The international break can either bring a player's form to a complete standstill or hand it another major boost ahead of their return to domestic action. For one Liverpool star, in particular, the latter has certainly been the case.
Liverpool's flying start under Arne Slot
The Reds couldn't have asked for a better start under new boss Arne Slot, who has the near-impossible task of replacing Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. The Dutchman is not attempting to simply replicate the Liverpool legend, however. He arrives his own man with his own techniques. Gone are the fist bumps, replaced instead by the more reserved thumbs up, job done attitude of Slot.
Liverpool "machine" who was sold by Klopp outscored Diaz & Nunez in 23/24
He’s a Premier League icon…
ByAngus Sinclair Sep 10, 2024
More classical than heavy metal thus far, Slot's side have been as stylish as the Premier League gets, winning three from three without conceding once in a run that includes a stunning 3-0 mauling of Manchester United at Old Trafford. Even without Klopp, things quite clearly haven't changed all too much when it comes to the modern history of that rivalry.
Alas, Old Trafford victory aside, what has been most impressive is how Slot has transformed Ryan Gravenberch into the defensive midfielder that he was craving at the heart of his Liverpool side. The Dutchman has stepped up for his club and more recently for his country to win over a harsh critic in Rafael van der Vaart.
Van der Vaart's praise for Gravenberch
As the Netherlands held Germany to an entertaining 2-2 draw courtesy of goals from Denzel Dumfries and Tijjani Reijnders, it was one particular pass from Gravenberch that caught the eye of Van der Vaart. The Liverpool man unleashed a stunning half-volleyed pass into the path of Xavi Simons, who failed to convert to hand his teammate what would have been the ultimate assist.
Earning the praise of Van der Vaart, the former Tottenham Hotspur star said via The European Lad: "That pass by Ryan Gravenberch. I actually wanted to go home after he gave that pass because it ain't going to get any more beautiful than that."
The former Bayern Munich man may have finally discovered his best form after a difficult few seasons, and that could leave Ronald Koeman with no choice but to hand him a permanent place in his Dutch side. Of course, the ex-Everton boss didn't hand Gravenberch a single minute at Euro 2024 in a move that he may now be regretting.
The task for Gravenberch is now to pick up where he left off for Liverpool. As things stand, he's set to save the Reds from spending what could likely be over £50m on a defensive midfield solution by handing Slot the perfect option. With Nottingham Forest up next, Liverpool, Slot and Gravenberch have the chance to make it four from four in the Premier League.

