Kieron Pollard will play county cricket for the first time in more than a decade this summer after signing for Surrey for the Vitality Blast, where he will link up with his close friend and compatriot Sunil Narine.ESPNcricinfo revealed last month that Pollard had been approached by multiple counties after his international retirement to discuss the possibility of him playing in the Blast and that Surrey were front-runners after Sean Abbott’s involvement on Australia’s tour to Sri Lanka forced him to pull out of his deal.Surrey confirmed the signing on Friday and Pollard is expected to make his debut in their second home game of the T20 season against Gloucestershire at the Kia Oval on May 31. It will be his first appearance in county cricket since 2011, when his Somerset side were beaten by Leicestershire in the final; he was due to play for Northamptonshire in 2020 but his deal was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.Related

Pollard retires from international cricket

“It has been quite some time since I’ve played county cricket and I’m thrilled to be returning to the Vitality Blast competition in Surrey colours this year,” Pollard said in a Surrey press release. “The Kia Oval is a special place to play, especially in front of a full house.”Surrey have not won the Blast since its inaugural season in 2003 and failed to qualify for the knockout stages last year but are among the favourites for the title this season. They are likely to be without several England players – including Sam and Tom Curran, Ollie Pope, Ben Foakes, Jason Roy and Reece Topley – at various stages due to the Test and ODI series against New Zealand and the Netherlands respectively, but securing Pollard and Narine for the majority of the season represents a significant boost to their hopes.Pollard and Narine have only played a handful of games together on English soil, most recently a one-off T20I at Chester-le-Street in 2017, but will resume their hugely successful partnership at the Kia Oval. They have previously played together for West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago, Dhaka Dynamites in the BPL and Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL.Pollard spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons at Somerset•Getty Images

“We’re very pleased to bring Kieron to the club,” Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of cricket, said. “He brings an incredible range of skills as well as experience at the very highest level of the sport. His all-round ability will make a significant difference to the depth of the squad.””This Surrey side is full of talent and should certainly be mounting a challenge for the title,” Pollard added. “I hope that my experience will add a vital ingredient to the club’s success this year.”Pollard has had a quiet season for Mumbai Indians in the ongoing IPL season, with 144 runs across 11 innings at a strike rate of just 107.46. He announced his decision to retire from international cricket and give up the West Indies white-ball captaincy midway through the tournament and has struggled with the demands of stringent Covid protocols in India, writing on Instagram last week: “bubble life isn’t easy”.Despite his lean run, Pollard remains one of the world’s most sought-after T20 players as a highly-experienced finisher, occasional bowler and leader. He will also offer support to Chris Jordan, Surrey’s new T20 captain, with whom he has played at Adelaide Strikers, Peshawar Zalmi and Trinbago. The move means Pollard will spend the majority of the English summer living in London. At last month’s Hundred draft, Pollard was the top pick for London Spirit and is expected to be available for the majority of the season before flying back to the Caribbean late in the group stages to play in the CPL.

Spurs targeting "future legend" who could become better than VDV & Romero

Tottenham Hotspur’s defensive injury crisis has been well documented in recent months, undoubtedly contributing massively to the recent slump in form under Ange Postecoglou.

Saturday’s clash with Newcastle United saw Archie Gray feature in an unnatural centre-back role once more, with Djed Spence also having to do the same on the left-hand side of the backline.

Brandon Austin was brought in between the sticks for his first-ever Premier League appearance, as a result of Fraser Forster’s illness, which kept him out of the meeting with his former side.

Tottenham Hotspur managerAngePostecogloubefore the match

Guglielmo Vicario, Ben Davies, Destiny Udogie, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have all sustained various setbacks in recent times, with the aforementioned players the main crop of defensive talent currently in the Aussie’s first team.

Such absences have seen Spurs plummet down the table, with the supporters desperately hoping for the return of the stars as soon as possible to help save their campaign, which is rapidly declining week after week.

