Chelsea are being bled dry by star who earns over 3x more than Palmer

Chelsea’s 2023/24 campaign has been filled with both positivity and negativity, which is expected at the start of a rebuild.

Mauricio Pochettino has often faced backlash for the poor results that have landed the Blues in an 11th-place position in the Premier League.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

However, the FA Cup trophy can still be won, with a tough tie against Leicester City around the corner, but a triumph in that competition would certainly end the season on a high.

That said, one huge positive from this season was the signing of Cole Palmer, but there’s a Chelsea player who’s currently earning over three times more than him, despite barely playing.

Cole Palmer’s salary at Chelsea

Chelsea’s purchase of Palmer this summer from Manchester City for a fee of £40m could very well go down as the signing of the season if he continues to perform at the standard he has so far.

The 21-year-old has been unstoppable this season, taking on the role as the focal point for the Blues, scoring 11 goals and providing eight assists in just 19 Premier League starts.

Gareth Southgate has rewarded Palmer’s excellent performances by handing him a spot in the England squad for the upcoming international break, which just proves how influential he’s been.

However, his current wage doesn’t reflect his impact on the field, with the number ten earning 'just' £75k-per-week, as per Capology, which is far less than a certain somewhat forgotten ace…

ByJack Salveson Holmes Mar 15, 2024 What Reece James earns at Chelsea

There’s no doubt about it, when Reece James is fit and playing, he’s certainly “world class,” as described by football creator George Benson, with his five goals and nine assists in the 2021/22 campaign serving as evidence for that.

However, that’s where the problem lies for the Chelsea defender, as reliability and availability have been a huge issue over the last few seasons.

Reece James

The England defender has dealt with 12 injuries since the start of the 2021/22 season, with a hamstring injury being a common occurrence.

Unfortunately, injuries have also ruined his campaign under the Argentine, and he has missed 29 matches to date. James’ last match for Chelsea was the 2-0 away defeat to Everton at the start of December, having made just seven appearances prior.

Nevertheless, if the 24-year-old can find a solution to his constant setbacks, then he still has a minimum of four years left on his contract, which expires in June 2028.

As you can see, James is also the second-highest earner in the entire Chelsea squad at £250k per week, with only Sterling having a higher salary than the right-back.

This clearly shows that the number 24 earns just over three times more than Palmer does, despite being unable to influence the team on the pitch.

With James’ return to action not entirely known, if he is sadly out for the entire campaign, he would cost Chelsea £2.6m per start this campaign.

Reece James for Chelsea.

Overall, James’ unfortunate luck when it comes to injuries is extremely sad to witness, especially when he has displayed so much potential, and hopefully he can justify his large wage in the near future.

At present, however, it is looking hard for the Blues to justify forking out his exorbitant salary…

Virat Kohli suggests KL Rahul will keep in T20Is too

‘If he can keep that well, and perform well with the bat, then why not?’ Kohli said a day before the first T20I in New Zealand

