Debutant du Plessis stars in thrilling draw

Faf du Plessis would not have been playing in this Test were it not for JP Duminy hurting his Achilles tendon at the Gabba. And just as Duminy did on debut in Perth four years ago, du Plessis has grabbed his first chance at Test cricket to provide a remarkable result for the South Africans. At the WACA it was a near-record chase of 414 for victory; this time South Africa’s challenge was to bat for four and a half sessions on a wearing Adelaide Oval pitch to salvage a draw. Thanks to du Plessis, they did so. Thanks to du Plessis, the scoreline remains at 0-0 heading into the decider in Perth, despite Australia having had the best of the first two Tests. And thanks to du Plessis, Australia’s bowlers will have only four days to recover from some serious exhaustion, especially Peter Siddle, who sent down 63.5 overs for the match and was so debilitated by the time he bowled the final over of the match that he could barely stand up.Of course, it wasn’t all down to du Plessis. Early in the day, AB de Villiers played against type to score 33 from 220 balls without a boundary. Jacques Kallis again fought off his hamstring strain to provide important support in a 110-ball innings of 46. And Dale Steyn, Rory Kleinveldt and Morne Morkel did just enough to ensure that the No.11, Imran Tahir, would not be required. For South Africa, who will lose the No.1 Test ranking if Australia take the series, it was a draw that felt like a win.For Michael Clarke and his men, it was an opportunity missed. There wasn’t a lot more the Australians could have done, especially with James Pattinson’s injury leaving them a bowler short throughout the fourth innings. But there were some half-chances that they were unable to take, the kind of tiny openings that on a day like this must not be wasted. An Australian victory was still possible until the final over of the last hour of the match.By that stage, Siddle looked as if he’d just run a marathon. Somehow, he kept running in and his pace barely dropped, but Morkel was good enough to block out the over, which left South Africa on 8 for 248 when stumps was called. The score was irrelevant to the South Africans, who had given up on the chase of 430 on the fourth afternoon. Wickets were all that mattered. And a couple of breakthroughs in the final 40 minutes kept the contest alive.Steyn fell for a 28-ball duck when he chipped an inswinging full toss from Siddle to midwicket, where Rob Quiney snapped up a sharp catch. And Kleinveldt survived for 17 deliveries before he missed a yorker and was bowled by Siddle for 3. In the end, Siddle finished with 4 for 65 from 33 overes, but his herculean effort was more than matched by du Plessis, who ended up unbeaten on 110 from 376 balls. For any batsman, it would have been a magnificent innings; for a debutant, it was preposterously good. Most notable was the fact that du Plessis did not become overawed by the situation. He spent an eternity in the nineties but was not flustered, the team goal of survival overshadowing his own ambitions. When he eventually pushed two runs through cover off Ben Hilfenhaus and became the fourth South African to score a century on Test debut, after Andrew Hudson, Jacques Rudolph and Alviro Petersen, he acknowledged the applause and then settled straight back down to continue his job.The milestone took him 310 deliveries, but he was far from stagnant. He played his shots when the opportunity arose and finished with 14 boundaries. He was as calm as Duminy had been back in 2008; in fact, his effort was much more impressive because the conditions were tougher and nobody else in the line-up managed so much as a half-century. The Australians thought they had du Plessis twice in the first session, only to be denied on review. Both came off the bowling of Clarke, who drew positive lbw calls from Billy Bowden when du Plessis had 33 and again on 37. The first time, the batsman’s review showed the ball had pitched a fraction outside leg stump; the second time it revealed that the two noises Bowden had heard were bat on ball and bat on ground – the ball had not even struck du Plessis on the foot or pad.The Australians also used up their final review shortly before lunch when du Plessis, on 49, offered no shot to a Nathan Lyon delivery that pitched and struck him outside the line of off stump but was turning enough to interest Clarke. However, Eagle Eye suggested the ball would have bounced over the top of the stumps, and Clarke was left to consider how he would find six wickets in two sessions with no further reviews available. In the last over before tea, they had a chance when du Plessis edged Hilfenhaus and Matthew Wade, standing up to the stumps, couldn’t grasp the catch. Ed Cowan also put down a tough chance at short leg in the final session when Steyn clipped Siddle off his pads and the ball flew low to the ground, and they were the kind of opportunities the Australians couldn’t afford to miss.Cowan did complete a much easier catch in close when Lyon, who bowled 50 overs in the innings and 94 for the match, drew an inside edge onto pad from Kallis that popped up to short leg. Kallis had made 46 and given his injury, his effort was just as critical as that of du Plessis. De Villiers also played a key role until he was bowled by Siddle for a laborious 33 from 220 deliveries, an innings that did not include a boundary and was second only to Chris Tavare’s effort at Madras in 1982 in terms of the lowest strike-rate for an innings of at least 30 runs in Test history.De Villiers was happy defending and that was all South Africa really needed. They also required someone to stick around for the whole day, and du Plessis obliged. For the first time since 1921, Australia and South Africa had played out two consecutive draws. And for the second time this series, Australia saw a potential victory evade them. It all comes down to Perth.

