Rangers could repeat Cantwell move with "powerful" late transfer

Glasgow Rangers appear to be close to securing a deal for Ivorian midfielder Mohamed Diomande if the latest reports are to be believed.

According to Danish outlet BT, the Gers have reached an agreement to sign the midfielder from FC Nordsjaelland as Philippe Clement looks to bolster his squad during the dying embers of the January transfer window.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

The 22-year-old could be an exciting arrival at Ibrox, but hopefully that won't be the only piece of business conducted by the club over the next week or so, especially with certain areas of the squad needing major overhaul.

One such position is the left-back area, as the Gers have two players who could potentially depart in the coming months.

Rangers’ search for a left-back

Borna Barisic is into the final few months of his contract and there has yet to be any discussion over an extension as of yet, indicating that it is likely he leaves Glasgow.

Ridvan Yilmaz could also be ending his stint in Scotland, as the Turkish defender is looking to leave Rangers amid interest from Galatasaray in his homeland.

Rangers defender Borna Barisic.

This suggests Clement may be left with few options on the left side of defence unless he moves to bring in some reinforcements this month, and the club have been linked with a few names of late.

One player who has emerged as a potential signing is Cameron Pring, who is currently playing for Bristol City in the Championship.

According to journalist Alan Nixon last week, the Gers are chasing a move for Pring – who is out of contract in 2026.

This suggests that the club are under no pressure to move him on this window, but if a suitable offer arrives from the Premiership club, then it could perhaps tempt them to move him on.

The Light Blues have enjoyed previous success in signing players from the English second tier during the winter window, as Todd Cantwell proved last January when he arrived for just £1.5m and dazzled during his opening months north of the border.

Todd Cantwell's numbers at Rangers

Cantwell arrived with fellow signing Nico Raskin last January and the duo made a positive start to their careers in Scotland, most notably the Englishman.

Indeed, having failed to register a single goal contribution during the first half of the season for Norwich City, Cantwell went on to score six times and grab six assists as he endeared himself to the Ibrox faithful.

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.

Despite arriving mid-season, Cantwell ranked fourth in the squad for successful dribbles per game (1.5) along with ranking sixth for big chances created (five) and sixth for goals scored (six) in the top flight, proving that he was a big influence on the team and it gave him a solid base ahead of the current campaign.

The attacking midfielder has yet to hit the heights displayed between January and May last year so far during 2023/24, but he does have seven goal contributions across 26 matches as he has appeared in a few different positions under Clement.

If the Belgian can get the 25-year-old clicking into gear during the second half of the season however, Cantwell could be a vital component of a team who is eyeing up a remarkable treble.

Pring may not be an attacking midfielder, yet he can follow in Cantwell’s footsteps and enjoy a positive transition from the Championship to the Scottish top flight and become a key player for the 49-year-old coach.

The stats that show why Pring would be a good signing

As stated, the left-back area desperately needs a refresh and Pring could be the ideal candidate to become the new first-choice player in that area under Clement.

At 26, he is just entering his prime years and the defender has made 159 senior appearances across a host of clubs in England and the spell at Bristol City has been the longest of his career so far.

Although not the most attacking left-back, Pring still managed six assists and one goal last season, while during the current campaign, he has three goal contributions.

It is his defensive skills which are his strong suit and this could be a change of direction for Clement as Barisic and James Tavernier are attacking-minded full-backs who tend to bomb up and down their respective flanks on a regular basis.

Pring does currently rank second among his teammates for successful dribbles per game (one) in the Championship however, indicating that he can push forward when required, and he also ranks second for tackles per game (2.2) and third for interceptions per game (1.4) as his defensive abilities have been on show.

Rangers Journal founder Kai Watson analysed Pring’s strengths and weaknesses amid the recent links with the 26-year-old, saying: “The first thing to note about Pring is that he’s an absolute unit. 6’1, very strong and powerful. The unusual thing about this link, compared to the other left-backs, is that he excels in the defensive areas of the game.

