    WHAT HAPPENED?

Zendejas is back with the USMNT for Nations League matches against Trinidad & Tobago, with the U.S. set to face the Soca Warriors home and away for the chance to play in the Copa America.

The USMNT will be without both Pulisic and Weah, Gregg Berhalter's starting wingers, opening the door for someone like Zendejas to step in and make a statement.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Zendejas made the switch to the USMNT earlier this year, having previously earned two caps for Mexico's senior team. After some solid initial performances early in the year, Zendejas struggled a bit in the Gold Cup, failing to score as the U.S. were bounced early by Panama.

Because of that, this camp takes on added importance as Zendejas looks to solidify a place with the group ahead of a potential Copa America call-up.

    WHAT ZENDEJAS SAID

"Obviously, it sucks not having those two guys in because they're a huge part of the team," Zendejas said, "but I'm going to try to take this opportunity and make the most of it. I'm really looking forward to it."

"I can agree that my Gold Cup wasn't the best," Zendejas added, "but you've just got to look at the next opportunity you have."

The winger enters camp in good form after several notable performance for Club America. The winger has scored in four of his last seven matches for the Mexican giants, giving him some much-needed confidence ahead of this big USMNT camp.

"I've been working hard back at home with my club team," he said. "I've been working on my finishing, just working on what the coach is asking me to do. I'll try to take that and bring it into this camp with my teammates and try to give a great performance over here this week."

Para ele, a camisa “pesou” e o time Tiago Nunes “encaixou” nesta fase.

-Quinta força. Disseram até que ia ser rebaixado. Agora estamos aí, time encaixando e a camisa pesando.

Exactly how much money have Leipzig spent on new players in this millennium?

RasenBallsport Leipzig, aka Leipzig, came into existence in 2009 and since then rose through the lower divisions in the German leagues to reach the Bundesliga in 2016.

They finished as runners-up in the 2016-17 season, thus qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in their history and in the 2019-20 season, they reached the semi-final of the tournament.

Over the years, the German giants have spent a significant amount of money on some great young talent. Timo Werner was a breakout star for them, as well as Naby Keita, Dani Olmo and many others.

Leipzig signed Kevin Kampl in the summer transfer window of 2017, paying €20 million for his signature from Bayer Leverkusen.

Kampl previously featured for Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund before signing for Leverkusen in 2015.

The Slovenia international signed a four-year contract in 2017 and has since then gone on to make over 180 appearances for Leipzig.

Norwegian striker Alexander Sorloth arrived at Crystal Palace in the January transfer window in 2018 when the Premier League club signed him for €9 million.

One year later, he was loaned to Gent in January 2019 before being loaned to Trabzonspor in August 2019.

In September 2020, Leipzig came calling, signing him for €20m.

However, after just one season in Germany, in August 2021, he was loaned to Real Sociedad for two seasons.

Leipzig made Timo Werner one of their most expensive signings on two occasions with the latest coup coming in August 2022, when they signed him back from Chelsea for €20 million.

Werner spent two seasons at Chelsea, making 56 appearances, scoring 10 goals in what was an underwhelming spell considering what was expected of him before this transfer.

The German made a decent start to his second spell at Leipzig and seamlessly settled into their team.

The attacking midfielder's performances saw him sign for Leipzig in December 2020 with them paying €22 million for his signature, making him the most expensive Hungarian player in history.

Szoboszlai has made 40 appearances for Leipzig, scoring seven goals.

