Move over Rutter: Farke could hand "clinical" 6 ft 1 Leeds dud his last chance

Leeds United seem to have finally stabilised after a rocky start to the new Championship season, with Daniel Farke now settled on what his best XI roughly looks like.

With much of the debate having surrounded the positioning of Joel Piroe and Georginio Rutter, it is the latter who is certainly beginning to prove his astronomical worth.

How is Georginio Rutter playing?

As a truly foolish Jesse Marsch purchase, brought in for a club-record fee, the Frenchman was instantly handed the burden of securing Premier League safety, despite being far from the requisite level.

Having now had ample time to acclimatise to English football, Elland Road is playing host to a true masterclass, with the Frenchman seemingly putting on a show every week.

His five goal contributions in ten league games mark a fine return, and are further upheld through his 2.6 key passes per game and 2.2 successful dribbles per game, via Sofascore. He is gliding past the opposition with ease, but seems to have unlocked the true creativity within to allow him to forge opportunities for his teammates.

As such, his boss is always keen to praise him: "I think we can be absolutely happy with him, his work ethic. He is great in linking the play. He is still a relatively young lad, it's important that we were concentrated on scoring the first goal. He had great assists, it was a top-class performance. He deserves all the praise."

With that in mind, it still draws question marks over his credentials as a lone striker, with his skillset clearly much more preferable for an attacking midfielder.

Although Farke spoke in length on his reasons behind the strange combinations he and Piroe undergo, perhaps following the international break he could seek to return Rutter to his natural role, and instead hand Patrick Bamford one final chance to impress before shutting the door on a fine Leeds career that reached lofty heights, but recently has fell to impossible lows.

How good is Patrick Bamford?

Whilst the Englishman's failures in front of goal from last season are likely still fresh in the memory, having first missed a late sitter against Leicester City before seeing his penalty saved by Nick Pope, there remains a top forward just waiting to be unleashed once again.

Leeds forward Georginio Rutter.

After all, the 30-year-old was once instrumental in their 2020 promotion push, before taking his game to new levels upon their Premier League return before injury struck.

It should come as no surprise that the two relegation battles came as the 6 foot 1 dud would only make seven and 18 starts in those respective campaigns.

During that remarkable Championship term, Bamford would score 16 and assist four before somehow improving that in the top flight, firing in a further 17 and assisting eight more.

He has showcased his class in the past, and with Piroe now there to ease the goalscoring burden, perhaps his return to fitness could prove incredibly profitable as they seek to earn another promotion.

Leeds striker Patrick Bamford.

After all, only three years ago saw journalist Phil Hay laud the marksman "clean and clinical", which is a claim many would refute nowadays.

Whilst either of the striker or number ten currently featuring could move aside for Bamford, allowing him to take one last opportunity, perhaps the versatile Rutter could be preferred, and pushed either out wide or deeper into midfield to facilitate one last dance for the former Chelsea man.

Early bragging rights up for grabs for England or India in T20 decider

It’s all to play for in the final T20I in Bristol as England and India seek the first spoils on offer in a long contest

