Tottenham: Spurs Pushing For "Golden Generation" Signing

A report has shared some promising news on Tottenham Hotspur and their chase to sign Gent striker Gift Orban this summer.

Who will Spurs replace Kane with?

The north Londoners could receive as much as £103 million for the sale of former star striker Harry Kane, if certain add-ons are met, as chairman Daniel Levy is now tasked with putting that windfall to good use.

Ange Postecoglou must contend without a guaranteed 25 goal-per-season striker after losing Kane, but Spurs did manage to put two past Brentford last weekend in a 2-2 draw, thanks to goals from Cristian Romero and Emerson Royal.

Spurs have been linked with a host of replacements for Kane, including the likes of Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun, Juventus star Dusan Vlahovic, Chelsea's Romelu Lukaku, Montpellier's Elye Wahi and Orban.

Postecoglou has had time to draw up a shortlist of striker candidates, as the Australian admitted last week that he saw Kane's departure coming for a long time.

“I had a conversation with Harry the first day he arrived and he was up front and honest, and I was the same,” the 57-year-old said.

“You get an indication there that he kind of made up his mind: that if the clubs agreed he would go, particularly if it was before the first game. That was my preference as well.

“There's nothing along the way that's sort of made me feel there's anything other than this outcome."

Going back to Orban, who has been in red-hot form for Gent recently, it is believed that Tottenham are set to step up their chase for the Nigerian.

That is according to Belgian news outlet Voetbal Nieuws, as translated and shared by Sport Witness, who say Spurs are "increasingly pressing" to sign Orban in the final two weeks of this transfer window.

It's added that Gent's manager, Hein Vanhaezebrouck, believes that his departure is "inevitable", leaving him to omit Orban from the starting eleven for their past few matches.

The Belgian side want €30 million (£26m) to part ways with the African, who they believe can bring them a "jackpot" transfer fee.

This backs other reports that Tottenham are ready to bid for Orban, and while that hasn't materialised just yet, it could very well one to watch.

How good is Gift Orban?

Gift Orban

The forward has picked up where he left off last season, having already scored five goals in four matches for Gent in all competitions.

Orban bagged an exceptional 20 goals in 22 appearances overall during the 2022/2023 season, with members of the media taking real note of his exploits.

Journalist Ryan Taylor, taking to X recently, praised the player as one of Nigeria's new "golden generation" – adding that he's "making waves" in Europe alongside Victor Boniface and Tolu Arokodare.

"Gift Orban, Victor Boniface & Tolu Arokodare. Remember these names," wrote Taylor.

"Making waves in Belgium & on European stage. Throw in Victor Osimhen & Terem Moffi – future looks very bright for Nigeria. Quickly approaching a golden generation for the Super Eagles."

At just £26 million, we believe Orban is surely a steal amid this heavily-inflated market.

Rangana Herath out of Delhi Test with back injury

Sri Lanka are likely to name legspinner Jeffrey Vandersay as the replacement for the Test that starts in Delhi on December 2

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Nov-20170:34

Quick Facts – Herath’s unimpressive numbers against India

Rangana Herath has been ruled out of the third Test against India, with Sri Lanka Cricket confirming the left-arm spinner has injured his back*. Legspinner Jeffrey Vandersay, who is uncapped in Tests, is likely to be named as replacement for the match which starts in Delhi on December 2.Herath went wicketless in the first Test on a seamer-friendly pitch in Kolkata but contributed with a handy 67 to hand Sri Lanka a crucial lead of 122 runs in the first innings. In Nagpur, where the Indian spinners picked 13 wickets, Herath finished with figures of 39-11-81-1 as India had to bat only once.Despite troubling the Indian batsmen in the first Test, Sri Lanka’s bowlers picked only six wickets in the second Test and will be without their most experienced bowler now. Vandersay brings with him an experience of 11 ODIs and seven T20Is in which he has collected 14 wickets in all. His ODI average is an unimpressive 43 but he has an economy rate of 5.74 which rises to 7.37 in T20Is.Sri Lanka also have left-arm wristspinner Lakshan Sandakan in the squad who has played seven Tests but went wicketless in the tour game in Kolkata before the Test series.