“He’s not the chance creator the likes of Barisic and Tavernier are as the usual full-back options.”

Indeed, when compared to positional peers in leagues similar to the English Championship, Prings currently ranks in the top 1% for aerial duels per 90 (2.75) and in the top 6% for clearances per 90 (3.24), further evidence that the defensive side of his game is up to scratch.

There is no doubt he could be a useful signing during the current window and it would ease the burden of potentially just having one left-back in the first-team squad come the end of the transfer window.

Pring has demonstrated his talents in the second tier and has shone for City over the previous few seasons. He is certainly ready to take the next step in his career and a move to Scotland could provide him with the chance to win trophies along with playing in European competition.

The next few days of the winter window could see Diomande checking in at Rangers ahead of his proposed move, but hopefully Pring arrives before the deadline next week.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The fact that Fernandes' agent Miguel Pinho met with European clubs last week could mean nothing for the 29-year-old's future. Pinho does, after all, represent several players, and Fabrizio Romano has reiterated that the midfielder wants to stay at United.

However, the new regime at Old Trafford have already established their 'unsellable' players – and Fernandes doesn't feature on the list. So a decent offer could certainly turn heads in Manchester.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Fernandes' importance to United can't be overstated. The 29-year-old scored 15 goals and provided 13 assists in 2023-24, and set up Kobbie Mainoo to score in their FA Cup final over Manchester City.

Whether it's Erik ten Hag or someone else, United's manager next season will certainly want their team to revolve around the Portugal international.

Giovinco talks TST 2024Italian's mindset is to 'win entire thing'Playing with Kwik Goal FC & other starsWHAT HAPPENED?

Recruited to play alongside former MLS MVP Dwayne De Rosario, Giovinco said that the duo – along with ex-USMNT star Jimmy Conrad – aren't just interested in competing at TST 2024, they want to win it all. The Italian's ambitions are high, and speaking exclusively to GOAL, he revealed why and what the 7v7 tournament means to him.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Giovinco, whose extensive career included crafting his trade in Serie A, MLS, the Saudi Pro League and with the Italian national team, has returned to the pitch with proverbial fire in his eyes.

The Italian, who was named 2015 MLS MVP with Toronto FC, was known for his trademark free kicks and neat footwork during his professional career. Although he doesn't know if the former will be as important on a small-sided 7v7 pitch, he's excited to display his brilliance at The Soccer Tournament in Cary, N.C. this week.

WHAT GIOVINCO SAID

The attacker's aim with a deadball was a trademark throughout his career, but with smaller pitches and nets, he's planning to adjust his tactics for TST 2024.

‘Maybe not (scoring freekicks) because I hear the net is not as big as an 11 vs 11," he said, "but if a chance comes we take it. But as a game… soccer is soccer and we will adapt to the movement."

Taking the pitch with another former MLS MVP in Rosario also has him excited, with both having roots with Toronto FC and Canada.

“It will be fun… fun because we represented big teams in MLS and it will be a fun to play together," he said.

Looking ahead to the tournament, which begins Wednesday – with matches streamed LIVE here and on ESPN + and ESPNU – the former Juventus ace declared he only has one intention by competing in 2024. While some clubs — such as Luis Nani and his squad Nani SC — declare that they're at TST to "have fun," Giovinco is here to "win the entire thing."

Leeds now join the race for "brilliant" gem to grant Daniel Farke wish

Since taking over as Leeds manager in the summer following the club's relegation and the departure of Sam Allardyce, Daniel Farke has shown a clear willingness to embrace youth at Elland Road.

The headline success story has been 17-year-old academy graduate Archie Gray, who's started 24 of the team's 28 Championship matches so far. Only Ethan Ampadu (2,790) has played more minutes for the club than Gray (2,436) across all competitions this season.

