Gill, Buttler and Sai Sudharsan help GT post 224 against SRH

GT had their biggest-ever powerplay of 82 for 0, as the SRH bowlers struggled in Ahmedabad

ESPNcricinfo staff02-May-2025The Gujarat Titans (GT) top three continued their purple patch, scoring 48, 76 and 24, to help them post 224 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). B Sai Sudharsan, Jos Buttler and Shubman Gill are now Nos. 1, 3 and 4 on the leader board for runs in this IPL. Gill scored 76 off 38 balls, Sudharsan 48 off 23, and Buttler 64 off 37.Buttler’s innings was important because it came when the SRH bowlers had got their act together. At the start, SRH put in arguably the worst bowling performance of the year. Mohammed Shami was sluggish, and struggled on the line on both sides of the wicket; Pat Cummins offered three half volleys in his one over; and Harshal Patel bowled full tosses. The result was GT’s biggest-ever powerplay, 82 for 0, without playing a shot in anger. A measure of how little they had to venture was how only four of these runs came through false shots.Shami offered a leg-side freebie to Gill in the first over, and then got cut and pulled for five fours by Sai Sudharsan in the third. Cummins then provided Gill the leg-up by bowling in the slot for two fours and a six. The bleeding stopped only when Zeeshan Ansari had Sai Sudharsan caught at the wicket while trying to run the ball behind square. It resulted in two overs without a boundary, but Gill and Buttler picked up again. The first unforced error from GT came at the end of the 13th over when Gill just ambled through for a single, allowing Heinrich Klaasen to pull off a deflection run-out MS Dhoni would be proud of.Washington Sundar never really got a measure of the pace of the pitch, which should suggest GT had put on a good score. However, a tired Buttler in the 40-plus degrees of heat found enough sixes to take GT past 220.

Man Utd women's player ratings vs Valerenga: Jess Park shines again as Maya Le Tissier fires Red Devils to historic first win in Women's Champions League proper

It was by no means a classic but Manchester United will certainly never forget the events of Wednesday night, as the Red Devils beat Valerenga 1-0 to secure their first-ever win in the Women's Champions League proper. While their formal European journey might not have started with the sort of glamour fixture many would associate the competition with, it was one that felt important to emerge from with all three points given some of the challenges ahead and United did exactly that, thanks to a first-half penalty from captain Maya Le Tissier.

There was an air of fortune in how the hosts' goal came about, with Julia Zigiotti Olme's seemingly nothing ball striking the arm of Arna Eiriksdottir in the box to give Le Tissier the chance to break the deadlock just past the half-hour mark. United, though, had been threatening to score – most notably when Melvine Malard failed to square the ball to the unmarked Elisabeth Terland, instead hitting it right at Tove Enblom in the visiting goal.

There were not many chances in the game but it was often those in red coming closest to adding to the scoreline, be it Enblom thwarting Jess Park just after the restart or both Malard and Terland firing just off target as the game wound down. There would be a slight late scare for United, when Elise Thorsnes' effort fizzed just wide of Phallon Tullis-Joyce's far post, but Marc Skinner's side were able to comfortably see the game out in the end, making them the only English team to win in Europe this week following defeat for holders Arsenal and Chelsea's shock draw.

Julia Zigiotti Olme (6/10):

Surprisingly poor in possession given how tidy she has looked since joining from Bayern Munich in the summer. Made up for it somewhat with her work off the ball.

Hinata Miyazawa (7/10):

Moved the ball well in deeper positions to ensure United dominated and pushed on to contribute in attack from time to time, too.

Ella Toone (6/10):

When United did have moments in a game featuring few, she was often involved.

Jess Park (7/10):

Continued to impress with her fantastic footwork in tight areas and great movement.

Elisabeth Terland (6/10):

Melvine Malard (6/10):

Battled well off the ball and had some bright moments, though should've squared to Terland in the first half after winning the ball high.

Savinho upgrade: Spurs now eyeing "one of the best forwards in Europe"

It’s safe to say the last few weeks have been incredibly Spursy. From the lows of missing out on Eberechi Eze to the highs of defeating Manchester City and then announcing Xavi Simons on Saturday, Tottenham Hotspur supporters have been through the wringer.