Tasmania have signed the only known male ambidextrous cricketer in the Australian system with 18-year-old allrounder Nivethan Radhakrishnan joining on a rookie contract.Radhakrishnan was born in India and moved to Sydney when he was 10. He is able to bowl both offspin with his dominant right arm and left-arm spin. He has been part of the New South Wales system and represented Australia at Under-16s level. In 2019, he said he had started bowling with his left arm when he was just seven. “There wasn’t anyone in world cricket doing it at that stage,” he told . “We were very dreamy about it.”Radhakrishnan is one of two signings for Tasmania ahead of the 2021-22 season with allrounder Bradley Hope switching from Western Australia.”Brad and Nivvi are both really exciting young cricketers, and we are thrilled that they are coming to join the Tigers program and progress their careers here in Tasmania,” Jeff Vaughan, the head of Tasmania’s male program, said. The Australian game has already seen an ambidextrous bowler at professional level with Jemma Barsby, who now plays for Perth Scorchers and South Australia, able to bowl with both arms. The feat has also been seen on the international stage with Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis switching between right and left-arm spin.Tasmania squad Tom Andrews, Gabe Bell, Jackson Bird, Iain Carlisle, Jake Doran, Nathan Ellis, Jarrod Freeman (rookie), Brad Hope (rookie), Caleb Jewell, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Lawrence Neil-Smith, Mitch Owen (rookie), Tim Paine (CA contract), Nivethan Radhakrishnan (rookie), Sam Rainbird, Peter Siddle, Jordan Silk, Mac Wright, Matthew Wade, Charlie Wakim, Tim Ward, Beau Webster
Nottingham Forest conceded 67 goals in the Premier League last season, the fifth-highest number conceded in the division. Whilst this is one fewer goal than they conceded in the 2022/23 campaign (68), it is still one of the worst defensive records in the league.
This Forest side have made 28 signings in the past two seasons, making it difficult to establish a starting back four (back five including the goalkeeper), which in turn has seen the Tricky Trees struggle defensively over the past few years.
Forest's number one goalkeeper, Matz Sels, made 16 appearances for the club after signing in January last season, keeping one clean sheet, and conceding 27 goals in 1,440 minutes played.
It's safe to say he's not quite as good as this famed stopper on Trentside…
How much Forest signed Brice Samba for
Fan favourite Brice Samba joined Forest back in 2019, signed from SM Caen for €2.10m (£1.7m). Samba had only made 49 appearances for the French side, conceding 66 goals and keeping 15 clean sheets, making a name for himself and earning his move to English shores.
The gloveman went on to make 133 appearances for Forest, keeping 45 clean sheets, conceding 124 goals, and totalling 11,995 minutes played. His best season by the Trent came in 2021/22, making 45 appearances, keeping 16 clean sheets and conceding 39 goals.
Samba made some huge saves for Forest, helping them in their Championship play-offs, even being called the "hero" after saving a penalty in the penalty shootout to beat Sheffield United, and progress to the Championship play-off final.
Brice Samba's form in 2024
Since leaving Forest for only €5.00m (£4m), joining Lens in 2022, Samba has made 84 appearances for the French outfit, keeping 32 clean sheets, conceding 83 goals and totaling 7,590 minutes played.
Where Are They Now
Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.
Samba is now valued at €15.00m (£13m) by Transfermarkt, more than triple the value he was sold for only two years ago. Since then, Forest have signed Matz Sels, Matt Turner, and Odysseas Vlachodimos trying to replace Samba, as well as loan moves for Dean Henderson, Keylor Navas and Wayne Hennessey.
The 30-year-old shot-stopper has been so good that he was nominated for the Yashin Trophy award in 2023, coming off the back of a runner-up campaign in Ligue 1 with RC Lens, making 37 appearances, conceding 28 goals and keeping 15 clean sheets.
Samba was nominated among many of the world's best, including Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois, Barcelona's Marc Andre Ter Stegen, and Manchester City's Ederson.

The metrics show Samba is far outperforming Sels, facing more shots on target per 90, keeping more clean sheets, conceding fewer goals and making more saves per 90, averaging 3.07 saves compared to the Forest 'keeper's 2.17 saves per 90.
Having a 15.9% higher save percentage than Sels shows the difference in their shot-stopping ability, whilst the former Forest star is also averaging more passes attempted per 90, and more throws attempted per 90, but this may come from playing in a ball-dominant side where he gets more touches.
Forest could have saved themself a lot of time and effort, as well as money, when replacing Samba, if they could have held onto him. Indeed, he has quickly proven himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, earning himself a France call-up along the way.

Reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has weighed in with an update on Arsenal's plans for the final few days of this summer window, following their now confirmed deal for midfielder Mikel Merino.
Arsenal announce £32 million Merino signing after weeks of talks
Earlier this week, news that Arsenal fans have been waiting a long time for was finally dropped after weeks of talks.
Fabrizio Romano: £276k-per-week star who Arsenal want could make late move

Indeed, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta finally got his hands on Merino, with Arsenal officially completing a £32 million move for the Spain international midfielder. His arrival at the Emirates Stadium is set to seriously reinforce Arteta's left-side of midfield, as Merino's towering 6 foot 2 presence and reputation for winning duels provides Arsenal with more tenacity.
The former Newcastle United ace will don the number 23 shirt and could even make his Premier League debut this weekend against Brighton, with sporting director Edu Gaspar saying that Merino's physicality and athleticism will be a huge asset.
“We are so happy to have completed the transfer of Mikel Merino," said Edu to Arsenal's official website.

