George Dockrell, the Ireland left-arm spinner, has been named the ICC Associate and Affiliate Player of the Year. He was chosen ahead of three of his team-mates Paul Stirling, Kevin O’Brien and Ed Joyce, and Afghanistan bowler Dawlat Zadran.Dockrell, 20, was the leading wicket-taker in the voting period – between 4 August 2011 and 6 August 2012 – taking 43 scalps in ODIs, T20Is and the Intercontinental Cup, the ICC’s four-day tournament for top Associate and Affiliate sides. Dockrell plays county cricket for Somerset, captained Ireland recently in the Under-19 World Cup, and took 14 wickets in T20 internationals, the most by any bowler in world cricket during the voting period.”It’s great to win such an award and especially to be following the footsteps of an esteemed group of players like William Porterfield and Ryan ten Doeschate, and only at the age of 20, I feel very honoured,” Dockrell said after receiving the award in Colombo. “It has been a great year of cricket with I-Cup, U-19s and WCL Championship, and now the WT20, and I’ve been learning a lot to take into this tournament.”It’s good to be setting high standards, and hopefully I will keep performing well for Ireland in the future.”Dockrell became the second Irishman to win the prize, after Porterfield in 2009.

Rare full-strength squad likely for India

For the first time India have had a significant break between the IPL and their subsequent international series, and all their first-choice players are expected to be available for the Sri Lanka trip when the selectors meets in Mumbai

Abhishek Purohit03-Jul-2012For the first time since the IPL was inaugurated, India have had a significant break between the tournament and their subsequent international series. They will have had a break exactly as long as IPL 2012 before they play the first of five ODIs against Sri Lanka on July 21, and this has ensured players like Zaheer Khan and Virender Sehwag, who are prone to injury, have had sufficient time to rest and recover. All India’s first-choice players are expected to be available for the Sri Lanka trip when the selection committee meets in Mumbai on Wednesday.Member of Parliament Sachin Tendulkar’s case has become different from those of the rest in recent years, and having played only two ODI series since 2011 World Cup, he could decide to skip this one as well. Till Tuesday evening though, reports said he hadn’t ruled himself out.If Tendulkar does opt out, it would do away with the controversial rotation policy followed in the CB Series in Australia, when only two of Tendulkar, Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir were chosen in the XI. Sehwag’s absence had taken care of the same during the Asia Cup. If Tendulkar makes the trip, Manoj Tiwary, who has travelled half the world with the side without getting a game, could miss out after a lukewarm A team tour of the West Indies. The India quicks had a disappointing Asia Cup, but the availability of Zaheer and Umesh Yadav makes the weakest link appear far less so. Ashok Dinda could keep his place after a decent show in the West Indies with the A team and in the IPL.Whether the selectors persist with Rahul Sharma as the second specialist spinner, alongside R Ashwin, remains to be seen, given his unspectacular returns in the West Indies and the presence of an army of part-timers. Whether the selectors bring back Harbhajan Singh, who has been sidelined for almost a year and has just signed with England county Essex, also remains to be seen. The county contract, though, sends out a signal that they might have already made up their mind. The contest for the No. 7 spot began afresh in the Asia Cup, with Yusuf Pathan returning even as Ravindra Jadeja continued to retain his place in the squad after a poor CB Series. Yusuf featured in only one game in the series and didn’t get a chance to bat, so it is fair to assume that this round of the battle has only started. Yusuf, though, did have a woeful IPL, even more so than Jadeja. There is also the case for Irfan Pathan, who is nowhere near the bowler he once was, but did better than Jadeja both in the CB Series and in the Asia Cup.Team combinations apart, another thing to watch out for is the choice of vice-captain for this series, after the position was taken from Gambhir and given to Virat Kohli for the Asia Cup.A little over a month separates the Sri Lanka tour and the World Twenty20, which will be played in the same country. Given the disasters the last two editions of that tournament held for India, this series and the experience the combination that is picked gets could prove useful come September.

Our basics not up to scratch – Trott

England have just not got their basics right in the ongoing ODI series, batsman Jonathan Trott has said, while India are a much improved side to what they were during their tour of England

England batsman Jonathan Trott has said that his team have not managed to get their basics right so far in the ODI series against India. The visitors, he said, have lost key moments in the games so far, contributing to the 3-0 scoreline.”I just think we haven’t played as well as we did in England. Our basics haven’t been up to scratch. Things like big partnerships, fielding …” Trott told on the eve of the fourth ODI in Mumbai. “I think India have played well. They will admit they’ve played a lot better than what they did in the summer. But there are two games to go and a good performance in those games would give us a spring while going back.”I can’t pinpoint the exact reason [for England’s losses]. I think we lost key periods of the games or India played well in the key periods of the games.”Trott made an unbeaten 98 off 116 balls in the third ODI in Mohali, the main contributor in England’s total of 298. India, though, chased down the target with four balls and five wickets to spare. Trott said it was an improved performance by England, but it would have helped if he and Ravi Bopara had made better use of the batting Powerplay. “I think we played well the other night. Got a good total – I think 298 the other night is among England’s highest scores in India – but just could not get across the line.”I think Ravi and I could have pushed it a little bit. I think Ravi got out in the third Powerplay. So when we lose wickets, it puts the brakes on. Historically, we haven’t done well in Powerplays. We would be looking to do that right.”The spotlight has been on England’s on-field conduct – throughout the series the players have been agitated in the field – but Trott played down the issue. “Whichever XI takes the field, they are highly motivated to win,” he said. “I think guys get across very well. It just comes across differently on TV. We get the best out of each other. Sometimes you go out of way to do it, and things happen in the heat of the moment.”Trott said Ajinkya Rahane, who made 91 in Mohali, had the look of a fine player. “I played against him in the 2007-08 Duleep Trophy game [between England Lions and West Zone] and he got some runs against us. I always felt he’s a good player. He played quite well the other night.”Meanwhile, England are working out India’s spinners, he said. “They [Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin] are very good spinners – if you are a spin bowler playing for India, you have to be very good. I’ve been very keen on how to bat against them for three games in a row. Like with everything else, you need to realise [be aware of] every challenge. I think we are getting better and better against them.”