That was capped off this weekend. In front of their new arrival, Thomas Frank’s side came unstuck for the first time this season, defeated by Bournemouth.

While Frank’s tenure at Spurs has so far been pretty smooth on the pitch, behind the scenes, the transfer business has been tricky.

They missed out on Eze and Morgan Gibbs-White, two of the Premier League’s finest English talents, while a deal for Savinho has been in the works for a while now, but they are likely to miss out on him as well.

Spurs' Savinho alternative on deadline day

A number of weeks ago, it was revealed that Spurs had opened talks with Manchester City in an attempt to bring Savinho to north London.

A deal looked possible but the further we’ve got into the window, the less likely the chances of concluding a deal have become.

The Brazilian has missed the opening few weeks of the campaign with an injury but recent reports suggest that City aren’t too keen on losing the winger. Still, the Londoners are pressing on with their attempts to sign the player.

As a result, Spurs have to look elsewhere, and according to TEAMtalk, one alternative could be Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The former Everton and Fulham man is enjoying a fine time of it in Italy but he wants out and has already moved back to London in a bid to force his way out of Bergamo for good.

One destination could well be Tottenham Hotspur. The report suggests that the Serie A side have been in talks with clubs across Europe to find him a new home and should the Lilywhites fail in their pursuit of Savinho, Lookman is likely to emerge as a prime target.

A deal could be done in the region of £35m-£40m in the dying embers of the transfer window.

How Lookman compares to Savinho

It’s been a transfer window fraught with hurdles for Spurs but if they can conclude a deal for another new forward before the window slams shut at 7pm on Monday, they’d be in a fabulous place to challenge for a top four berth come next May.

With Frank in need of finding more creativity, Savinho would certainly tick a lot of boxes.

Last season, the Brazil winger supplied 13 assists in all competitions and ranked among the top 13% of wingers in Europe’s top five leagues for assists, via FBRef.

However, despite his ability to create goal-scoring opportunities, his lack of goal threat must be outlined.

In 2024/25, Savinho found the net on just three occasions, only one of which came in the Premier League. This is a problem, particularly when comparing him with Lookman.

The Nigeria international has come a long way since that dire penalty miss in a Fulham shirt and is now “one of the best forwards in Europe”, as described by journalist Oma Akatugba.

Why? Well, he’s become a true superstar of Serie A, netting on 20 occasions in 40 games last season. During the 2023/24 term, he scored 17, seven of which came on the left wing and a further seven came as a centre-forward, highlighting his versatility.

So, unlike Savinho, he’s capable of playing in a plethora of positions and he’s a genuine goalscorer. He’s also capable of creating for his teammates, registering ten assists in 2023/24 and seven in 2024/25.

Analysing the data, it’s evident that Savinho is the better dribbler and carrier of possession.

Yet, despite the City forward trumping Lookman for overall assists in 2024/25, the latter proved that he can be equally, if not more creative, registering a higher volume of key passes and thus, also registering a better rate of expected assists.

So, depending on where you were to field the Atalanta attacker, he could provide everything Savinho does, just with an incredibly greater goal threat.

At just £40m, this feels like a snip for Spurs if they enter the race at the last minute.

Dream for Bowen: West Ham can forget Lampard by hiring "outstanding" manager

It feels like it could be a long old season for West Ham United this year.

The East Londoners may have beaten Nottingham Forest last time out, but with three defeats before that, it feels like Graham Potter is already on borrowed time.

It’s not just the defeats that have been worrying, but the manner of them, losing 3-0 to newly promoted Sunderland, being thrashed 5-1 by London rivals Chelsea, and blowing a lead away to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Unsurprisingly, the Irons have been linked with a host of potential replacements in recent weeks, including former player Frank Lampard.

Frank Lampard could replace Graham Potter

With just six wins in 23 games, it’s not hard to imagine any number of managers doing a better job than Potter in East London, including Lampard.

The Hammers have reportedly already been in contact with the former player, and it’s easy to see why they might consider him a worthwhile gamble.