However, with the January transfer window now open, Ange has an opportunity to add depth to his defensive unit, leading to one name already being linked with a move to North London.

Spurs in the race to land defensive wonderkid

According to CaughtOffside, Spurs have entered the race to sign Lens star Abdukodir Khusanov this window, but face stiff competition from various other top-flight outfits.

Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers have already enquired about a move for the 20-year-old, with Newcastle United also on the list of potential destinations for the youngster.

The report mentions that Khusanov could be available for a fee in the region of €20m (£16.6m) a potential bargain given his recent form for the French side in Ligue 1 throughout 2024/25.

He’s started 11 times in the league, with Lens currently occupying seventh place and looking to secure a third consecutive season of European football, with the Uzbekistan international playing a crucial role in their ambitions.

Given the interest from elsewhere, the Spurs hierarchy will have a huge battle on their hands to secure the services of the young star, but he would be an impressive addition – one that could push two current stars for their first-team spots in the coming months.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Why Khusanov could become better than Van de Ven & Romero

Over the last 12 months, Van de Ven and Romero have often been Postecoglou’s main centre-back partnership, handing the pair the responsibility of leading the club up the Premier League table.

However, the recent injury issues have highlighted the need for added depth in the backline, which could prevent the likes of Gray from featuring in such a role down the line.

All supporters will be desperate for the return of the aforementioned players, but one of them may struggle to regain their regular starting role should any deal be completed for Khusanov in the next few weeks.

The 20-year-old, who’s been dubbed as a “future legend” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has produced various stats in the current campaign that are better than Van de Ven and Romero could muster, highlighting what a quality addition he would be.

The Lens ace has made more blocks per 90 minutes whilst also making more interceptions per 90, showcasing his defensive qualities that could improve a Spurs backline that has shipped 21 goals in all competitions since the start of December.

Khusanov has also won more aerials along with more clearances per 90, providing Ange with the star quality his side has desperately lacked recently as a result of the injury crisis in North London.

Such figures could see the Aussie replace either of the regular starters after January should they strike a deal with the French outfit before the end of the transfer window.

The club’s lack of depth has been desperately highlighted, with Khusanov undoubtedly a stellar talent who could provide the depth and quality to help transform their fortunes during the second half of the season.

Farke’s new Godfrey: Leeds in talks to sign a "Rolls Royce" defender

The January transfer window officially opened for business last week and Leeds United have the chance to make moves to bolster their promotion hunt.

Daniel Farke’s side are currently top of the Championship table, one point ahead of Sheffield United and Burnley, and the manager may want to dip into the market to add more quality to his group, to give them the best chance of getting to the Premier League.

The Whites are fighting to finish in the top two to go straight up to the top-flight, rather than having to go through the play-offs as they did last season.

Leeds may look to the defensive side of their team to improve in the January transfer window after they watched their team drop a two-goal lead to draw against Hull on Saturday.

Farke’s men were 3-1 up heading into the final ten minutes and Illan Meslier did not cover himself in glory for any of the three goals, particularly with the second goal after seemingly keeping the ball in play after it was heading over.

Leeds are now, reportedly, looking to bolster their squad by adding another central defender to come in and compete with the likes of Pascal Struijk and Joe Rodon.

Leeds United eyeing deal for Premier League defender

According to The Sun, Leeds United are one of the clubs pushing to sign Nottingham Forest centre-back Andrew Omobamidele in the January transfer window.

The report claims that the Tricky Trees have made him available for a transfer and are looking to rake in a fee of £10m for the player they paid £11m to sign from Norwich City in the summer of 2023, with the Whites now in talks to get a deal done.

It states that Sheffield United, who recently lost central defender Harry Souttar to a long-term injury, are also eyeing up a swoop to land the Ireland international, which means that Leeds are facing strong competition from one of their promotion rivals to secure his signature.

The Sun adds that Nottingham Forest would be open to doing a loan that leads into a guaranteed permanent deal in the summer, although it is unclear if they would allow the guaranteed aspect of the move to only be activated upon promotion.