But the trend extends beyond the teenager – Leeds are, on average, the third-youngest team in the second tier this season at 24.1 years, only behind Sunderland (22.6) and Blackburn (23.7). 21-year-old Georginio Rutter (2,350) and 22-year-old Crysencio Summerville (2,095) both rank inside the Whites' top seven for minutes played too.

While inherently bold, this approach is serving Farke and Leeds well up to this point. After a run of three straight wins, they look like they could achieve automatic promotion rather than having to battle their way up through the playoffs, with the gap to second-place Southampton only four points. No wonder, then, that Farke is ready to take a gamble on another youngster for his squad.

Leeds register interest in Musialowski

According to Football Insider, Leeds are now interested in Mateusz Musialowski at Liverpool. The Whites have been in touch to make clear that they would like to sign the 21-year-old winger, having already carried out some checks.

Daniel Farke.

It's made clear that there are "several" other clubs in the race to sign him this month ahead of the expiry of his deal in the summer, but Leeds have made sure they are "firmly in the race". Signing Musialowski could grant Farke's wish for "attacking reinforcements" prior to the January transfer window deadline.

Leeds can give "brilliant" Musialowski the platform he needs

When Musialowski arrived at Liverpool from SMS Lodz in the summer of 2020, he was heralded as the "Polish Messi", but looking back, that moniker may have placed him under too much pressure at the outset, and he's since struggled to live up to the hype. Three-and-a-half years on, he's still yet to make a senior competitive appearance for Liverpool, nor has he featured in one of Jurgen Klopp's matchday squads.

Instead, he's played 43 games for Liverpool's under-21 side, with 36 of them coming at Premier League 2 level. Musialowski is presently enjoying a fine season, with six goals and two assists in 11 appearances. Only five players have scored more goals in the EFL Trophy than his three, and he's the joint top-scorer at a Premier League academy side. In addition, he was nominated for the PL2 Player of the Month award for October, alongside teammate Lewis Koumas.

Manager Barry Lewtas has applauded his "brilliant" form and his "level of consistency" this season, adding that the attacker is "taking more responsibility for his all-round game" as he reaches a new phase of maturity.

Signing a player who hasn't featured at the first-team level would of course be a gamble for Leeds, but based on how he's done so far this season, it may be one worth taking. It's clear that Musialowski needs to truly launch his career away from Anfield, and Elland Road could be just the place.

Mitchell Starc excited that Australia can get 'a lot better' after scrappy win

Five-wicket haul secures second win in a row but fast bowler thanks Coulter-Nile for saving the team with the bat