'Gut feel' selections regain Ashes

Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann has revealed the national selectors relied on “gut feel” calls to assemble the team that regained the Ashes in Perth, namely the choices of Tim Paine, Shaun and Mitchell Marsh. All three decisions attracted plenty of scrutiny: Paine had not been Tasmania’s first choice wicketkeeper in recent first-class matches, Shaun Marsh averaged only 39 in the three Sheffield Shield games before the Gabba Test and Mitchell Marsh appeared to be rushed back after shoulder surgery had left him playing primarily as a batsman.

‘One innings doesn’t make a career’

Mitchell Marsh cannot afford to rest on the laurels he gained from a breakthrough century in the Perth Ashes Test and has already been counselled to improve his bowling by the coach Darren Lehmann.
For all the emotion attached to Marsh’s display, Lehmann offered stick as much as carrot to the young allrounder while acknowledging the progress he had made. The retention of Pete Handscomb in the squad is a reminder that Australia’s selectors still see Marsh as a conditional option.
“The challenge for him is to back that up again to be perfectly honest,” Lehmann said. “One innings doesn’t make a cricket career. For him he’s got to back that up next game and do the right thing and continue to make runs. I thought his bowling was a little bit disappointing, which he spoke about with me the other day. He’s got to get his bowling right, his fielding right and his batting and if it all comes together that’s fantastic.
“It’s quite emotional when you see Swamp and Shaun, Swampy’s had an unbelievable two weeks for the Marsh family with Adelaide and now here. But Mitchell went back to refine his game a little bit, worked with some different people, and just looked like he enjoyed himself out there and that’s the key to those sorts of guys, those allrounders, you have allrounders in any team if you can. That was obviously really hard on Pete [Handscomb] missing out in this game, but the way Mitchell played was exceptional and really drove us to that total.”

However, in each case, the selectors were rewarded, as Paine has showcased his skills behind the stumps while also adding important runs, Shaun Marsh played handily in Brisbane and pivotally in Adelaide, before Mitchell Marsh bludgeoned England in the company of the captain Steven Smith in the last Ashes Test at the WACA Ground.”We were just going with gut feel to be perfectly honest and really pleased for the players that they turned up and played really well,” Lehmann said. “I was impressed with each one of those selections and the way they turned up in the series so far.”There is [satisfaction for getting calls right] I suppose but full credit to Trevor [Hohns] and Mark [Waugh] and Greg [Chappell] for that. Yes I’m on the selection panel but it’s a tough, thankless job, it’s just pleasing those guys get the credit where it’s due to be perfectly honest.”Those guys we picked were fantastic. You don’t know how it’s going to go when you first start and you cop a lot from people and media. That’s the way it is, so really pleased for the selection panel.”There was enormous relief in the Australian set-up after securing the Ashes at home, and Lehmann spoke frankly of the pressure the team and Cricket Australia had felt to deliver a winning result after defeat in England in 2015.”Ashes cricket is high pressure, everybody is nervous every ball, every session,” Lehmann said. “It’s been that way for 15 days so far, so they can go and express themselves a little bit more. We’ll be playing the same brand of cricket but obviously with less pressure on us. it’ll be interesting to see how we respond to that. Boxing Day and SCG are fantastic Test matches to be a part of.”It was extremely satisfying for the lads, they’ve worked so hard over the last few months to get the prep right, the way we played. The planning came together, so all credit to the players, the support staff were fantastic. The work behind the scenes was great. I’ve loved the way we have gone about it in all three Tests.”It was a lot closer than what the scores relate to. Certainly in Brisbane they had the upper hand at certain stages, but the captain was brilliant there. Obviously the bowlers were great in the second innings to get the job done. Adelaide was close and this one – albeit by an innings – it was still close, it came down to magnificent bowling from our quicks on the last day. It was a great day, the way the boys played.”Speaking about Smith, who has utterly dominated the series with the bat and led expertly for the most part, Lehmann said the 28-year-old could now be ranked with Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting and may well pass them by the end of his career.Ryan Pierse/Getty Images

