Liverpool leading Man Utd in race to sign 29 y/o free agent with talks held

Liverpool are now thought to be leading Manchester United in the race to sign a world-renowned 29-year-old, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds may not have completed any signings yet this summer, but that doesn't mean that a vast array of players aren't being linked with moves to Anfield, as Arne Slot looks to strengthen the squad that Jurgen Klopp left him.

Celtic star Matt O'Riley has emerged as a reported target for Liverpool, having shone hugely for the Hoops last season, registering a total of 31 goal contributions (18 goals and 13 assists) in the Scottish Premiership. The Dane has plenty of options, but a move to Merseyside isn't being ruled out.

Celtic'sMattO'Riley

Dani Olmo is a player whose reputation has been enhanced greatly after some superb performances for Spain at Euro 2024, with no player scoring more goals than his tally of three in the tournament. The 26-year-old is believed to be wanted by the Reds this summer, but they are facing competition from the likes of United and Manchester City.

Then there's Adrien Rabiot, who United are also believed to be pushing hard to sign, with a recent claim even suggesting that he is "getting closer" to sealing a move to Old Trafford all the time. Liverpool are seemingly another interested party, holding talks with him, and now a twist has emerged in the saga.

Liverpool lead Man Utd in race to sign 29-year-old

According to a fresh claim from Tutto Juve on Sunday, Liverpool are actually ahead of Manchester United in the battle to sign Rabiot this summer, contrary to the aforementioned reports.

The Reds are described as being "ahead in the negotiation", with the 29-year-old a free agent after leaving Juventus at the end of last season.

Adrien Rabiot for Juventus

Given his age, Rabiot may not be coming in as a long-term option for Liverpool, which may not appeal to Slot, but there is no doubting his credentials as a top-level footballer.

The Frenchman is a six-time Ligue 1 champion, dominating the division in a strong Paris Saint-Germain side in the past, and he has also tasted Serie A glory once in a Juventus shirt. Meanwhile, Reds hero Ibrahima Konate has spoken positively about his international colleague in the past, saying:

"Rabiot?I didn’t know him before this World Cup. I had never lived with him in the group. Talk to everyone. He is a key player in this competition. Adrien takes us a lot, in defence and attack."

With Thiago leaving Liverpool earlier this summer, bringing an end to his playing career in the process, Rabiot could fill the void left by the Spaniard, adding experience and class to a midfield that is relatively young. The likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones, Ryan Gravenberch and Harvey Elliott are all 25 years of age and under.

It is understandable why some would be against the signing of the France international, considering he is 29 and could have high wage demands, but pipping United to any signing should never be sniffed at.

    WHAT EDU SAID

Speaking on the club website, Edu said: "This was an incredibly hard decision to make. Arsenal has given me the opportunity to work with so many amazing people and the chance to be a part of something so special in the club’s history. It has been a special journey and I thank Stan, Josh, Tim and Lord Harris for the support they’ve given me.

"I’ve loved working with so many great colleagues across our men’s, women’s and academy teams, especially Mikel, who has become a great friend. Now it is time to pursue a different challenge. Sesko was on the radar of several high-profile teams in the summer before he decided to extend his contract with RB Leipzig until 2029. However, the move merely delays Sesko's inevitable exit and he'll be among the transfer rumours again at the end of the season.

Arsenal were heavily linked with the 21-year-old but Mikel Arteta decided to persist with his current options in attack, a move that could backfire with the Gunners looking up in the Premier League standings. Manchester United are also said to be interested in Sesko, with Rasmus Hojlund not yet doing enough to prove that he can be their striker of the future.

DID YOU KNOW?

Both clubs will likely be in the mix to sign Sesko again next summer and they have just found out how much the Slovenia international is likely to cost. According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, Sesko has a "gentleman's agreement" in his RB Leipzig deal, in lieu of a release clause, that means they will open negotiations with any interested clubs should they receive an offer of between €70-75 million (£58m-62m).

Man City may lose "crazy" ace after massive £500k-p/w offer to join Ronaldo

Despite coming into the summer transfer window off the back of winning four consecutive Premier League titles, Manchester City could suffer a shock exit to Saudi Arabia this summer.

Man City transfer news

It's shaping up to be a year of uncertainty at The Etihad with Pep Guardiola's contract coming to an end next summer and the verdict of their 115 charges set to finally be revealed in late 2024, according to reports.