Billings' ton sets new record

Sam Billings hit the highest ever one-day total by a Kent player at Canterbury and Darren Stevens snared five wickets

12-Aug-2012
ScorecardSam Billings hit the highest ever one-day total by a Kent player at Canterbury and Darren Stevens snared five wickets in 19 balls to ease the Spitfires to an emphatic 111-run win over Derbyshire. In front of their second best crowd of the summer, Kent wrapped up their 161st Canterbury Week with their fourth win of the Group C campaign secured with 56 balls to spare. Billings’ innings of 143 helped the hosts on their way to a score of 248 for 6, before Stevens took centre stage with the ball to help bowl out Derbyshire for 137.Batting first after losing the toss, Kent suffered two early blows on possibly the hottest day of the season at the St Lawrence ground. Home skipper Rob Key fell for a five-ball duck when he pushed tentatively at a Tim Groenewald leg-cutter to snick one low to Wes Durston at slip. Then, having faced only three balls, Sam Northeast also went without scoring when he departed leg before after playing across a full-length ball from Mark Turner that made it 16 for two.The situation might have worsened had keeper Tom Poynton held on to a diving, one-glove chance to his left from Steven’s first-ball glance, but Poynton could only parry the chance for four to allow the Kent right-hander to get off the mark.Stevens helped steady the Kentish ship with Billings in a third-wicket stand of 85 in 15.3 overs that ended when Stevens dragged one on to leg stump against Chesney Hughes to go for 40 and spark a secondary mini-collapse.Azhar Mahmood hit 8 before he holed out against Peter Burgoyne then Alex Blake, with three to his name, nicked a drive to the keeper off the same bowler to leave Kent in trouble at 123 for 5.That was the cue for 21-year-old Billings to move into top gear. He eased to his 50 from 46 balls then cut loose with an array of shots, the majority of which were orthodox, yet some were impish and improvised in the fashion of another wiry Kent gloveman, the legendary Alan Knott.Sweeping wristily, driving on the up and chipping the ball to all parts, Billings reached his first century for Kent, off a misfield to backward point, from 97 balls and with 11 fours. He really cut loose when in tandem with Geraint Jones as the two wicketkeepers added 117 in 14.1 overs. Billings was so dominant that his senior partner Jones contributed only 38 to their hundred stand. With 143 to his name come the final over of the innings, Billings went all guns blazing for his 150 but missed out with an attempted Dilscoop over fine leg to be bowled. He left to a standing ovation after 113 balls and with 17 fours and a six.Needing 6.22 an over for an unlikely win, Derbyshire were already up against it after a tight opening spell from Mark Davies of 3 for 25.Any lingering hopes were completely blown away when Darren Stevens replaced Davies at the Nackington Road End to bag 5 for 36 – including a 19-ball purple patch of 5 for 7 that eased Kent to victory.