The Preview by Andrew McGlashan07-Jul-2018Big PictureIf there wasn’t enough crunch sporting action involving England this weekend, now there is more. This T20 series has a decider after Alex Hales levelled things up at 1-1 by keeping calm in Cardiff as the chase became a little dicey. Both teams are well set up for chasing, so that is likely to be the favoured route in Bristol. England learnt from most of their mistakes at Old Trafford to ensure India’s spinners had much less of an impact in Cardiff. It also helped they knew their target – which wasn’t overly demanding – and didn’t have to use all-out aggression against the spinners.India did well to push the match into the final over – and with England needing 20 off two overs, then 12 off the last would have still fancied their chances – but their poor start with the bat ultimately cost them after losing three wickets in the Powerplay. It wasn’t until the final over of the innings from Jake Ball, which cost 22, that they really got away from England. It is still very early in this long tour and whoever wins this series will probably not be what is remembered come early September, but there are early bragging rights on offer with the victors also getting reassurance that they are heading along the right path towards the next global event in 2020.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)
England WLWLL
India LWWWWIn the spotlightBen Stokes is available again after the hamstring injury which has ruled him out of England action since the first Test against Pakistan in May. It creates a selection dilemma. How does he fit back in the side? It is unlikely he would be selected as one of five bowlers, so that leaves one of the batsmen vulnerable. Hales keeps making runs, Jonny Bairstow looks in terrific nick even down the order as does Jason Roy at the top while Eoin Morgan is captain. On form, Joe Root could be the one to miss out but before the series Paul Farbrace said he was a certainty for the T20 side. Something has to give, or is it a case that Stokes doesn’t come straight back?Shikhar Dhawan has missed out twice in the series – bowled by David Willey at Old Trafford and then run out in slightly comical fashion in Cardiff when he dropped his bat then couldn’t get his foot grounded across the crease in time. Even before his dismissal he had struggled for momentum, striking at less than a run-a-ball against some tight England pace bowling. He’ll be keen to find his groove before the ODIs. He also needs 28 runs for 1000 in T20IsTeam newsThere’s the Stokes question for England (see above) and if he was to return as one of six bowlers it could open the way for a second spinner again, after Moeen Ali was left out in Cardiff. However, that would appear unlikely given the effectiveness of England’s quicks for the majority of the innings on Friday evening.England (probable) 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jos Buttler (wk), 3 Alex Hales, 4 Joe Root/Ben Stokes, 5 Eoin Morgan (capt), 6 Jonny Bairstow, 7 David Willey, 8 Liam Plunkett, 9 Chris Jordan, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Jake BallIndia could consider increasing their spin options by including the uncapped Krunal Pandya, who bowls left-arm spin, at the expense of Suresh Raina.India (probable) 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 KL Rahul, 4, Virat Kohli (capt), 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (wk), 7 Hardik Pandya, 8 Yuzvendra Chahal, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Umesh YadavPitch and conditionsThere was more grass on the surface in Cardiff than had been the case at Old Trafford and England will be keen for similar in Bristol if the weather allows. There are short, straight boundaries which can make it a challenge for spinners. It is set to be a hot, sunny afternoon.Stats and trivia There have been just two previous T20Is at this ground, the most recent of which was back in 2011 David Willey’s 1 for 18 in Cardiff was his most economical four-over spell in T20Is Rohit Sharma need 14 runs for 2000 in T20Is. He would be the second India player to reach the milestone after Virat Kohli and fifth overall.Quotes”He’s played a lot for us – he’s one of our highest run-scorers, a very experienced campaigner. An innings like that tonight makes him a pretty strong case for the next game.”
“Kuldeep [Yadav] bowled really well in the last game – but in this one, they played him more carefully. They chose which delivery they wanted to play or not play.”

    WHAT WALKER SAID ABOUT STONES

England star Walker has revealed as much, with the City full-back telling Rio Ferdinand’s podcast of a trip to Abu Dhabi alongside his domestic and international team-mate: “John loves it [a party]. But he doesn’t drink all season. We went to Abu Dhabi, he had a little go then. But when he goes, it's bottles. It's no mixers, it's just a bottle of tequila, a bottle of jager and he’ll just drink that straight. Just 'give me the bottle' and he drinks it.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

While remaining model professionals during any given campaign, Walker admits that celebrations can get a little wild once trophies have been secured and competitive action comes to a close. He added on toasting victory in style: “I absolutely love it. How high is the high when you're celebrating with the lads? We stretch [nights out] to probably three days.”

Al-Nassr fell to a disappointing home defeat to lowly Al-Raed as goals from Karim El Berkaoui, Mohamed Fouzair, and Amir Sayoud cancelled out Ayman Yahya's strike on Thursday night. While Ronaldo himself was somewhat off colour with some big spurned chances, the 39-year-old called on his teammates to learn from this setback and come back stronger.

The result means Ronaldo's Al-Nassr are a whopping 12 points behind league leaders Al-Hilal with 11 games remaining. The Riyadh-based club are unbeaten in the league this season and if Al-Nassr are to topple them, they cannot afford to drop any more points. They also have to hope Jorge Jesus's side have a collapse in form.

Celtic can end Nancy’s nightmare by hiring “unbeatable” 4-2-3-1 manager

Celtic manager Wilfried Nancy could not have had a worse start to his tenure in charge of the club after losing for the third match running on Sunday.

The Hoops were beaten 3-1 by St Mirren in the League Cup final at Hampden Park, which means that the French boss has lost all three of his opening games.

It is the first time in Celtic history that a new manager has lost their first three games. In fact, Nancy was also the first manager to lose his first two matches after the 3-0 loss to Roma in the Europa League.

Why Wilfried Nancy should already be under pressure

As crazy as it may seem at face value, the Hoops head coach is already under pressure at Parkhead because of his historically bad start and the way that the games have unfolded.

Losing to Scottish Premiership title rivals Hearts, at home, and as favourites in the League Cup final is tough to take. The Roma game could be excused due to the quality of the opposition, but the other two results were abject.

