O jogo

India 2-0 after spinners thrive

India channelled the spirit of their unlikely Champions Trophy victory in England last year to spin out England for 227, before chasing it down easily

The Report by Siddarth Ravindran30-Aug-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsIndia channelled the spirit of their unlikely Champions Trophy victory in England last year – the fielding was near world-class and the spinners were outstanding – to leave team director Ravi Shastri clapping in approval midway through the third ODI at Trent Bridge. The batsmen then followed up with an assured performance that never allowed England a serious chance of defending a modest target, and put India 2-0 ahead in the series. The turn from the track made the conditions seem alien for England, and a vocal crowd plenty of whom were backing India only enhanced that feeling. James Anderson was roundly booed at the venue where the biggest controversy of the summer erupted during the Test. England’s ho-hum effort today will only increase the boos from the critics who have already savaged the team’s chances at the World Cup.When MS Dhoni won the toss he spoke about wanting to bowl because of “early morning help” for his quicks. Though Bhuvneshwar Kumar had the ball curling around, producing plenty of edges, he couldn’t produce the breakthrough. An hour after the start, England were comfortably placed at 75 for 0, with Alastair Cook finding some semblance of ODI form and Alex Hales providing some of the dynamic hitting he was picked for.Suresh Raina took a stunning slip catch as India’s fielding improved tremendously from the amateurish levels in the Tests•Getty Images

That was when England’s old troubles against spin surfaced again, and most gallingly for them, their initial problems were against the part-timers, Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu. Hales top-edged a sweep for the second time in his two ODI innings as Raina struck in his first over, before Cook was stumped to give Rayudu his first international wicket.Dhoni had been forced to turn to his part-timers because quick bowler Mohit Sharma hobbled off the field with a leg injury in the 11th over. Though he came back about an hour later, Dhoni didn’t need to turn to him again as the spinners, both the specialists and the irregulars, were strangling England. Between the 15th and 42nd over, which were almost entirely bowled by the tweakers, there were only two boundaries. The ball was gripping and turning, and England’s batsmen seemed as uncomfortable as someone undertaking the ice-bucket challenge. Ravindra Jadeja got one to spin big, beating Joe Root’s outside edge and Dhoni pulled off another of his express stumpings. R Ashwin found the outside edge five overs later and Eoin Morgan was caught behind. From 82 for 0, England had slid to 120 for 4.India’s fielding in the Test series had been amateurish, with catches regularly put down and run-outs virtually out of the question. England’s next two wickets, though, fell through top-notch fielding: Mohit rifled in a direct hit from wide long-off to catch Ian Bell short, and Raina swooped to take a low slip catch to send back Ben Stokes. The run-rate continued to dodder despite a couple of reverse-swept boundaries from Jos Buttler, and it was only a hard-hitting cameo from James Tredwell towards the end of the innings that lifted England to 227.That proved some way short of what England needed though. Shikhar Dhawan played a couple of sparkling strokes before slapping a short ball straight to backward point to extend his lean run. Ajinkya Rahane, promoted to the top of the order in the absence of the injured Rohit, was comfortable opening the innings. He began with a series of boundaries when the new-ball bowlers strayed, and the pick of the lot was a nonviolent push past Anderson for four. The only disappointment for him was that, like in the second ODI, he didn’t carry on to a big score, holing out for 45 after a silken innings. Virat Kohli also didn’t make a big score, but he won’t be too disappointed as he hit form after a wretched Test series. There was an effortless loft to the sightscreen for six early on, after he which he knuckled down and worked the singles and twos. With the asking rate well in check, he looked set to play the long innings, but picked out mid-on when on 40.That allowed Rayudu a chance to further his middle-order credentials – and he responded with an unbeaten 64 to shepherd India to victory – and also allowed Raina the chance to supplement his superb work with the ball and in the field with a brisk cameo. The England bowlers never put India under any serious pressure, and Steve Finn’s first England game in nearly a year ended in disappointment as he returned figures of 8-0-50-1. The bigger worry for the home side was how thoroughly they were outclassed, though they could grab a sliver of solace in knowing that conditions during the World Cup are unlikely to be similar to today.

