Another name on the production line?
Whilst the Blues U23 squad were knocked out of the Birmingham Senior Cup on Tuesday night, there was one name that stood out above the rest of the team, and that was young midfielder Jack Concannon.
If you were to read the Birmingham City Twitter account during the game last night, you’d be forgiven for thinking that he was the only player doing anything for the Blues.
The youngster was mentioned three times in the first half alone, gliding past defenders and ‘making things happen.’
He was instrumental in the Blues’ goal on the night, picking up the ball near halfway and driving through midfield where his shot was rebounded in by Ryan Stirk.

A central midfielder by trade, Concannon isn’t scared of getting forward and joining in with the attack.
He’s started to make a bit of a name for himself in the U23 squad this season, finding the back of the net twice, against Sheffield United with a ‘fine strike’ and another against Leeds United.
It wouldn’t be as if a move like this was without precedent either, Odin Bailey was making good progress in the U23 side earlier in the season.
He netted against Ipswich Town, Charlton Athletic and Crystal Palace and he managed to get a few appearances in the team out of it. The teenager even managed to score against Middlesbrough for the senior side a couple of weeks ago.
Not just Bailey, but the emergence of Jude Bellingham as a regular in the first team shows that Pep Clotet isn’t scared at dipping into the academy when he has to this season of he believes that they can help the team out.
We’ve discussed in the past that a tweak in formation to more of a 4-3-2-1 for the first team could be a way to get the best out of the squad.
Having two men playing off Lukas Jutkiewicz rather than just one alongside him suggests Concannon can certainly fill that role. Even if Clotet doesn’t want to make that tweak just yet, he can still do the same role in the 4-4-2 that he’s currently using.
So there’s a spot ready and waiting for him in the team, it’s just a case of when not if he’s going to be in a position to take it.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, John Hartson has talked up the major benefits a director of football would have at Manchester United.
The Red Devils have come under heavy fire for their scatter-gun approach to the transfer market in recent years, with players of vastly different profiles being signed under various managers.
How much money could you make busking for a week as a freestyle footballer? Find out in the video below…
It is a policy that has unquestionably led to the mess Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is currently attempting to fix, and Hartson has suggested appointing a director of football would help bring a sense of control and decisiveness to the club.
He told Football FanCast: “Get a director of football in, somebody very experienced, somebody who’s done the job before and not an ex-player. Somebody who’s maybe managed before. Just to go in and help Solskjaer and oversee one or two of the signings. I think that would be a great move for United.
“They need someone who’s been there, seen it and done it at big clubs and can give sound, solid advice to Solskjaer.”

Make no mistake about it, United are in desperate need for a director of football. Ed Woodward has come under increasing, and understandable, scrutiny for his role in the club’s poor recruitment over the past few seasons, and that is a direct result of not having someone who is football-oriented making those decisions.
Having an ex-manager who has been around the block and can liaise with Solskjaer and discuss things on a football level, rather than on a business one, would pay huge dividends for the Red Devils.
As well as the added focus they would bring to the club’s recruitment strategy, they could play a major part in helping the United boss turn things around.
Solskjaer’s inexperience has been a stick to beat the Norwegian with since his permanent appointment, and so having an almost ‘mentor-like’ figure voice their thoughts and act as a sounding board would help streamline matters.
United need major help behind the scenes, and Hartson’s calls for a director of football are absolutely spot on.
This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…
According to The Shields Gazette, West Brom could go back in for former loan star Dwight Gayle in the January transfer window.
What’s the word?
The 28-year-old striker was on loan at the Hawthorns last season under former boss Darren Moore and quickly became an influential member of the squad.
Gayle scored 24 goals in 41 appearances as the club made the playoffs last season. He also added eight assists, showing how much of a team asset he really was.
In the summer, Bilic tried to get his hands on the forward but his parent club, Newcastle United, kept hold of him at manager Steve Bruce’s request.
At the time, they valued their frontman at between £15-20m which West Brom simply couldn’t afford.
The Croatian has added fuel to the fire by stating he would, in an ideal world, like another striker.
Music to Albion’s ears
If the Baggies can find the money for him, he could be one of the signings of the season based on how he performed last term.
He’s clearly a very popular figure at the Hawthorns despite only being at the club temporarily and several supporters wanted him to re-sign this summer.
The move would not only add goals to a frontline which has scored just two in six between them, but it would also enable Bilic to play the two striker system he spoke about when he first arrived at the club.
Gayle predominantly played in a two last term and alongside Jay Rodriguez, they scored 46 times.