The drastic change in formation has also come under fire from supporters and pundits. Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin questioned why Sebastian Tounekti is at wing-back and why Daizen Maeda is playing as a number ten in his punditry for the cup final.

Nancy’s 3-4-2-1 system is a big departure from what supporters at Parkhead and what the players at the club have been used to in recent seasons.

Celtic, as you can see in the table above, have traditionally been a four-at-the-back side, and that is what their squad was built to play, yet Nancy has ripped that up and endured the worst start a manager has ever had at Celtic.

Whilst it may seem incredibly reactionary, the system being implemented and the results so far suggest that Nancy is not a good fit for the Hoops, which is why they should already consider quickly ending this nightmare start by hiring Nicky Hayen.

Why Celtic should hire Nicky Hayen

The longer you watch and analyse football, the more you realise that it is less about ‘good’ and ‘bad’ managers and players and more about the fit and how well suited they are to the environment at that club.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

Nancy has come through the door at Parkhead with no experience in Europe as a manager, either domestically or in European competitions, and plays a system that does not appear to suit the squad, given Goodwin’s questions and the dismal results.

Nicky Hayen was reportedly a contender for the Celtic job last month, and Football FanCast suggested that he would have been a better option than Nancy, because he has proven himself domestically in Europe with Club Brugge, as well as in European competitions.

The Belgian boss has subsequently been sacked by Brugge, though, for losing three of his last four Pro League matches in charge of the club, in a ruthless move by their board.

That sacking should not dissuade Celtic, however, because that poor run of form does not reflect the overall job he did at the club. Hayen won three trophies in 102 matches in charge of Brugge, including one Pro League title, per Transfermarkt.

Meanwhile, Nancy won three trophies in 215 matches in the MLS and missed out on a chance to add to his silverware against St Mirren on Sunday.

As you can see in the table above, the former Club Brugge boss also has an eye-catching record in European competitions, given the size of the club he managed, reaching the last 16 in the Champions League and the semi-finals of the Conference League.

Whereas Nancy had not managed a single match on the European stage before his move to Parkhead, and lost 3-0 in his first Europa League outing against Roma.

Hayen, who was described as “tactically unbeatable” by one analyst on X, also prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation, per Transfermarkt, which suggests that he would be more suited to the way that Celtic’s players and supporters are used to.

Therefore, bringing the recently sacked Belgian to Parkhead to quickly end the Nancy nightmare could be a surprising yet brilliant move by the board, because he has the domestic and European experience behind him to suggest that he could be a success, whilst also playing a style that is a good fit for the club.

Worse than Scales: Nancy must drop 4/10 flop who cost Celtic the trophy

Wilfried Nancy must drop this Celtic flop who was even worse than Liam Scales against St Mirren.

Of course, it would be completely understandable if Celtic decide to back their man and give Nancy time, including a transfer window, but his dismal start to life in Glasgow may already be creating doubt over his suitability for the role.

West Indies to make first full tour of Bangladesh in six years

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Jul-2018West Indies are set to visit Bangladesh in November and December this year for their first full tour of the country since 2012. There will be a two-day practice match before the tour kicks off with two Tests. Three ODIs and three T20Is follow.Tour itinerary

West Indies’ visit means Bangladesh will have a packed home season, with Zimbabwe touring in October and the Bangladesh Premier League scheduled in January. The November-December window had been left empty due to the general elections scheduled in the country at that time, but, as things stand now, the West Indies series will happen alongside the elections. The last match West Indies played in Bangladesh was during the 2014 World T20. Their last bilateral tour of the country was in 2012-13. West Indies had blanked Bangladesh 2-0 in the Test series then, but the home side fought back to take the ODI series 3-2, while West Indies ended the tour with victory in the solitary T20I.The two sides are currently playing each other in the West Indies, where the home side brushed Bangladesh aside 2-0 in the two Tests but the visitors came back to win the first ODI of the ongoing three-match series. The teams will also play three T20Is.

