Bangladesh struggle against the tide

While Chris Gayle was setting off enough fireworks to keep Harare lit up through a month of powercuts, Bangladesh’s squad were doing a drill which involved walking while held back by a resistance band. It was a powerful contrast: on television, one man was batting with the freedom of a escaped prisoner; on the field, 18 others were being stifled as they tried to move forward.Ask around and many will say that is their impression of Bangladesh’s Test cricket. Although they have made definite strides in the shorter versions, their latest Test defeat smacked of regression. Those involved don’t agree, however. “We know we didn’t play as well as we could have,” Shane Jurgensen, the Bangladesh coach, said. “We have come here to win but at the same time we know that Zimbabwe are a tough opponent.”Losing a game is not ideal, especially as it was a game a lot of people may have expected us to win. But if you actually look at the record of Zimbabwe in their own country, they have performed quite well, so I don’t understand why people seem to be very upset.”The anger is perfectly plausible: Bangladesh came to Zimbabwe as favourites and their opposition was knotted in turmoil. To lose by a margin as big as 335 runs was more of an embarrassment than it was just disappointing and it has set them back. Bangladesh must win the second Test to avoid their 38th series defeat. They can start by batting in completely the opposite fashion to Gayle. “We didn’t play with any patience and we need to improve that,” Jurgensen said. “We just have to bat for longer. We did not last until the second new ball in each innings, we had no partnerships or players batting for long periods.”Bangladesh’s highest partnership was 53 runs and although Mohammad Ashraful spent more than two hours at the crease in both innings, only one other batsman, Jahurul Islam, showed the same kind of staying power. “We have to be very disciplined in our approach to every ball, and do our basics right on this surface, which is a little bit foreign to us,” Jurgensen said. The surface may have had an effect but too often the Bangladesh batsmen got frustrated when runs dried up and Zimbabwe used that to their advantage. “We know that they are pretty attacking players and that if you starve them for runs, they create chances,” Brendan Taylor, Zimbabwe’s captain, said.Mahmudullah was one of the players guilty of that and his position at No. 4 has been questioned but Jurgensen indicated his time had not run out just yet. “In the second innings he looked a bit more himself and it was a shame that he got out,” he said. “He probably put a little pressure on himself but in the second innings he was looking positive, and played like the Mahmudullah we know. His footwork was positive.”While impatience was the problem with the bat, a lack of creativity hindered Bangladesh in the field. Mushfiqur Rahim was over-reliant on his left-arm spinner Enamul Haque Jr, under-bowled Sohag Gazi and did not have a third seamer to back up Robiul Islam and Rubel Hossain.”We should have probably picked three quicks but we went with our strength,” Jurgensen said. “We just didn’t bowl well enough for long enough. There were periods where we probably could have attacked them more, with different types of deliveries and different methods.”As a similar surface awaits them, Bangladesh may consider including one of Shafiul Islam or Ziaur Rahman and they will still rely heavily on Robiul. He was, by some distance, their best bowler and can be expected to exploit conditions again but Zimbabwe claim to have come up with a strategy. “We’ve done some video analysis and we’ve come up with ways to counter him – leave him a lot and play him straight rather than across the line,” Taylor said. And then there is the third department – fielding. While Zimbabwe seemed to have returned to the committed unit they were known to be, Bangladesh put down crucial chances, including Taylor on 35 in the first innings. “In recent times we have been fielding quite well, we just missed a couple of catches on that day,” Jurgensen said. “Our slip fielding has been quite good, we have taken some good catches, but yes we have dropped some unfortunately. All I can say is that we are working hard on it.”The amount of time Bangladesh have put into training confirms Jurgensen’s claims that they are practising at every opportunity. Their sessions are lengthy, well-organised and cover all departments intensely. But, it may be quality not quantity that’s needed. It may also be that the mental preparation is as important as the technical, especially because Jurgensen emphasised that concentration has to form a big part of their game in the next match. “Once the players cross that line they have to make sure they are concentrating every ball. There is a real fine focus,” he said. And that has to apply for much longer than the length of a Gayle IPL innings. “That’s what’s really important in Test cricket, you have to play five days. We only played two days in the first Test and the other two days we were pretty terrible. We need to improve that and make sure we compete for five days. If we do that we will get the result we want.”