Cosmetic changes won't help Pakistan cricket – Waqar

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis has offered to step down after the side’s poor performance at the World T20 2016 but has warned that cosmetic changes will be insufficient to address the deeper issues within Pakistan cricket. Speaking to the media in Lahore before meeting with a committee set up to look into the side’s performance, Waqar also apologised to the fans for the poor World T20 result.Pakistan won only one of the four group matches in the World T20, after a debacle in the Asia Cup in Bangladesh last month where they failed to qualify for the final. Following the team’s early exit in the Asia Cup, PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan had hinted at sweeping changes, and the board formed a special committee to monitor Pakistan’s performance. This committee is expected to submit its recommendations to the PCB chairman later this week. Waqar’s two-year contract ends in June but it is learnt that his tenure with the side is unlikely to be extended.”I apologise to the whole nation, to all of you and to all the people who were at the airport chanting against us, all the people at the NCA [National Cricket Academy] who look after us,” Waqar said. “I apologise to everyone. Literally, I fold my hands and request all of you to forgive us for the way we performed, it should not have been this way. Our performance should have been better, but unfortunately that didn’t happen.”This is Waqar’s second stint as coach, after he had guided the side in 2010-11. He had parted ways with the team in 2011 due to a rift with captain Shahid Afridi. With Waqar and Misbah-ul-Haq at the helm, Pakistan had climbed to No. 2 in the ICC Test rankings, and are currently at No. 4. Their position in the limited-overs rankings, however, has been weak. They are currently ranked No. 8 among ODI sides and No. 7 in the T20I format. The side’s last win in a T20I series came in September 2015 against Zimbabwe, and they subsequently lost series to England and New Zealand in the lead-up to the Asia Cup and the World T20.Waqar refrained from blaming individuals, and instead urged the PCB to address the deeper issues in the system.”These days there is a notion being discussed to dismiss the chairman, selectors or the coaches, but the point is whether the problems are really being understood. Are we really getting down to the problem in our country and mending it? Are we really correcting the system which needs to be rectified?”So cosmetic changes will not help. This might bring temporary relief, might make you feel that things have changed and everything is fine but I think we should think about this deeply and mark the problems,” he said. “We know where the problems are and we have to open our eyes, eradicate the politics from cricket and get things right. I had mentioned these problems in 2015 and have put them up again. I can hope the PCB can deal with them.”We don’t need to hide anything, everything is in front of us, they way we played. It’s not like I am hiding anything. In fact, the time to sweep things under the rug is over. It is time to step up and solve problems. People have blamed me. That’s not an issue. I will go home but the problem remains. If the problem is solved by sacking me, then sack me. Not tomorrow, but today. But the problem is deeper than that.”Waqar also chose to play down the uncertainty surrounding his future in the role.”My future as coach isn’t relevant. Why is there a sense that Pakistan cricket is linked with my future? It is definitely not. I had a stint previously as well and I am here again but I may not be there in the future and someone else may come in. The point is, I am not the problem. We have to find the real problem.”Waqar has submitted his report of the tournament to the PCB chairman and it is learnt that the report covers a wide range of issues, from selection matters to the players’ capacities and the issues he has faced in last two years. While he refused to divulge information about the report, he said that most of the issues facing Pakistan cricket were in the public domain, prime among them being the lack of international cricket in country.”It’s not that roots have always been weak in the country … cricket not being played here in Pakistan is one of the many problems but we have to take care of our stadiums and domestic cricket to get it going.”Yes not having international cricket in Pakistan did make an impact and disturbed the roots of cricket. Whatever you have made in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, a home away from home, isn’t really a solution. India and other countries are producing cricketers by playing at home grounds. Cricket the game isn’t for stars, it’s a game for heroes. We often mix it as you may see a star doing TV ads but cricket is played by heroes and those who play the game don’t see other things around. So we want heroes and not the stars.”

Soumya graduates to the next level

Soumya Sarkar’s longest ODI innings before today was 58-balls long. Today, once he survived that period, he knew he had to make it big