“He’s running pretty hot isn’t he? I’ve been lucky enough to see all of his Test hundreds,” Lehmann said. “So for me, seeing him evolve from that first Test hundred at the Oval to now – he just changes his own plans to what the bowlers are doing and what the wicket’s doing, and what the game needs. He’s gone to another level, which is pleasing.”By the end it might be a bit different, but Pup and Ricky Ponting at times were exceptional captains and exceptional batters, when they were leading the team. Statistically you only see that at the end I suppose, but the way he’s gone about it, averaging 72 or 73 as a Test captain, that’s pretty special. For him to keep delivering what he needs to do is exceptional under the pressure he’s under in Ashes series.”Having won a second consecutive home Ashes series win, Lehmann was quick to point out that the Australians needed to replicate their mastery of the “big moments” away from home. A tour of South Africa looms and there will also be a trip to India before the 2019 World Cup and Ashes double in England. A youngish team led by Smith and with a high-class bowling attack now has the chance to grow together.”That’s the game itself, winning the big moments and transferring the pressure back to the other side,” Lehmann said. “I think we’ve done that really well in the first three Tests matches. It’s something we have to do when we travel away.”You’re always learning lessons whether home or away, as a coach, as a player, support staff, you’re always learning. They’ve got some good young players, we’ve managed to put them under pressure at the right times, and hopefully that continues for the next two Test matches. But some of those players will be involved in the next Ashes series, so we’ve got to make sure we keep evolving our plans and being better.”I’m pretty sure they can hang together, this group, they’re young enough to play for a few years together and that was the key 12 months ago even though we’ve changed some of those younger players. This group can hang together for the next 12-18 months and we’ve got to always evolve and get better at how we play and who we select and see where we go.”

Fulham: Silva Holds Talks To Sign "Fast" World Cup Star

Fulham are eyeing a late move for versatile Leicester City defenderTimothy Castagne as Sky Sports share details out of Craven Cottage.

Who will Fulham sign?

The 2022/2023 season represented a real success for Marco Silva, as his side comfortably swerved relegation and even contended for a Europe over a large period of the campaign.

Fulham even finished above west London rivals Chelsea and sealed a place in the top half, giving the Whites a solid foundation to build upon this term.

How they tackle the remaining summer transfer window, which concludes in just nine days, will be a crucial factor to their success. Silva's men, though, have signed just three players so far.

Defender Calvin Bassey swapped Ajax for Fulham in a deal worth £18.2 million, while Mexico international striker Raul Jimenez joined from Wolves and winger Adama Traore signed as a free agent.

Silva, speaking to the media earlier this month, candidly admitted that he needs his club to make more signings before September 1 particularly at full-back and other areas.

"Unfortunately, we need many still. We have some important players injured,” Silva said.

“I hope they can come sooner. We have just two full backs, we need a midfielder too and we have just two wingers so we need another two wingers.

“We have completed our central defenders. I needed these players 15 days or 20 days ago, not now.”

The departure of star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic to Saudi side Al-Hilal also means Fulham may need to scour the market for a replacement, with Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun now heavily linked.

In terms of new winger, talks for Chelsea ace Callum Hudson-Odoi have stalled, and it is currently unclear who they're targeting as an alternative.

The full-back chase is another crucial factor for Silva, but according to Sky Sports, they have set their sights on a late move for Castagne of Leicester.

The Belgium international, who featured at last year's World Cup in Qatar, has dropped to the Championship with Leicester and we presume he could be open to a Premier League return.

Leicester's Timothy Castagne

Sky claim Fulham are targeting Castagne as we approach the final week of this summer window, and it is claimed that talks have already been held with the Foxes.

The 27-year-old is yet to feature under Leicester boss Enzo Maresca this season, putting his future into some question, and this could well be an opportunity for Fulham to pounce.

How good is Timothy Castagne?

If Silva wishes to reinforce his right-back area with experience and quality, Castagne may well be the right man.

According to WhoScored, the former Atalanta star was an untouchable for Leicester in the top flight last season, having featured more regularly than any other member of their squad over 22/23.

Castagne ranked among their best-performers by average match rating that year (WhoScored), with his versatility coming as another big draw.

Timothy Castagne

Indeed, the defender can play anywhere across the defence, at centre-back or full-back, not to mention further out wide.

Former Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers, speaking after his side completed a deal for Castagne in 2020, revered the player for his speed and application.

"I’ve watched Timothy Castagne for a number of years – he fits the profile of how I want to work," said Rodgers.

"He’s fast, non-stop running – he wants to score but he can defend – good composure. He’s a brilliant signing for us. He’ll prove to be a really good asset for us.”

West Ham Could Forget Paqueta By Signing ‘Electric’ £34m Star

West Ham United may have begun the summer transfer window at a pedestrian pace, but they are now speeding through a plethora of different deals.

