The next Stewart: Sunderland could land an "insane" Connolly replacement

Only two points outside of the automatic promotion spots in the Championship table at this moment in time, Sunderland will be hoping 2025 is the year they finally make their long-awaited return to the Premier League happen.

Falling all the way down to League One at one point, the Black Cats are very much now back in promotion contention in the second tier away from any of those nightmares still lingering, with two wins from two picked up in the league so far in January.

Regis Le Bris will hope he gets backed in the January transfer window in order to boost his side’s chances of a dream promotion, with a potent striker very much on the radar.

Sunderland's search for a striker

As reported earlier this week, Sunderland remain in the race to try and sign Stoke City sharpshooter Tom Cannon this month, with his parent club Leicester City perhaps prepared to send him out elsewhere away from the lowly Potters.

Sheffield United are also keen on the clinical 22-year-old’s services, so it remains to be seen whether the Black Cats will come out on top, or if Chris Wilder’s men do indeed have the edge in this ongoing transfer tussle.

If the Wearside outfit were to land the current Stoke hero, fans packed inside the Stadium of Light would be praying that the Republic of Ireland international is a forward of a similar ilk to former goal machine Ross Stewart, who Sunderland have arguably never replaced.

He could also gift the Black Cats another valuable option up top – away from any bold comparisons – with it looking likely that reserve figure Aaron Connolly will be leaving for Millwall this window, with Wilson Isidor no doubt kept on his toes by the loanee’s arrival.

What Cannon can offer Sunderland

Cannon has been a lethal finisher of chances for Stoke this season, even as the Staffordshire side’s season has gone off the boil, with nine strikes tallied up in Championship action. To add further context, Isidor is one short of that total in the league as the Black Cats’ leading man in attack.

With a known reputation for being a reliable poacher now in the EFL, considering the “insane” marksman – as he was labelled by football journalist Pete Smith earlier this season – has fired home 19 career goals in the Championship during a number of fruitful loan moves, it feels likely that he would be a success at Sunderland lining up alongside creative faces like Jobe Bellingham.

Alongside these second-tier heroics, Cannon also fired home a ridiculous 51 goals in total playing for many of Everton’s youth sides before a move to Leicester came to be, with a potential there for the 5 foot 11 ace to become the Black Cats’ next Stewart when assessing their similar deadliness in-front of goal.

Indeed, Stewart was a ruthless attacker for Sunderland when he was still on the books of the Wearside club, with a seriously impressive 40 strikes notched up from 80 clashes, before a move to Southampton was then hampered by recurring injury demons.

Amazingly, even during an injury-disrupted final campaign at the Stadium of Light, the constantly dangerous Scotsman still managed to bag ten strikes from 13 league contests, with his scoring frequency coming in at a devastating 104 mins.

Cannon can equally light up tight games at a moment’s notice, seen in his early strike against Sunderland last time out in the FA Cup, with barely four minutes shy on the clock before he tucked home a cool penalty.

With Connolly’s departure soon to be announced, Le Bris does need more options up top, and he could get the best possible replacement in the form of Cannon if a move does get off the ground.

Havertz upgrade: Arsenal chasing £80m "monster" who can save their season

When it rains, it pours, and that certainly seems to be the case for Arsenal this season.

Over the last week and a bit, Mikel Arteta’s side have dropped points away to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League, lost the first leg of their League Cup semi-final against Newcastle United, and then, to top it all off, lost on penalties to a ten-man Manchester United in the FA Cup.

Yesterday’s defeat felt like a hammer blow to the Gunners’ chances of winning a trophy this season, and while there were poor performances across the pitch from the hosts, the player who has since received the most criticism has been Kai Havertz.

The German international continued his poor form in front of goal from the mid-week defeat and missed a handful of brilliant chances to give his side the lead, so recent reports linking the club to a far more prolific centre-forward who could perhaps save their season should excite fans.

Arsenal chase free-scoring forward

According to a recent report from the Independent’s Chief Football Writer, Miguel Delaney, Arsenal are keen on Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres.