Leicestershire fold after Strauss's double

Leicestershire ended day two of their County Championship Division Two clash against Middlesex facing the prospect of an innings defeat

31-Aug-2011
ScorecardLeicestershire ended day two of their County Championship Division Two clash against Middlesex facing the prospect of an innings defeat after England captain Andrew Strauss claimed his maiden first-class double century at Lord’s.The visitors were dismissed shortly before the scheduled close for 193 in reply to Middlesex’s 496 for 2 declared, the highlight of which was Strauss’ unbeaten 241 off 344 balls. Led by Steven Crook with 4 for 45 and Tim Murtagh (3 for 41), the Middlesex attack made life extremely difficult for Leicestershire, who seem certain to be asked to follow on in the morning. The visitors began hesitantly, with Will Jefferson in particular struggling against the moving ball. Matthew Boyce cover drove Corey Collymore for four before despatching Murtagh to the fence at extra cover. However in the 15th over, having just driven Murtagh for four, Jefferson edged behind to make it 42 for 1.It took Greg Smith 33 balls to find the boundary. But in Ollie Rayner’s second over the 22-year-old sought to take advantage of the short distance to the Mound Stand, only to chip the ball up to Dawid Malan at mid-wicket.The visitors were 86 for 2 at tea, but that became 101 for 5 when Steven Crook picked up three wickets in 10 balls. James Taylor was bowled before, two overs later, Josh Cobb was trapped leg before. In Crook’s next over Boyce, who made 46 in 122 deliveries, had his bails trimmed by the 28- year-old allrounder to leave Leicestershire reeling.Ned Eckersley (28) and Wayne White (37) then added 50 in nine overs for the sixth wicket before Eckersley was caught behind off Toby Roland-Jones. Ten overs later White, falling away to the off side, went lbw to Collymore to spark another collapse, which saw Rob Taylor slap Murtagh straight to short extra cover, Nathan Buck edge to third slip and Matthew Hoggard lose his off stump.Earlier in the day, Strauss registered the highest score by a Middlesex batsman at Lord’s for 12 years as the home side bumped their first-innings total up to 496 for two, before declaring at lunch.Strauss took 40 minutes converting his unbeaten 184 overnight into a maiden double century, as Hoggard beat the outside edge of the England captain’s bat on a number of occasions. But in the 10th over of the day Strauss brought up the landmark with a crisply pulled four off Buck. His double hundred had come from 282 balls and it included 21 fours and two sixes.Malan played some attractive shots to move into the 40s, but, on 47, fell to a catch at slip off a skied pull. That ushered in Chris Rogers, who deposited both White and Cobb in the Mound Stand for sixes on his way to a run-a-ball 33.

Gavin Larsen, chief executive of Cricket Wellington said that the province hadn’t “paid above the odds” to secure the services of former Sri Lanka offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan.”He was very affordable and comparable to what the other key overseas players have received in New Zealand,” Larsen told the . Wellington have signed Murali for next season’s domestic Twenty20 tournament.”He’s a really good bloke and he loves New Zealand. He’ll bring his family out and he’s really keen from a lifestyle point of view, and keen to contribute on and off the park,” Larsen added.New Zealand’s domestic Twenty20 competition will run from late December through early January. Larsen said Murali could also play a one-day or Plunket Shield game if schedules permitted.Meanwhile, Jamie Siddons, whose coaching contract with the Bangladesh national side ended after the World Cup, remains in contention to become the next coach of Wellington after Anthony Stuart vacated the role at the end of the 2010-11 season. Siddons was interviewed on Thursday by Larsen, high performance manager Robbie Kerr, board representative Mark Heisenbuttel, captain and players’ association representative Grant Elliott and New Zealand Cricket (NZC) director of cricket John Buchanan.”I’m definitely keen to talk to them again,” Siddons said. “There’s a lot of things to chat about if they want me to do the job. We obviously need to agree on terms but I’m pretty comfortable, pretty keen to do the job.”I’m waiting to see what transpires with the Australian team and the fielding coach position, but that’s a fair way off yet and I’m not putting all my eggs in that basket,” he said. Siddons was Buchanan’s assistant coach with Australia.Siddons, however, remained non-committal over Wellington’s decision to sign Murali. “That’s good … well, I hope it’s good. I’ll have to think that one through. I probably have some thoughts but I don’t want to discuss them.”It wouldn’t put me off the job but it would be nice to be in the job and have some say in those types of appointments, for sure.”Larsen, though, felt the signing of Murali ahead of the coach’s appointment would not be an issue. “I certainly hope not. I wouldn’t like to think that any new coach would balk at Murali’s name,” he said.Larsen confirmed that former England batsman Matthew Maynard, who is being linked to the post of assistant coach with India, was also interviewed in the last week.

Ele me colocou fora do jogo, mas esperei minha oportunidade e agora sou titular novamente. Espero corresponder – disse o venezuelano durante entrevista coletiva.