Losing Guardiola at such a time would undoubtedly be a major blow for the Cityzens, who could find themselves facing significant punishment if they lose their battle against their 115 charges and in search of a new manager to replace the irreplaceable.

The Spaniard may not be the only one heading for the exit door, however, with Kevin de Bruyne linked with a move to become the latest Premier League star to swap English football for Saudi Arabia. The Belgian, whilst not at the peak of his fitness throughout the last campaign, returned from injury at the perfect time to take City to glory. Yet, he alongside one other City star may not be able to resist the riches offered by Saudi Arabia.

According to Cesar Luis Merlo, Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr have offered Ederson £500k-a-week to complete a move this summer in a package worth a total €60m (£51m) over two years for the player.

The 30-year-old suffered three injuries last season in what is a concerning sign for those at The Etihad ahead of next season. And if those injuries were to persist, then cashing in may yet be the right choice.

Ederson, meanwhile, could accept the chance to play alongside Ronaldo and earn an eye-watering amount in the process, avoiding any potential off-pitch chaos that Manchester City could be about to endure come 2025. As the summer transfer window progresses, the goalkeeper is certainly one to watch.

Replacing "crazy" Ederson is no easy task

Whether it's this summer or when his current contract expires in 2026, replacing Ederson will feel like mission impossible for Manchester City. Since arriving, the shot-stopper has become one of the best that the Premier League has ever seen when the ball is in his possession, with his passing range one that many associate with a midfielder rather than a goalkeeper.

Guardiola's praise, therefore, comes as no surprise. The Spaniard said via Manchester Evening News in 2022: "He is crazy. This guy is crazy, sometimes I think he doesn’t feel or something! He concedes a goal, he is calm, makes a save, he is calm, so stable and as a keeper he is fantastic. Outside, he is completely different.

"At that moment I thought it could be that close and after I see the image, one inch to the goal and doesn’t matter but it is what it is and so good he is so stable doesn’t feel the pressure. The most important thing in football you have to forget the previous action and he forget immediately, he is ready for the next one."

Tough ask for India as Australia set them 328 on a tricky track

Siraj takes five but Australia still have enough time to push for series victory

Karthik Krishnaswamy17-Jan-2021
Rain wiped out nearly all of the last session of day four soon after Australia had set India 328 to win the Gabba Test. India’s openers had only faced 11 balls, and still had a possible 23.1 overs left to negotiate before stumps, when rain sent the players hurrying into their dressing rooms for the second and final time on the day.On a pitch where inconsistent bounce has grown into a frequent menace, Australia should still have enough time left, in theory, to bowl India out and wrap up a 2-1 series win, but the weather forecast for day five isn’t encouraging.India will have been the happier side at stumps – not so much from the standpoint of the match situation as much as the fact that the bowling attack they cobbled together for this Test match, with each of their senior options unavailable, managed to challenge Australia again and keep them from running away with the game. For one, they bowled Australia out. This hadn’t seemed likely when David Warner and Marcus Harris had extended their opening partnership to 89 and left Australia effectively 122 for no loss some 40 minutes into the day’s play. But India regrouped, with Shardul Thakur breaking the partnership on his way to an impressive four-wicket haul and Mohammed Siraj capping off a stellar debut series with a maiden Test-match five-for.Thakur had been wayward through the first innings but showed much better control in the second, changing the mood of the game by replacing an erratic T Natarajan and testing the left-handers with his angle from over the wicket, landing the ball within the line of the stumps and forcing them to play, and drawing a series of plays-and-misses with movement off the deck.A short ball brought the breakthrough, with Harris leaving his gloves in the way of the ball while trying to duck underneath it. Washington Sundar, Thakur’s partner in crime with the bat on day three, then had Warner lbw with one that went with the arm to leave Australia 91 for 2 with two new batsmen at the crease. Those two batsmen, Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith, threatened to take the game away once more with a counterattacking stand full of daring forays down the pitch to Sundar’s offspin. But having raced to 25 off 21, Labuschagne had no answer to Siraj when he got one to straighten in the channel after angling into him, and Rohit Sharma pouched a thick edge at second slip.Three balls later, Matthew Wade was caught down the leg side off Siraj, his duck capping a miserable series that has put his place in doubt.Either side of tea, Smith – batting with adventurous use of feet and hands – and Cameron Green – blocking stolidly with a rather mechanical-looking forward stride – added 73 in 23.2 overs, stretching the lead past the 200 mark.On 42, Smith gave India a chance when he stepped out and miscued a lofted hit off Sundar, but Siraj misjudged the catch at long-on and dropped it while off-balance. But soon after he’d moved past fifty, Siraj made up for the miss by getting a ball to leap at Smith from just short of a length. He made an impressive effort to survive the delivery, but couldn’t pull his bottom hand off the handle before the ball had struck his glove, and lobbed to gully.By the time Thakur sent Green back with an away-seamer in the corridor – it gave Sharma his fifth catch of the match – Australia’s lead had passed 250. Inconsistent bounce was becoming more frequent, with the long, vertical cracks on the pitch now having widened significantly. Natarajan had got one ball to creep through at ankle height and narrowly miss Green’s off stump. Thakur got one to spit up at Tim Paine and hit his glove. Australia may have felt they already had enough for an early declaration, especially given the danger of the erratic bounce injuring one of their bowlers. But they batted on, perhaps wary of having their bowlers – each of whom has played all four Tests, and all of whom have got through grueling workloads in India’s second innings in Sydney and their first innings here – get back on the field too soon. The runs came quickly, either side of a rain interruption that almost entirely coincided with the tea break, even as Siraj and Thakur chipped steadily away at the wickets. The bowlers survived this period largely unscathed, even though Pat Cummins suffered a smack on his right elbow from Siraj and a glancing blow to the back of his helmet from a Thakur bouncer that kept unexpectedly low.Eventually, Cummins made an unbeaten 28 – his highest score in 22 Test innings, a lean run stretching all the way to India’s previous tour of the country in 2018-19 – as the last four wickets added 67 to Australia’s total.