In fact, according to the journalist, the Gunners’ have a ‘growing interest’ in the Swedish superstar.

However, fans might want to pump the breaks somewhat, as Delaney goes on to explain that the former Coventry City ace would cost around £80m, which is a fee the club ‘would rather spend in the summer.’

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

It would be a lot of money to spend halfway through a campaign, but given the circumstances and precipice on which the club feels like it is standing, it’s money they must spend, as not only would Gyokeres be a massive upgrade on Havertz, but he might also just be able to save the team’s season.

How Gyokeres compares to Havertz

So, with Gabriel Jesus looking like he might be out for some time with yet another serious injury, Havertz is undoubtedly Arsenal’s starting striker, meaning that if Gyokeres joined this month, the German would be his most significant competition.

Unfortunately for the former Chelsea ace, and despite the good work he has done for the Gunners over the last year or so, he comes out as a distant second-best when compared to the Sporting CP star.

For example, in just 30 appearances this season, totalling 2570 minutes, the free-scoring “monster,” as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored 32 goals and provided six assists, meaning that he’s currently averaging 1.26 goal involvements every game, or one every 67.6 minutes.

In contrast, the Gunners’ number 29 has scored 12 goals and provided three assists in 27 appearances, totalling 2232 minutes, which comes out to 0.55 goal involvements per game, or one every 148.8 minutes.

The comparison continues to be one-sided when we take a look under the hood and examine their underlying numbers.

Ultimately, while Havertz has been a valuable goalscorer for Arsenal over the last year and a half, his performances over the last week have made the North Londoners’ need for a superstar striker impossible to ignore.

Therefore, although it’ll be incredibly expensive, the club must bring Gyokeres to the Emirates this month.

Not only would he be an instant upgrade on the German, but he might also be good enough to save the Gunners’ season.

    WHAT PETER SCHMEICHEL SAID

Legendary United keeper Peter Schmeichel was highly critical of Onana. He said: "There are so many issues that Ruben Amorim needs to sort out.

“I would be very uncomfortable pointing to one player but it’s not great to watch. You never feel safe. You never feel like going 2-1 up … you always fear the other team are going to come back.”

Sir Alex Ferguson's longtime assistant Mike Phelan suggested it might be time to move on, telling the Telegraph: “That’s the biggest decision as a manager you have to make. £20m midfielder really wants to join Arsenal amid Martin Zubimendi talks

Arsenal are in widely-reported talks to sign Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi for the summer, but he isn’t the only midfielder who could be seriously considering a move to N5 this year.

Arsenal in "advanced" negotiations to sign Zubimendi from Real Sociedad

Earlier this week, Daily Mail journalists Sami Mokbel and Ben Willcocks broke the news that Arsenal are closing in on a deal for Zubimendi, with a plethora of credible news outlets soon backing up their information.

Arsenal offer £25m plus Tomiyasu and Kiwior in part-exchange bid for player

The Gunners are getting creative.

9 ByEmilio Galantini Jan 18, 2025

Fabrizio Romano released his own update just moments after The Mail’s exclusive bombshell, revealing that negotiations are indeed at an “advanced” stage and talks are also underway with the Spaniard’s camp in an attempt to secure his signing for the end of this season.

Mikel Arteta will also be a key factor in persuading Zubimendi to swap his boyhood club for a move to the Premier League, but that isn’t to say it’s a done deal yet, as other reliable media sources report that more elite clubs could still come to the table.

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg stated on Wednesday, via X, that Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Liverpool are all keeping tabs on this situation, despite Arsenal “pushing a lot” to sign the 25-year-old and showing “very concrete” interest.

There’s even been some talk that Arsenal have offered players to Sociedad in talks for Zubimendi, as they attempt to acquire him for a much-lesser fee than his £51 million release clause. This big story is one to watch, as Arteta has targeted Zubimendi “for years”.

“This is one that we’ve been on for years,” said Arsenal-supporting journalist Steve Kay on KS1TV.