Mitchell leaves Northants on precipice

Daryl Mitchell’s maiden five wicket haul in T20s left holders Northamptonshire on the verge of elimination from the Natwest T20 Blast.

Press Association18-Jul-2014
ScorecardDaryl Mitchell claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in T20s•Getty ImagesDaryl Mitchell’s maiden five wicket haul in T20s left holders Northamptonshire on the verge of elimination from the Natwest T20 Blast. Mitchell’s 5 for 28 sent the holder’s to a 31-run defeat to Worcestershire and now if Nottinghamshire get the better of Leicestershire on Sunday at Trent Bridge then Northants’ defence of the title is as good as over.Daryl Mitchell and Colin Munro were the stars for the victors, the former claiming his maiden five-wicket haul in any format to help dismiss the hosts for 131 in reply to Worcestershire’s 162 for 9 – a total built around Munro’s quickfire 49.After Richard Oliver fell to the first ball of the match, lofting Matt Spriegel inexplicably to long-off, marginally in excess of 50 was taken from the Powerplay. That included the fall of Tom Kohler-Cadmore but Munro was quickly into his stride with a salvo of boundaries.Mitchell fell to the first ball after the fielding restrictions had been relaxed and Ross Whiteley was excellently run out by Steven Crook but that brought in Ben Cox who provided excellent support for Munro. The duo added 49 in slightly more than four overs and while they were going a substantial total looked on the cards. But the New Zealander’s departure for a 30-ball 49, run out by bowler David Willey at the non-striker’s end after calling Cox through, meant that expectations had to be lowered.Cox moved on to a career-best Twenty20 score of 46 but the loss of four wickets in the last five overs, three of which fell in the 20th bowled by Muhammad Azharullah, and the addition of only 39 combined to make the final score of 162 seemingly under par.Northamptonshire openers Richard Levi and Willey responded solidly and had taken 42 from the runs required column before the latter had his stumps rattled by Joe Leach. When the Powerplay finished, 115 were needed from 84 balls which represents a fairly straightforward task in the majority of cases but the fall of Levi and Kyle Coetzer, both to Shaaiq Choudhry, who took two for 21, changed the balance of power slightly. The scales tipped further in Worcestershire’s favour when Crook gave Mitchell a return catch in his first over and that put Adam Rossington in the spotlight. The loanee hauled a couple of sixes over the leg-side to keep the hosts in touch but he fell lbw to Mitchell and when Rob Newton chipped a return catch in the same over Worcestershire were scenting victory. And if Northamptonshire were sinking at that point, the hosts hit the bottom a couple of overs later. Ben Duckett had already sliced Mitchell McClenaghan to deep point but when Mitchell dismissed both James Middlebrook and Spriegel in the 18th over the game was up. All that was left was for Olly Stone to fall to Jack Shantry as Northants were bowled out 32 shy of their target.”We assessed the pitch, Colin and myself, and we thought that 150 was about par so we were a shade over that,” Worcestershire captain Mitchell said. “We bowled very well and kept them under pressure as it was starting to stick in the pitch a bit.”We executed our plan to perfection, it’s generally been our preference to bat first and it was a good wicket to put a score on the board. We try to go hard in the Powerplay and although we lost a few wickets in the first half of the innings but Ben Cox held us together.”On the flip side, Mitchell’s opposite number Coetzer was pretty deflated knowing that his side are really struggling to remain afloat. “There’s quite a bit of disappointment around although we’ve stillgot a very slim chance,” he said.”They won the game, they had two guys who nullified the spin by switch-hitting and that makes you start thinking about your other options. I thought 135 or 140 was about right but it was down to them as they played really well.”