David Moyes has signed Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse, spending the cash raised from the sale of Declan Rice wisely and there are likely to be more arrivals before the window closes in just under three weeks.

With this in mind, the Hammers could now make a move for one of the most highly sought-after talents on the continent; Mohammed Kudus.

Who else could West Ham sign?

Fabrizio Romano dropped an update on West Ham’s interest in the Ajax starlet on Monday.

He took to social media, saying: “West Ham now open initial talks to sign Mohammed Kudus — priority target in case Lucas Paquetá leaves to join Manchester City.

“Positive talks on player side, Kudus open to the move — still waiting to approach Ajax as deal will depend on Paquetá.”

Read the latest West Ham transfer news HERE…

Brighton & Hove Albion reached an agreement in principle with the Dutch club to sign Kudus for a fee of €40m (£34.5m), yet no move has materialised, and it looks as though West Ham are looking to swoop in and hijack any potential deal.

Is Lucas Paqueta leaving West Ham?

Current West Ham star Lucas Paqueta could soon be on his way out of the club, with Manchester City showing plenty of interest and even having a £70m bid rejected by the club recently.

Pep Guardiola isn’t ready to give in just yet and another bid could soon be made, but Moyes should take the money and invest it in Kudus, forgetting about the Brazilian in the process.

Paqueta did enjoy a solid debut campaign in England, scoring five goals and registering seven assists while ranking fourth for shots on target per game (0.6), creating three big chances and making 1.1 key passes per game, good enough to rank him sixth and fourth across the squad in the Premier League.

What is Mohammed Kudus’ style of play?

That was an encouraging start for Paqueta, yet the 5 foot 9 frame of Kudus was far more impressive for Ajax.

The 23-year-old scored 18 goals and grabbed seven assists across all competitions for the Eredivisie side, clearly posing a much greater danger going forward.

Kudus also ranked fourth for shots on target per game across the Ajax squad domestically last term (0.9) and he also created four big chances and made one key pass per game, similar figures to Paqueta.

mohammed-kudus-transfer-gossip-ajax-arteta-bukayo-saka-arteta-edu

When compared to positional peers, it is clear who has enjoyed the better 12 months. Kudus ranks in the top 2% of positionally similar players in divisions comparable to the Eredivisie for non-penalty goals, pass completion percentage and successful take-ons per 90, while ranking in the top 3% for touches in the opposition box, showcasing his attacking qualities.

In contrast, the Brazilian only ranked in the top 25% for pass completion percentage while ranking outwith the top 60% for both successful take-ons and non-penalty goals per 90 when compared to positional peers in Europe's top five leagues.

The “electric” starlet – as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig – could be the perfect fit for Moyes at West Ham, and he should be doing everything he can to secure his signature.

The Scot could forget all about Paqueta in the process.

Man United: Signing 5 ft 8 Luke Shaw replacement could be Weghorst 2.0

Manchester United were rocked by news of Luke Shaw's cruel injury blow just a few days ago.

As a result of that, the Red Devils could turn their attention to the transfer market in order to solve such a problem.

When will Luke Shaw return from injury?

The club fear that the left-back's injury blow is now worse than they originally thought.

Indeed, Shaw has suffered a muscular injury and according to Manchester Evening News, he could now be out for up to two months, meaning we may well not see him in action again until late October.

United initially suggested that the England international would miss just weeks of action, rather than months.

Who could replace Luke Shaw at Man United?

Erik ten Hag is currently without a senior left-back with Shaw's understudy, Tyrell Malacia also currently nursing an injury.

One idea could be to move Lisandro Martinez to a left-back berth but another option is to attack the transfer market before it closes on Friday evening.

Luke Shaw

According to Fabrizio Romano, one target is Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella.

The journalist took to social media on Saturday evening to say: "Manchester United made contact with Chelsea to ask about conditions of Marc Cucurella deal on potential loan — no bid or concrete talks yet."

How good is Marc Cucurella?

Sadly the answer is not very. The Spaniard burst onto the Premier League scene with Brighton where his electric displays down the left flank were captivating.

Indeed, during the 2021/22 campaign, Cucurella ranked inside the best 14% of left-backs in the Premier League for progressive carries and the top 12% of positionally similar players for progressive passes, as per FBref.

Only 10% of left-backs completed more passes and more passes into the final third than the now 25-year-old who was playing for Brighton at the time.