Since taking charge of Coventry City, the 47-year-old has won 20 games, drawn seven and lost 12, which isn’t too bad at all considering the hyper-competitive nature of the Championship.

Moreover, since the season began, the Sky Blues have been absolutely flying, scoring 14 goals, conceding just six and taking eight points from a possible 12.

Moreover, while the former Chelsea legend didn’t exactly blow anyone away the last time he managed in the Premier League, he was still able to keep Everton from going down and averaged 1.75 points per game during his first stint in the Stamford Bridge dugout.

In all, Lampard looks to have further developed as a manager and could be the answer to West Ham’s Potter-shaped problems.

However, there is another manager on the market who we think would do an even better job at the London Stadium and help the likes of Jarrod Bowen reach another level.

The manager West Ham should hire over Lampard

Now, although we think Lampard would do a better job managing West Ham than Potter, an even better option than him might be Marco Rose.

Manager Focus

Granted, the German manager hasn’t actually been linked with the club yet, but since leaving RB Leipzig in March of this year, he has been without a club.

So, why would the East Londoners want to hire the 48-year-old?

RB Leipzig coachMarcoRosebefore the match

Well, one of the most significant reasons is that he’s a manager who tends to get the very best out of his attacking talent, and as a result, plays some exhilarating football.

For example, in the 20/21 season, Borussia Dortmund scored 75 goals in the Bundesliga, but then by the end of the following season, when Rose was in charge, they’d moved up a place in the table and scored 85 goals.

The same happened at Borrussia Mönchengladbach, as they finished the 18/19 season having scored 55 goals, which increased to 66 the following campaign and 64 the year after that.

Moreover, while the effectiveness of Leipzig’s attack did vary a bit more during his tenure, the former RB Salzburg boss led them to a DFB Pokal triumph.

So, just imagine what the “outstanding” tactician, as dubbed by Dortmund legend Marco Reus, could do with players like Jarrod Bowen, who, even in this system, continues to be a real goalscoring threat.

Finally, even if you ignore the argument that he’ll bring a more entertaining brand of football to the club, you can just look at his overall managerial record.

In 458 matches, he has managed to maintain an average of 1.98 points per game – and win two league titles in Austria – whereas Lampard has averaged 1.51 points per game and Potter an even less impressive 1.50.

Ultimately, even though he hasn’t been linked with the club, West Ham should do what they can to hire Rose, and not only would he be an upgrade on Potter, but his attacking style could get even more out of Bowen.

Bhuvneshwar has 'the perfect answer' for DC on tricky Delhi pitch

“He’s got two-three really good variations, and it’s very tough to line Bhuvi up [thinking] that he is only going to bowl this delivery,” Jaffer says

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Apr-20251:41

Jaffer: Bhuvneshwar’s variations crucial to his success

In a T20 game, one over – a good one or a bad one, depending on your perspective – swings things completely, even decides the outcome. On Sunday night in Delhi, Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivered one such over. Delhi Capitals (DC) were going all right on a tricky pitch and, in the 17th over, Bhuvneshwar took out KL Rahul, who you would expect to take the innings deep, and Ashutosh Sharma, one of the batters DC look to for quick runs at the close. Not for the first time, as Anil Kumble put it, “Bhuvi had the perfect answer”.”He’s always been very special as a bowler. Whichever team he has played for, he picks up wickets in the powerplay, he’s learnt the tricks and the trade of what needs to be done in the back end, and he’s very consistent,” Kumble said on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) had beaten DC by six wickets to climb to the top of the IPL 2025 points table.”Barely a game where the batters get under him and then put him under pressure. On a surface like this, he bowled the perfect second spell. The crucial wicket of KL Rahul. KL Rahul, the idea was probably to take it deep and then target the faster bowlers and target the last three or four overs, maximise those four overs. And Bhuvi had the perfect answer.”Related