North Zone lose three in 573 chase

North Zone have a lot left to do on the fifth day of the BCL final as they require another 319 runs to win, while South Zone have to take seven wickets to clinch the title

ESPNcricinfo staff12-May-2014North Zone have a lot left to do on the fifth day of the BCL final as they require another 319 runs to win, while South Zone have to take seven wickets to clinch the title.North Zone were 254 for 3 at the end of the fourth day, scoring at almost four for 63 overs. They were set 573 to win after South Zone were bowled out for 536 in their second innings.Farhad Hossain, unbeaten on 85, added 42 runs for the second wicket with Junaid Siddique, and shared an unbroken 128-run fourth-wicket partnership with the captain Nasir Hossain.Nasir(67 not out) was circumspect for much of his innings, but struck his Bangladesh team-mate Abdur Razzak for four fours in the last session, with two coming in the last over of the day. Farhad attacked the spinners, hitting all nine of his fours against them. The North Zone openers Maisuqur Rahman and Junaid added 57 for the first wicket in just 10.4 overs as they capitalised on the poor bowling early in the innings. But Razzak ended the partnership by removing Maisuqur for 32. Junaid struck a half-century before being dismissed by Shuvagata Hom in the 24th over.Earlier in the day, South Zone lost their way as they lost seven wickets for 98 runs. Mithun Ali made 126 off 183 balls but was caught behind off Subashis Roy, who picked up three wickets. Razzak hammered two sixes and three fours in his 24-ball 33 which propelled South Zone to 536.

This win better than 4-0 – Mushfiqur

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim rated the 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand slightly ahead of their 4-0 win over the same opponents in 2010. He believed the win this time was evidence of Bangladesh’s progress and at the same time argued it is harder to follow up on a previously high achievement. The home side won three close matches last time New Zealand visited, but in the current three-match series they won comfortably in the first two and chased 309 in the third and final game in Fatullah.”Both the achievements have different experiences but personally the 3-0 win feels better for me,” Mushfiqur said. “Firstly, I am the captain, and secondly because you can achieve a result with a lot of hard work but to hold that result is even more difficult.””During the 4-0 win in 2010, the team was different. Here our best performers were not in the team. Despite everything we won this series, so I feel this series win is doubly important. This is proof that the Bangladesh team is improving.”The sense of confidence within Mushfiqur’s team was evident in his decision to bat first in Mirpur in the second ODI, which they won by 40 runs, and also by the decision to field first in Fatullah. The recent scores on this newly-laid wicket suggested that batting first would be a better option due to lower bounce in the second innings. However, it turned out to be a truer wicket with better bounce and Bangladesh made 309 when the average second-innings score on these wickets had been 157.”It wasn’t a win-the-toss-bat-first kind of wicket,” Mushfiqur said. “Since it was a day game, we wanted to use early swing in the first five to ten overs, take wickets and put them on pressure.”But they started well and it seemed like they would score 320-330 at one point. A score like 307, with the new ODI rules, is not a big target. We just tried to play at our best.”This win was secured by the little contributions within the batting line-up. It started with Ziaur Rahman’s cameo where he swung at almost every ball and came up with two fours and two sixes in his 20-ball 22. By the time he fell in the eighth over, Bangladesh’s run-rate was well in line with what was required.Mominul Haque’s 32 kept the run-rate intact while Naeem Islam’s half-century was responsible for the rest of the innings. Nasir Hossain provided the finishing with an unbeaten 44 off 38 balls, with Sohag Gazi and Mahmudullah also helping out”I think the small contributions were a lot in numbers. The young players are playing well, putting pressure on the senior players. We also have to try to hold our position,” Mushfiqur said.”This is good for Bangladesh cricket. Everyone sees the team’s interest ahead of their own.Mushfiqur revealed he had had a talk with Nasir after the batsman did not contribute in the first two matches of the series. He added that Naeem, too, was an inspiration because he was not even in their plans until Shakib Al Hasan came down with dengue fever, but he turned out to be one of the Man-of-the-Series contenders with the highest runs among both teams although that ultimately went to the captain”I never thought of becoming the Man of the Series,” Mushfiqur said. “I was congratulating Naeem because he is the highest scorer, so he was unlucky that I got it. He wasn’t supposed to play. If Shakib didn’t get sick he would not be playing the whole series, so I feel that everyone has matured a lot.”Nasir didn’t score in the last two games. I have been telling him for the last two days not to worry too much. When the team needs runs you will score, we said. I hope that we can continue like this which is the biggest challenge. It’s difficult but if we have the mentality we can do it.”

