No skipping Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, says BCCI

The BCCI has made it mandatory for all domestic IPL players to appear for their domestic teams in the zonal leagues of the domestic Twenty20 championship rather than joining their franchises for IPL preparations. A circular explaining the decision has been issued to all 27 affiliates of the BCCI.The five zones will stage their respective Twenty20 league from March 30 to April 5. However, with the IPL set to start in the UAE from April 16, most of the franchises were hoping to get the players assembled for preparatory camps. While the West Zone league will be played in Mumbai from March 30, Central Zone teams will compete in Nagpur from March 31. North, South and East Zone leagues will start in Chandigarh, Vijayawada and Kolkata, respectively from April 1.”We have informed the affiliates that no player can skip the zonal T20s and join a franchise for IPL preparations instead,” Ratnakar Shetty, BCCI’s general manager – game development, said. While the move will bolster the state teams and avoid the IPL overshadowing the domestic T20 league, it will be a setback for the franchises. Following the full auction, most teams will enter the IPL with totally revamped squads. The IPL team coaches were hoping to spend more with the new players ahead of the tournament. “Ideally, we would like players joining us three weeks before the season starts,” an IPL team’s support staff member said. “But it would be good in a way that the players will be playing competitive games.”The state teams who will make it for the Super League for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, to be played in Mumbai and Rajkot from April 8, will have to do without their IPL players. The top two teams from each zone qualify for the Super League. “Most teams would leave for UAE around a week before the IPL starts, so we can’t make it compulsory for the players to play theSuper League,” Shetty said.

West Indies Women flounder in first ODI

ScorecardDeandra Dottin’s half-century brought West Indies close to a win in the first ODI•West Indies Cricket Board

A late flurry of wickets cost West Indies Women the first ODI as they went down by one run against New Zealand Women at the Sabina Park in Kingston.Poised for a win at 212 for 6, with 14 needed off 30 balls, West Indies lost their last four wickets for 12 runs to be dismissed for 224. The first of those four wickets was that of captain Merissa Aguilleira, who had scored a solid 43 and looked good to guide her side to victory. Her wicket was followed by the dismissals of Anisa Mohammad, out lbw to Nicola Browne, and Tremayne Smartt, stumped off Suzie Bates’ bowling. In the final over, with West Indies on the brink of a win, Browne effected a run-out to dismiss Shaquana Quintyne.West Indies had set up their chase well, guided by Deandra Dottin’s 66-ball 65. Dottin added crucial partnerships – first a 49-run fourth-wicket stand with Stafanie Taylor and a 74-run stand with Aguilleira that put West Indies in a comfortable position. Dottin’s innings included seven fours and a six but crucial wickets from Lea Tahuhu and Morna Nielsen gave New Zealand a chance to storm back into the game.Earlier, New Zealand could only score 225 in spite of having been in a strong position of 210 for 2. Having chosen to bat, Bates and Natalie Dodd shared a 65-run opening stand. Once Dodd fell, Bates added 95 runs for the second wicket with Amy Satterthwaite and put on fifty runs with Sophie Devine, while bringing up her fifth ODI hundred. Bates’ 110 came off 133 balls and included nine fours. New Zealand, however, lost their last six wickets for just 15 runs. Stafanie Taylor bagged four of the last six wickets, dismissing wicketkeeper Rachel Priest, Katie Perkins, Browne and Nielsen. Taylor finished with figures of 4 for 19 off seven overs.