Bhuvneshwar has never been the sort to grab the headlines, attract a lot of attention. His calling card has been consistency, as Kumble said, and doing what he is capable of as well as possible, day after day, whichever team, whichever format. Now 35 and seemingly out of the frame when it comes to international cricket, Bhuvneshwar continues to evolve as a white-ball bowler. This IPL, you might not have noticed him, but he has been a fantastic support act to Josh Hazlewood, the Purple Cap holder, and Krunal Pandya, who also seems to have reinvented himself with his new team. Bhuvneshwar has 12 wickets from nine games and an economy rate of 8.35. There was just the one game this season where he didn’t get a wicket and just two games – against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the high-scoring Wankhede Stadium and against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at home in a game RCB won – that he has been expensive. On Sunday, DC might have been looking at a total slightly higher than the 162 they ended with when Rahul was out there with Tristan Stubbs. Second ball of the 17th, Bhuvneshwar pitched the ball up, scrambled seam, Rahul went downtown but couldn’t get enough on the ball and was caught in the deep. Fifth ball, Ashutosh thought the slower legcutter was a good ball to dab down behind point. It was so slow, though, that Ashutosh was done and dusted with whatever he was attempting before the ball arrived. And bowled him.2:38

Can RCB and DC both finish in the top four?

Bhuvneshwar ended with 3 for 33 on the night.”I think the two or three variations that he has… the yorker is absolutely spot on; the way Bhuvi bowls he hardly gives any width; and he uses that hard-length delivery which surprises the batters,” Wasim Jaffer said on the same show about what makes one of the older bowlers in the competition remain so relevant.Stubbs hit 34 of 18 towards the end to give DC a decent finish, but take that over from Bhuvneshwar out, and RCB might well have been chasing more than they did. Not only because of the 17th, but the 20th too, where another slower delivery got the better of Stubbs and only six runs were scored.”Sometimes they [the batters] expect the yorkers or maybe the slower ball; he uses the knuckleball. So he’s got two-three really good variations,” Jaffer said. “And it’s very tough to line Bhuvi up [thinking] that he is only going to bowl this delivery.”

Memphis Depay in line for new Corinthians contract despite ex-Man Utd attacker's feud with Brazilian side over unpaid bonuses

Memphis Depay could remain at Corinthians beyond 2026 despite a dispute over unpaid bonuses. The 31-year-old Dutch attacker has been key for the Sao Paulo giants since arriving from Atletico Madrid and Corinthians are reportedly keen to extend his contract once their current financial obligations are settled.

  • Corinthians weighing Depay contract extension amid bonus disputes

According to , Corinthians are considering a contract extension for Depay, who is currently tied to the Brazilian club until mid-2026. The Netherlands star has become a key figure for the side, scoring seven goals in 11 games at the end of last season and helping them secure the Paulista title. However, financial issues at the club have complicated matters, with unpaid bonuses and signing fee instalments still outstanding.

Chief Financial Officer Emerson Piovesan admitted the club’s difficulties while speaking to , describing it as “the biggest challenge of my life.” Corinthians have stated that fulfilling the agreements in the current contract is their top priority before discussing any extension. Once these obligations are resolved, the club is likely to offer Depay a renewal to maintain continuity and retain one of their most influential players.

Ex-Barca & Man Utd forward still breaking records for Netherlands

Depay’s impact extends beyond Brazil, as he continues to shine for the Netherlands. After surpassing Robin van Persie as the Dutch national team’s all-time top scorer last month, he followed it up by overtaking Wesley Sneijder as the record assist holder when he set up two goals in the 4-0 win against Finland on Sunday. His international tally now stands at 54 goals and 36 assists, cementing his legacy as a record-breaking Oranje forward.

Having previously played for Manchester United, Lyon, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, Depay has established himself as a global star. Despite challenges in Europe, he has embraced Brazilian football and cultivated a cult following at Corinthians. His unique persona, as a footballer, rapper and philanthropist, has also enhanced his status in Sao Paulo.

  • Standoff over unpaid bonuses and contract complications

The contract saga has been complicated by ongoing disputes over unpaid bonuses. Reports suggest Depay is owed €1.7 million in performance-related bonuses, alongside a €1m instalment of his signing bonus, which was due in mid-September 2025. These financial disagreements sparked rumours that the striker could terminate his contract early, with Turkish side Besiktas briefly linked to a potential move.

