Gold drops Spurs claim on Paratici

Speaking in a football.london Q&A, reliable correspondent Alasdair Gold has dropped a behind the scenes Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving Fabio Paratici.

The Lowdown: Paratici and Spurs

While Tottenham weren’t able to get former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte through the door, sporting director Fabio Paratici is now set for a big role in north London.

Indeed, reports in the Athletic and the Telegraph believe that the 48-year-old will have a major say on footballing matters including Spurs’ manager search and both incoming/outgoing transfers.

The Latest: Gold drops behind-scenes transfer claim

Speaking in a Q&A, football.london correspondent Gold has backed the reports while dropping an enticing claim involving Paratici.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news/” title=”Spurs latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As explained, the journalist believes that he has already commenced work in north London on outgoings as Spurs attempt to bolster Tottenham’s finances for possible signings this summer.

“Paratici is working already on potential transfers out to create funds for signings,” Gold stated when asked if Spurs have deals lined up and ready to go.

“The good thing about a director of football structure is that it creates the continuity and the squad and the head coach comes in to coach that.

“Of course certain players can be tailored to different types of head coaches but ultimately you choose a head coach that fits the club and target rather than randomly going after contrasting managers – yes, exactly as Tottenham have done this summer.”

The Verdict: Good news…

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, Spurs will need to adopt a sell-to-buy policy and operate within their means.

News of Paratici’s immediate hustle behind the scenes will come as a boost for the club given the transfer window is now open and Tottenham will want to operate as quickly as possible.

The priority, of course, is appointing a new manager at N17 but laying the groundwork for summer deals is arguably just as crucial.

Spurs ended up finishing seventh last season in what was a disappointing campaign and supporters will be hoping Paratici can build the foundations for a much stronger 2021/2022, regardless of who leads the side from the dugout.

Pundit says West Ham target similar to duo

Barry Fry insists Ivan Toney is the missing piece of West Ham United’s jigsaw, having seen the Brentford ace fire his side into the Premier League.

Toney enjoyed a stunning season in the Championship in 2020/21 and capped it with a goal in the play-off final over the weekend, as the Bees beat Swansea City 2-0 at Wembley.

The former Newcastle United ace scored 31 goals and registered 10 assists in 45 games and will be champing at the bit to take on Premier League defences next season.

The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a potential exit from the club in recent weeks and the Hammers have been touted as a potential landing spot.

It remains to be seen, of course, if the Irons will be able to convince Brentford to sell Toney now that they have confirmed their promotion to the Premier League.

But Fry has revealed that he told David Sullivan to buy Toney when he was playing for Peterborough United, before he was sold to Brentford for a fee of up to £10m.

Asked about him potentially moving to the Irons and if he is the player they lack, Fry, who worked closely with Toney at Posh, told Football FanCast: “He [Moyes] has got a couple of Championship players, one he bought from Brentford (Said Benrahma) and the other boy, he bought from Hull (Jarrod Bowen), and they’ve been tremendous, they’re young, they’re hungry, they want to listen, they want to learn and Ivan Toney’s that as well.”

Youngest LOI Centurians

The 2001-02 West Indies tour to Pakistan was shifted to Sharjah and during the second ODI played on 15 February 2002, Shoaib Malik at the age of 20 years and 14 days became the fifth youngest centurian in ODI’s. It was Malik’s first and overall, the 89th ton by any Pakistani player in limited over international cricket.Just for the record, Shahid Afridi, for his fastest 37-ball ton at the age of 16 years and 217 days, still remains the youngest, followed by Imran Nazir and Saleem Elahi. Afridi is also the only player to score two ODI tons before his 19th birthday. Pundit urges Bertrand to join Leicester

Earlier this month Southampton announced that Ryan Bertrand would be leaving the club when his contract expires this summer and former Leicester City defender Steve Howey has urged the left-back to join the Foxes.

Bertrand joined the Saints in 2015 when he left Chelsea having won both the Champions League and Europa League with the Blues, and he may leave with a heavy heart having made 240 appearances on the south coast.

Since the news broke that the former England international would be leaving the Saints, he has been heavily linked with a move to both Arsenal and Leicester with the two clubs experiencing very different fortunes this season.

Howey believes that if he wants the bright lights and money then go to London, but for footballing reasons he has to pick the Foxes – something he explained exclusively to Football FanCast:

“I think Leicester is a fantastic club at the minute and you just look at the squad and it appears that they are a close-knit group so for me, I would pick them.

“It always sounds better when you tell people you played for Arsenal instead of Leicester, but Leicester is a fabulous club with an unbelievable owner, very good manager and they have some top players.”

The Foxes managed to finish higher in the Premier League than Arsenal so if Bertrand was to join the Gunners then he would not be experiencing any European football for at least one season.

Left-back appears to be more of a problem area for Mikel Arteta as he has often wanted to deploy number one full-back, Kieran Tierney, as a third centre back so having Bertrand at the club could help him do that on a more regular basis.