Australia's batting ills continue despite Steven Smith ton

It looked like the performance that could move the talk on from the batting ills Australia suffered in the first two Tests. However, despite three substantial innings in the top four, including a masterly century from Steven Smith, it did not quite work out that way in the third Test against India at the SCG.When Smith – having responded to three single-figure dismissals with his 27th Test hundred, which he celebrated with much gusto – was brilliantly run-out by Ravindra Jadeja, it meant Australia had lost eight wickets for 132 runs; 206 for 2 to a rather underwhelming 338 all out. There is a lot to unfold yet in this game – India did well to reach the close two down on a surface that could play tricks – but they missed a chance to be far more impregnable.”I think it’s a decent total,” Smith said after the second day’s play. “It would have been nice to score a few more – you always want more. It’s a bit up and down, the wicket, we’ve seen a couple of balls have kicked up off a length, a couple shot low.”Related

It was a ten-over period before the second new ball where India were allowed to get their foot in the door. Marnus Labuschagne cut a ball from Jadeja to slip where Ajinkya Rahane took a superb catch to fall in the 90s for the first time in Tests, his dismissal ending the second consecutive 100-run stand of the innings. More culpable was Matthew Wade, when he could not resist trying to take on Jadeja, only lofting the left-arm spinner to mid-on.Wade had made the cut for this Test at the expense of Travis Head, moving down the order to No. 5, having accepted the challenge of opening in the first two Tests as Australia patched up their top order. Before this match, Wade had averaged 35.00 since returning to Test cricket; Head had averaged 30.62 in the same period. This was the second time in three innings that he fell to a misjudged attempt to attack the spinner. In the first innings at the MCG, he had hit R Ashwin to midwicket after having eased his way to 30. Here, his innings was still in its infancy but his intent had been obvious, peppering Hanuma Vihari at short leg as he swept powerfully at Jadeja and producing a brace of strongly driven boundaries to move into double figures. Then he advanced and tried to go over the leg side, but was nowhere near the pitch. It was a shot selection that brought a strong rebuke from Ricky Ponting.Steven Smith’s 131 somewhat made up for Australia’s collapse of 8 for 132•Getty Images