Shastri: Kohli retired from Tests without regret

Shastri revealed that he spoke to Kohli ahead of the announcement

Pujara: Kohli brought a shift in India’s fitness culture as captain

Ravi Shastri has revealed that he had a personal conversation with Virat Kohli prior to his Test retirement, which convinced Shastri that the time was right for the decision. Shastri was India’s coach for the majority of Kohli’s tenure as captain and said that Kohli has no regrets. Shastri believes Kohli can still make big contributions in ODI’s and in franchise cricket.”I did speak to him about it [his announcement], I think a week before that and his mind was very clear that he’d given us everything,” Shastri said on . “There were no regrets. There were one or two questions I asked, and that’s a personal conversation which, you know, he mentioned very clearly, there were no doubts in his mind, which made me think, ‘Yes, the time is right’. The mind has told his body that it’s time to go.”He doesn’t have regrets. Ideally, everyone might want [him] to carry on. But then, he looks at the bigger picture. He feels he can contribute massive in the one-day game. There’s a lot of franchise cricket left for him in his life. The reason I think he will not have regrets is because he gave his everything.”Related

Kohli finished with 30 hundreds in 123 Tests across a 14-year career and was also India’s most successful captain in the format. Shastri said that juggling it all at a high intensity was a tough task across formats and Test cricket had to make way.”Individually, as a bowler, as a batsman, a player does his job, [and] then you sit back, ” Shastri said. “But [with Kohli] when the team goes out, it’s as if he has to take all the wickets, he has to take all the catches, he has to make all the decisions on the field.”That much involvement, I would think there’s going to be a burnout somewhere if he doesn’t take a rest, if he doesn’t compartmentalise how much he wants to play across formats, there is bound to be a burnout. Well, it’s happened now and he’s pulled out of Test cricket. Unfortunate, because I still think he could have played two [more] years, but he’s the boss. If his mind tells him that is enough, it’s enough.”1:10

Uthappa: ‘Winning Tests mattered to Kohli, not personal milestones’

Along with staggering peaks, Kohli has also left a cultural imprint on the format by being expressive on the field. It’s a quality that, according to Shastri, had players and viewers invested in the game.”He’s got accolades around the globe. He has a bigger following than any other cricketer in the last decade,” Shastri said. “Whether it’s Australia, whether it’s South Africa, he just got people to watch the game. There was a love-hate relationship.”They would get angry because he had the ability to get under the skin of the viewer also. In the way he celebrated, his intensity was such that it was like a rash. It spread very quickly, not just within the dressing room, but within living rooms as well for people watching cricket. So he was an infectious personality. That’s something I’ll remember.”

Worcestershire profit from hotel lease

Worcestershire have announced a profit after interest of £225,000 for the year ending September 30, 2012, a figure heavily swollen by proceeds from Premier Inn for a long-term lease for a hotel development at New Road designed to secure the county’s financial future.Without the exceptional payment of £350,000, Worcestershire would have shown a pre-tax loss of £125,000 after one of the wettest summers on record. New Road is particularly susceptible because of recurring flooding of the ground from the River Severn. In a season where Worcestershire were relegated from Division One of the championship, income fell by 12 per cent to £2.62m.Worcestershire’s annual report states: “At the club’s 2011 AGM it was noted that we had done a great deal to reduce risk, but clearly have not yet done enough to offset the extreme adverse weather in 2012. Met Office figures showed 2012 to be the second wettest summer since records began and resulted in the loss of over 15 days home and away cricket, making 2012 a real challenge.”However, we now have our Premier Inn hotel and new club facilities under construction, which is anticipated to attract 35,000-40,000 hotel visitors a year. Combined with our own new conferencing, bars and executive facilities will allow the Club to extend existing revenue streams as well as develop new areas. This will create a truly 365-day-a-year business. With a long-term, viable and sustainable future ultimately allowing further investment both on and off the pitch.”Phase 2 of Worcestershire’s ground improvements is now underway on the Severn side of the ground, which should see a 120-room hotel completed by November 2013. The report admitted: “While it is expected there will be some disruption during the 2013 season, we feel it is a small price to pay for the future benefits the facilities will bring.”