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Jun-2019Mitchell Starc said that he believed that the best of Australia’s World Cup cricket is still to come, after making it two wins out of two with a hard-fought 15-run win over West Indies at Trent Bridge.Starc himself delivered the coup de grace, claiming the first five-wicket haul of the tournament to derail West Indies’ pursuit of 289, but deflected the praise for the victory to his team-mate Nathan Coulter-Nile, whose remarkable career-best score of 92 from 60 balls helped rescue the side from 79 for 5.”It’s exciting that we haven’t probably played awesome cricket today,” said Starc. “We’ve probably played some really good cricket in patches, but there’s definitely things we can get a lot better at in all three facets, so that’s exciting for the group.ALSO READ: Mitchell Starc strips away the resistance as Australia revive their fear factor”Finding ways to win and being five for not many and seeing Coults strike them the way he did was fantastic for him and for the group, to get us to a competitive total that we felt pretty confident in defending. Yeah, plenty of positives to take from today.”In sealing the win, Starc became the fastest bowler in ODI history to reach 150 wickets, achieving the mark in his 77th game to surpass the previous record held by Pakistan’s Saqlain Mushtaq. And in nailing his yorkers to unsettle West Indies’ batsmen, it was a timely reprisal of the Player-of-the-Tournament form he showed when Australia won the last World Cup on home soil in 2015.”I’ve been pretty clear and calm in my approach to cricket in the last few months, and hopefully that’s a sign today that even when it’s probably in the balance, I can stay calm,” he said.”Yeah, I guess having that experience of four years ago probably helps play a part, but we’ve got guys that can bowl throughout an innings and bowl at the death, plenty of options for Aaron [Finch] to go to when called upon. It was another positive today for us to be able to defend that total, but obviously we had to get there with Coults first, which was fantastic.””It’s something I enjoy doing, bowling at the death,” he added. “You’re not going to win them all, and there’s going to be times where you go the journey or where you don’t quite get your team over the line. But I think that’s what I enjoy about the challenge of that.Watch on Hotstar (India only) – Mitchell Starc’s five-wicket haul”I guess the yorker, for me, is one [delivery] I’ve probably gone to more often than not in the past. So whilst they’ll know it’s coming, as long as I keep executing it, hopefully it’s going to be better for me than them.”Australia’s next challenge will come at The Oval on Sunday, when they take on another of the tournament’s big guns, India, who are also unbeaten after seeing off South Africa in their opening fixture at Southampton on Wednesday.Starc missed the 3-2 series win in India in March, and claimed not to have watched it on telly while recovering from a pectoral muscle injury. But he said he was looking forward to the challenge of bowling to their aggressive batting line-up.”As a bowling group, for us to continue talking about what we do really well and what we can control. We know they’re a fantastic team. They’ve got depth in their batting, they’re strong throughout.”Virat [Kohli] is obviously one of their key batsmen. Rohit [Sharma] scored a hundred [against South Africa], so we’ll have a chat about them as a bowling group, but at the same time we’ve got to remember what we can control, and that’s our strengths and where we want to bowl to the conditions, as well.”Starc will enter that contest knowing that he has already got the better of one of the most powerful batting line-ups in the competition, even if in the case of Chris Gayle, the delivery with which he finally claimed his wicket ought to have been a free-hit after a previous no-ball went uncalled.”I didn’t until about five minutes ago when someone told me,” said Starc. “I’m normally pretty close [to the front line], and I’ve actually been a fair way back for the last few weeks. I got away with that one, fortunately.”I’ve had some good battles with Chris over the years, and he’s obviously a major weapon for them, and we just saw a little glimpse of it today, how strong he can be when he strikes that ball.”He’s so strong, and I guess he finds the gap hitting over the top, doesn’t he? We knew that going into this contest that they’re going to have a few really big strikers and lots of boundaries, which he’s one of, but we were very fortunate to get him early enough to put them on the back foot again with the new ball.”

Manchester United now eyeing Brighton-esque centre-back signing

Erik ten Hag and Manchester United are planning to revamp the club's defence in the summer, with plenty of turnover possible. After the club elected not to activate their option to extend his contract by a further year, Raphael Varane could leave as a free agent at the end of the season, as could 2023 signing Jonny Evans. Elsewhere, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are up for sale if the Red Devils receive appropriate offers.

United are looking into some high-profile deals for possible successors like Bayern Munich's Matthijs de Ligt, Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite and Nice's Jean-Clair Todibo, but based on a recent report, they could also go after a hidden gem to form part of their long-term vision for their back four.

Man Utd in touch over Brighton-esque signing

According to Boca Juniors news outlet Planeta BJ, Manchester United have made contact over Aaron Anselmino. He's caught the eye of the Premier League club, as well as other top sides in Europe, with his exploits so far.

Boca recently tied Anselmino down to a new contract, one that includes a release clause worth just under £16m, but there's a provision in the deal that raises that sum beyond £20m for the final days of the transfer window. The goal may be to ensure that they don't lose the player so late that they can't replace him.

The Argentine club negotited these fresh terms on the back of losing left-back Valentin Barco to Brighton earlier this month. The Seagulls only had to pay £7.8m for his signature under an outdated clause, and Boca believed that fell well below his market value. Determined to avoid a repeat with Anselmino, they will insist on his new clause being met in full.