Fast forward to the current day and the 5 foot 8 full-back is now a "liability" at Chelsea, as reporter Josh Bunting put it.

The 2022/23 term saw Cucurella rank among the best 55% of full-backs for progressive carries and the top 39% for progressive carries. That is some regression and indicative of the woeful spell he has endured at Stamford Bridge.

Defensively he has been rather inept, ranking inside the best 74% for interceptions and best 77% for percentage of dribblers tackled.

Seemingly now error-stricken at the back and lacking in attacking capabilities, this would mark another poor deal for Ten Hag and co.

Only in January did they opt for the short-term option in Wout Weghorst and we all know how that went.

As Cristiano Ronaldo took his leave and Man United failed to find an adequate replacement, the Dutchman was brought in on a temporary basis.

wout-weghorst-man-united-everton-premier-league-transfers

However, after failing to score in all 17 of his Premier League appearances for the club, it's safe to say the move was a disaster.

United do need a left-back, that much is true, but a short-term option for a player as out of form and out of favour as Cucurella would do them no favours. Indeed, it could be another repeat of their Weghorst disaster.

The club's recruitment team are better off searching for alternatives here.

Tottenham: Ange Could Seal Lennon Repeat by Signing "Electric" £30m Gem

Tottenham Hotspur have suddenly come into a vast amount of money with the sale of Harry Kane, which will likely be burning a hole in Ange Postecoglou's pocket…

Who are Tottenham Hotspur signing?

With these huge riches hopefully set to be reinvested in a playing squad that has already sufficiently bolstered this summer, it promises to accelerate their Australian revolution tenfold, despite the massive amount of quality lost with his departure.

However, to make up for the goals they are set to miss, perhaps portions of the sum received could be distributed across various signings, bringing in two or three attacking stars to nurture and offset such a crushing blow.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

One such name that could arguably be a perfect acquisition is Wilfried Gnonto, who has made his feelings clear to Championship side Leeds United with regard to his plans for the future.

The Italy international is refusing to play, whilst the Elland Road outfit responded by issuing a statement that they are unwilling to sell, which isn't ideal for either party.

Despite that, the £30m price tag set could easily be attained by the Lilywhites, who have been credited with an interest in recent weeks.

How good is Wilfried Gnonto?

In taking advantage of the relegated Whites to sign a tricky winger, it is hard not to draw comparisons with their 2005 acquisition of Aaron Lennon, who quickly turned into a fan favourite in north London.

However, there are far more similarities between these two speedsters than just the career path they are set to take, as a couple of dynamic but diminutive wide men.

Standing at 5 foot 5 and 5 foot 7 respectively, the now-retired Englishman arrived at a cut-price £1m amidst the financial turmoil of the time in west Yorkshire.

wilfried-gnonto-1

The 36-year-old would go on to feature 364 times for Spurs, and despite never really being particularly prolific, remained a constant starter throughout the bulk of his ten years at the club, posting 79 assists.

Praised for his various assets, Andre Villas-Boas sought to outline one particularly starring performance in 2013:

"Aaron Lennon is such a magnificent player and sometimes he does not get the recognition he deserves but his form has been extraordinary. He has been magnificent for us, scoring goals like last week, and is such a good player."

Then, after bravely admitting his struggles with mental illness, Mauricio Pochettino would praise his character:

"The fact Aaron spoke publicly about the issue can inspire people around the world, not only in football, through him or through his behaviour, to get some help.

"Because Aaron spoke publicly that there are a lot of people ready to help people with temporary mental [health] issues, it's good for him to get the love from the fans and inspire people to get the same help and talk about it."

His blistering speed often offsets his lack of physicality, which is a trait he shares with Gnonto.

The 19-year-old star took to English football with ease despite only joining last summer, with his eight goal contributions across all senior English competitions marking an admirable return during a debut term.

He would also rank in the top 18% for progressive carries per 90, suggesting he would add excitement that has been somewhat lacking in recent seasons.

Football scout Jacek Kulig could have been describing Lennon when he wrote of Gnonto: "Electric pace, stature, low centre of gravity, mobility, bravery and powerful finish."

Should Spurs capitalise on Leeds' misery once again, hopefully earning more silverware than they did during the tenure of the former Everton gem, this could prove another impressive coup to emphasise Postecoglou's early-tenure success.
