95 touches, 100% dribbles: Liverpool’s 8/10 star was as unplayable as Diaz

European hangover? No chance. Liverpool blistered through Bournemouth’s backline in a resounding first half of football to move to the top of the Premier League after five matches – for today, at least.

Title favourites Manchester City and Arsenal face off in a crunch clash tomorrow afternoon but Liverpool have applied the pressure and rectified last weekend’s shock Anfield defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez-1

Arne Slot has a blemish on his Reds record but it’s an early account that highlights the promise – such promise – of his smooth-running tactical approach, with AC Milan also beaten in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Fans will be delighted with Darwin Nunez’s curled strike from the edge of the box to seal the victory before the break, but it was Luis Diaz who stole the show with an emphatic quickfire double.

Luis Diaz is reborn under Slot's management

Diaz was an ever-present member of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool team last year but he only scored 13 goals across all competitions – with just eight from 37 appearances in the Premier League.

This term, the Colombian winger has bagged five from five in the top flight, also claiming an assist, underscoring his prolific resurgence under Slot’s wing. The Athletic’s James Pearce hailed the “classy” performance, with a stream of goals now added to an electric skillset.

He could have had four on another day. It’s a bit of a hackneyed expression but one that carries a ring of truth. Diaz has gone from strength to strength in the summer and has arguably been Slot’s best player so far.

Liverpool's Luis Diaz

Of course, there are a few others who would stake a claim, Ryan Gravenberch chief among them.

Ryan Gravenberch's performance vs Bournemouth

When Liverpool finished the 2023/24 campaign, few probably imagined that Gravenberch would bloom into one of soon-to-arrive head coach Slot’s standout stars – and at number six too.

Ryan Gravenberch for Liverpool

He’s played every single minute of Liverpool’s campaign thus far, both in the Premier League and on the continent, performing with such class and gusto that the summer’s frustrations around failed attempts to sign a deep-sitting midfielder have been forgotten.

Writing in his post-match player ratings, the Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle handed him an 8/10 score, writing: ‘Another impressive showing where his ability to maintain possession under pressure was to the fore. Composure helped Liverpool see game out.’

The Netherlands international – who notably racked up 95 touches and completed 100% of his dribbles – is a crisp and elegant passer with an ever-improving defensive game and an innate urge to push forward, seeking to influence play with creative distribution and line-stretching movements.

He won seven duels. To contextualise this, Gravenberch won only 2.8 duels per game in the Premier League last season.

The 22-year-old has so much potential and is starting to show that he can dominate from the hub of Liverpool’s engine room. He was just as good as the flashy Diaz this afternoon.

West Ham have relieved Lopetegui of his duties following a pair of heavy Premier League defeats against Manchester City and Liverpool, in which they conceded nine goals while only scoring one in reply. The Hammers have had a disastrous start to the 2024-25 campaign despite spending nearly £130 million ($162.5m) on transfers in the summer. They have won just six matches out of 20 and find themselves seven points above the relegation zone.

According to ,West Ham have already found Lopetegui's replacement as they are all set to appoint former Brighton and Chelsea boss Graham Potter as their new head coach. Potter's last assignment at Chelsea lasted just seven months and he has not managed a club since leaving the Blues in April 2023.

WHAT WEST HAM SAID

A club statement read: "West Ham United can confirm that Head Coach Julen Lopetegui has today left the Club. The first half of the 2024/25 season has not aligned with the Club’s ambitions and the Club has therefore taken action in line with its objectives.

"The Board would like to thank Julen and his staff for their hard work during their time with the Hammers and wish them every success for the future. The process of appointing a replacement is underway. The Club will be making no further comment at this time."

Lopetegui, who arrived at the London Stadium with a big reputation having previously managed Spain and Real Madrid, won just seven of his 22 games in charge at West Ham, drawing five and losing the other 10. That makes for a win percentage of 31.82 – the second worst in his managerial career.