Auckland win high-scoring thriller against Wellington

A round-up of the Ford Trophy matches on March 3

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Mar-2013
ScorecardKyle Mills’ six off the final ball led Auckland to a four-wicket victory over Wellington in the Basin Reserve. Wellington were put into bat, with almost all the batsmen getting starts. The middle order of Grant Elliot (45), James Franklin (59), Luke Woodcock (37), and an unbeaten 98 from Harry Boam, his highest List A score, all contributed to Wellington reaching an imposing 318 at the completion of their 50 overs. Kyle Mills managed to avoid the carnage with an economical 4 for 43.Auckland were able to put together substantial partnerships in reply, led by the openers Anaru Kitchen (36) and Tim McIntosh (58). Wicketkeeper-captain Gareth Hopkins played the anchoring role with his aggressive 117 off 98 balls. Colin Munro played a vital supporting role with his 44. Needing 13 runs off the final over, Ryder dismissed Colin de Grandhomme, who was looking threatening with his 31 off 17 balls. Mills was next man in, and after missing out on his first ball, was able to strike a six off the final ball of the innings to seal a memorable win for Auckland.
ScorecardGeorge Worker carried his bat through the innings to ensure Canterbury moved to second place in the table, as they beat Central Districts by 67 runs in Nelson. Canterbury elected to bat, but suffered a horror-start as opener Bradley Cachopa was dismissed caught-behind for a golden duck, followed by Rob Nicol getting caught by Will Young off Adam Milne. Worker and Henry Nicholls righted the ship with a 137-run stand for the third wicket. Worker was able to build substantial partnerships with Shanan Stewart and Andrew Ellis, as Canterbury finished with 280 for 4. Worker scored an unbeaten 129, his highest List A score.Facing a stiff target, the Central Districts batsmen came undone, as they were 57 for 5 through the bowling efforts of Ryan McCone and Matt Henry. Kieran Noema-Barnett and Ben Smith put on a 53-run partnership to help stabilise the innings. Once Noema-Barnett was dismissed, Smith and Tarun Nethula combined for a team-record seventh-wicket partnership of 94 runs. But they were simply delaying the inevitable as Henry and McCone returned to wrap up the tail. McCone picked up a maiden five-for, finishing with 5 for 38.
ScorecardNorthern Districts moved to top-spot in the table, with a 42-run victory over Otago. Northern Districts elected to bat and strung together regular partnerships, the top and middle order contributing to the cause. Daryl Mitchell top-scored with 52, and was ably supported by Daniel Flynn (34), Jono Hickey (32) and Jono Boult (39). Ian Butler has best figures of 3 for 45, as Northern Districts finished on 249 for 7.In the chase, Anurag Verma, Brent Arnel and Graeme Aldridge were among the wickets, as they kept Otago in check. Opener Wells scored a career-best 81 but didn’t have adequate support, as Otago were dismissed for 207 in 46 overs.

Warwickshire sign Hannon-Dalby

Warwickshire have signed Oliver Hannon-Dalby, the 23-year-old seamer, for the 2013 season

George Dobell14-Feb-2013Warwickshire have signed Oliver Hannon-Dalby, the 23-year-old seamer, for the 2013 season. He has been on trial at Edgbaston for several weeks having been given permission from his previous club, Yorkshire, to talk to other counties.Warwickshire’s strong bowling attack was a crucial ingredient in leading them to the County Championship in 2012. With the likes of Chris Woakes, Boyd Rankin, Rikki Clarke, Chris Wright and Keith Barker already competing for places, it may prove hard for Hannon-Dalby to win a first team place. But Warwickshire are keen not to over exert any of their seamers and aware that they could be weakened by England call-ups during the season. Hannon-Dalby’s current record is modest – he has a first-class bowling average of 45.06 after 24 games – but he is blessed with great height at 6ft 8in tall and claimed a five-wicket haul against Warwickshire at the start of the 2010 season.Warwickshire hope that he will benefit from working with the club’s highly-rated bowling coach – Graeme Welch – in the same way that Wright and Barker have done in recent seasons. Both men claimed more than 50 first-class wickets in 2012 having arrived at the club with equally modest reputations.”With Woakes, Wright, Rankin and Clarke all featuring in England’s winter touring squads, it’s essential that we’re prepared for more call-ups in the summer,” Warwickshire’s new director of cricket, Dougie Brown, said. “So Oliver is a great addition to the squad.”Whilst he’s struggled to consistently hold a place in the Yorkshire first XI, we recognise that his ability to swing the ball from such a great height adds something different to our pace attack. He’s working well with Graeme Welch and we hope he can continue to develop here in the same way that our current fast bowlers have.”Hannon-Dalby developed through the Yorkshire Academy and made his first-class debut in 2008. Despite a promising season in 2010, he struggled for opportunity in 2012 and has now been released from his Yorkshire contract a year early. He has played little limited-overs cricket and has few pretensions as a batsman. He will join Warwickshire officially at the start of March and will travel to Barbados on the club’s pre-season tour.”Warwickshire were outstanding in first-class and one-day cricket last season and whilst I’m sad to be leaving my home county, I’m very excited about the new challenge ahead and joining up with my new team mates,” he said. “The new facilities at Edgbaston are among the best in world cricket and we’ve got a great squad that’s capable of challenging for honours in all formats of the game.”With the support of the Warwickshire coaching team, Chris Wright and Keith Barker were two of the best bowlers on the county circuit in 2012 and I hope that by working hard in all areas that I can develop and enjoy similar levels of success to them.”

