West Brom eye move for Newcastle’s Anderson

West Bromwich Albion are amongst the plethora of clubs interested in taking on Newcastle starlet Elliot Anderson next season, with the 19-year-old midfielder currently on loan at League Two Bristol Rovers.

What’s the story?

According to TEAMtalk, West Brom, as well as Middlesbrough, Coventry City, Reading and Stoke City, are interested in the young Englishman, who will be allowed to depart on loan again.

The current Gas loanee, whose side are two points off the automatic promotion places in League Two, has heavily impressed for Joey Barton’s side in the second half of the campaign, scoring six goals and registering three assists in 18 league appearances.

Now it seems as though the North East club are keen to allow the attacking midfielder to step up two divisions and go out on loan in the Championship next season.

Albion must swoop for Anderson

At just 19, Anderson has already received some serious praise, particularly from Rovers manager Barton who labelled the youngster as ‘the Geordie Maradona’.

The former Newcastle player also claimed: “Elliot has been brilliant for us from the first day we brought him in.

“I would have paid to watch him tonight, he was that good. He is growing into the shirt and his goal capped an outstanding performance.“Elliot is a huge talent. He excites you and tonight he showed a different gear to be the stand-out player on the pitch.”According to SofaScore, the £180k-rated maestro has been the Gas’ second-best player this term, averaging a 7.07 match rating, only bettered by Antony Evans’ 7.27.The 19-year-old currently averages 63.8 touches a match whilst having 3.3 shots and produces 32.2 passes at an accuracy of 78%.Although Anderson is playing fourth-tier football, his average league rating is only bettered by one current Baggies midfielder in Alex Mowatt, who has averaged a 7.10 rating. However, the Albion midfielder currently averages fewer passes a game at a lower accuracy with 30.7 at 76%, fewer touches at 55.7 and has scored fewer goals in a longer period of time with four in 34 matches. After a thoroughly disappointing first season back in the Championship after last season’s Premier League relegation for West Brom, Steve Bruce and co. will certainly have high aspirations for the next campaign. Therefore, whether signing a player with no second-tier experience will be worthwhile will have to be seen. However, there’s certainly an abundance of talent in the boots of Anderson and a loan move to West Brom could be the ideal next step in his development. Bruce would certainly love him.AND in other news: £10.7m wasted: WBA had howler over “absolute nightmare” who rinsed Peace for 147 weeks

Everton eye Burnley ace Tarkowski

Mark Douglas has now revealed some big Everton news involving both Farhad Moshiri and James Tarkowski.

The Lowdown: Centre-back wanted

The Goodison Park faithful have been linked with moves for the likes of Levi Colwill, Kim Min-Jae and Gleison Bremer in the summer, suggesting that they are after a new central defender.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They have one of the worst defensive records in the Premier League, and Jamie Carragher has even went as far as to claim that they have a ‘Championship back four’ during the embarrassing defeat at Tottenham.

Nonetheless, it is one area that the Merseyside club will surely look to strengthen.

The Latest: Tarkowski eyed

Writing in his latest piece for iNews, journalist Douglas has revealed that Tarkowski has now ’emerged’ as a potential target this summer.

Senior sources at the Toffees have claimed that there is ‘no way’ that Moshiri is going to sell the club, despite Russian links with Alisher Usmanov, and Frank Lampard can ‘expect to be backed’ in the market.

The Verdict: No-brainer

Given the fact that Tarkowski is out of contract at Burnley in the summer, he will be able to leave as a free agent, and so it would be a no-brainer for the Blues to sign him up.

Described as a ‘real leader’ by pundit Noel Whelan, the 29-year-old could be the organiser at the back that Lampard’s team need in order to be more solid and ship fewer goals.

Of course, he has plenty of experience of playing in the top flight, and so should be able to settle in fairly quickly.

MUFC’s fresh setback in manager search

Manchester United have been taking advantage of the break in the season with the World Cup qualifiers taking place to step up their manager search for the next coach to lead the club back to their winning ways this summer.

Unfortunately, they have just been delivered a huge setback with one of their most admired candidates.

What’s the word?

Fabrizio Romano revealed on Wednesday afternoon that Luis Enrique has given an update on his position as the Spain national team manager amid speculation that he could be lined up for the job at Old Trafford this summer.

Romano tweeted: “Luis Enrique is understood to be only focused on Spain, nothing else. He’s lots of admirers in Man United board but it’s described as ‘more than complicated’.”

Glazers will be fuming

If the report from Romano is to be believed, there is no doubt that the Glazers will be fuming that they are struggling to tempt Enrique from his international job with Spain, especially when it is said that he has a lot of admirers on the Man United board.

Thus, it will clearly be a growing frustration for the owners and the club, who are still yet to make a decision.

Enrique is believed to be amongst Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino as front runners for the highly anticipated role, taking over from interim boss, Ralf Rangnick, at Old Trafford this summer. There is a huge project in place to revive the club back to their best, winning trophies after they have now fallen into their longest trophy drought in 40 years.