Hungry Shamim shows he is a quick learner

Two nights after failing to close out a chase, the teenager delivers under pressure

Mohammad Isam25-Jul-2021Shamim Hossain, in his second T20I, is under pressure. Three fruitless slogs in the 18th over later, Bangladesh need 25 off 15 balls. The game has wildly swung both ways until this point. Dion Myers had conceded just three off his first three balls; Sikandar Raza’s move to bowl him seemed a gamble that could pay off.Shamim is possibly thinking of his dismissal in the second T20I after he gave Bangladesh hope through his 13-ball 29. Here he was again, in a situation that was even more tricky. There was a series to be won. He simply had to strike. And strike he did. He thumped Myers for three fours: a forehand smash through covers, a reverse bunt past a diving short third man and a fierce pull over midwicket. Then, he kept his head through Blessing Muzarabani’s penultimate over to all but seal the contest. He then finished the game off by hitting the winning runs. He remained unbeaten on 31 off just 15 balls, hitting six fours, five of which came in the last three overs.”I was hungry to finish the game after being unable to do so in the previous game,” Shamim said. “I was looking for that opportunity. I am feeling really well having done that. I am happy that we won the T20I series, which happened to be my first international series. When Soumya (Sarkar) bhai and (Mahmudullah) Riyad were batting together, things were in our favour. While sitting in the dressing room, I told myself that we must win this game.”The match had already started to turn in Bangladesh’s favour during the third-wicket stand between Mahmudullah and Soumya Sarkar, but it needed a final push from the Mahmudullah-Hossain partnership, after Afif Hossain’s dismissal.”Riyad told me that we can get ten an over if we can hit a six or a four every over,” he said. “It will get us close to their target. I maintained my process during this situation.”Soumya Sarkar, whose 68 set up Bangladesh’s push towards the big chase, was impressed with Shamim’s desire. “He played an important innings,” the senior batter said. “He was very positive. I really liked how hungry he was to win the game. This was only his second international match, but finished the game very well.”Shamim made a mark during Bangladesh’s victorious Under-19 World Cup campaign last year. The senior team’s selectors and team management had a better look during this season’s Dhaka Premier League T20s. But despite doing well at these levels, Shamim said that his short crash course of international cricket during these T20Is told him what is needed at this level.”I have figured out how tough international cricket is, playing here,” he said. “I have so far played Under-19 cricket and the Dhaka Premier League, but this is different. One gets fewer bad balls. One has to hit the good balls for boundaries, but at the same time, keep sticking to your process. One has to play with more responsibility at this level.”An altogether different challenge awaits Shamim when Bangladesh take on Australia in the five T20Is from August 3 in Dhaka. The hunger can easily be replaced by a sense of accomplishment, and that’s one very critical area that Shamim needs to guard himself against.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

After a promising 2-2 draw at Liverpool in the Premier League and a penalty shootout win away to Arsenal in the FA Cup, United head coach Amorim wants his team to maintain their high standards when they host bottom-of-the-table Southampton on Thursday. He admitted maintaining a consistently high level is a constant "worry" of his and that the Red Devils need to handle being favourites against the Saints.

    WHAT RUBEN AMORIM SAID

He told reporters: "Yeah, I’m always concerned because we didn’t have during these games the consistency in performance in result, so always worried, it’s my job to be worried but we have to face Southampton in the same way we faced Liverpool and Arsenal, that is the goal. Not more, not less, face that game. Understand there are difficult games and people expect us to win. That changes things, when you have the pressure to win that is the pressure we want. Sometimes it’s hard. Against Arsenal and Liverpool, nobody was expecting us to beat those teams but now we have to be prepared for that pressure, we need that pressure as a team and face the game the right way."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite their positive recent results, United are 14th in the Premier League and Amorim has won just four of his 13 games in charge so far. So a victory against the league's basement side is badly needed.

However, he lost his discipline from the following delivery to edge behind to Ned Eckersley presenting Coughlin with his fourth wicket of the innings.Rushworth then clean bowled Lukas Carey for a duck to allow the hosts to close in on victory. Aston Villa player out on loan stars on debut after Unai Emery rejection

A player who Aston Villa decided to loan out during the summer transfer window has recently impressed on his debut for his new club.

For the Midlands side, it has been a strong start to the Premier League campaign, as they have won three of their opening four games and sit in joint-fourth with Liverpool.