It reveals that Leeds view Omobamidele as a long-term investment that they could make and that they want to bring in more competition for their current centre-backs, as Rodon is currently the only senior, natural, centre-back option on the right side of the pairing.

Farke had a robust, athletic, young, right-footed Norwich academy graduate in his defence when he won the Championship title with the Canaries in the 2018/19 campaign, as Ben Godfrey lined up at the back for him that year.

Ben Godfrey's form under Daniel Farke

The England international, who is set to sign for Norwich’s rivals Ipswich Town this month, featured in 31 of the club’s 46 matches in that title-winning season in 2018/19.

He emerged as the first-choice on the right side of the defence during that campaign, playing alongside captain Christoph Zimmermann, and kept experienced options like Grant Hanley and Timm Klose out of the XI.

Former Norwich defender Ben Godfrey.

Godfrey suited the way Farke sees the game because he was progressive in his use of the ball. The defender ranked within the top 13% of his positional peers in the division for progressive carries (1.17) per 90, and the top 21% for progressive passes (3.35) per 90.

This shows that he was comfortable at bringing the ball out from the back to set up attacks for the team, both with passes to break lines and carries to get the team up the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, the Norwich star was reliable with the ball at his feet and dominant in physical contests with opposition forwards on the ground.

Godfrey, who was once described as a “Rolls Royce” by podcaster Ben Winst, then played a season in the Premier League with the Canaries, but was unable to help them avoid relegation.

After that relegation, Everton swooped in to sign him from Norwich for a reported fee of £30m, which shows that Farke helped to turn him into an incredibly valuable asset.

Why Andrew Omobamidele could be Farke's next Ben Godfrey

Interestingly, Omobamidele was already on his way to becoming the German head coach’s next version of Godfrey before his dismissal in 2021.

Farke was sacked by sporting director Stuart Webber in November 2021, just a matter of months after he had given the Irish defender his first-team bow at the back end of the previous season.

Omobamidele, whose former coach Kenny Molloy described him as a “Rolls Royce”, featured in the last nine games of the 2020/21 campaign, after injuries to Zimmermann and Ben Gibson forced the manager’s hand, to help secure a league title for the Yellows.

As you can see in the table above, his performances in a pressured environment, fighting for the title, at the age of 18 were incredibly impressive, as he dominated opposition forwards in the air and on the deck.

Omobamidele then played five times in the Premier League the following season and four of those outings came before Farke was dismissed in November, as replacement Dean Smith opted for more experience.

The Ireland international has found football hard to come by in recent years, with just 11 league outings for Forest since his move from Norwich in 2023, but he could kickstart his career by coming back to the manager who placed faith in him at such a young age.

Farke did not get the chance to see through his development of Omobamidele, in the way that he was able to with Godfrey, and could look to help him fulfill his potential at Elland Road, and turn him into a £30m-rated – or higher – asset in the future.

Arteta must axe Arsenal dud who Thierry Henry would "love" to play with

There is no escaping it now: this season has been a disappointing one for Arsenal so far.

After two campaigns of fighting at the top of the Premier League table, the Gunners have looked miles off the pace this year and, as things stand, sit six points off league leaders Liverpool, who also have a game in hand.

Now, Mikel Arteta’s side have certainly been unlucky in the injury department and been on the wrong end of a few overzealous refereeing decisions. Still, much of the team’s problems stem from their own performances.

Several stars have seen their form seriously drop off so far this season, including one big-money signing with whom Thierry Henry claimed he would have loved playing.

Arsenal's poor performers

So, before we get to the player in question, it’s worth examining some of the other disappointments this season, starting with Gabriel Martinelli.

Now, the sad thing about the Brazilian winger is that following an underwhelming campaign last year in which he produced just 13 goal involvements, his poor performances this season have not come as a massive surprise.