Fuller's six pack can't deflect Hampshire from first win

ScorecardHampshire sealed their first win of their T20 Blast campaign by putting struggling Middlesex to the sword at the Ageas Bowl in a performance which hinted that suggestions of their decline as a force in the format are premature.Between 2010 and 2015, Hampshire built the first real dynasty seen in T20 cricket, as their well-drilled, methodical side reached Finals Day every season, winning the title twice. But they crashed out of the 2016 tournament with a whimper, winning only four games in the season, and fans were concerned that last year’s resurgence – which saw them edged out by eventual winners Notts in the semi-final – was nothing more than an outlier; with three losses from three in the Blast so far, another season of discontent looked on the cards. Here, Colin Munro’s all-round show helped to allay those concerns. Munro’s blistering 40-ball 63 had put Hampshire on track for a score well over 200, before an unlikely six-wicket haul from James Fuller restricted them to 184 all out.Any fears the collapse would harm them were swiftly averted: Munro added two wickets and a run out to his fiery innings as Middlesex struggled to find middle-overs momentum in their run chase, and Hampshire secured a 21-run victory. Admittedly, their performance was not entirely clinical: it featured dropped catches, wayward death bowling, and a concerning batting collapse. But with a win on the board and some much-needed confidence back in the side, Hampshire will look to gather momentum in this tournament in their bid to engender another era of domination.”I thought we left 15-20 runs out there,” Munro said. “It was a good surface, and we just lost a couple of key wickets in the middle there.”Things haven’t gone our way, but as long as you try to train the same way and prepare the same way, you’ll get results down the track, and tonight it was good to get on the board at last. We’ve still got some left in the tank, but there’s a lot of positives to take into tomorrow’s game.”After he won the toss and chose to bat, the early signs were that this would be James Vince’s night. He hit the first three balls of the innings – bowled by Steven Finn – for four, with a punch through cover point followed by two whips to the midwicket boundary. Two more sublime strokes for four followed off Paul Stirling’s first over, and Vince was motoring. But his reputation precedes him. As is so often the case, Vince got in, looked a million dollars, and got out, as he flicked Finn to deep square leg on 23. Vince has reached twenty 41 times since the start of the 2015 Blast, but has only turned twelve of those starts into fifties. It is not a statistic that will trouble him – he was on the list of the top three Blast run-scorers in two of the past three seasons – but one that will do little to convince England that he has grit as well as grace.Hampshire’s total was underpinned by Munro and Rilee Rossouw’s 72-run third-wicket stand in 7.3 overs. They knocked the ball about patiently in the middle overs, while thumping the bad balls – of which there were plenty – to the fence as Hampshire reached 122 for 2 after 12 overs.Perhaps out of desperation, Dawid Malan threw the ball to Fuller; and out of nowhere, Hampshire lost their heads. Rossouw was caught at deep cover, before Tom Alsop chopped on at the end of his first over, and Munro skied a catch to Max Holden in his second. His third saw Dawson and Berg miscue to long-on and nick off respectively, before he had Lewis McManus caught in the deep in his final over as Hampshire were bowled out for 184.Fuller’s eventual 6 for 28 was among the most improbable of six-wicket hauls. He said it was “a massive surprise to get a bowl”, given his bowling went unused in last night’s defeat to Somerset, and he was the eighth bowler that Malan turned to. Yet that still left him with ample time to return the best figures for Middlesex in a T20 as he became only the sixth man to bag six wickets in an innings in the Blast’s history. In truth, Fuller’s haul masked a shoddy Middlesex effort with the ball. Admittedly, the schedule has not been kind to them: they went 11 days without a game before last night, and Eoin Morgan and Malan’s absences due to England and Lions selection respectively have meant they are yet to have the same captain for consecutive fixtures. But it was telling that Malan and Stirling spent a minute or more discussing fields in the game’s second over; bowlers can hardly expect to succeed when strategies are being created on the spot, and Middlesex’s supporters may well start to question what Daniel Vettori has achieved in his role as T20 coach.Predictably, spin proved key in the run chase. Holden’s chancy start meant Middlesex were 45-1 after five overs, but in the final over of the powerplay, he ran himself out after Malan was caught reverse-sweeping. With the fielding restrictions lifted, Munro had Morgan caught in the deep with his skiddy medium pace as he and Dawson put the breaks on. No side has a slower scoring rate against spin in the Blast than Middlesex and it showed, with boundaries suddenly at a premium.Just as he was set to attack, John Simpson skied a catch to Vince on the edge of the ring, while Dwayne Bravo started to play his shots. He launched Dawson for two sixes down the ground, but short of any real support, he had to keep swinging, and his miscued heave off Munro was well caught by the bowler running round to square leg. With Bravo gone, Hampshire’s victory was in little doubt, and a late rally from Middlesex’s tail could not hide their shortcomings.

Same agent as JWP: West Ham set sights on £42m "Rolls Royce" – report

West Ham United are interested in a swoop to sign an experienced player, but a fresh report has revealed that they aren’t the only club who want him in the Premier League.

Who are West Ham linked with?