Anselmino's breakthrough at Boca

18-year-old Anselmino has made five first-team appearances for Boca so far and they will hope there are many more to come. He earned his full debut in the cup against Racing Club in October and kept his place for the next fixture against Estudiantes before featuring against Newell's Old Boys.

In the league, he played the whole second half of a 1-1 draw with Lanus in November, and then enjoyed a brief substitute outing versus Sarmiento. Having not made the matchday squad at all until that game against Lanus, he would be named on the bench for seven of his side's last eight fixtures overall, which may be a preview of an ascension to a much more significant role next season.

As mentioned above, Brighton have already signed a player from the Buenos Aires outfit this month, and this too would feel very much like a Seagulls-esque deal. In recent years, they've picked up players like Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo from South America and turned them into rising stars coveted by Liverpool and Chelsea.

While United's business model wouldn't revolve around selling Anselmino on for profit, it might be sensible to invest in talented players like him at source and save plenty of money further down the line, even if £20m might seem a little steep at first. Signed in tandem with a couple of the bigger names mentioned above, he could form part of an astute midfield rebuild at Old Trafford.

Man Utd determined to seal January move for Ko Itakura – report

Erik ten Hag and Manchester United reportedly want to overhaul their defence in 2024. There have been "conversations" behind the scenes at Old Trafford about reshaping the Dutchman's backline through a series of departures and some incomings.

United have elected not to trigger their option to extend Raphael Varane's contract by a further year, which could see him leave the club as a free agent in June, and Jonny Evans' one-year deal is also due to expire then after his move from Leicester City last summer.

With Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof up for sale if suitable offers arrive, United could bring in multiple new faces, with the likes of Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), Matthijs de Ligt (Bayern Munich) and Jean-Clair Todibo (Nice) already linked. And now, after a fresh report, another name can be added to that list.

Man Utd could beat Liverpool to Itakura

According to Football Transfers, Man Utd have joined the race to sign Ko Itakura from Borussia Monchengladbach. The Japanese defender, who is appreciated for his "versatility and proficiency in playing out from the back", is emerging as a "prime target" for United in the remainder of this month's transfer window.

While United know that Itakura will be available for £13m from this summer thanks to a release clause in his contract, they want to get the jump on potential rival Premier League suitors Tottenham and Liverpool, who don't intend to move for the player until the off-season. That leaves the "door open" for Ten Hag, and while he's working with a limited budget this month, there may still be scope to bring in the 26-year-old before the deadline.

Itakura has ball-playing edge on Varane

Itakura would be a particularly notable addition for United because he used to be on the books of rivals Manchester City, who signed him from Kawasaki Frontale in his native Japan in 2019. He would never make an official appearance for the club, instead spending time on loan at Groningen in the Netherlands and Schalke in the 2. Bundesliga before settling at Gladbach in a permanent 2022 transfer.

One potential concern for Ten Hag is the player's recent injury record. Itakura has only played eight club games so far this season, having suffered an ankle injury in early October, while he was unavailable for 10 of his side's league matches in the autumn of 2022 after sustaining knee ligament damage. Bundesliga pundit Ronan Murphy has consequently quipped that "Ko" stands for "knocked out"

All confirmed Premier League done deals: January transfer window 2024

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024

But as the report notes, his ball-playing ability when fit remains a major draw, with the defender previously labelled "progressive" prior to his move to Celtic. Itakura ranked third in the Bundesliga last season for pass completion rate (90.8%) and also led the way at Gladbach for successful passes per 90 (64.7). No outfielder had fewer passes blocked (0.32).

He beats Lindelof (90.1%), Varane (88.6%), Evans (86.4%) and Maguire (82.5%) when it comes to pass completion, and so Ten Hag may simply view him as a better fit for his philosophy.

Corinthians abre o placar

Após as primeiras chances do São Caetano, o jogo ficou morno.