“We know Arsenal love this player. We’ve said many times he’s the number one signing. Liverpool nearly got him last year, but he decided he didn’t want to go.

“He’s special, he’s special, speaking to a few people today what he is mainly is a single pivot in that number six mixed in with a bit of a box-to-box at the same time. He’s excellent at playing through the lines, he breaks up play, he’s fantastic.”

Sverre Nypan really wants to join Arsenal with Martin Zubimendi

According to reliable journalist David Ornstein of The Athletic, another midfielder on their radar is Norwegian wonderkid Sverre Nypan.

The 18-year-old, who’s drawn comparisons with captain Martin Odegaard, is rumoured to command a £20 million price tag and is seriously impressing with Rosenborg.

Ornstein reports that Nypan is very keen on making the move to Arsenal, so interim sporting director Jason Ayto won’t have too much trouble convincing the teenager to swap Scandanivia for England.

“There are young players that will be on their agenda now,” said Ornstein on The Athletic’s podcast (via GiveMeSport). “I know I reported recently like Nypan from Rosenberg, one of the top young midfielders from what I’ve heard across the game, he’d be very keen on a move to Arsenal. They like him.”

Nypan’s branded an “extremely exciting” talent to watch out for by pundits, and it appears this isn’t lost on Emirates Stadium chiefs, who are taking note.

“It’s something I try and pass on to the youngsters as well. As cricketers, we are all living our dream, and if you don’t live happily [despite that], what’s the point? It’s small things like these. I don’t try and let negativity seep in. I try to be positive always.”It’s perhaps this mindset that allows Dhawan to accept circumstances easily. Just a one-format player internationally now, Dhawan said he “loves the 50-overs game” and is out to continue his good work from the Caribbean, where he led India to a 3-0 sweep. His 168 runs, including two half-centuries, made him the second-highest run-getter in the series after Shubman Gill.Dhawan is returning to Zimbabwe after nine years. Coming back to Harare is bound to bring back happy memories – in the second ODI of that 2013 tour, he struck a match-winning 116. He hoped the upcoming series would bring even more runs on what he thought would be “great batting wickets”.He was, however, clear that runs wouldn’t come easy. Zimbabwe’s recent run of form – they beat Bangladesh 2-1 earlier this month – should keep India on their toes. “It’s good they won against Bangladesh,” Dhawan said. “I’m sure they’re playing good cricket. It’s good for us, because it will keep us on our toes. We can’t take anything for granted or lightly. We’re here to perform against a good team. It’s always about the process.”Dhawan admitted to not knowing much about the current Zimbabwe side, even though he acknowledged Sikandar Raza was a “good player who has been doing well for many years now”.”We don’t play that much cricket [against each other], but we have all the data,” Dhawan said. “From there, we find out the opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. I guess that is where technology comes in handy. In one game, you get to know the patterns pretty quickly. Even before that we use technology to get going with our planning.”Dhawan was happy to see KL Rahul back. Rahul took over the captaincy, which was initially handed to Dhawan, once his return from injury and illness was confirmed. Rahul will be returning to competitive cricket following a long rehabilitation for a sports hernia and then Covid-19.KL Rahul has taken over the captaincy from Shikhar Dhawan for the Zimbabwe tour•PTI

“It’s very good news that KL is back in the side,” Dhawan said. “He’s one of the main players of the Indian team and with the Asia Cup coming up, it’s going to be a good outing for him. I’m sure he’ll gain a lot from this tour. It’s sad that Washington [Sundar] is out, it is part and parcel of sport. These things happen. Hope that he recovers soon.”Dhawan was also pleased that the IPL has produced several options at the top of the order. The 16-man squad has as many as five opening options: Dhawan aside, there’s Rahul, Gill, Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson.”With more exposure, they’re quite confident,” Dhawan said of his younger colleagues. “Everyone’s different. They have good techniques. The transition for the Indian team has been great due to domestic cricket and IPL. Their confidence levels are high, that’s why they blend into international cricket quite quickly. They’ve been doing so well. We feel great that we’ve got so many options, so it’s a very healthy sign for us.”Dhawan felt the upcoming three-match series was equally an opportunity for Zimbabwe to show their improvements as a team. “It’s good for world cricket that we’re playing each other,” he said. “It will give them confidence. Our young boys will get opportunities in different conditions. It’s only by playing that Zimbabwe will also get better, especially against quality sides. That’s how they will also learn.”