George Dockrell, the Ireland left-arm spinner, has been named the ICC Associate and Affiliate Player of the Year. He was chosen ahead of three of his team-mates Paul Stirling, Kevin O’Brien and Ed Joyce, and Afghanistan bowler Dawlat Zadran.Dockrell, 20, was the leading wicket-taker in the voting period – between 4 August 2011 and 6 August 2012 – taking 43 scalps in ODIs, T20Is and the Intercontinental Cup, the ICC’s four-day tournament for top Associate and Affiliate sides. Dockrell plays county cricket for Somerset, captained Ireland recently in the Under-19 World Cup, and took 14 wickets in T20 internationals, the most by any bowler in world cricket during the voting period.”It’s great to win such an award and especially to be following the footsteps of an esteemed group of players like William Porterfield and Ryan ten Doeschate, and only at the age of 20, I feel very honoured,” Dockrell said after receiving the award in Colombo. “It has been a great year of cricket with I-Cup, U-19s and WCL Championship, and now the WT20, and I’ve been learning a lot to take into this tournament.”It’s good to be setting high standards, and hopefully I will keep performing well for Ireland in the future.”Dockrell became the second Irishman to win the prize, after Porterfield in 2009.

Rare full-strength squad likely for India

For the first time India have had a significant break between the IPL and their subsequent international series, and all their first-choice players are expected to be available for the Sri Lanka trip when the selectors meets in Mumbai

Abhishek Purohit03-Jul-2012For the first time since the IPL was inaugurated, India have had a significant break between the tournament and their subsequent international series. They will have had a break exactly as long as IPL 2012 before they play the first of five ODIs against Sri Lanka on July 21, and this has ensured players like Zaheer Khan and Virender Sehwag, who are prone to injury, have had sufficient time to rest and recover. All India’s first-choice players are expected to be available for the Sri Lanka trip when the selection committee meets in Mumbai on Wednesday.Member of Parliament Sachin Tendulkar’s case has become different from those of the rest in recent years, and having played only two ODI series since 2011 World Cup, he could decide to skip this one as well. Till Tuesday evening though, reports said he hadn’t ruled himself out.If Tendulkar does opt out, it would do away with the controversial rotation policy followed in the CB Series in Australia, when only two of Tendulkar, Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir were chosen in the XI. Sehwag’s absence had taken care of the same during the Asia Cup. If Tendulkar makes the trip, Manoj Tiwary, who has travelled half the world with the side without getting a game, could miss out after a lukewarm A team tour of the West Indies. The India quicks had a disappointing Asia Cup, but the availability of Zaheer and Umesh Yadav makes the weakest link appear far less so. Ashok Dinda could keep his place after a decent show in the West Indies with the A team and in the IPL.Whether the selectors persist with Rahul Sharma as the second specialist spinner, alongside R Ashwin, remains to be seen, given his unspectacular returns in the West Indies and the presence of an army of part-timers. Whether the selectors bring back Harbhajan Singh, who has been sidelined for almost a year and has just signed with England county Essex, also remains to be seen. The county contract, though, sends out a signal that they might have already made up their mind. The contest for the No. 7 spot began afresh in the Asia Cup, with Yusuf Pathan returning even as Ravindra Jadeja continued to retain his place in the squad after a poor CB Series. Yusuf featured in only one game in the series and didn’t get a chance to bat, so it is fair to assume that this round of the battle has only started. Yusuf, though, did have a woeful IPL, even more so than Jadeja. There is also the case for Irfan Pathan, who is nowhere near the bowler he once was, but did better than Jadeja both in the CB Series and in the Asia Cup.Team combinations apart, another thing to watch out for is the choice of vice-captain for this series, after the position was taken from Gambhir and given to Virat Kohli for the Asia Cup.A little over a month separates the Sri Lanka tour and the World Twenty20, which will be played in the same country. Given the disasters the last two editions of that tournament held for India, this series and the experience the combination that is picked gets could prove useful come September.