Mustard 91 too much for Lancs

Phil Mustard’s aggressive 91 saw Durham race to a notable Yorkshire Bank 40 win over last season’s semi-finalists Lancashire. It was Durham’s first List A win at Old Trafford.

It was Durham’s first List A win at Old Trafford. In pursuit of 217 to win, Mustard and opening partner Mark Stoneman scored at 10 runs an over in the Powerplay – including a run of 26 runs off seven balls. Stoneman hit Wayne White for five fours in the fourth over before Mustard pulled Oliver Newby for six at the start of the fifth. But, after the departures of Stoneman for 32 and Ryan Pringle in the space of eight balls to leave the score at 81 for 2 in the ninth over, Mustard built upon the early assault to secure a first win at the second attempt with 31 balls to spare.Lancashire, who posted 216 for 9, got off to a flyer in their first outing thanks to openers Stephen Moore and Ashwell Prince in a 73-run stand inside 11 overs. Moore, who has not been able to force his way into his county’s early-season County Championship plans, led the way with 46 off 37 balls, even pulling Mark Wood for a six over square-leg as Lancashire passed 50 in the early stages of the eighth over. But Prince, for 34, and Moore both fell inside four overs to Gareth Breese and Ben Stokes to leave the score at 83 for 2. From then on, Lancashire could not maintain the same intensity as their innings stumbled along with the loss of regular wickets.Karl Brown hit 32 before being stumped by Mustard off Pringle’s off-spin – the same way Prince had fallen to Breese. And when stand-in captain Simon Katich was caught behind off Wood, the hosts were 128 for 5 in the 26th over. Jordan Clark and White tried their best to up the ante but, despite the latter’s 37 off 47, they were unable to do so.Chris Rushworth nipped in with three of the last four Lancashire wickets to fall – those of Clark caught at long-on, White caught and bowled and Newby caught behind – to finish with 3 for 44.After Mustard and Stoneman shared 71 inside seven overs, the former added 90 inside 17 with Paul Collingwood for the third wicket. Mustard hit eight fours and two sixes over midwicket in 86 balls having been dropped on 43 by Simon Kerrigan.

Bracewell in doubt for first Test

New Zealand Cricket are investigating an incident involving Doug Bracewell, which has left the fast bowler with an injured foot and doubtful for the first Test

Andrew McGlashan in Dunedin04-Mar-2013New Zealand Cricket is investigating an incident involving Doug Bracewell which has left the fast bowler with an injured foot and in doubt for the first Test.Bracewell is understood to have suffered a cut during or after a party before joining up with the New Zealand squad in Dunedin. NZC are trying to determine the exact circumstances and find out if alcohol played any role.Bracewell, who did not require stitches to the injury, did not train with the squad at the University Oval on Monday having been ordered to stay at the hotel by medics. He will undergo a fitness test on Tuesday. Ian Butler, the Otago seamer, has been called into the squad as cover with a final decision to be taken after training tomorrow.Heath Mills, the chief executive of the New Zealand Players’ Association, is already involved in the situation. Mike Sandle, the New Zealand team manager, said that the facts needed to be confirmed but that it was an issue the team did not need.”I’ll be working with Doug and Heath to get to the bottom of it,” Sandle said. “I’m disappointed to be standing in front of you. No one wants to be standing here like this. There are a lot of acts I need to find out about, but if it is related to that [drink], I’m very disappointed.”It is a distraction. We want to earn the faith of the public and put in a good Test match performance, so it is disappointing to be here but I want to make it plain that, as I speak now, there is a lot of stuff I’m unaware of,” he added.Sandle also stressed that the injury occurred away from official New Zealand duty. No replacement has been called into the squad yet. Neil Wagner, the left-arm quick, was added after the New Zealand XI match in Queenstown and is one of the four pacemen in the 13-member squad.Butler, who was part of the Twenty20 squad against England, could yet find himself playing his first Test for more than eight years if Bracewell is ruled out and New Zealand want four seamers. He took 39 wickets at 25.12 in this season’s Plunket Shield and has been called up ahead of Mark Gillespie who played for the New Zealand XI in Queenstown.Last year, Bracewell was dropped from the one-day squad in the series against South Africa for breaking team protocol.