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Jan-20201:54

Rahul is open to accepting any kind of role – Kohli

India captain Virat Kohli has suggested that KL Rahul will keep in the upcoming T20Is too, as it has given them an option of playing an extra batsman in the XI.Rahul kept wickets in three ODIs against Australia at home – starting after Rishabh Pant suffered a concussion in the first game while batting – even though Pant was fit to play in the third game in Bengaluru, and Kohli said a day before the first T20I in New Zealand in Auckland that Rahul “doing really well with the [keeping] gloves” had “opened up another kind of scenario” for them. With Shikhar Dhawan’s injury, Rahul is also going to get back to opening in the T20Is in New Zealand.”[Dhawan’s injury] will certainly alter a few plans for us… in the one-day game, we’ll have to think of sticking to the same what we did in Rajkot (in the second ODI), that will probably work best for us as a side, have another guy at the top and let KL just express himself at that position where he played really well,” Kohli said. “In T20 cricket, obviously the dynamics change a little bit more, because we do have lower-order batsmen who have done well. We have a few more options there in terms of solidifying that spot and probably let KL bat at the top.”Him doing really well with the gloves has really opened up another kind of scenario for us where it gives us a lot more balance in terms of playing an extra batter. If he can keep that well, and perform well with the bat, then why not? As I said, this is something that we are looking to continue for a while. And nothing taken away from anyone else, it’s just what brings the best balance to the side.”With Pant unavailable for the second ODI against Australia and three openers to accommodate in the XI, Rahul kept wickets and scored a smashing 80 off 52 balls at No. 5 to turn the series around for India. Rahul was asked to open again in the decider with Dhawan’s injury, but with five dismissals behind the stumps in the series and that impressive half-century in Rajkot, Kohli said they were going to “persist” with Rahul keeping and batting in the middle order for some more time.BCCIRahul has been moved around the batting order over the years, but has cemented a position for himself at the top in more recent times, and that has led to more consistent returns with the bat: he averages 47.86 and 45.50 in ODIs and T20Is in the last 12 months respectively, both higher than his career average.”It’s amazing. He is open to accepting any kind of role, whatever the team wants – he is a total team man and you can tell the way he keeps as well,” Kohli said of Rahul’s evolution. “He is always looking for an opportunity and looking to make a play, and he is not nervous about it; the collection of throws and getting to the stumps every ball, and he is just in the game. I think he relishes that much more than just being on the field and it’s showing. He is more involved in the game, he is able to look at the field placements as well, so I think it engages him into the game in the right manner. It’s wonderful to have a guy who can do both things well and bring balance to the team.”Dhawan and Sharma were India’s original openers in limited-overs formats but Dhawan’s succession of injuries and Rahul’s form have put a spanner in the works. For now, India named Sanju Samson as Dhawan’s replacement for the T20Is and Prithvi Shaw for the three ODIs to follow. India also have Mayank Agarwal, who was called up during the 50-over World Cup last year, and Shubman Gill in the ranks, who are currently representing India A in New Zealand.”Continuity [is a problem], yes,” Kohli accepted. “But in the meantime, if you talk about replacements, we have a lot of T20 players around, and people who are very experienced when it comes to playing T20 cricket, having played a lot of matches in the IPL and on ‘A’ tours and other series.”I don’t see an issue of replacement. But yes, an issue of continuity for sure. Look, whenever he (Dhawan) is back in the team – he’s done well in the last game that he played – so we’d love to have him back and have that balance in the team where we can really go in with the best batting line-up that we have. But in the meantime, we don’t have any issues with the replacements.”

Jasprit Bumrah’s trophy cabinet is set to include the BCCI’s Polly Umrigar award, recognising him as the best male cricketer for India in 2018-19. The 26-year-old fast bowler will be felicitated on Sunday in Mumbai alongside Poonam Yadav, who will go home with the title best women’s player of the past season.

Midfielder moved to Italy in 2023Faces fierce competition for placesNew manager has a role for himWHAT HAPPENED?

The 21-year-old midfielder enjoyed a productive debut campaign at San Siro on the back of his 2023 move from Valencia. He made 40 appearances across all competitions, with 30 of those coming in Serie A, but started only 13 games in the Italian top-flight.

Competition for places has led to links with the likes of Lyon, with offers reportedly being readied for the New York native. Musah has, however, been figuring off the bench for Milan during their pre-season tour of the States – with new Rossoneri boss Paulo Fonseca finding a role for him.

WHAT FONSECA SAID

Fonseca has no intention of sanctioning a sale, telling of Musah’s place in his plans: “I’m 200% sure he’s the kind of player for our game. He showed [against Real Madrid] in 30 minutes, it was amazing with just a few days of working with us. I’m very confident with him. I believe he can be very important for our team. But of course, he must improve many things, but my opinion? He has the right characteristics to play in this position in our game.”

Musah and Pulisic were late arrivals to Milan’s pre-season training camp after representing their country at the 2024 Copa America. They are now very much part of the fold again and are looking to figure prominently in Fonseca’s thoughts across the 2024-25 campaign.

Man Utd struck gold with star now worth more than Mount & Martinez combined

Throughout Manchester United's history, success and glory have been built on the foundations of developing the youth.

Showing trust and belief that talent speaks louder than previous experience, if the individual is good enough, then they should play.

From the day of Paul Scholes to Marcus Rashford and even more recently Alejandro Garnacho, allowing the youngsters to shine is part of the Red Devils' DNA.

Although this season has been frustrating and far from brilliant, one aspect that Erik ten Hag should take huge credit for is his influence on the development of superstars, and one of those is most definitely Kobbie Mainoo.

Kobbie Mainoo’s rise to first-team success

After impressing in the youth setup, first-team training, and even scoring against Cadiz in a mid-season friendly, Mainoo made his first competitive start for Man United in January 2023 against Charlton in the EFL Cup.

For the rest of Ten Hag’s first campaign in charge, the academy graduate appeared in the matchday squad on numerous occasions, even making his Premier League debut against Leicester City in February.

Kobbie Mainoo

Fast forward to the end of the season, and the youngster was on the plane for United’s pre-season tour, where Mainoo particularly impressed against Arsenal, assisting Bruno Fernandes’ opener in the 2-0 win.