Moeen knock sweeps Essex aside

Moeen Ali scored 99 as Worcestershire easily overhauled Essex’s 190 for 9 to win by seven wickets

13-May-2012
ScorecardWorcestershire carved out an emphatic seven-wicket victory against Essex in their CB40 match at Chelmsford. Replying to a total of 190 for 9, they reached the winning post with 6.1 overs to spare, as Moeen Ali followed up an economical spell of bowling with a magnificent 99 before he was dismissed with the visitors just eight runs from their target.Sharing the batting limelight with him was Vikram Solanki, the pair putting together an opening century partnership without looking in the slightest trouble. Indeed, they looked so comfortable it came as something of a surprise when Solanki was bowled by left-arm spinner Tim Phillips with the total on 104 in the 17th over. Solanki had struck seven fours when he was dismissed three short of his half-century.But Ali went on to underline his class before pulling Alviro Petersen into the hands of Greg Smith at deep midwicket.Earlier, Essex failed to make use of the solid foundations laid by openers Alastair Cook and Mark Pettini. They had put on 84 when, in the 17th over, Cook was run out after being called through for a single. Daryl Mitchell threw down the stumps from midwicket to bring the England opener’s innings of 47 to an end.Pettini went on to make 64 from 76 deliveries with the help of two sixes and two fours, at which point he was caught in the deep attacking off-spinner Ali to leave Essex 143 for 5. But either side of Pettini’s departure, the batsmen struggled to come to terms with some accurate bowling backed up by fine work in the field.David Lucas, James Cameron and Ali each displayed safe hands in the deep as Essex perished in an attempt to break free, with slow left-armer Shaaiq Choudhry being largely responsible for the decline of the innings. Medium-pacer Shantry picked up 2 for 48 in his eight overs, while Choudhry claimed 2 for 37. But it was Ali who proved the most economical, with Pettini’s wicket at a cost of 27 runs from his full allocation.

Warriors dominate as Haddin fails again

ScorecardBrad Haddin’s form slump continued with a fourth-ball duck•Getty Images

Brad Haddin’s difficult month became even worse when he was out for a duck on a terrible day for New South Wales at the WACA. Shane Watson showed some encouraging signs in his first match back from a long injury lay-off, scoring 21 and collecting 1 for 14 from four overs, but Western Australia dominated the day and by stumps had bowled the Blues out for 91 and taken a 67-run lead. But it wasn’t all good news for the Warriors, who lost their captain Marcus North to a finger injury suffered while fielding. The problem was so severe that North was likely to have surgery immediately and was ruled out of the rest of the match, but it didn’t seem to affect the Western Australian batting effort on day one. They finished at 2 for 158 with Liam Davis on 74 and Adam Voges on 37, having lost Wes Robinson for 31 when he edged Watson’s second delivery to slip. Shaun Marsh had also been taken at slip, where Steven Smith snared a screamer off the bowling of Trent Copeland, and his 14 was hardly the kind of innings he needed to press his case for a spot on Australia’s tour of the West Indies. Not that he was alone in that regard. Haddin has had a tough few weeks, fielding questions about his future while Matthew Wade makes his presence felt in the ODI tri-series, and his edge to slip for a fourth-ball duck off Nathan Coulter-Nile (4 for 20) won’t have helped his cause. Usman Khawaja was bowled by Michael Hogan for 15 and Phillip Hughes top scored with 28 before he was caught behind off Coulter-Nile.Watson had been the first man out, lbw to Coulter-Nile, and the wickets just kept tumbling. Nathan Rimmington collected 4 for 31 and the Blues were dismissed in the 45th over, their innings having included a spell where they lost 9 for 31 from 92 deliveries.