Levi ton sets up massive Cobras win

Lions topped the Momentum One Day Cup table after their last group match, against Knights, was abandoned due to rain

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Dec-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsRichard Levi’s career-best List A score powered Cape Cobras to a 111-run win against Titans in their last league match in Paarl. Levi brought up his first century this season off 68 balls after four fifties in the last five matches. He went on to score 166 with six sixes and 12 boundaries to set up Cobras strong total of 316. In a match that ended up being the preview of the semi-final between the two teams, Levi shared a 158-run first-wicket stand with Andrew Puttick and followed it up with another hundred stand with Stiaan van Zyl. Although Titans hit back with wickets towards the end of the innings, the damage had already been done upfront. In response, Titans were struck an early blow when opener Henry Davids drove a slower ball off Johann Louw straight to short midwicket and the other opener Heino Kuhn was out soon after. There was brief resistance when Mangaliso Mosehle and Martin van Jaarsveld strung together a 71-run stand for the fourth wicket, but once the partnership was broken, the Cobras bowlers mopped up the remaining wickets comfortably to secure a massive win.
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsBottom-placed Warriors finished their Momentum One Day Cup campaign with a win over Dolphins in East London – their second win of the tournament. Choosing to bat, Warriors were in early trouble as Lonwabo Tsotsobe removed the openers within the first seven overs. Warriors’ No. 3 Christiaan Jonker held one end with a solid 84 off 110 balls but didn’t receive much support from the other end. Kyle Abbott picked up four wickets as Warriors were bowled out in the 47th over.Andrew Birch boosted the defence of a middling target with a double-strike in the sixth over and added another wicket in the 12th over to reduce Dolphins to 46 for 3. However, Vaughn van Jaarsveld, who scored 71, and Cody Chetty put up a 94-run stand to put the chase back on track. Chetty scored 39 and was out to Birch when 71 were required of 19 overs giving Warriors an opening. Right-arm seamer Ayabulela Gqamane struck in his third over to remove David Miller and ran through the bottom-half of the team to pick up his maiden five-for to wrap up Dolphins’ innings in the 43rd over.
ScorecardRain forced the contest between Lions and Knights in Kimberley to be abandoned without a ball being bowled. Both teams received two points each, and with it, Lions finished the group stages of the tournament at the top of the table and secured their place in the final.Knights’ chances of grabbing a play-off spot were eliminated, as they finished fourth on the table. The teams that finished second and third in the group stages – Cape Cobras and Titans – will face-off for the remaining place in the final.

Pakistan's hunt for bowling coach continues

Pakistan will travel to Sri Lanka for their tour in June and July without a bowling coach because all applications received for the vacancy left by Aaqib Javed have been deemed unsuitable.”We aren’t able to find a suitable coach so far,” Zaka Ashraf, the PCB chairman told . “We have to reopen the process for more applicants.”The Pakistan board received applications from Ian Pont from England, the Maldives coach Bazeegh Zaka, and former Pakistan players Jalal-ud-Din, Mohsin Kamal, Sabih Azhar and Mohammad Akram. The applicants, although qualified, lacked international exposure. One of the job requirements was to have at least five years of experience in a similar role with elite cricketers and none of the applicants fulfilled that. England’s part-time spin bowling consultant Mushtaq Ahmed was also in contention but nothing was finalised because Pakistan were looking for more than a spin-bowling coach.Intikhab Alam, the head of the committee looking for the bowling coach, said the process would continue once Ashraf returned to Pakistan next week. The PCB recently appointed Dav Whatmore and Julian Fountain as head coach and fielding coach. The vacancy for bowling coach arose because Javed accepted the position of UAE’s head coach.

Centurion Rahane stars in big win for Royals

Ajinkya Rahane’s blistering century brought up the first century of IPL 2012, and delivered a big win for Rajasthan Royals