The Villans were very busy during the summer, as they brought in eight new players, and they also let 16 players leave the football club in different capacities. Unai Emery will be hoping that business works out well and helps the club have another strong season.

The transfer window doesn’t open again for a few months, but it appears as though Villa could be in line for a busy January. This is because Aston Villa are being linked with a move for Stoke City’s Souleymane Sidibe. Villa are said to be in a race with Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea to sign the 17-year-old, who has been impressing for the Potters.

Meanwhile, the Premier League side could have a fight on their hands to keep one of their rising talents. Inter Milan are said to be looking into a deal for Jacob Ramsey, as they believe they can sign him on the cheap as a replacement for Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Inter believe they can sign Ramsey for £30 million and then down the line sell him for around £60 million.

Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey

So, while Villa potentially have a busy January transfer window or 2025 summer transfer window ahead of them, they will be keeping their focus on this campaign, and one of their recent purchases, who isn’t at the club, is already performing while out on loan.

Aston Villa player out on loan stars on debut

Aston Villa signed Samuel Iling-Junior from Juventus during the summer, but it was decided that the 20-year-old would spend this campaign on loan at Bologna. Iling-Junior made his debut for the Serie A side this weekend, and he is said to have really impressed.

The winger came on for the final 27 minutes of the match against Como and scored a late equaliser as Bologna recused a point. Il Resto del Carlino, relayed by Sport Witness, labelled Iling-Junior’s performance as “fresh and decisive,” and he has now “turned the tables” after an uncertain summer at Villa.

Juventus forwardSamuel Iling-Junior.

This report goes on to add that Emery had “rejected” Iling-Junior, and it also goes on to criticise their management of the winger. The situation has been described as being “surreal,” but Iling-Junior has managed to stand above the situation and impressed on his debut for Bologna.

Iling-Junior joined Villa in the summer after playing 45 times for Juventus, during which he scored two goals and recorded four assists. Before making his Bologna debut, the 20-year-old had played 36 times in Serie A, scoring two goals and chipping in with three assists. The attacker will be keen to use this opportunity with Bologna as a chance to show his parent club that he has what it takes to be a part of their first team plans going forward.

£25m Chelsea player really impressing Maresca and Cobham staff in training

Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was even forced to deny a penalty from Evanilson, coming after the shot-stopper was booked for fouling him inside the penalty area, with the former making a fantastic diving save to his left as the score remained level.

It was a tough evening for Chelsea, who were made to be resolute on an afternoon where the south coast side really threatened to inflict misery on Maresca. The weakened Blues, who were minus a natural right-back with Malo Gusto and Reece James injured, answered question after question – and were ultimately rewarded for their efforts just minutes from added time.

Christopher Nkunku wriggled into the area, feeding off a pass from summer signing Jadon Sancho, before excellently finding his way through a host of Bournemouth bodies to fire an acute finish into the bottom corner past Mark Travers.

While Pedro Neto was criticised for his Bournemouth performance on the south coast, fellow new arrival Sancho helped to spare Maresca’s blushes with his assist for Nkunku – securing Chelsea their second Premier League win of the season.

Chelsea now prepare to take on West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday, with midfielder Romeo Lavia returning to training alongside the likes of Gusto after his recovery from a hamstring injury.

Jadon Sancho impressing Maresca in Chelsea training

At Cobham, it appears Sancho is making quite an impression on Maresca and his coaching staff, with supporters potentially shown a glimpse of what is to come through his Bournemouth assist.

According to GiveMeSport, it is believed Sancho has impressed Maresca in Chelsea training, mainly due to his effort in showing up early, displaying a faultless attitude and even making the effort to introduce himself to Cobham staff.

This will go a long way in the eyes of club chiefs and fans, who are eager to see the winger become a success following his loan move from Man United, which will be made permanent for around £25 million next summer.

The England international was left in the wilderness by Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, but Maresca may now grant him a new lease of life down south.

“I think we start second half much better and Jadon helped us a lot,” said Maresca on Sancho’s Chelsea debut against Bouremouth. “What he did tonight is exactly what we expected from him,” Maresca said. “As I said, I know Jadon very good because I watched him many, many times in the past and I know what he can give us.”