Bowlers, Gurbaz, Najibullah star in Afghanistan's win

They overcame a 74-run stand for the eighth wicket between Dockrell and Hand to keep the series alive

Sruthi Ravindranath12-Aug-2022A superb batting display from Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Najibullah Zadran, followed by a complete performance from the bowling unit took Afghanistan to a win in the third T20I against Ireland in Belfast, as they kept the five-match series alive.Afghanistan bounced back from two consecutive defeats as Gurbaz and Najibullah set up a total of 189 for 5. Ireland were reduced to 85 for 7 in the chase, following which George Dockrell and debutant Fionn Hand took them close with a 74-run stand. But the hosts eventually fell short by 22 runs.Gurbaz steps up after sedate start
A bit of nip in the air made Gurbaz and Hazratullah Zazai – who returned to the side after an illness – start off rather watchfully against the Ireland quicks. Ireland had also gone for an extra seamer in their attack, handing a debut to Graham Hume in place of offspinner Andy McBrine. Afghanistan finished the powerplay with 41 for no loss as the duo kept rotating the strike, following which Gurbaz took control of the scoring. After hitting three consecutive boundaries off Curtis Campher in the ninth over, he took Hand for two fours and a six to move to 49 off 31 balls. An overthrow on the last ball of the over gave Gurbaz his fourth T20I fifty, which also took Afghanistan’s score to 83 for no loss at the end of 10 overs. Josh Little, who produced a Player-of-the-Match performance in the second T20I, finally got the breakthrough with Gurbaz’s wicket.Zazai was still going at a sedate strike rate but he broke the pressure with a massive six over long-on off legspinner Gareth Delany in the 13th over. But just when he had started showing intent to score, he became Hand’s maiden international wicket in the very next over, as he played a slower delivery too soon and edged the ball to a diving Paul Stirling at short third. Zazai took 40 balls in his score of 39.The Zadrans punish the hosts
The Zadrans – Ibrahim and Najibullah – made sure they kept the momentum going despite the two quick wickets. The Ireland quicks had been bowling harder lengths on the day, and Ibrahim, in particular, used that to his advantage – the short-of-length delivery around off from Hand was pulled in front of square for a boundary while a short-ish one from Hume was hoicked through square leg for a six. Little stuck to the shorter lengths even as Ibrahim hit him for two consecutive fours in the 18th over. But the ploy finally worked on the fourth delivery when he ended up ramping one straight into the wicketkeeper’s hands. With captain Mohammad Nabi arriving at the crease, Afghanistan were all set for a big finish. But it was Najibullah who made the statement. After plundering two sixes off Hume to finish off the 19th over, he cracked a couple of more in the final over to take Afghanistan’s total to 189. An attempt to flick a full toss fine brought an end to his stay at the crease on the last ball, but by then Afghanistan already had a match-winning total on the board.Where’s the intent?
Ireland came into this game on the back of two wins but that did not show in their batting. Fazalhaq Farooqi plucked out the experienced opening pair of Stirling and Balbirnie cheaply, following which Naveen-ul-Haq dented them further by removing Harry Tector and Curtis Campher. At the end of the powerplay, they were 36 for 4, going at a run-rate of six when they actually needed to go at 11 per over.Fionn Hand and George Dockrell added 74 in just 38 balls•Sportsfile/Getty ImagesWhile Lorcan Tucker displayed some aggression, smashing a slower ball from Farooqi over midwicket and then taking on spinners Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan for boundaries, most of the runs for Ireland otherwise came from ones and twos. There was another slide that followed: Mujeeb removed Tucker and Mark Adair, while Nabi struck between these two dismissals to send Gareth Delany back. Afghanistan had pretty much stamped their authority by then, with Ireland reeling at 85 for 7. Enter Dockrell and Hand.Dockrell, Hand take Ireland close
It could’ve been a legendary chase. But Ireland could come only close – which has been their story for most of the summer. The duo didn’t seem to give up. After Hand punished Nabi for three fours in the 14th over, Dockrell followed with two fours and a six off Rashid in the 15th. They not only targeted the spinners but also went after the fast bowlers – even Naveen, who was the best bowler of the day. After Dockrell smashed Naveen’s slower short ball mid-off in the 17th over, Hand smoked a short ball over extra cover to finish off the over to bring the equation down to 51 off 18 balls. Dockrell continued the carnage, hitting two fours off Rashid in the next over as he brought up a 28-ball fifty. Rashid went wicketless for the third game in a row – before this series, he had never gone wicketless in two successive T20Is.Hand hit another six in the next over before Naveen finally made him his third victim of the evening. With 28 needing off the last over and despite Dockrell staying till the end, the equation proved too much for Ireland. Azmatullah Omarzai ended up giving away just five runs off the over as Afghanistan clawed their way back into the series.

