Jack Wilshere’s release would be easier to swallow if Loftus-Cheek came in

West Ham United are all over the place at the moment.

The Hammers’ transfer business has been less than inspiring, and after two defeats in their opening two matches, something has to change sooner rather than later.

Fortunately, the London club are being linked with some exciting moves, with reports claiming that they’re interested in loaning Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

This move would certainly bolster the Hammers’ midfield as the England international would add some much-needed creativity to what has turned into a rather flat XI.

However, West Ham do already have a player in this mould, in the shape of Jack Wilshere.

There are a lot of parallels to be drawn between Wilshere and Loftus-Cheek, with the pair being young creative English midfielders who have dazzled with their ball control and passing ability.

Unfortunately, Wilshere’s West Ham career may be coming to an end, with reports earlier this month claiming that the club are ready to terminate his £100k a week contract in order to cut some costs.

We’ve already argued that paying the 28-year-old £5.2m for the rest of the year is a risk worth taking for the club due to the fact that it’d be a tough task to find a player that talented for such a price, but in Loftus-Cheek they may have found that man.

If the Chelsea man is brought in for the season it would mitigate a lot of the risk attached to releasing Wilshere, as they will have a man who is amongst the England reckoning when he is fit and at his best.

Will it still be painful for West Ham fans if Wilshere goes on to excel elsewhere? Of course it will be, but if Loftus-Cheek performs how we know he can, that pain will be eased.

Spurs news: Mourinho might get second chance to land £90m superstar

Even though their season was not as steady and as straightforward as it usually is, Juventus have still managed to clinch another Serie A title at the end of 2019/20. But their campaign finished in flames as they were eliminated from the Champions League by underdogs Lyon, resulting in Maurizio Sarri losing his job as well.

Now the legendary Andrea Pirlo has taken over the Bianconeri but another problem looms: their wage bill is apparently through the roof and the Italians might be forced to sell some of their stars this summer. Which brings us to the latest report from La Gazzetta dello Sport that says Paulo Dybala is back on the market and Tottenham Hotspur might be given a second chance to snatch him away from Turin.

Of course, this is a story of old and the Argentine was close to making a move to the Premier League last year, having fallen out of favour at Juventus, but in the end, remained and thrived in the team instead.

The same source, however, claims that it would take around €100million (£90m) to snatch him away from the Italian champions. Manchester United are also mentioned as potential suitors but seeing how they are busy chasing Jadon Sancho and have already brought in Bruno Fernandes, the path is clear for Spurs.

This would indeed require Daniel Levy to open the warchest and spend more than ever before but Dybala seems worth every penny.

Will they finally pull the trigger? Only time will tell.

Verdict

It does seem like Spurs have an ideal situation here and all they have to do it spend some money. It’s almost impossible to get such high-quality players without actually spending the big bucks and therefore, Levy shouldn’t be afraid to invest this time around.

Dybala’s performances have increased his value once again but that also means Spurs would be getting an incredible player in return.

Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka proved his magic touch against Norwich

On the day that The Athletic journalist David Ornstein revealed that Arsenal are intensifying their pursuit of Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka delivered the kind of statement-making performance against Norwich that would have got people to sit up and take notice.

The Gunners ran out comfortable 4-0 winners over the Canaries on Wednesday night, and the Switzerland international in particular was in inspired form in the middle of the park.

Xhaka’s topsy-turvy relationship at the Emirates is well-documented, with suggestions that after his anger and frustrations boiled over against Crystal Palace, he would be off to Germany in the January transfer window.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

But in came Mikel Arteta to permanently replace Unai Emery, and the former Borussia Monchengladbach man hasn’t looked back since. In fact, after Wednesday evening’s result, the Gunners have remained unbeaten in the ten Premier League matches Xhaka has started and completed the game under the new Arsenal boss.

And against Norwich, he was outstanding. Aside from his well-taken goal in which he made a marauding run forward before sweeping the ball home with his left foot, the Swiss star controlled the game and dictated the tempo in the middle of the park.

As per Sofascore, he had 66 touches of the ball, with only Dani Ceballos and Sead Kolasinac having more, whilst his astonishing 96% pass accuracy (49 of 51 completed) was by far and away the highest of the team.

He also contributed with one key pass, one blocked shot and one interception over the course of the 90 minutes, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s decision to hand over the armband when he was being substituted, showed how full circle everything has come.

Speaking after the game, Arteta waxed lyrical over his midfield maestro, saying: “His commitment goes beyond anything normal. He’s a great example the way he lives this possession. I’m really happy we convinced him to stay and learn from the mistake he made.”

So whilst the Gunners seem to be exploring ways to bring Partey to the club this summer, Xhaka reminded everyone just how good of a midfielder he can be on his day too.

Van der Vaart’s Spurs career in pictures

Tottenham’s squad between 2010 and 2012 was full of talent.

Gareth Bale and Luka Modric are just two of the names that come to mind, but Rafael van der Vaart was pretty handy as well. In 77 games, he managed 28 goals and 18 assists and, overall, he was a joy to watch – and he was a real bargain as well.