Charlie Austin and Kenneth Zohore could really benefit from having someone like Gayle alongside them and a possible pairing could bring fruitful benefits to all concerned, specifically with Austin.
West Brom could have two proven goalscorers leading the line for them in the second half of the season if the attacker signs again. Austin has 68 in 135 Championship appearances, per Tranfermarkt, and the Newcastle man showed his potential last season.
Landing a player like Gayle could well be the difference between securing promotion or remaining in the Championship.
International breaks are usually the time when football fans go crazy.
There’s no club football on the telly and international football seldom commands the same level of interest as domestic football until a big tournament swings around?
And while this may or may not be true for everyone, Barcelona couldn’t be happier that the break arrived when it did, and all for one simple reason: injuries.
Currently, their whole attacking trident of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele are out sidelined by various injuries and the Blaugrana have been without their star forwards for the majority of the first three games they’ve played.
Messi is yet to make his 2019/20 debut, Suarez played one half of the first game and the young Frenchman only featured in the curtain-raiser against Athletic Bilbao, after which he headed straight for the stands and has remained there ever since.
But the international break, as annoying as it gets for fans of club football, is now a true blessing in disguise because it means those injured players won’t miss any action and have extra time to recover.
Of course, one has to consider the “FIFA virus” that usually takes at least a couple of victims during the break.
And Ernesto Valverde, of all people, will feel extremely lucky because he can use this time, until 14 September when Barcelona welcomes Valencia to the Camp Nou, to figure out how to organise his squad with some of their returning stars.
Barcelona are hoping that Messi returns after the break, but as much as the return of the wizard will be a huge boost for the squad, it may also cause Valverde a headache or two.

One key thing he absolutely has to figure out before those games is how to put Antoine Griezmann and Messi in the same lineup so that he gets the best from both without one limiting the other.
The little Argentine doesn’t need much instruction, granted, but his freedom does affect other players around him. Messi operates with a license to practically go anywhere he wants on the pitch and he has, in every sense of the word, warranted such freedom. But we’ve all seen how that affected players, such as Philippe Coutinho, who never got to express themselves because their roles were maybe more unfamiliar or even limiting at Barcelona.
It would be a catastrophe if Griezmann ended up going down a similar path, especially considering how expensive he was to bring in. Valverde will absolutely have to find an optimal system in which Messi and Griezmann can co-exist so that both players’ strengths are emphasised and utilised.
Maybe it sounds simple. After all, they are two world-class players when everything is said and done but Griezmann, just like Messi, enjoyed a certain dose of freedom at Atletico Madrid and was their main man throughout all those years he spent in the capital.
Now it will be up to Valverde to make sure he remains as successful at Barcelona as he was under the stern hands of Diego Simeone prior to his big-money move to Catalonia. The first three games Barcelona played were packed with mixed results. After all, Blaugrana registered a win, a draw and a defeat but there’s one key thing to note about those matches: they were all played without Messi.
Whatever tactics we saw on the pitch back then can effectively be thrown out of the window because once Messi returns, they will undoubtedly look far, far different. Usually, of course, that means a change for the good but Valverde’s goal should be to minimise that “Messidependencia” as much as possible.

The Argentine is, after all, already taking strides in his 30s and won’t be here in the squad forever, as much as everyone would love him to be.
It remains to be seen what kind of a change in tactics the return of the little magician will stimulate and how exactly Valverde will make sure he and Griezmann complement each other on the pitch next time out.
With their start to the new 2019/20 season as shaky as they come, there won’t be much room for error or improvisation.
Nottingham Forest face Derby County in one of the fiercest rivalries in English football on Tuesday night as the two sides go head-to-head in the Carabao Cup.
The Reds currently have their hands on the Brian Clough Trophy after a 1-0 victory at the City Ground back in February this year, so there’s more than just a place in the next round at stake.
And it appears that fans’ excitement has been given a monumental boost ahead of the game, as Joao Carvalho has been spotted back in training, seemingly on the brink of returning to action.