“Matthew Wade needs to have a lot more game awareness,” Ponting said on Channel Seven. “In a situation like that, Matthew Wade has been opening in the last couple of Test matches so the new ball is not going to faze him. But what he’s done by getting out is expose Cameron Green to the new ball, a guy in his third Test, and for me that is just not thinking enough about the situation of the game.”And the new-ball threat certainly came to pass. Green was kept scoreless and then worked over by Jasprit Bumrah, before being pinned lbw with the fifth ball of a classy over. After lunch, Tim Paine was cleaned up by a delivery that zipped back between bat and pad. Hopes of a total over 400 had become trying to reach 300.At this stage, it was basically Smith doing all the scoring. From the moment Wade fell until Pat Cummins was yorked by Jadeja, he made 39 of the 46 runs that came – four of the rest were byes that flew over Cummins from a Bumrah bouncer. On only three previous occasions had Australia’s Nos. 6-8 been dismissed for a combined tally of one or fewer in an innings.Jasprit Bumrah traps Cameron Green lbw•Getty Images

Mitchell Starc then briefly stole the strike before Smith clipped a delivery through the leg side off Navdeep Saini. On completing the third run, at the end of which he nearly slipped in excitement, there was a celebration which also looked like a release of some frustrations. Coupled with the low scores in the first two matches, it was his first Test hundred in Australia since he got one against England in December 2017, although this was only his eighth match since then because of his one-year ban.”I read a lot things… and plenty of people said I was out of form, so it was nice to come back into form, if that’s what you want to call it,” he said. “It was only about three or four weeks I think [since] I scored two hundreds at the SCG [during the ODIs against India]. It kind of just makes me laugh sometimes when people say that kind of thing, I missed out in the first two Test matches.”Such have been Smith’s run-scoring feats that a few low scores will prompt attention almost out of surprise that they have occurred, particularly when two of them came in a defeat; but, in reality, he was always lower down the list of concerns. The fact Australia would have been significantly short without him highlights that.

Club chief confirms "interest" in 26 y/o star as Derby submit first offer

Amid a busy transfer window ahead of their Championship return, Derby County have reportedly submitted their first offer to sign their seventh arrival of the summer for Paul Warne.

Derby transfer news

Derby wasted no time before getting their summer business underway, hoping to avoid Championship relegation at the first time of asking and begin their journey back into the top six following last season's promotion from League One.

Jerry Yates

So far, Warne has welcomed Jerry Yates and Ebou Adams from Swansea and Cardiff City, Kenzo Goudmijn from AZ Alkmaar, Corey Blackett-Taylor from Charlton Athletic, Ben Osborn from Sheffield United and Kayden Jackson from Premier League side Ipswich Town in a solid window. Those at Pride Park will be particularly pleased with the arrival of Adams following an impressive loan spell from Cardiff.

After officially completing a permanent move, Adams told the club's official website: "I can't describe it, to be fair. I'm just over the moon and happy that it's finally done. I think it's a long time coming. Nothing's certain in life, but I was really hoping it would go through and I'm very grateful that it has. And now I can continue smiling again and enjoy myself."

Following Adams, the Rams have now reportedly turned their attention towards the goalkeeping department. According to Sports Bladet, Derby have made their first offer to sign Jacob Widell Zetterstrom from Djurgarden this summer, but have had that first move knocked back.

Derby County submit an offer to sign 21 y/o gem with "magic in his feet"

He has interest from numerous Championship clubs.

ByTom Coates Jul 17, 2024

This one may be far from over, however, after Djurgarden sports director Bosse Andersson confirmed the various "interest", saying via Sports Bladet: "You can tell that the interest in Jacob has increased and there are a couple of clubs that we have been in contact with. If something really good comes up regarding Jacob, we will solve it, but it is not something that is relevant right now. But there is interest in him."

Derby still looking to replace Wildsmith

After losing Joe Wildsmith to West Bromwich Albion on a free deal earlier this summer, Derby are running out of time to find a replacement for the shot-stopper, with Zetterstrom the latest option to emerge. The Swede enjoyed an impressive season at Djurgarden, keeping seven clean sheets in 14 league games, but it remains to be seen whether the Rams will submit a suitable offer to his current club, having reportedly seen their first attempt rejected.

At 26 years old, the goalkeeper should be in the prime of his career, making now a more important time than ever to make his biggest career move yet. Derby's first game back in the Championship takes place at Ewood Park against Blackburn Rovers on August 9 in what they hope will become the perfect way to get their return to the second tier going.

By that stage, the Rams must ensure that they've found their replacement for Wildsmith in the summer transfer market.

Imagine him & Odegaard: Arsenal hold talks to sign £50m Nketiah upgrade

Despite falling short in the Premier League title race once again, losing out to the indomitable Manchester City for the second successive season, Arsenal are calmly making transfer tweaks to their outfit.