Mohammad Isam in Mirpur22-Apr-2015Tamim Iqbal smiled as he turned away from Soumya Sarkar. The two Bangladesh batsmen had met in the middle after Soumya had jabbed Umar Gul over midwicket in the fourth over. He had mistimed the previous ball through the same area for a boundary but this one had come off the middle. Tamim’s reaction suggested just that.Soumya might have been worried after making just 20 and 17 in the first two matches. But he passed through his danger period in this game with ease. When he played the 37th delivery in this game, a single down to mid-off, it became his longest innings of the ODI series. After being dropped in the 18th over by wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan, when he played the next ball – the 59th, it was his longest ODI innings. By this point he knew he had to stay, make it big. That’s what Tamim told him.”I played today like I always do,” Soumya said. “I slowed down in the forties. I made fresh plans after talking to Tamim . He told me, ‘Make it big and stay till the end. Finish it, and you will see the pleasure will be something else’.””I was getting out in 20s and 30s. I was thinking about this. I was concerned. I talked to my seniors who told me to play my way. When I first saw the score, I was on 18. I thought that it had been done smoothly so I didn’t do anything differently today. I just started and ended the job.”Soumya sped away after his fifty, which came off 63 balls. The next 50 came off 31 balls, with five fours and three sixes. The hundred came off a six too, pulled into the deep midwicket boundary after which he cramped a little and then celebrated.”It is a habit. I don’t celebrate too much when I do anything big,” he said. “The shot I played it, didn’t go far and I didn’t understand if it would go all the way. Apart from that I had cramped immediately after hitting that shot.”When I saw that it was six, I think the cramp went away. At the end of the day, the celebration I did was from my heart,” he said. His final act was to lay into Umar Gul in the 38th over, after he was dropped in the same bowler’s previous over at deep square-leg. After Mushfiqur gave him strike, Soumya clattered it past the bowler, struck a majestic pull shot and then hammered one over long-on.Soumya is on five months into his international career, and he has now played ten ODIs. He was Bangladesh’s most impressive newcomer in the World Cup, although he struck only a single fifty in the competition. But Soumya’s game never wavered; his aggressive shotmaking was the biggest gain.Soumya feels that the support of the dressing-room, particularly his captain, made a huge difference to his outlook before and during the World Cup. He is reaping the rewards now.”My captain told me from the very beginning to play my way,” he said. “Play freely, don’t be afraid of anything. I was successful because the seniors supported me so much. I have only tried to be myself. The six World Cup innings went well for me. I tried my best in those innings and though I couldn’t make them big, it helped my confidence.”When he had ended the innings and taken the short victory lap thanking the full house in Mirpur, Soumya looked lost momentarily in the crowd that gathered in front of the dressing-room. He had just completed the interview with the broadcasters. But he towered over the rest around him, and when he was done with the photos and the hugs, he bowed his head as he strode back to the Bangladesh dressing-room.

Can perennial underachievers Sylhet deliver?

What to look out for in the various teams, in the National Cricket League 2014-15