The former Ituano gem has just four goals and two assists to his name in 22 games so far and looks a shadow of the player who was almost unstoppable in 22/23.

It feels like the 23-year-old has almost entirely lost the ability to take an opponent on, and on the rare occasions in which he has beaten a defender this season, he’s often either missed with his shot or made the wrong pass.

Unfortunately for Arteta, the player he favoured over the Guarulhos-born gem towards the end of last season, Leandro Trossard, has also gone somewhat off the boil this year.

The Belgian ace has also racked up just four goals and two assists in 22 games, a far cry from the sensational haul of 17 goals and two assists he managed last season.

Moreover, when he has found himself in dangerous positions this season, the former Brighton & Hove Albion ace has also made poor decisions or been somewhat greedy, to the team’s detriment.

Overall, both wingers are causing the manager problems this season, although they are still giving him something more than one of their big-money teammates once lauded by Henry.

The Arsenal star Arteta must axe

So, to get straight to the point, the Arsenal player in question is none other than Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian striker joined the club for around £45m in the summer of 2022 and made a significant impact on the team in his first year, scoring 11 goals and providing seven assists in 33 appearances.

However, the former Manchester City ace underwent knee surgery midway through the campaign, and while he was still effective afterwards, some of his sharpness and agility had clearly disappeared.

Still, at the start of the following season, Arsenal and Premier League legend Thierry Henry was full of praise for the 27-year-old, telling CBS Sports “I would have loved to play with him” and that “what he offers and what he does for the team is second to none.”

However, as the season progressed, the French icon’s appraisal of the striker appeared more and more disconnected from reality.

While he ended the campaign with a reasonable haul of eight goals and eight assists in 36 games, he had lost his place to Kai Havertz.

Unfortunately, instead of putting up a fight to take it back this season, the Sao Paulo-born dynamo has regressed even further, and after 20 mostly substitute appearances, he has a single goal and two assists to his name.

Moreover, the 5 foot 9 marksman simply looks like a shadow of his former self, with his recent performances against Fulham, AS Monaco and Everton, particularly woeful.

Now, if he was simply a squad player, then this might not be such a big deal, but on top of his hefty transfer fee, he’s also earning a whopping £265k-per-week, which makes him the second-highest-paid player in the squad, and he is not even close to justifying that at the moment.

Ultimately, while Jesus is an incredibly talented player, his form over the last year and a bit has been genuinely poor, and with no signs of improvement in the previous few games, Arteta and Co should be looking to sell him as soon as possible.

Farke could drop Aaronson by unleashing "dynamite" Leeds star in new role

Leeds United were left disappointed coming from Lancashire on Saturday after they could only scramble to secure a draw away at Preston North End.

They found themselves 1-0 down to a strike from Brad Potts in the first-half and spent the rest of the game struggling to break down Paul Heckingbottom’s side, before a stoppage time own goal from Jack Whatmough made it 1-1.

The result has left the Whites in second place in the Championship table, three points behind Sheffield United in first, and Daniel Farke will surely have his sights set on moving to the top.

One player who could be ruthlessly ditched from the starting line-up in order to help Leeds to go one step further is attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson, who has struggled in recent weeks.

Brenden Aaronson's recent form for Leeds

The USA international lined up as the number ten in the 1-1 draw with Preston and produced an underwhelming display for the West Yorkshire outfit.

He failed to create a single chance for his teammates in 65 minutes on the pitch and missed a ‘big chance’, as Sam Byram’s flick to him in the box presented a fantastic opportunity to hit the target – only for Aaronson to fire well over the bar.

The former RB Salzburg star has now produced one goal, zero assists, and zero ‘big chances’ created in his last eight matches in the Championship for Leeds, with the goal coming in the form of a tap in from close range against Middlesbrough.

Farke must, now, finally ditch him from the starting line-up because of his lack of production at the top end of the pitch, and he could do so by unleashing another player in a new role at Elland Road.