Clarke-Harris can be Jokanovic’s next Mitro

Sheffield United have been linked with a move for Jonson Clarke-Harris recently and he could prove to be Slavisa Jokanovic’s next Aleksandar Mitrovic at Bramall Lane.

According to Yorkshire Live, Sheffield United are keen on signing the Peterborough United man this summer after his superb campaign in League One this season, which helped the Posh earn promotion back to the Championship.

The former Bristol Rovers man, who joined Darren Ferguson’s side in the summer as a replacement for the outgoing Ivan Toney, would score 31 goals in 45 League One appearances, winning the Golden Boot and the Player of the Season award.

Therefore, it is no surprise to see him attracting interest ahead of the summer transfer window, especially after former Peterborough United chairman Barry Fry hinted that the London Road Stadium outfit may be forced to cash in on him.

If he were to join, then he could prove to be a real focal point in Jokanovic’s side next season in the mould of Mitrovic, who featured as a target man under his Serbian compatriot at Fulham.

During his time in charge at Craven Cottage, Mitrovic would make 33 appearances and contribute an impressive 17 goals, which helped them earn promotion to the top-flight through the playoffs.

With Ollie McBurnie looking likely to leave this summer, Sheffield United will arguably need a new target man to fill the void and play a role similar to Mitrovic at Fulham, and Clarke-Harris could be the ideal man.

His 4.9 aerials won per game would rank him second at Sheffield United this season behind only McBurnie, whilst his 2.9 shots per game in League One is comfortably more than any other Blades player.

Under Jokanovic in the 2017/18 season, Mitrovic would average 4.1 aerial duels won per game and 4.1 shots per game, which certainly suggests that the Serbian manager can have a lot of success with an effective target man who is also deadly in front of goal.

Therefore, Sheffield United should definitely consider bringing in the “brilliant” Clarke-Harris this summer, as he could be the natural goalscorer that the Blades are missing and could help kickstart the Jokanovic regime.

Flamengo vence o Santos e assume a segunda colocação do Brasileiro

Jordan Pickford ‘doesn’t see criticism’

Jordan Pickford continued his excellent form as Everton beat Arsenal on Friday night.

The Toffees’ 1-0 victory was their first away to Arsenal since 1996, but Gabriel Martinelli looked to snatch a point for the Gunners in injury time only to be brilliantly denied by Pickford.

Journalist Josh Bunting remarked after the match that Pickford had been ‘top class’ during the second half of the season. The former Sunderland ‘keeper is ‘playing with confidence and he’s more commanding of the box overall’, Bunting added.

Pickford ‘doesn’t see the criticism’

Back in October, Pickford was engulfed in ‘hysteria’ after his challenge on Virgil van Dijk in the Merseyside Derby.

The Englishman’s lunge resulted in the Reds’ centre-half sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury which looks to have ended his season. Pickford escaped any form of punishment for the tackle.

According to The Athletic’s Greg O’Keefe, though, Pickford went through a ‘difficult period’ personally in the wake of the episode, but in large part, he’s been able to ignore his critics.

Pickford ‘takes little interest in Twitter generally’, O’Keefe writes, ‘and simply does not see much of the criticism he receives there, or the applause’.

The 27-year-old is battling with Manchester United’s Dean Henderson and Burnley’s Nick Pope for the England no. 1 spot at the European Championships.

Transfer Tavern verdict

Pickford has indeed been quietly impressive in recent months. He’s rarely looked so assured, evidenced by the fact he has made just two errors leading to goals this term, less than his previous campaign and less than Liverpool’s Alisson in the current season, via Kickest.

You wonder if he’s a player who’s benefitted from the absence of supporters in stadiums because the pressure is reduced, given he has often been sucked into engaging with the crowd in the past, such as at St. James’ Park.

Shutting out the social media noise can only help in that respect, and one can only hope he keeps his cool once supporters are back.

In other news, this defender is expected to be sold in the summer.

Celtic: Update in Kyle Joseph transfer hunt

Newcastle United are leading Celtic in the race to sign Wigan Athletic striker Kyle Joseph.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who claimed that the teenager’s representatives held talks with the Hoops back in February ahead of a potential pre-contract agreement.

Newcastle’s greater offer

However, it seems as if St James’ Park is a more likely destination for the 6ft 1in forward, with the Magpies stepping in with a greater offer.

Celtic could have paid a compensation package of just £230,000 for the 19-year-old, but Newcastle are willing to pay around £850,000 to try and force through a move.

Joseph has scored five goals in 14 League One games this season, with three of those coming in a 4-3 win over Burton Albion back in December.

Transfer Tavern take

In the long run, this latest development could prove to be a blow.

Celtic have already secured a pre-contract agreement with Sheffield Wednesday’s Liam Shaw, with the Hoops looking to target UK-based prospects with high upside potential on a pre-contract or for a nominal fee.

Joseph appears to fit that mould, but it seems as if Celtic could well miss out on the Wigan ace following this latest development.