Despite these tensions, no transfer materialised before the deadline, and Corinthians remain keen to resolve matters amicably. The club’s cautious approach reflects their financial constraints while ensuring they retain their star forward, whose performances have been instrumental in revitalising their attack.

Up next for Depay and Corinthians

Once current payments are settled, Corinthians are expected to open discussions for a new deal with Depay, potentially extending his stay beyond 2026. The Dutch striker’s presence will be crucial as the club navigates the domestic league and prepares for upcoming competitions.

Depay’s international form also positions him for further milestones with Netherlands, making him a key player both for Corinthians and on the global stage. The resolution of his contract issues will determine whether he remains in Sao Paulo long-term or considers a move abroad, ensuring all eyes remain on the striker in the coming months.

Deal close: Man Utd and Ratcliffe set to sign teenage gem ahead of Barcelona

Manchester United and Sir Jim Ratcliffe now look likely to pip Barcelona to the signing of an exciting young midfielder, as they look to build towards the future.

Lammens set for Man Utd debut

The Red Devils return to action on Saturday lunchtime, making the trip to a Brentford side who many have tipped to be in a relegation fight this season.

While United have again flattered to deceive of late, their victory at home to Chelsea last weekend has given them a real chance of stringing together three Premier League wins in a row, should they get the better of the Bees on Saturday and then Sunderland at Old Trafford this weekend.

In terms of team selection away to Brentford, it looks as though recent signing Senne Lammens will make his debut for the Red Devils, with reliable journalist Samuel Luckhurst saying he will be preferred to Altay Bayindir between the sticks.

United supporters will be hoping that the 23-year-old proves to be the solution in goal for Ruben Amorim, following the doomed spell of Andre Onana, as they look to find their first elite goalkeeper since David De Gea. Now, an exciting United transfer update has emerged.

Man Utd set to sign teenage midfielder ahead of Barcelona

According to a fresh update from Africa Foot, Manchester United and Ratcliffe are “very close” to completing the signing of Bsport Academie teenager Mouhamed Dabo.

The 17-year-old has been on trial with the Red Devils in recent weeks, and it now looks as though they have done enough to beat Barcelona to his signature after impressing United officials at Carrington.

At just 17 years of age, Dabo isn’t exactly a household name yet, especially as he isn’t plying his trade in Europe, but the idea of United signing any young player also liked by Barcelona is encouraging.

For too long, they have focused too much on the present instead of building for the future, and snapping up the brightest teenagers in the game is the right approach to take, as well as signing top-quality proven players at the same time.

Dabo, captain of Senegal’s U17 side, is a midfielder with so much promise, and United need to be looking at the middle of the park as a key area of focus, having too often looked imbalanced there in recent years.

Granted, the Senegalese wouldn’t arrive as a starter from the off, but if he reaches his potential, he could be the man to eventually excel in front of the defence, with United coaches already impressed with his “clean tackling, vision, composure, ball control, leadership, relentless work, progressive passing, and pace control.”

Bumrah-powered MI take on PBKS for spot in the final

Big picture: A mouth-watering knockout

After 72 matches and two gruelling months of play-travel-play, with a break in between, only three teams are left standing in IPL 2025: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI). While RCB have already qualified for the final, MI will meet PBKS in another crunch game on Sunday to identify the other finalists.Five-time champions vs a team that is in quest for its first title. • How PBKS marched into their first IPL playoffs in 11 years