The 51-year-old manager is a proven winner which we saw throughout his time as Barcelona manager winning a Champions League, Club World Cup and two La Liga titles during his three-year tenure at the Spanish club.

Winning major trophies is something that Manchester United are surely desperate to achieve in the future, and Enrique clearly has the credentials and experience to bring those successes back to Old Trafford. So with that being said, they will either have to settle in defeat or make a more lucrative and tempting offer that the Spanish manager will struggle to refuse.

Gerrard drops Leon Bailey injury update

After managing to snatch a point from being 2-0 down against Manchester United in their latest Premier League match that ended in a 2-2 draw thanks to second-half goals from Jacob Ramsey and Philippe Coutinho, Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa side are currently sat in 13th place in the league table with 23 points from 20 games.

Looking ahead to the second half of the season, it seems as though Gerrard may not have to wait much longer to have one of his squad options back to full fitness, which will surely please a lot of fans at Villa Park.

What’s the news?

In a recent report from Birmingham Live, Villa winger Leon Bailey is set to make a return to action next month after being out of action with a thigh injury he picked up during Villa’s 2-1 defeat against Manchester City back in early December.

On the subject of Bailey, the report quotes Gerrard as saying that the Jamaican international is “progressing well with his rehab,” which should be a big positive for everyone at the Midlands club.

Villa signed the 24-year-old back in the previous summer transfer window from German club Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth a reported fee of £25m.

Since then, the winger has made nine appearances for Villa in the Premier League, scoring one goal and providing two assists in the process, with the first assist coming on his Villa debut during their 3-2 defeat against Watford at the start of the season, showing what a useful attacking option he can be for the team when he’s fit.

Moving forward, if Bailey can get back to full fitness as soon as possible and stay fit for the remainder of his debut campaign at Villa, he could certainly have a big say in whether the team finishes in the top half of the table or not if he manages to add some more goals and assists to his record.

This would surely not only delight a lot of Villa fans but prove to the likes of Johan Lange, Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris why they were to right to launch a move for Bailey in the first place.

Sky reporter drops Coutinho to Spurs news

Speaking live on Sky Sports (via Football Daily), reporter Rob Dorsett has shared some ‘breaking’ Tottenham Hotspur transfer news involving Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye Coutinho move?

According to some reports over this last week, the La Liga attacker is firmly on Tottenham’s radar as transfer chief Fabio Paratici aims to back manager Antonio Conte in the winter market.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, Mundo Deportivo first claimed that the Brazil international ‘would choose’ a move to north London over fellow suitors Newcastle United.

Soon after, El Nacional shared an update that Spurs are willing to table a £16.7 million bid to sign Coutinho this month as Barca president Joan Laporta seeks a buyer, even adding that the Catalan giants may be forced to cash in due to their financial troubles and the fact nobody will meet their asking price.

The Latest: Sky reporter shares live TV news…

Now, as per Dorsett, speaking on Sky Sports (via Football Daily), there has been an update as the reliable broadcaster’s journalist backs Tottenham’s interest with what he’s been told on Thursday.

Shedding light on the alleged six Premier League sides eyeing a move for the 29-year-old, he explained:

“A bit of breaking news for you, if you like, we’re still checking this one out, but Arsenal, Spurs and Newcastle I’ve been told this morning are three clubs amongst those six that are also interested in Philippe Coutinho.”

The Verdict: Get it done?

It is no secret that Spurs have missed Christian Eriksen’s influence as a playmaker since his 2020 departure to Inter, so it is no surprise to us that the Lilywhites are weighing Coutinho.

The South American is a proven player in the English top flight, having enjoyed a prolific spell at Liverpool before his switch to La Liga, and we believe he could genuinely be an astute purchase depending on Barca’s and Coutinho’s demands.

His £380,000-per-week wages could be a stumbling block but Laporta’s eagerness to shift the player could gift Tottenham an advantage in negotiations as they have already been linked with a cut price offer.

This will certainly be interesting to follow but, if Paratici can get it done, it would be a real boost for Conte, adding a player who has racked up 41 goals and 37 assists in 152 previous Premier League appearances.

Newcastle make second Sven Botman bid

An exciting update has emerged regarding Newcastle United’s pursuit of Lille defender Sven Botman and their attempts to sign him this month…

What’s the talk?

Journalist David Ornstein has dropped a big claim on the Magpies’ efforts to bring in the 21-year-old from the Ligue 1 outfit, having had one bid rejected already.

He tweeted: “EXCL: Newcastle submit improved offer to Lille for Sven Botman. 21yo is #NUFC’s top centre-back target. Unclear how #LOSC will respond as want to keep but financial situation could make sale necessary if price right. Dutchman keen on move.”

Fans will be delighted

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe will surely be delighted with this update, as it shows that the club are working hard behind the scenes to get him the players that he needs to keep the team in the Premier League. They have not been deterred by a first offer being rejected and have now gone in with another bid, although it remains to be seen whether or not it will be enough to convince Lille to do business.