Sylhet DivisionWhere they finished last season
Fifth place.Big Picture
Perennial underachievers, Sylhet Division will be one of the teams gearing up to avoid being in the second tier in the 2015-16 season. Having scraped the bottom of most NCL points table over the last decade, Sylhet they wouldn’t want a repeat.Their senior players, like Alok Kapali, Rajin Saleh, Enamul Haque jr, Imtiaz Hossain and Nabil Samad, will once again form the core of the side, alongside youngsters like Rumman Ahmed and Sadiqur Rahman. Last season the team’s best batsman was Rajin’s younger brother Sayem Alam, who made 475 runs at 39.58 with a century. They would need him and the senior players to perform better for them to have a shot at finishing in the top four.Key players
Rajin Saleh is one of the few players these days who played in the inaugural NCL in the 1999-2000 season. He remains one of the key players for Sylhet, and has done well for Partex Sporting Club in the Dhaka Premier League, though he couldn’t save the club from relegation.Team changes
Nasum Ahmed is a left-arm spinner who has gone to Barisal Division while Shaker Ahmed, another left-arm spinner, has not played in the Dhaka leagues this season and is said to be on an hiatus from cricket.Below the radar
Left-hand batsman Sayem Alam is tight in defense, and has the ability to put the ball through the off-side with some style. He didn’t do too well for Mohammedan this season, but remains a talent to look out for in first-class cricket. What they say
“We will definitely try to stay in the first tier. We have some good young players, many of whom have played well in the Dhaka Premier League this season.” – Nabil SamadChittagong DivisionWhere they finished last season
Sixth place.Big Picture
The only time Chittagong Division won the NCL title was in its inaugural year, in 1999. Since then the team has often turned out modest seasons, sometimes threatening for the trophy but hardly producing the young cricketers they once did. For the second-largest city in the country, this is a huge disappointment.None of Chittagong’s batsmen made 400 runs last season, an indictment of the overall performance of their batsmen. Mahbubul Karim, Nafees Iqbal, Faisal Hossain and Irfan Shukkur made 300-plus but it didn’t help their cause much. Their highest wicket-taker from last season, Mohammad Younus, has not been picked either.Left-arm spinners Saju Dutta and Naeem Islam jr will be asked to bear the workload alongside legspinner Noor Hossain Munna.Key players
Nafees Iqbal is one of the senior-most cricketers in the Chittagong team, alongside Nazimuddin and Faisal Hossain. The trio has often had to hold it together, and will particularly be required to do so this year when they seem to be devoid of much experience in the squad.Team changes
Chittagong have roped in Sarwar Imran, arguably Bangladesh’s most successful domestic coach. The entry of allrounder Alauddin Babu and left-arm spinner Naeem Islam jr, and the re-entry of legspinner Noor Hossain Munna, will help Chittagong have a stronger line-up.Below the radar
Irfan Shukkur emerged as an unlikely match-winner for Kalabagan Cricket Academy in this season’s Dhaka Premier League, particularly with his cameo against Abahani. He would be expected to contribute more to Chittagong’s effort this season, and is recognised as one of the brightest young talents in the team. What they say
“It is important to keep the process going, and not look too far ahead. I think we have a balanced team this year, and we hope to do better than last season.” – Nafees IqbalDhaka MetropolisWhere they finished last season
Seventh place.Big Picture
When someone like Elias Sunny finishes with just eleven wickets in six matches, you know that Dhaka Metropolis will struggle to bowl teams out. Asif Ahmed was the highest scorer and wicket-taker for the Dhaka Metro side, and that tells you a lot about that bowling attack.Their batting looks stronger this year with the inclusion of the in-form Mehedi Maruf as well as the likes of Saikat Ali, Marshall Ayub, Mehrab Hossain jr and Shamsur Rahman. In fact it would be the discarded Bangladesh opener Shamsur who could be the difference as he is likely to be available for most of the season.Left-arm quick Abu Haider Rony is said to be a good pick, though he is still an unproven talent at the first-class level, while Sadman Islam is a young batsman who has impressed many people with his temperament.Key players
Marshall Ayub and Mehrab Hossain jr remain their most experienced batsmen and, off late, the most successful too. Asif Ahmed will also be asked to score heavily, like he did last year, while in the bowling department, Mohammad Shahid and Elias Sunny will have to bowl a lot better than their performance in the last NCL.Team changes
They will miss the services of Mahmudullah and Arafat Sunny, with the latter being more missed due to his regular contribution in the NCL.Below the radar
Left-arm spinner Asif Hasan was the second-highest wicket-taker in the Dhaka Premier League this season, and is likely to make his first-class debut on the opening day. What they say
“I would like to be one of the top batsmen in the competition, but more importantly we would like to do well as a team.” – Marshall AyubBarisal DivisionEighth place.Big Picture
Having finished in last place in last season’s NCL, they remain one of the likeliest teams to be in the second tier next season. Having only a couple of Bangladesh players doesn’t quite help their cause.Shahriar Nafees and Sohag Gazi apart, the likes of Kamrul Islam Rabbi, Fazle Rabbi and Salman Hossain will be expected to punch above their weight once again. The addition of Nasum Ahmed may give them some cover in the spin department in the absence of Monir Hossain, the highest wicket-taker in last season’s NCL.Barisal would also have to become a more professional team off the field if they are to win more matches this season. If there was one team who needed a two-tier system to be motivated, it is Barisal.Key players
Shahriar Nafees and Sohag Gazi are Barisal’s flag bearers. Though Gazi has the official bowling-action test result hanging over his head, he would be expected to play regularly at the start of the season. Nafees is the senior-most player in the side and remains the key avenue to Barisal getting good starts.Team changesMonir Hossain’s knee injury has kept him out this season, while Iftekhar Ahmed, Nafees’ younger brother, has gone to the USA for higher studies.Below the radar
Nuruzzaman was the team’s second-highest scorer last season and is rated highly by Nafees. He will be expected to play a more central role in their batting line-up.What they say
“Our performance wasn’t up to the mark last year but we hope to improve this season and make the top four.” – Shahriar Nafees

New Zealand battle past Jayawardene ton

Sri Lanka discovered that at Hagley Oval what goes for New Zealand’s Test team goes for their ODI outfit as well: the hosts’ seamers are deadly dangerous, their top order is daunting and their lower-middle order can turn matches on their own too