The two teams have had contrasting paths to Qualifier 2. Around mid-April, MI were second from bottom, with just a solitary win in five games. But they went on to do MI things to storm into the playoffs and knock out Gujarat Titans (GT) on Friday. As for PBKS, they were the form team in the league phase, topping the points table before they suffered a rude jolt in Qualifier 1 against RCB.The reward for finishing in the top two is another crack at the final. PBKS had earned that reward after beating MI in Jaipur earlier this week. Another win against MI on Sunday will guarantee a first-time IPL champion. It’s quite unusual for an IPL team to have four uncapped Indian batters in their top seven, but Ricky Ponting and Iyer have unlocked their potential, transforming PBKS into an explosive batting line-up that has posted 200 in seven of their 15 innings. While their style of play fell flat on a New Chandigarh surface that offered substantial seam movement and variable bounce, it could work on the truer pitches in Ahmedabad. In contrast, MI’s batting revolves around battle-hardened internationals, with just one uncapped player in their top seven. After Ryan Rickelton’s departure, Jonny Bairstow seamlessly slotted into the opening slot on his franchise debut, his salvo setting the base for a 200-plus total on Friday. Suryakumar and Hardik have been reeling off the big hits in the middle order, but it is Bumrah who continues to be their potent point of difference, turning 20-over innings into 16.In the Eliminator, MI were without Deepak Chahar (hamstring niggle) and were even hindered by dew, but nothing could stop Bumrah from yorking Washington Sundar with perhaps the ball of the tournament. In the spotlight: Shreyas Iyer and Hardik Pandya

In Qualifier 1, Shreyas Iyer tried to slog-pull a Josh Hazlewood delivery that was neither short nor full, and ended up nicking it behind. His dismissal precipitated PBKS’ slide in New Chandigarh, where he has managed only 27 runs in five innings this season. A potentially flatter pitch in Ahmedabad could suit his – and PBKS’ – attacking approach. Iyer has hit 31 sixes in 302 balls this season. Only Suryakumar (35), Mitchell Marsh (37) and Nicholas Pooran (40) have struck more. When he was captaining GT, Hardik Pandya was more of an anchor than a hitter, but this season as MI’s captain, he has been less of an anchor and more of a hitter, giving their innings the finishing kick. Between overs 17 and 20, he has clattered 109 off 53 balls at a strike rate of 205.66, the second highest among 16 batters who have faced at least 50 balls in this phase. Only Heinrich Klaasen is ahead of Hardik with a strike rate of 237.03.Both PBKS and MI have hitting depth, which has perhaps allowed Iyer and Hardik to bat with greater freedom this IPL.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Team news and likely XIIs: Chahal set to return

Yuzvendra Chahal, who missed PBKS’ last three games, including Qualifier 1, with a wrist injury, bowled on the eve of Qualifier 2 and looks set to return and strengthen the attack. If PBKS bat first, Chahal might come in as Impact Player in the second innings when they bowl.Punjab Kings (probable): 1 Prabhsimran Singh, 2 Priyansh Arya, 3 Josh Inglis (wk), 4 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 5 Nehal Wadhera, 6 Shashank Singh, 7 Marcus Stoinis, 8 Azmatullah Omarzai, 9 Harpreet Brar/Vyshak Vijaykumar, 10 Kyle Jamieson, 11 Arshdeep Singh, 12 Yuzvendra ChahalChahar and Richard Gleeson are nursing hamstring issues, and it remains to be seen if they are fit for Qualifier 2. While Chahar missed the Eliminator, Gleeson left the field midway through the final over on Friday. He will have a short turnaround before Qualifier 2 on Sunday. If he doesn’t recover in time, his England compatriot Reece Topley is likely to replace him.Mumbai Indians (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Tilak Varma, 5 Hardik Pandya (capt), 6 Naman Dhir, 7 Mitchell Santner, 8 Raj Bawa, 9 Richard Gleeson/Reece Topley, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Trent Boult, 12 Ashwani Kumar

The big question

Pitch and conditions

Sunday’s match will most likely be played on the red-soil pitch that hosted Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). Six of the seven games in Ahmedabad have been won by teams batting first this season. There were spells of mild drizzle during PBKS’ training session on the eve of Qualifier 2.

Key stats

  • Chahal has the wood over both Bairstow and Suryakumar in the IPL. The legspinner has dismissed Bairstow four times in six IPL innings while keeping him to 29 off 35 balls. Chahal has also limited Suryakumar to 83 off 71 balls while dismissing him three times in the IPL.
  • Bumrah has dominated Marcus Stoinis in the IPL. The match-up reads: 28 runs, 36 balls, three wickets.
  • Rohit Sharma has made four 50-plus scores in an IPL season for the first time since 2016.
  • Iyer is one away from 50 wins as IPL captain.