The Netherlands defender could be an excellent addition to the Magpies’ squad. He has averaged an impressive SofaScore rating of 7.02 in Ligue 1 this season, showing that he can produce consistently high-quality performances in a top division. This suggests that he could be a reliable performer for the former Bournemouth coach to call upon at the back if he is able to adapt to English football..

Ornstein’s claim that Botman is interested in the move will also leave Howe buzzing. It suggests that the player is keen to make the transfer happen and is motivated to come to the Premier League and perform for the Magpies, rather than being someone who needs to be convinced to make the switch and whose heart may not be fully in it.

Newcastle need players who are committed to the cause and ready to battle on the pitch because the table does not make for great reading. They are 19th in the Premier League and need an upturn in results to bring themselves out of the bottom three and secure top-flight safety.

Therefore, Botman being keen on the move could be a huge boost for the Magpies, as it suggests that he is up for the fight and is not deterred by the prospect of a relegation battle.

Celtic: Hoops keen on Paddy McNair

Celtic and West Ham United have both been linked with a move for Northern Ireland defender Paddy McNair, The Northern Echo report.

The Lowdown: McNair profiled

McNair is 26 years of age and is primarily a centre-back who can also turn out as a holding midfielder. A 49-cap international, McNair has been with Championship side Middlesbrough since 2018, making 133 appearances for the club.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-19/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high Transfermarkt valuation of £5.4m and has contributed to five Championship goals this season.

Celtic are after three Japanese January signings in Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi and Daizen Maeda, while they are also expected to make Jota’s loan permeant. Football Scotland believes that could be all of their January business, but it seems as if the Hoops may have room to swoop for McNair as well.

The Latest: Hoops keen

The Northern Echo shared a story on Wednesday regarding McNair and his future ahead of the January window.

They claimed that both the Hoops and the Hammers are monitoring his situation at The Riverside, with Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder keen to keep hold of McNair in the New Year.

The Verdict: Avoid?

Ange Postecoglou already has plenty of centre-backs on the books at this moment in time, so a move for McNair doesn’t appear to be desperately needed.

Christopher Jullien will be Postecoglou’s sixth option at the back when he returns from injury, and the Hoops boss also has a number of defensive and central midfield options, especially with Hatate and Ideguchi on the radar.

McNair was also pictured wearing a Rangers scarf outside Ibrox back in 2019, so his name may not exactly be a popular one with Celtic supporters, so it could be wise to allow West Ham to win the race for his services.

ICC quandary over Nepal disturbances

The ICC faces a tough call when it has to decide what to do following crowd trouble in the match between Nepal and USA

Martin Williamson10-Mar-2010The ICC has dismissed criticism it was too slow to react to the crowd trouble which marred the match between Nepal and USA in Kirtipur in the ICC World Cricket League Division 5 tournament. In the immediate aftermath of the serious disturbances, Singapore lodged a complaint with the ICC, claiming they and not Nepal should have qualified for the final, and in turn promotion to Division 4 of the tournament. At the time the USA-Nepal match was suspended, Nepal were facing elimination on net run-rate (NRR), but they edged through after USA were set a revised Duckworth-Lewis target which slightly but crucially improved Nepal’s NRR and enabled them to squeeze out Singapore. The ICC was roundly attacked for its seemingly slow response, not announcing an investigation until two days after the end of the tournament, but it has told Cricinfo the process was started in the immediate aftermath of the game.An ICC spokesperson said the technical committee on duty in Nepal had followed the playing conditions and that at the time the situation regarding NRR could not have been a factor in their decision over the conclusion of the match. Furthermore, Singapore did lodge a complaint with the committee on the evening of the game but at that stage the result could not have been changed.”The ICC immediately launched an investigation into the security incident on the night of February 26 and followed all ICC protocols on the matter including the filing of report to ICC headquarters,” the spokesperson said. “The technical committee also held a meeting the evening of February 26 in regards to security for the following day’s matches.”In regards to the security issue this is being investigated externally following the Rules and Regulations of the ICC. As to the internal investigation that is now being conducted, this was instigated once the ICC Event manager and staff had returned to headquarters and completed a tournament debrief.”The next stage is the findings of the investigation will be delivered to the board who will deliberate what to do when they meet in Dubai in April.”There are two elements to what the panels can do,” the spokesperson said. “As regards the security aspect of the investigation (that goes to the external investigator/commissioner) under ICC Rules and Regulations sanctions can be imposed on a host nation, in this case Nepal, if the commissioner finds that a breach of the rules and regulations.”As regards the internal investigation, the ICC head of legal, David Becker, will no doubt make recommendations to the ICC board on the panel’s findings and these recommendations will be considered by the board.”Nepal have every reason to be worried that their on-field success allied to remarkable crowds which flocked to see them might be undermined by the behaviour of an admittedly significant number of their supporters. Singapore, meanwhile, appear to have the sympathy of many Associate countries, while the USA can rest easy as whatever the outcome, their promotion will stand. As for the ICC, it is in a difficult position. If it fails to act then there is a danger it sets a precedent for crowds to disrupt matches if doing so will benefit their side. Against that, it will not want to stamp down to heavily on a country where cricket has really taken hold.