A round-up from the latest action at World Cricket League Division Six in Kuala Lumpur

Guernsey turned in a disciplined performance to beat hosts Malaysia by five wickets at the Kinrara Academy Oval in Kuala Lumpur in the World Cricket League Division Six, ensuring their promotion to Division Five. Malaysia, second on the tournament’s points-table after five games, also move up to Division Five. Apart from captain Suhan Alagaratnam, none of Malaysia’s line-up could get going after they chose to bat, and they managed only 170 for 9 in their 50. Alagaratnam made a patient, unbeaten 68. The Guernsey bowlers shared the wickets around, but left-arm spinner Jeremy Frith was the pick, claiming 3 for 16 in his 10 overs. Four of Guernsey’s top five batsmen then produced solid cameos – opener Lee Savident top-scored with 40 – to ensure the side got home without much drama and 26 balls in hand. The two teams will now meet in the finals of the tournament on September 24.Guernsey’s captain Stuart Le Prevost said the side had put in a fine all-round show in the tournament. “I think we’ve had a really good all-round week with both our batting and our bowling – Jeremy Frith has been great as usual, plus Lee Savident and Ben Ferbrache have also shown great stuff out in the field.” Malaysia’s Alagaratnam said the side needed to work on their batting. “We’ve played well this week but our batting has let us down in the last few games. Hopefully we can continue to improve and win promotion in February [during the Division Five tournament] too.”Kuwait eased to a five-wicket win against Nigeria at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur but were behind Malaysia on net run-rate, meaning they lost out on promotion. Kuwait’s chase was propelled by a solid opening stand from Irfan Bhatti and Abid Mushtaq. Choosing to bat, Nigeria’s total of 182 for 8 was built almost single-handedly through a 96-run partnership between Sean Philips and Olajide Bejide. Opening bowler Mohammed Naseer finished with the best figures for Kuwait – 3 for 20 with six maidens. Bhatti and Mushtaq then steered the chase, putting on 99 in 15 overs. While Bhatti was solid with 73 off 85, Mushtaq attacked, smacking 66 off 46 with ten fours and two sixes. A half-century partnership followed between Bhatti and Sibtain Raza, putting the game beyond Nigeria despite a flurry of late wickets.Jersey beat Fiji by 28 runs at the Selangor Turf Club in Kuala Lumpur but it wasn’t enough to take their net run-rate ahead of Malaysia’s. Jersey put up 247 for 6 after being asked to bat, driven by half-centuries from captain Peter Gough and Samuel de la Haye. The pair came together at a wobbly 102 for 4 and put on a century partnership to carry Jersey to a competitive total. Fiji’s top order all got starts, but none of them went on to play a long innings. The middle order failed to build on a steady platform, and Ben Stevens and Charles Perchard made inroads with three apiece to give their side a comfortable win.

'World Cup should have 10 best teams' – CA

Co-hosts Australia want the 2015 World Cup to be contested by the 10 teams that most deserve to be there.

Daniel Brettig20-Apr-2011

In heartening news for Ireland, Cricket Australia want the 2015 World Cup to be a meritocracy.•AFP