Here, we walk you through his Spurs career with the help of five pictures.

Van der Vaart signs for Spurs

19 goals and 16 assists in the 2007/08 season for Hamburg saw Real Madrid make their move for the Netherlands international, with him costing them £13.5m. However, he failed to really make the grade at the Santiago Bernabeu, although he did manage 12 goals in 73 matches. It looked as though he was moving to Bayern Munich for £18m, but that fell through, leaving Harry Redknapp with the chance to sign him for just £8m. Already with 83 Netherlands caps at the time, he already looked like a bargain.

Arsenal nemesis

The former Ajax youth product was particularly a nemesis for Tottenham’s fierce rivals Arsenal. He only played against them four times, but he managed to score as many times.

The picture above is taken from his brace against the Gunners in their 3-3 draw in 2011, by which point he had already scored once before against them.

He also netted in Spurs’ 2-1 win during the 2011/12 campaign – his record against the Emirates outfit for Spurs stands at two wins, one draw and one defeat, not a bad return.

Partnership with Peter Crouch

Peter Crouch is a Premier League legend in his own right, managing over 100 goals in the top flight. He proved to be valuable to van der Vaart, as well. They played 31 times together during his time there, and eight of the 37-year-old’s assists were for the 6ft 7in colossus – that means that 44.4% of all of van der Vaart’s assists were for the former England international.

Crouch also created two of the midfielder’s goals as well – they worked well together.

February 2012, £22.5m valuation

It was in February of 2012 when his Transfermarkt value was at its highest – at the time, he was worth £22.5m. Only during a six-month spell at Los Merengues was that number higher.

In all fairness, it wasn’t his best month – he only played one game, and even that was a 5-2 loss against Arsenal – but his displays beforehand saw him earn such a high valuation.

Trophyless

Whilst he was a talent for Tottenham on the pitch, he was unable to lead Spurs to any silverware. They were knocked out of the 2010/11 Champions League by Real Madrid, were unable to make it out of the group stages in the 2011/12 Europa League, and couldn’t progress further than the third round in the League Cup.

The 2012 FA Cup was the closest they got, when they reached the semi-finals, but it wasn’t to be then either – they were hammered 5-1 by Chelsea at Wembley, with the picture above taken from that humiliation.

Leeds fans full of praise for Berardi after incredible performance against Hull

Leeds United fans on Twitter have been full of praise for Gaetano Berardi after he put in a dominating performance against Hull City.

The Swiss defender was an absolute rock at the back as he did a great job of marking the 6 foot 3 Tom Eaves as he won four aerial duels despite being shorter than the striker.

Berardi’s inclusion may have only been due to the fact that Liam Cooper was unavailable for selection, but if you watched the game you wouldn’t have thought it.

The 31-year-old filled in for Cooper with relative ease as United kept their 12th clean sheet of the season.

There really isn’t much more to say about Berardi’s performance other than that it was brilliant, and the fanbase’s reaction does it more justice than any stats ever could.

Unfortunately, Leeds fans may not get the chance to see Berardi too many more times as recent reports have indicated that he may well be on his way out of Elland Road this summer.

The defender’s contract is up at the end of the season and it seems as if he could be departing the club, but after his performance tonight it’s clear that certain members of the fanbase don’t want him to leave.

Meanwhile, we’ve ranked general election outcomes based on how they’d affect Leeds’ chances of receiving investment from QSI.

Leeds contract update is a bit of a mixed bag

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

As the January transfer window beckons, fans become more and more excited about the prospect of new arrivals at their club.

However, they also have to keep one eye on potential departures as players’ contracts enter the final few months before they’re able to move for free.

Leeds United have a number of key players whose contracts expire next summer, but we have just been given an insight into the club’s priorities when it comes to getting these deals done.

What’s been said then?

In a Q&A session for Leeds Live. Beren Cross revealed where Leeds currently are in terms of negotiating new contracts for four of their current playing staff. He said:

“Klich is the next one to be signed off. There is intent to get something done for Pablo too. Berardi seems to be the last man standing when it comes to 2020 expiry dates. Not heard anything on Alioski.”

Mixed bag

This update is a real mixed bag.

The fact that Mateusz Klich is seemingly set to be signed to a new deal is great news as he’s started every single league game under Marcelo Bielsa and is creating the highest number of opportunities, 2.3 each outing.

Find out what happened when a world-record-holding freestyler attempting skills with the worst pair of boots available on eBay in the video below…

Likewise, hearing that the club are wanting to get Pablo Hernandez tied down to a new deal is a promising development as the two-time Player of the Year winner is arguably the Whites’ most important player – something elevated by their run of just two wins from their previous five matches when he’s been out injured.

However, his updates on Ezgjan Alioski and Gaetano Berardi paint a more glum future as their situations don’t look like being resolved in the near future.

With rumours circulating that Ben White could be on his way back to Brighton, it may be key to get Berardi signed onto a new deal, and with Alioski becoming Bielsa’s first-choice left-back in recent weeks, tying him down to updated terms could be equally important.

All in all, this is a mixed bag, and only time will tell what happens with all four of these players.