BOM INÍCIO DO CEARÁ

VOZÃO ABRE A CONTAGEM

CEARÁ FECHA A CONTA

Chelsea hold agent talks this week over signing "outrageous" £19m forward

Chelsea have held discussions with intermediaries in the last few days over a potential forward signing, as those agents attempt to find their player a new home in January and reach out to Stamford Bridge officials.

Chelsea scour January market for new attackers in January

Enzo Maresca’s side are believed to be targeting a fresh attacking option before deadline day on February 3rd, leading to their widely reported interest in the likes of Bayern Munich starlet Mathys Tel, Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens and Man United winger Alejandro Garnacho.

Chelsea make "formal" bid to sign "exciting" £65m forward for Maresca

The Italian could witness a busy end to their transfer window.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 24, 2025

The Telegraph’s Matt Law wrote earlier this week that Chelsea are considering Tel, Garnacho and Gittens to bolster Maresca’s forward line, while other reports from South America claim a “formal” offer has already gone in for the Man Utd man.

Garnacho’s exit from Old Trafford is looking more and more like a realistic possibility, given United’s PSR concerns, and it is believed that Chelsea could look to take full advantage of this situation to snap up the Argentine.

The forward’s rumoured price tag has varied, but it has gone as high as £65 million according to some media sources, making him an expensive potential acquisition mid-season.

Taking this into account, BlueCo may also be wise to keep their eyes on further alternatives to Garnacho, and Lyon star Rayan Cherki could be a very prudent option.

Rayan Cherki in action for Lyon

The Frenchman is widely regarded as a very exciting prospect, and Lyon’s provisional relegation to Ligue 2, as a result of their financial situation, means Cherki could go on the cheap.

His price tag has dropped to as low as £19 million, as per Fabrizio Romano, which could be too good of an opportunity for elite sides to pass up.

Chelsea hold talks with intermediaries over Rayan Cherki

According to The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey, agents have spoken to Chelsea “in recent days” over Cherki and his availability, as they scour the market to find their client a new club this month.

The Blues are keen on him, as are Arsenal, Liverpool, Man United, Newcastle, Tottenham, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton and West Ham, who’ve also held discussions with Cherki’s camp.

That being said, all these sides, including Chelsea, have concerns over Cherki’s attitude to fulfilling his potential. However, if the 21-year-old does begin to perform at the level he can, journalist Dean Jones suggests he’d be an excellent signing.

“He’s just different, this player,” said Jones on the Ranks FC Ultras podcast recently.

“If you haven’t seen Cherki play, then just either stop the pod and go and watch him on YouTube for 10 minutes and then come back or just go watch him while we’re talking right now. Because his skill level is outrageous. He feels like he could become one of the best players in the world.”