The transfer window is in full swing and there's now less than one month remaining to conclude business, but the Gunners have already strengthened their backline with the £42m signing of Riccardo Calafiori and are working toward landing Real Sociedad's Mikel Merino to add some steel to the engine room.

Goalkeeper David Raya has also seen his initial loan stint completed for £27m, and now, Mikel Arteta can turn his attention to the front of the ship.

Stats via Premier League

Arsenal have one of Europe's highest-quality squads and will be among the favourites in the Premier League and Champions League both this year, but are somewhat lacking at centre-forward.

That could now be changing…

Arsenal targeting new striker

Arsenal are selling some fringe players and replacing them with signings of perceived higher quality, thus improving the overall level of Arteta's squad. Eddie Nketiah is the latest to be worked toward the exit, with Marseille failing with a bid as Edu holds firm on his £30m asking price.

The centre-forward is likely to depart, however, for – as per Football Transfers – Brighton & Hove Albion's Joao Pedro is being pursued.

The Brazilian forward, who joined the Seagulls from Watford for roughly a £30m fee one year ago, enjoyed a successful season on the South Coast and has been the subject of recent internal Gunners' discussions.

Brighton striker Joao Pedro

Sources understand that Brighton would be willing to cash in for around £50m, so much depends on Nketiah's future.

Joao Pedro's exploits at Brighton

Nketiah is a reliable goalscorer but he doesn't boast the complete set of qualities that Arteta demands from his team – in other words, he is expendable.

Pedro could prove to be an intelligent signing and a big upgrade on the 25-year-old, having scored 20 goals and added three assists across all competitions for Brighton last season, hailed as an "absolute superstar" by journalist Charlie Haffenden.

As per FBref, Pedro, aged 22, ranks among the top 6% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 7% for fouls drawn and the top 2% for percentage of aerial challenges won (62.0%).

Such metrics denote a strong set of rounded skills, with his ball-carrying ability – he's been described as an "insane dribbler" by analyst Ben Mattinson – leading opponents to commit fouls and his robust physique allowing him to outwork others in the duel.

It's exactly what Arteta's after, with positional fluidity mixed with such athletic qualities and a clinical nature to upgrade on Nketiah, who only has 19 goals from 116 appearances in the Premier League.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

He would improve Arsenal's frontline, but he'd also be something of a dream for Gunners skipper Martin Odegaard, whose playmaking brilliance would suit his progressive nature to a tee.

Imagine Joao Pedro & Martin Odegaard

Odegaard has been the linchpin over the past several seasons, awarded the club's Player of the Season for 2023/24 and posting 26 goals and 18 assists across the two terms.

His influence and intelligence, technique and tenacity and box-crashing genius have seen him rise from a one-time wonderkid label to very much live up to the hype.

Across Europe's top five leagues over the past year, Odegaard ranks among the top 5% of midfielders for goals, the top 4% for assists, the top 1% for shot-creating actions, the top 2% for progressive passes and the top 11% for progressive carries per 90.

The 25-year-old also created 17 big chances in the Premier League last season, and while his complete quality would be a benefit for any player, his range of passing could unlock the finest football of Pedro.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard

Brighton's rising star, having completed 1.4 dribbles per game in the English top flight last year and created nine big chances himself, would offer the creative skill of Gabriel Jesus at Arsenal while bringing the kind of growing goalscoring acumen that Odegaard would relish.

The Norway captain's string-pulling presence from the middle of the park has seen him grow into one of Europe's finest players, and Pedro – still only 22 remember – could be the final piece of the puzzle to send the team's dynamism to another level entirely.

Obviously, much hinges on Nketiah's sale, but Arsenal are quite clearly willing to part ways with a player who has been used sparingly under Arteta's wing especially so over the second half of the 2023/24 campaign.

Indeed, earning just six substitute appearances in the Premier League since February – and being left on the bench for a further ten matches – it would appear to be in the best interests of all parties to cash in swiftly.

Arsenal forward Kai Havertz

Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard have both succeeded at centre-forward over the last year, with the German especially so, but now a more prolific focal point is required.

Having fought tooth and nail to overthrow Man City's imperious reign in England, the Londoners are enjoying an impressive transfer window that might just tip the odds. Third time lucky?