Co-hosts Australia want the 2015 World Cup to be contested by the 10 teams that most deserve to be there, and will state that position when the ICC reconsiders the tournament format at its annual conference in Hong Kong. The initial decision to simply allow cricket’s 10 Full Member nations, including the struggling Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, to take their places at the next World Cup without any kind of qualification process was met with global indignation. However the ICC president Sharad Pawar has flagged a reconsideration of the wishes of the Associate nations, including 2011 tournament bright sparks Ireland, meaning several possibilities are now on the table for the June meeting.”Our starting point on ICC Events has always been that qualification should be based on merit,” a Cricket Australia spokesman told .”We support moving to a 10-team ICC World Cup in 2015 and longer term, support moving to ICC World Cups which are 10-team contests based on merit, [like] the top 10-ranked nations in the world. The ICC has discussed reviewing the position on 2015 and we will be an interested participant [both as an ICC member and also as a co-host] in that discussion.”Options include an expansion of the number of competing teams from 10 to the 2011 model of 14 or the more likely choice of 12, or simply the addition of a qualifying tournament between the best two Associate nations and the stragglers among the Full Members. Such a solution is clearly Cricket Australia’s preference, for administrators have begun plotting the 2015 event with New Zealand based on a 10-team plan.New Zealand coach John Wright joined the already loud chorus asking for a qualification process for the 2015 World Cup. In an interview with , Wright said, “The World Cup has got to be about the world – they (the ICC) have to be sure they have got the ten best teams in it. No matter where they come from. Otherwise it’s a nonsense. Surely it doesn’t take eight years to sort that one out.”Wright cited Ireland’s example saying the team had been, a “revelation” in the World Cup, where New Zealand played the supposed minnows in a warm-up match. He said, “Ireland have shown they can knock over big sides. There needs to be some incentive for the (Associate) teams to get the opportunity to play in the World Cup.”During the World Cup, ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat had said that the ICC Board would meet in May to decide on the qualification format of the 10-team 2015 World Cup. Two days after the final of the 2011 World Cup though, the ICC Board announced that the 2015 tournament would include the ten full members with qualification coming into play only in 2019. Following criticism around the cricket world and a request by the Associates, the ICC has announced that it would “revisit” the decision to shut the Associates out of the 2015 event.Numerous Associate nations have also reacted angrily to the suggestion that a reduced field for the 50-over World Cup is effectively counter-balanced by the expansion of the World Twenty20 event to 16 teams. However CA remain certain that Twenty20 can be used to grow the game in developing countries, despite its lack of the subtleties available in Test and limited-overs cricket.”James [Sutherland, CA chief executive] has always argued that ICC Events should be assessed in the full context of the ICC World Cup and ICC Twenty20 World Championship,” the spokesman said.”In keeping the ICC World Cup tight [which is what fans want], it is on the basis that the ICC Twenty20 can be run as a tight event with, say, the top 16. Twenty20 offers the top 16 an ideal chance to develop, progress, develop international success and profile.”

Nadeem stars in Jharkhand's title win

A collective batting effort and a four-wicket haul from Shahbaz Nadeem sealed a title win for Jharkhand in their Vijay Hazare Trophy final against Gujarat at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Jharkhand celebrate their title win•MPCAA collective batting effort and a four-wicket haul from Shahbaz Nadeem sealed a title win for Jharkhand in their Vijay Hazare Trophy final against Gujarat at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. After opting to bat, Jharkhand were boosted by several useful contributions from their batsmen while Gujarat, in their reply, failed to measure up against a dominating bowling performance to sink to a 159-run defeat.Gujarat had been on even terms for a good part of the first half of the Jharkhand innings, as they dismissed openers Subroto Ghosh and Akash Verma, as well as Saurabh Tiwary, who’s been prolific on the domestic circuit and in the IPL, relatively cheaply. Jharkhand were 80 for 3 at one stage but two crucial stands in the middle order set up a challenging total of 255. Ishank Jaggi and Kumar Deobrat struck half-centuries and added 9 for the fourth wicket, in reasonably quick time, but Gujarat fought back by dismissing both in quick succession. But the lower middle-order swung the game again in Jharkhand’s favour, as wicketkeeper Shiv Gautam and Varun Aaron made quickfire cameos, putting together 51 in just 23 balls to ensure their team had the momentum going into the chase.Jharkhand needn’t have been wary of a strong reply, as Gujarat’s innings began poorly. Captain Parthiv Patel fell in the first over, followed by opening partner Avi Barot in the next. Manprit Juneja and Niraj Patel tried to revive the innings with a steady 68-run stand, but the innings fell apart not long after. Niraj was left to see the capitulation at the other end as each of the remaining Gujarat batsmen failed to offer any resistance. Nadeem, with his left-arm spin, grabbed four scalps and caused a run-out in a collapse where Gujarat lost eight wickets for 22. Only two batsmen in the innings reached double-figures, as the Gujarat reply lasted just 24 overs.