Hardik 'more than happy' to take over full-time captaincy in the future

Having captained Gujarat Titans to IPL glory in their first season and led India to three wins in as many T20Is in a stand-in capacity, allrounder Hardik Pandya is open to a full-time leadership role in the future.”Yeah! why not? If I get an opportunity in the future, I’ll be more than happy to do that, but right now we have the World Cup, and we have the Asia Cup [coming up],” Hardik said after India clinched a 4-1 series victory over West Indies at Lauderhill in Florida. “We’re going to focus on that and make sure as a team what we’re doing, we continue [with that] and make sure that all the skillsets, which we are learning we can keep getting better at it, and at the same point of time enjoy the game as well.Related

Hardik took over captaincy in the absence of Rohit Sharma, who had been rested for Sunday’s game and oversaw an 88-run victory – India’s joint fourth-biggest, in terms of runs in T20Is.India have used as many as seven captains across formats this year. More recently, ahead of the tour to the West Indies and the USA, Hardik replaced Rishabh Pant as India’s T20I vice-captain. Rohit is enthused by the growth of multiple leaders in the group.”I know it’s very exciting to create so many leaders around the team because it’s always a good sign,” Rohit told Star Sports’ show. “And you want the guys to handle the pressure, who understand the game and know each other really well. And when they are leading the team, all these things can happen.”I think it’s very important to have that leadership, but obviously, we play the IPL, and it’s a ten-team tournament. So, there will be ten captains who at some stage will be a part of the Indian team as well. I think it’s fantastic because honestly, my job is much lesser as these guys understand everything pretty well. So, it’s just about if someone’s having a thought, how am I going to back that up. For me as captain that is my role and that is what I’m trying to do.”India have had seven captains across formats this year•Associated Press

India have now won six of their last seven T20I series – the one against South Africa was shared after rain washed out the decider in Bengaluru in June – since the 2021 T20 World Cup. Hardik attributed India’s consistency to the rich talent pool and the security given to the players by the team management, echoing Dinesh Karthik’s comments.”I think [it’s] the kind of talent that all the players have and the kind of freedom we’re getting now. This is the new India with the way they’re playing. I can see a lot of people playing with freedom, I can see a lot of people expressing themselves and not worrying about the result, which makes us more dangerous as a group. When you don’t have anything to lose, you kind of go out there and do something special.”The credit goes to the management and the guys and the whole group to kind of make sure we create the environment where the players go and kind of enjoy and make sure they’re just giving their best – without being worried about whether they’re going to get picked or dropped. That adds more value and makes us more dangerous.”Sunday’s game was the first instance of spinners taking all ten wickets in a men’s T20I. With West Indies clubbing their right-hand batters together at the top in the absence of the rested Kyle Mayers, Hardik tossed the new ball to Axar Patel, who got another game ahead of Ravindra Jadeja, and responded with the wickets of West Indies’ makeshift top three inside the powerplay. Wristspinners Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi then shared the rest of the seven wickets between them as the hosts folded for 100 while chasing 189.”I wanted to make sure I gave Axar the new ball, and I wanted him to kind of get the confidence back and bowl some tight overs,” Hardik said. “At the same point in time, I know the kind of bowler he is. When he bowls a couple of tight overs, he creates chances, and the wristspinners have some weapons where the batters kind of find them difficult to pick. So, it was not pre-planned, but obviously, the wicket and the batters showed us that spin is going to be a big factor. They kept taking wickets, I didn’t have to do much; I just had to hand over the ball and let them enjoy.”India’s next T20I assignment is the Asia Cup starting on August 27 in the UAE. The India squad for that tournament could pretty much be the one for the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia for which India are ready, according to Hardik.”It’s just about how we can keep getting better,” Hardik said. “I think preparation-wise or the environment-wise, we are 100% ready, but in this sport, I feel you don’t stop learning. So for us, yes, we are ready, but at the same time if we make sure we keep learning and make sure whenever the opportunity comes, we rise to the occasion and enjoy as many games we can win for the country.”