"This has been another great team effort from many people at the club to finalise the transfer of a player who attracted interest from a number of clubs over the summer.
“Mikel was a key target for us this summer, and we identified him as a player who can fit perfectly into our squad and profile to improve us, as we aim to build on our strong performances of last season. With Mikel’s arrival, he brings us an added high quality of experience, physicality and athleticism as we look forward to this season ahead. We welcome Mikel and his family to the club, and look forward to seeing him play in the Arsenal shirt.”
After the 28-year-old put pen to paper on a long-term contract at Arsenal, the general consensus is that Arteta and Edu may not be done there, as we fast approach summer transfer deadline day.
Arsenal have been linked with a late move for Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman, among others, as they consider upgrading their attacking options ahead of a long and challenging title race with Man City.
Arsenal looking at "last-minute" chance to sign new forward
This has now been backed up by respected transfer reporter Romano, who says that Arsenal are indeed looking at a "last-minute opportunity" to sign a new forward before the window closes.
“I think it’s not going to be a super big name. I don’t expect Arsenal to go for a central striker," said the journalist on Men in Blazers (via TBR).
"There was some fear around the injury of Gabriel Jesus, but I’m told it’s quite positive. The idea of Arsenal is to sign a winger rather than a number nine, looking at a last-minute opportunity on the market."
Lancastrians Arron Lilley and Callum Parkinson dealt North Group leaders Yorkshire Vikings a blow as Leicestershire Foxes won by 34 runs to chalk up a third successive Vitality Blast victory.Lilley just missed out on a maiden T20 hundred, but as the Foxes piled up 207 for 3, his 99 not out off 55 balls with four sixes was comfortably a career-best, while Parkinson took 4 for 35 with his left-arm spin.Lilley shared a stand of 90 for the third wicket with Foxes skipper Colin Ackermann (40) on a poor night for the Vikings with the ball and in the field.Chasing 208 to win, Gary Ballance and Harry Brook threatened briefly but after both fell in the 30s no other batter could pick up the pace and the Vikings were bowled out for 173 as Ben Mike took two wickets in the final over.Opting to bat, the Foxes lost Josh Inglis in making 63 for 1 in the Powerplay, the Australian out to a tame return catch off a Joe Root full toss. Soon after reaching halfway at 98 for 1, Leicestershire saw Scott Steel run out for 32 after a mix-up with Lilley, and Ackermann dropped without scoring in the same over, albeit a difficult chance in the air to bowler Dom Bess. Ackermann cashed in, hoisting Jordan Thompson over deep midwicket for six.Related

After a Fisher slower ball bowled Ackermann, Lilley was unlucky not to become the eighth Foxes centurion in T20, twice seeing lofted shots drop just short of the rope in the final over. Two wickets in three balls from Parkinson checked the Vikings’ early progress as Jonny Tattersall hit straight to point and Adam Lyth was leg before sweeping but 58 for 2 in the Powerplay looked competitive.Ballance was quickly striking the ball well but Parkinson struck another blow as Root hit a wide delivery to point to fall on 15 and after the Vikings reached halfway needing another 123 to win, Ballance chopped on to Steel’s off-spin for 34.George Hill holed out to deep midwicket and Thompson was bowled by Parkinson for a duck to leave 86 required from the last five overs, the Vikings’ hopes effectively disappearing as Brook swung but was caught and bowled by Gavin Griffiths.

She takes 3 for 21 to fashion WI Women’s first T20I victory after seven (completed) matches
ESPNcricinfo staff01-Jul-2021 Nida Dar took 2 for 15, and during the process became the first Pakistan cricketer (male or female) to 100 T20I wickets, but Shamilia Connell’s 3 for 21 proved more decisive as West Indies Women clinched the T20I series opener on Wednesday.Connell bowled three of Pakistan Women’s top four within three overs to set up the hosts’ successful defence of 136 in North Sound. Hayley Matthews and Aaliyah Alleyne made further inroads to reduce Pakistan to 57 for 6 in the 13th over. Ayesha Naseem and Fatima Sana produced a late assault, adding an unbroken 69 for the seventh wicket at a run rate over nine, but it was not enough for the tourists to topple West Indies. Naseem hit 45 off 33 balls while Sana made 24 off 21 balls.Mathews had also contributed with the bat, scoring 32 in a 65-run opening partnership with Deandra Dottin. Although both Dottin and captain Stafanie Taylor fell to Dar, cameos from the returning Knight sisters and Chedean Nation hauled West Indies closer to 140. Sana, too, picked up two wickets and later struck three fours, but her all-round effort ended in vain for Pakistan.Connell won the Player-of-the-Match award for his second successive three-wicket haul.”It feels great,” she told the CWI media. “Coming off the last game I played in England I was Man of the Match also, so being able to start back my international series with a man of the match is a great feeling as well. My game plan was to just go out there and execute my areas hard and just try to contain as much as possible.”Notably, this was West Indies Women’s first T20I victory after seven completed matches and first at home since the 2018 T20 World Cup. It also meant that Courtney Walsh won his first T20I in charge of the side.
