.

This could end up being more important than any centre-back deal that is concluded before the window closes, saving £65k-a-week on wages could give the Whites the financial power needed to bring their team up to the level needed to survive in this division.

Fingers crosses, Seri has at least one suitor lined up.

Wolves could sleepwalk into a nightmare with Douglas Costa

Wolves have often relied on the influence of super-agent Jorge Mendes, though their latest move could be a step too far this transfer window…

What’s the word?

According to Tuttosport, the Midlands outfit are a potential destination for Juventus winger Douglas Costa as he edges closer towards and exit from the Serie A champions.

They claim that Mendes is trying to bring the 30-year-old to Molineux as a potential successor to Diogo Jota, who departed for Liverpool last week.

Costa is currently valued at £18m by Transfermarkt having cost the Italian giants €40m in the summer of 2018. He’s thought to be on £190k-per-week wages, too.

Absolute nightmare?

Wolves have a lot to thank Mendes for, without him, there’s a chance they wouldn’t have signed the likes of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho or Rui Patricio and perhaps not even their manager Nuno Santo either.

But having lost a key star in Jota, his replacement certainly shouldn’t be a 30-year-old injury-prone misfit, especially when both Pedro Neto and Daniel Podence appear ready to fill that void.

The Brazilian winger started just seven matches in Serie A last season, scoring one goal and providing four assists whilst averaging 1.9 dribbles and 1.3 key passes per game, via WhoScored.

It remains to be seen how much he’d cost, but to even consider playing a fraction of his extortionate £190k-per-week wages would be one hell of a gamble from Jeff Shi.

Once labelled the next Ronaldinho for the way he “loves to play just behind the forward-line and loves to beat people with his exceptional skill and close control,” it appears his days at the very top are numbered.

“He’s a very strong player, naturally left-footed but can play on the right too. And he is ruthless and unstoppable when cutting in from the wings”

said Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu.

Having been described as someone who had “electric pace” whilst at Bayern Munich, it seems that injuries have very much caught up with him – he’s had eight different issues since his move to Juve alone.

Shi is on the verge of making a major blunder with this one. Costa must be avoided at all costs.

AND in other news, Wolves could land another defensive flop in La Liga outcast…

Arsenal: Emiliano Martinez might be offered new deal after impressing Mikel Arteta

Arsenal fans would have been worried as they saw goalkeeper Bernd Leno get carried off against Brighton in the first week of football returning.

It meant that Emiliano Martinez had to come in, but he seems to have impressed as there are rumours of him staying at the club for longer than planned.

According to The Mirror, the performances of the Argentinian have changed the Gunners plans for the upcoming transfer window as they wanted buy a new keeper in the summer; FC Barcelona goalkeeper Neto had been linked.

Martinez was considering his future because he wanted to play more games, but now Arsenal are willing to give him a better role at the club where instead of him being just a reserve goalkeeper, he will now be seen as a possible number one and can challenge Leno for his spot when he returns. The club have been so impressed that he might even be rewarded with a new deal.

Before Leno’s injury, the 27 year-old had only made six appearances in the Premier League, despite the fact that he has been at the club for ten years, per Transfermarkt.

This shows that he has been happy with the reserve role, and even though he has been loaned out during his Arsenal career, it shows that he has always wanted to try and fight for that number one spot at the Emirates. The fact that he is now getting a chance in the first team is something that supporters will like to see.

They will also love the fact that his performances have been pretty good as he has only conceded three goals in the five league games he has played in this campaign and has also kept three clean sheets, per Transfermarkt.

It seems only right that due to these performances, the Gunners should try to keep hold of him and it is good for all parties if he does stay beyond the transfer window. With the side aiming for Europe, they could have a lot of fixtures next year and Mikel Arteta will love the fact that he has two good goalkeepers if he did want to rotate them.

Chelsea: Blues handed major boost as Kai Havertz puts in a transfer request

Top Chelsea transfer target Kai Havertz has reportedly told Bayer Leverkusen he wants to leave this summer.

According to Bild (via Metro) the German star has handed in a transfer request amid huge interest from the Premier League side. Chelsea are allegedly willing to meet the £89 million asking price to sign Havertz and are the only side in a position to pay that kind of money.

Frank Lampard and Co have been linked to Havertz for some time now, but his future has been uncertain with the likes of Manchester United also very keen on him. Clubs are chasing the 21-year-old after his blistering 2019/20 season, tallying 17 goals and nine assists across all competitions (via Transfermarkt).

Due to the financial effects of pandemic, a lot of clubs are being forced to end any interest in potential big money signings this summer. However, with Chelsea coming off the back of a transfer ban, they aren’t afraid to splash the cash ahead of next season. The Blues have already signed Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner and are showing no signs of settling just yet.

Bild believe there’s really only one team left in this race and it comes down to who can afford Havertz’s mammoth asking price. With Roman Abramovich also personally contacting the midfielder, it seems Lampard has the green light to get his man.

Now Havertz has voiced his desire to leave Leverkusen, surely there’s only one destination he will find himself. The chance to play with fellow German international Werner will also be a huge lure for the 21-year-old. If club and player want each other, all that’s left is to tie up any loose ends and snap a picture of Havertz at Stamford Bridge.

Do you think Chelsea will sign Havertz this summer? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