However, disaster struck as the midfielder suffered an unfortunate injury against Real Madrid, which instantly forced him off the field.

At that point, all the progress made was halted, and it took 87 days for the number 37 to make his return, which he did in sensational fashion.

Man Utd eyeing one of "the biggest CBs in the world" to boost Mainoo

The promising defender is yet to make a competitive start for his current team.

ByTom Lever Apr 10, 2024 Mainoo’s stats and valuation since breaking through

On November 26, 2023, an 18-year-old Mainoo started his first Premier League game of his career, where he showcased his true talent and ability to the world against Everton.

Even after his first ten minutes, it was instantly obvious that this wonderkid wasn’t anything like the typical youth player, showing bravery and confidence while also being called “Man Utd’s best player” by Gary Neville.

Kobe Mainoo

Since then, Mainoo’s rise to stardom has been rapid, becoming a key member in Ten Hag’s side, with his performances impressing enough to earn his first senior England start.

Since the game against the Toffees, the 6-foot star has started 16 Premier League matches and played in all of their last 20 games, which just shows how much he’s valued by the coaching staff.

His recent performances against Liverpool in particular have only highlighted how special he is even more, so it’s no surprise that he’s the fourth-most valuable teenager in the Premier League.

Mainoo’s incredibly fast progress to the top has also seen his estimated worth increase, to the point where he’s now worth even more than Mason Mount and Lisandro Martinez combined (£34m), according to CIES’ Football Observatory.

Football content creator Liam Canning is a huge fan of Mainoo, labelling him “generational” after his goal at the weekend against Jurgen Klopp’s side, but it’s the sheer consistency of his displays that make him one of a kind.

If he continues to perform at the level he’s shown this season, then it’s fair to say that Man United do not only have one of the most promising talents in the Premier League on their hands, but in the world, and his value is only going in one direction.

Wolves could unleash “impressive” academy star to ease Neto’s injury

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been incredible this season, climbing into the top half of the Premier League table with ten games to go.

Gary O'Neil's influence on the squad has seen plenty of development, with their latest 2-1 win over Fulham highlighting that.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil celebrates a Premier League win.

Despite losing their two most productive forwards to injury, Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan, they continue to grind out results, which is extremely impressive.

However, that could change with two injuries occurring last weekend, which saw two key attackers be forced off early.

The latest news on Wolves' injury problems

In the first half of the clash against the Cottagers, Wolves lost Jean-Ricner Bellegarde to injury after just 11 minutes of play, which meant that the already weakened attack worsened.

The versatile French gem suffered a knee injury, and he is waiting to undergo a scan, which will confirm the extent of his setback, but his availability for the weekend's FA Cup clash with Coventry looks unlikely.

Pedro Neto is the other player who went off moments before half-time after pulling up with a hamstring injury, which he had already been dealing with prior to the game.

A quick burst of acceleration caused the injury, and it seems set that the Portuguese maestro will spend a period on the sidelines.

Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Pedro Neto.

Therefore, O’Neil will be forced to look to the youth in his squad to step up in the absence of all of his key attackers, bar Pablo Sarabia.

The academy star who could benefit from Wolves' injuries

Nathan Fraser is a prime example that the boss isn’t afraid to chuck the youth players at the deep end, with the striker playing four times in the Premier League already, even starting against Fulham.

With a lack of options, there will be a spot for another young prospect in Tawanda Chirewa, who has the versatility to cover an attacking role as well as in midfield.

The 20-year-old has already had his first taste of Premier League football this season, as he came on as an 80th-minute substitute against Newcastle United recently.

The number 62 was only on the field for a brief cameo, but he certainly showed his quality and self-belief, completing 100% of his passes, having one shot, and completing one key pass.

However, it’s been in the academy where Chirewa has shown his ability to change the game in the final third, scoring four goals in six matches, and as you can see below, he’s been excellent when playing across a number of roles.

When enduring an injury crisis, it’s vital that the squad has players who are capable of playing in multiple positions, and Chirewa can certainly do that. This is what may potentially give him the nod in the near future, especially when coming off the bench.

Although the “impressive” star – as he was dubbed by journalist Liam Keen – hasn’t been able to truly show his talent yet, the injuries could provide the perfect breakthrough he needs.

Based on the youngster's game against the Magpies, he deserves a chance to shine.

According to , Neil Bath, who brought Terry back to Chelsea to work in the academy last year, left the club, as did Jim Fraser – who worked closely with the ex-England international. Earlier this year, the former centre-back was negotiating an extension to his rolling contract and now the report states that will be finalised soon.