The Leeds star who could learn a new role

Mateo Joseph initially thought he had secured the draw off the bench for the Whites on Saturday, only for it to end up being an own goal from Whatmough, after his run and attempted flick at the near post created the equaliser.

The Spain U21 international, who has played the vast majority of his career as a centre-forward, appeared to be in a slightly deeper role when he came on, with Patrick Bamford ahead of him, and it almost worked perfectly after he jumped onto a loose ball around 25 yards out and drove forward before firing an excellent shot from distance that forced Freddie Woodman to parry it wide.

Joseph, who was hailed as “dynamite” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, is a dynamic forward who can drive with the ball, create chances for his teammates, and link-up play, which is why he could suit playing as a number ten.

As you can see in the table above, the academy graduate has not found his feet as a goalscorer, yet, but has shown impressive creativity, with four ‘big chances’ created in ten starts.

This suggests that he could thrive as an attacking midfielder, in a position to create chances for his teammates, and that is why Farke should finally ditch Aaronson to unleash Joseph in a new role.

Jamie Overton added to England squad for Headingley Test vs New Zealand

Fast bowler likely to make international debut at Headingley as England manage workloads

Vithushan Ehantharajah16-Jun-2022England’s men have reinforced their bowling stocks with Jamie Overton ahead of the third LV= Insurance Test against New ZealandOverton, 28, has been one of Surrey’s stand-out performers in their unbeaten start to the season, clocking the kind of speeds that would make him the quickest on show if he were to debut at Headingley next Thursday. The chances of his inclusion in the XI seem quite high given England took an insurmountable 2-0 lead in the series after victory at Trent Bridge and the need to manage the workload of what has been an unchanged pace trio of James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Matthew Potts.Like his brother Craig – who has also been retained in the 14-man squad – Jamie has been long touted for international honours since the England age-groups. Despite being a frequent flyer on pace programmes, Lions tours and in various squads, the first being a call-up in 2015 for an ODI series against New Zealand, he has yet to be capped for his country. That looks set to change, in part due to a realisation of potential that has seen him take 21 Division One wickets for Surrey in the LV= Insurance County Championship, at a miserly average of 21.61. He has also featured in all seven of the club’s Vitality Blast matches where he has contributed handsomely with the bat, averaging 27 at an emphatic strike rate of 209. Though not an allrounder , such handiness would be welcome in what has been a lengthy English tail.Primarily, though, he will bring some much-needed speed at a time when the likes of Jofra Archer, Mark Wood and Olly Stone are sidelined with injury. Over the last few seasons, he has often been cited as one of the more hostile quicks on the domestic circuit, which was reinforced in his previous appearance against his former county Somerset when he felled brother Craig and Josh Davey. Craig was able to return but Davey was subsequently ruled out of the match. Overton went on to take five wickets in the match as Surrey secured a final-day win by three wickets. He will join the rest of the squad who are due to report to Headingley on Tuesday afternoon as England look to rubber-stamp what has been a blockbuster start to new life under Brendon McCullum, led by Ben Stokes. The pair will run the rule over Overton in training before deciding on which of Anderson, Broad or Potts will be rested, if at all. The trio have taken 30 New Zealand wickets between them, with 39-year-old Anderson, the leader of the pack, in front with 11. Broad, meanwhile, has got through the greater amount of work with 85 overs across the first two Tests. Only Trent Boult, with 87.2, has sent down more this series. The only other change to the squad that reported to Trent Bridge is the omission of the legspinner, Matt Parkinson, who debuted at Lord’s as a concussion substitute for Jack Leach, but has been deemed surplus to requirements for Headingley, following Leach’s return to the side for the second Test. Harry Brook, the Yorkshire batter who was an unused squad member for the first two matches, also remains with the squad.England squad for 3rd Test Ben Stokes (capt), James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Foakes (wk), Jack Leach, Alex Lees, Craig Overton, Jamie Overton, Matthew Potts, Ollie Pope, Joe Root