Since the summer, David Moyes has appeared keen to bolster his defensive ranks having been credited with an interest in Manchester United’s Harry Maguire and Fiorentina’s Martinez Quarta at centre-back, but there is also another area of the pitch he’s looking to target.

The Irons have reportedly recently sent scouts to watch Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra, but with Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Newcastle United also keeping close tabs, the boss may have to find an alternative should he fail to secure his services.

One player who he could turn his attention towards is Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips who despite still having another five years remaining on his deal (Man City contracts), could be set to depart having made zero starts and just three substitute appearances in the top-flight this season (WhoScored – Phillips statistics).

Kalvin Phillips transfer update

According to The Sun, who have shared a transfer update on Phillips, West Ham and two other clubs, one in the top-flight and the other overseas, are plotting a swoop for the 27-year-old in January:

Several clubs were interested in the summer, but the midfielder insisted he wanted to stay and fight for his place at City. Yet he is no nearer forcing his way in, and knows playing cameo roles for the rest of the season is likely to affect his England hopes.

"Newcastle, West Ham and Bayern Munich are all keen. And if City recoup close to the £42m he cost from Leeds two seasons ago, a deal could be done. They would also listen to loan offers – if the successful club covers his wages and gives a commitment to buy next summer.

"Phillips still has four-and-a-half years left on his £150,000-a-week contract, and City were resigned to paying a huge chunk of that to smooth an exit path. Yet City insiders claim the player is ready to accept around half that figure to get his career moving in the right direction again.”

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

What is Kalvin Phillips' style of play?

Being a defensive midfielder, Phillips is naturally stronger in that aspect of his game and he has excellent calmness and composure on the ball, where he’s currently recording a 90% pass success rate, and his versatility also reflects where his best qualities lie.

The Three Lions international has the ability to operate at the heart of the backline alongside three roles in the centre of the park (Transfermarkt – Phillips statistics), with some of his classic performances having previously seen him dubbed a “Rolls Royce” by journalist Josh Bunting, such is his intelligence and smoothness on the ball.

Phillips actually shares the same representative, CAA Stellar, as James Ward-Prowse (West Ham agents), so this existing connection that his management already have to the club could give the board a small advantage should they try to get a deal over the line in January.

Rangers and Clement table new deal for "brilliant" player; expected to sign

A new era awaits at Rangers, with Philippe Clement stepping into the technical area following Michael Beale's dismissal. The former AS Monaco manager doesn't exactly have an easy task on his hands, given that the Gers have already lost three games in the Scottish Premiership this season, and currently sit seven points adrift of table-toppers Celtic.

Already so far behind their Old Firm rivals, Clement may face a pressure-free start to life at Ibrox. Those at the club will know that it will not be an easy fix, and getting things right off the pitch will be the best step towards long-term improvement. And that could see one particular player sign a new contract at the club to ease any exit fears.

Latest Rangers contract news

Clement's first game in charge comes against Hibernian in a tough first test for his side. The international break could have handed him the chance to settle into life at Ibrox though, and decide just who his standout stars will be. In an ideal world, his first game will end in routine fashion to increase the confidence of his players that catching Celtic may not be such a fantasy this season.

Meanwhile, off the pitch, the latest Borna Barisic contract news is certainly positive. According to TeamTalk, the Gers have offered the left-back a new two-year deal at the club, which he is expected to sign to end any fears over a potential exit. Barisic's current contract comes to an end next summer, of course, which would allow him to start seeking his next club from January.

Having solved their managerial problem, however, Rangers have seemingly moved to put an end to any worries about the Croatian's future. After reportedly attracting interest from the likes of Nottingham Forest, it seems as though Barisic is set to stay put at Ibrox.

How has Barisic performed this season?

Glasgow Rangers defender Borna Barisic.

Much like the rest of his Rangers teammates, Barisic hasn't been at his best this season. The left-back has at least been a standout on ocassions, however, with four assists to his name, a sign that things could yet improve. At 30-years-old, the left-back represents the type of player that Clement should look to lean on in the opening months of his tenure, with experience arguably the key to helping Rangers turn things around this season.

If the new manager can get the best out of Barisic, too, then he'll have himself the perfect option down the left-hand side. In top form, the Rangers man has earned praise from Neil McCann, who told BBC Sportsound after a 2-2 draw against Hibernian: "We said Rangers are liable to burst into life at any time – they did it there. You know in the final-third, generally, you get brilliant quality from Barisic. This time he puts in a fantastic ball, begging for someone to attack it.”

When considering his experience, and ability when at his best, it's no surprise that Rangers have offered Barisic a new deal. It's now up to the left-back to decide whether or not to put pen to paper.