Kaneria spins HBL to second win

A round-up of the matches from the third match-day of the Faysal Bank One Day National Cup Division One

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Jan-2011Group ADanish Kaneria took four wickets in HBL’s big win•Associated PressHabib Bank Limited maintained their perfect start with their second successive win, a 155-run thumping of Karachi Dolphins in Rawalpindi. The match started badly for them as opener Imran Farhat fell for 1, but solid contributions from the rest of the top order and half-centuries from Aftab Alam and Hasan Raza pushed them to what looked a competitive 262. It proved much more than sufficient as Dolphins collapsed to 107 all out. Medium-pacer Fahad Masood did the early damage, taking three top-order wickets, before legspinner Danish Kaneria ripped out four wickets for 28 to confirm a big victory. In another one-sided match, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines crushed Islamabad Leopards by 109 runs at the Diamond Club ground in Islamabad. Opener Sohail Ahmed’s half-century guided SNGPL to a solid start but a slew of wickets left them wobbling at 157 for 5. The experienced Saleem Mughal stabilised the innings with a 55 that took them to 271. In response, Islamabad’s batsmen flopped with only opener Zeeshan Ali making it past 16. He went on to make 63, but hardly had any support as Islamabad subsided to 162 all out.The most competitive match in the group was the one between the table-toppers and the team at the bottom. Pakistan International Airlines kept a spotless record by picking up their third win in three matches, beating Rawalpindi Rams by 45 runs in Islamabad. Faisal Iqbal’s century was the centerpiece of PIA’s innings, with support from opener Agha Sabir’s 53 before a flurry of late hitting lifted PIA to 290. They seemed set for a huge victory when Rawalpindi slid to 61 for 4 but Rawalpindi’s middle-order put up some resistance, with Zahid Mansoor and Jamal Anwar helping them to 245 limiting the margin of defeat.Group BIt was a match that was decided by the how the lower orders batted. Water and Power Development Authority’s bowlers added some crucial runs while Multan Tigers’ last five wickets collapsed for six runs to hand WAPDA a comfortable 77-run win at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. Both innings had followed a similar pattern after Multan opted to field. WAPDA were struggling at 52 for 4 but Sohaib Maqsood launched a counter-attack, smashing 77 at more than a run-a-ball. After Maqsood fell caught behind, each of WAPDA’s last four batsmen made more than 10 to carry their side well past 200. Multan began poorly as well in their chase of 224, Kashif Raza ripping through the top order to leave them tottering at 39 for 3. Waqas Sharif did what Maqsood had done earlier, slamming eight fours in his 61 as Multan fought back. But Zulfiqar Babar nipped the recovery with three wickets, including that of Sharif. And Raza returned to clean up the tail as Multan were dismissed for 147 after having been 141 for 5 at one stage.Majid Jahangir’s maiden List A century was not enough to save Sialkot Stallions from losing to National Bank of Pakistan by 46 runs at the Jinnah Stadium in Sialkot. Jahangir and Shehzad Malik (67) had lifted Sialkot from a precarious position, almost doubling the score after they had slumped to 113 for 5 chasing a stiff 312. But their dismissals took the wind out of Sialkot’s sails, and they were soon bowled out for 265. National Bank’s Uzair-ul-Haq was the best bowler on both sides, taking 4 for 46. Half-centuries from Hammad Azam, Nasir Jamshed and Qaiser Abbas had earlier set up National Bank’s huge total. After opener Jamshed (75) had provided a solid platform, Azam (76 off 54) and Abbas (56 off 34) took the score beyond 300 in an unbeaten 114-run partnership for the fifth wicket.Half-centuries from Babar Azam and Shahid Yousuf and left-arm spinner Raza Hasan’s four wickets took Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited to an emphatic 81-run victory against Faisalabad Wolves at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad. The 158-run stand between 16-year old Azam (78) and Yousuf (76) formed the bulk of ZTBL’s score after they were inserted by Faisalabad. ZTBL were 219 for 2 at one stage, but left-arm spinner Hasan Mahmood took his best List A figures of 5 for 40 to restrict them to 269. It was young Raza’s turn to respond, and he grabbed 4 for 46 as Faisalabad lost regular wickets. All but two Faisalabad batsmen made double-digit scores, but none more than 33 as they limped to 188.