Emma Lamb, Grace Potts team up for Lancashire win

Grace Potts’ 4 for 37 leads excellent bowling effort against The Blaze before Emma Lamb’s 74 anchors Lancashire pursuit

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay11-May-2025Lancashire 226 for 6 (Lamb 74, Cross 38*, Threlkeld 35*, Gordon 3-33) beat The Blaze 222 (Claridge 63, Jones 52, Potts 4-37) by four wicketsA half century by Emma Lamb and List A best bowling by Grace Potts helped Lancashire Women complete a Metro Bank Women’s One-Day Cup double over leaders The Blaze at Emirates Old Trafford.Potts’ 4 for 37 led an excellent bowling effort by the Lancashire attack on a slow wicket that restricted the visitors to a below-par 222 all out from 48.2 overs with half-centuries by England wicketkeeper Amy Jones and Ella Claridge.Lamb, the leading run-scorer in the competition, boosted her chances of gaining international selection with an excellent 74 in front of the watching England Head Coach Charlotte Edwards but three wickets by The Blaze skipper Kirstie Gordon threatened to swing the game the way of the visitors with Lancashire 155 for 6 after 32 overs. It took a vital partnership of 71 runs in 15.2 overs between captain Ellie Threlkeld and England all-rounder Kate Cross for the seventh wicket to take Lancashire to a four-wicket victory with 16 balls to spare.Lancashire openers Lamb and Eve Jones came into this match averaging 105 for the first wicket in the competition this season and the pair progressed confidently to post their fifty from just 47 balls after taking advantage of some wayward early bowling by The Blaze. Both played some eye-catching drives and pulls with Lamb dancing down the wicket to drive Gordon for six, so it was something of a surprise when Jones tamely drove a return catch to The Blaze skipper for 33 to end the opening stand at 88 in the 15th over.Sarah Glenn trapped Katie Mack for a duck in the following over and Gordon, playing her first match of the campaign after returning from injury, dragged her side back into the game with two further wickets, Seren Smale stumped for six and Fi Morris caught at mid-off for 3 to peg Lancashire back to 111 for 4 midway through the 21st over.An unperturbed Lamb, who had reached her fifty off 55 balls, reined in her attacking instincts as Lancashire attempted to consolidate but The Blaze continued to squeeze with Ailsa Lister falling to an excellent diving catch at deep midwicket by Kathryn Bryce off Josie Groves for 15.The key of Lamb followed when she nicked behind down the leg side off Kathryn Bryce at the end of the 32nd over to offer The Blaze increasing hope with six wickets down and 67 runs still required. But some good steady batting by Threlkeld (35 not out) and Cross (38 not out) chipped away at the remaining runs, the pair posting their 50 stand off 73 balls, before Cross sealed victory with the winning runs in the 48th over.Early pressure applied by Cross and Mahika Gaur after Lancashire had won the toss brought reward with the wicket of Tammy Beaumont for 11 well caught at mid-on by Fi Morris off Cross.Kathryn Bryce upped the tempo hitting four fours, but that good intent also proved to be her downfall when she drove Sophie Morris to Cross at mid-on for 22 and the left arm spinner was celebrating a double success four deliveries later when Sarah Bryce edged behind down the leg side for 2.A crucial double-strike by Potts increased the pressure with Georgia Elwiss playing on for 19 and Georgie Boyce clipping to Fi Morris at midwicket for 4 with The Blaze struggling at 97 for 5 in the 23rd over.Jones found excellent support from Claridge as the pair rebuilt the innings with a 44-run partnership in ten overs, Jones pulling Gaur for six to reach her half century from 74 balls but caught at fine leg for 52 three balls later when repeating the shot.Glenn sliced Lamb to Gaur at backward point for 12 and Potts, having limped off earlier with a knee problem, returned to trap Gordon lbw for a duck.Groves and Claridge then added a useful 32 runs for the ninth wicket with Claridge progressing to a gritty half century from 68 balls with some nice footwork before she was the last wicket to fall in the 49th over after making 63 of the visitor’s 222 all out.