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando10-Jan-2015
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMahela Jayawardene was at his calculating best, but his 107-ball 104 was in vain•Getty ImagesSri Lanka discovered that at Hagley Oval what goes for New Zealand’s Test team goes for their ODI outfit as well: the hosts’ seamers are deadly dangerous in the early overs, and while the New Zealand top order is daunting, their lower-middle order can turn matches on their own too.Brendon McCullum’s fast bowlers made Sri Lanka regret choosing to bat on a pitch sporting grass, reducing the visitors to 82 for 4 in the 23rd over. Mahela Jayawardene held the bones of a lethargic batting effort together with his masterful 104 off 107 balls, but a total of 218 always seemed at least 30 runs too light. Then, although Sri Lanka had New Zealand by the collar when the chase slipped to 101 for 5, Corey Anderson showed he had composure to go with his cow-corner clubs. He composed a steady 81 off 96 balls, enlisting the help of Luke Ronchi and Nathan McCullum to take his side to within 10 runs of victory. Anderson’s dismissal made for some late jitters, but the hosts got home with seven overs and three wickets unused to take a 1-0 lead in the series. While New Zealand lost four top-order wickets for 38 runs, at no stage were they under pressure to score quickly – partly because Sri Lanka had made so few, but also thanks to McCullum’s 22-ball 51 to kick off the chase. He smote three sixes and six fours in his in all, targeting the square boundaries in particular.McCullum was also fond of launching the offspin of Sachithra Senanayaka down the ground and equalled his and Ross Taylor’s record for fastest New Zealand fifty, when he deposited Senanayake high over long-on off the 19th ball he faced.McCullum, though, fell on his sword in the same over as Senanayake continued to flight the ball, made it dip and turn sharply to have the New Zealand captain stumped. Tom Latham and Kane Williamson were undone by spin too, and Grant Elliott was bowled by a Nuwan Kulasekara indipper, but Anderson worked his way steadily into the innings.Playing out plenty of dot balls before attempting to even begin collecting the singles, he slammed Kulasekara through cover to collect his first boundary off his 17th ball. He remained choosy with the expansive strokes and the heave across the line that sent Thisara Perera to the boundary, or the mighty pull off Shaminda Eranga that deposited the ball into the crowd were in contrast to the risk-free innings Anderson strove to play.Anderson added 48 runs for the sixth wicket with Ronchi and an additional 60 more with Nathan McCullum. Neither of his sidekicks looked comfortable at the crease, but they did enough to support a largely-secure Anderson. Nathan McCullum remained unbeaten on 25, hitting the winning run with Adam Milne at the other end.It was fitting that Milne was at the crease to see the match won, because it had been he who cut the Sri Lanka top order open in the morning. He bent the ball in to strike Dimuth Karunaratne’s front pad in the fourth over, then dismissed Kumar Sangakkara in the eighth, as his full, seaming delivery collected the outside edge and flew to point. Milne occasionally pipped 150kph on the speed gun, but it was the movement he gleaned off the seam that made him threatening. Those early gains were not squandered by New Zealand, who were rarely loose with the ball, and kept attacking fields to every batsman throughout the game. Mitchell McClenaghan began a little waywardly, but was quickly hitting the back-of-a-length that Sri Lanka’s batsmen found difficult to score off, and he and Nathan McCullum controlled the run rate through the middle overs.McClenaghan was rewarded for his economy in the 47th over, when he claimed three wickets in four balls. Jeevan Mendis and Jaywardene were both out trying to lift short deliveries over the leg side, and Thisara Perera was snaffled at slip for a golden duck. McClenaghan finished with 4 for 36 from his 10 overs, while Milne claimed 2 for 37.Jayawardene overcame early-innings inertia with an upper cut over the slips, followed by a breezy drive through the covers off successive McClenaghan deliveries, but then settled into a rhythm of singles and twos into the outfield, while wickets continued to fall at the other end. He didn’t hit a boundary between the 19th and 32nd over, but rarely did his strike rate dip below 85. The fours resumed with a ramp over the keeper that took him past fifty, and Jayawardene began to look for the boundary more often as the death overs approached.Lahiru Thirimanne had been a firm ally, after Angelo Mathews had been run out, but did little for the run rate during his 50-ball 23. Jayawardene, meanwhile, was lofting the quicks over cover and mid-off, as McCullum kept the field in, and it was only his positivity that prevented New Zealand from crowding the bat even further. He completed his 18th ODI ton in the 46th over, but was out shortly after, effectively sinking Sri Lanka’s hopes of eclipsing 240.