The 22-year-old ace is the club’s record transfer at £13.2m and has been absent for all five Championship games this campaign having picked up an ankle injury during pre-season.
In the Championship last term, the Portuguese midfielder netted four goals and also laid on eight assists, per Whoscored – the latter number was only bettered in his side by Joe Lolley (11).
Upon seeing Carvalho’s appearance at training, many fans reacted on Twitter.
One supporter compared the midfielder’s potential partnership with Rafa Mir to that of yesteryear with Stan Collymore and Bryan Roy, who as a pair became a lethal duo in the mid-to-late 90s.
Another member of the Forest faithful labelled him a ‘little magician’ whilst another added an image to suggest that the Reds are on their way to the Premier League.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Serge Aurier sustained a rather bizarre injury while on international duty with the Ivory Coast, after slamming his fist on a table, per the Daily Mail.
What’s the word?
Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below
The Spurs right-back is currently participating in the African Cup of Nations with his country.
But he was not included in the starting XI for the clash with Mali on Monday due to an ankle injury.
Nevertheless, Aurier still managed to hurt his wrist by animatedly slamming his fist on a table at half-time with the score at 0-0, per the aforementioned report.
He was given a splint, the Mail claim, and they quote him as saying afterwards: “We got a little heated, because in the game we were not good. I hit the table and there you go.
“At home, when things go wrong, the parents scream at us. It’s the same thing. We had to have no regrets.”
Aurier’s countrymen went on to win 1-0, with Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha scoring the winner.
A hot-head
This figures.
Anyone who has watched Aurier play will understand that he can be prone to lapses of judgement.
Indeed, he was largely a deputy to Kieran Trippier throughout the 2018/19 season and due to a combination of injury woes and not being selected, he made just eight Premier League appearances.
Aurier’s time at Spurs, though, has largely been characterised by rash fouls and he was even slammed by former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand in the 2017/18 season after giving away a penalty in a Champions League clash with Juventus.
Ferdinand said, per BT Sport via the Mail: “As a defender, I have never really rated Aurier. He’s rash and he’s let his team down far too often.”
No one can be surprised that he hurt himself in perhaps the rashest way possible, then.
According to The Sun, Manchester United may be forced to pay £350k-a-week to Marcus Rashford in order to keep him at the club and away from the clutches of Real Madrid and Barcelona.
What’s the word, then?
Well, the England international reportedly wants to stay put at Old Trafford and play for United – where he spent years in the academy – but would not find it a hardship to go and play for one of the big boys in Spain.
Alexis Sanchez’s £505k-a-week earnings have skewered the wage structure at United, and Rashford knows that all too well – he is asking for £350k-a-week due to his importance in being Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s main striker.
Could United be in the hunt for an £85m blockbuster signing this summer? Check out the video below…
Madrid reportedly invited Rashford’s brothers – who are his advisers – to a game, whilst Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde is a big fan of the 21-year-old.
He should be made an example out of
21 years of age. 13 goals last season. And on current earnings of £45k-a-week.
Rashford is still a baby in the footballing world and a club of United’s stature should not stand for being held to ransom by a footballing child.
Some of the club’s supporters have already grown tired of Rashford’s ineffective performances out on the pitch – he ended the campaign in miserable form with no goals in his final eight games.
Other than Sanchez’s huge earnings, there is no valid argument for Rashford to earn that much – it would place him on £150k more per week than Mohamed Salah earns in comparison.
£150k-a-week, coincidentally, is just £30k less than what PFA Player of the Year Virgil van Dijk earns. How on earth can Rashford justify asking for so much?
With just 12 months left on his deal, United shouldn’t pander to the youngster’s demands and should make an example out of him by allowing him to leave the club.
He could easily be replaced, and is simply pushing his luck in asking for so much money. He may be a local lad, but United can’t be pushed around by sentiment either.