The Report by Kanishkaa Balachandran15-Apr-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAjinkya Rahane bettered his previous-best of 98 against Kings XI Punjab•AFPThe game was effectively over when the players walked off for the innings break. Ajinkya Rahane’s blistering, unbeaten 103 brought up the first century of IPL 2012, propelling Rajasthan Royals to 195 against an already battered Royal Challengers Bangalore. Assisted by Owais Shah’s equally intimidating 60, the Royals piled on a score way beyond reach for the hosts and such was the dominance that the chase turned out to be a tepid affair.Rahane also smashed six consecutive fours off an over – the first in Twenty20 history, S Aravind being the unfortunate bowler. Rahane and Shah – ten years apart – didn’t just deliver for the team’s cause but also nudged their respective national team selectors ahead of the World Twenty20, each getting two big scores so far this IPL. Their bowlers – led by Siddharth Trivedi – backed them up, hitting their targets like efficient salesmen, getting six batsmen bowled.Ironically, the losing side had the bigger names. With the likes of Daniel Vettori, Muttiah Muralitharan and Zaheer Khan to contend with, it appeared as if the Royals worked to the plan of exploiting the less-experienced Indian bowlers. It was an extension of Royal Challengers’ affliction from the match against Chennai Super Kings, when Virat Kohli leaked 28 off the penultimate over of the game.At one stage, Aravind conceded 48 off three overs, almost the same number given away by Zaheer, Vettori and Murali off ten combined overs. A less-than-fit Chris Gayle, recovering from a groin injury, came on in the 16th over more as an act of desperation by Vettori and didn’t fare any better than the other weak links, leaking 21.The hammering Rahane dished out was reminiscent of Brendon McCullum’s butchering at the same venue in the IPL’s opening game in 2008. He began by splitting the gap past cover and backward point for two fours off Aravind in the second over. The onslaught that followed was so brutal that it’s easy to forget Zaheer bowled a maiden over to Rahane, the third of the innings. Rahane showed no such respect for Aravind the following over, taking 15 off it, including a massive hit over long-on.Vettori and Murali then pulled things back with five relatively quiet overs, going for 23. Vettori’s spell only widened the gap between him and the rest. He varied his pace and flight, fired in the quicker ones to keep the batsmen guessing.Rahane’s merciless approach was best illustrated in the 14th over, which produced six fours. He drove Aravind forcefully down the ground off the first two balls, scooped the third to fine leg, pulled the fourth to midwicket, drove the fifth past cover and delicately dabbed the six to third man. Aravind varied his pace and length, AB de Villiers came up to the stumps but nothing deterred Rahane.Shah began his party with a top-edged six over long leg, before ripping into Gayle. Vinay Kumar aimed for the blockhole, but somehow Shah found a way to get under the bounce and slam sixes down the ground. He brought up his fifty off just 19 balls before launching into Murali. He tried the same against a slower Zaheer delivery but was caught at long-on.At the other end, Rahane started the final over needing seven for his century and he required just three balls to get there. After driving Vinay past mid-off, he flat-batted the third ball just past long-on’s grasp to bring up the landmark. The Royals hammered 113 off the last seven overs, the third-best in IPL history.Royal Challengers began the chase in enterprising manner, with Mayank Agarwal pulling the first ball for six over fine leg. But a double-strike by Pankaj Singh in the fifth over derailed the chase and took the fight out of the hosts. Agarwal was caught off a top-edge and two balls later, Gayle dragged one onto his stumps. That followed a period of prolonged struggle for Royal Challengers, stumbling against the asking rate, compounded by the steady fall of wickets. The boundary drought lasted an unforgivable 37 deliveries and that was thanks largely to Trivedi’s nagging line and slower deliveries bowled from back of a length, assisted by the slow pitch. De Villiers played on to one that kept low, Kohli and Saurabh perished swinging across the line, before Vettori lost his leg stump giving the bowler the charge. Trivedi’s 4 for 23 was his personal best in the IPL and the combined efforts launched the Royals to the top of the table.

Tamim, Nasir Hossain shine in truncated game

ScorecardIn another rain-affected match in the Bangladesh Cricket Board Cup, Bangladesh bowled out Bangladesh A cheaply before Tamim Iqbal helped them ease past a revised target. Bangladesh A were bowled out for 167 in 46.3 overs before rain intervened. Bangladesh were given a D/L target of 100 runs from 20 overs and got there with five overs to spare.Seamer Nazmul Hossain outshone Bangladesh’s pace spearhead Shafiul Islam, giving his side two early breakthroughs. Then the spinners took over: Abdur Razzak, who has been named captain of Bangladesh for this tournament, took 3 for 25, and 19-year-old Nasir Hossain bagged four wickets for just 29 runs in his ten overs. Nasir impressed on international debut during the ODIs against Zimbabwe, scoring a half-century, and now showed what he is capable of with his offspin. There were not too many contributions from the Bangladesh A batsmen, with only Saghir Hossain and Mahmudullah getting past 30.Tamim made light work of the total, smashing 10 fours and a six in his unbeaten 66 off 51 balls. He lost the vice-captaincy after the Zimbabwe tour and has responded with consecutive half-centuries in this tournament. Both teams had already qualified for the final of the tournament, which will be played on September 21.
