Man Utd now serious about hijacking Chelsea for £70m star, they're frontrunners

Manchester United are now deadly serious about hijacking Chelsea’s move for an “incredible” £70m star, having identified him as a prime target for the January transfer window.

Man Utd looking to sign new midfielder amid Casemiro criticism

To say Man United are short on top-quality midfield options would perhaps be an understatement, with Ruben Amorim clearly not a fan of Kobbie Mainoo, given that the 20-year-old is still yet to start a Premier League match so far this season.

Casemiro, who is now set to exit Old Trafford, has also been slammed for some of his performances in recent weeks, with Wayne Rooney branding the Brazilian “silly” and “naive” after he got sent off at the end of the first half against Chelsea.

Near the end of the summer transfer window, ESPN commentator Ian Darke suggested Amorim needed to bolster his options in the engine room, but simply didn’t have the money available.

Darke named Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton as a suitable target for Man United, and according to a report from TEAMtalk, the midfielder has now been identified as a prime target for the January transfer window.

Indeed, it has been revealed that United are frontrunners in the race for Wharton’s signature, with INEOS deadly serious about hijacking Chelsea’s move for the Palace maestro, but a deal will be expensive.

Palace have slapped an asking price of at least £70m on the midfielder, who is likely to have no shortage of potential suitors, with Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool also named as interested parties, although the Red Devils are currently ahead of their two Premier League rivals.

"Incredible" Wharton would be statement signing for Man Utd

Man United proved they still have plenty of pulling power by beating Champions League Newcastle United to Benjamin Sesko’s signature in the summer, but their start to the campaign is unlikely to have done them any favours when it comes to luring the Palace star.

That said, if Amorim’s side were able to get a deal done, there is every indication the 21-year-old would be a fantastic addition, having received high praise from members of the media for his performances this season.

Man United focused on bringing in proven Premier League players in the previous window, and the Englishman fits the bill in that regard, having now made 42 top-flight appearances for the Eagles.

At around £70m, Wharton would be one of Man United’s most expensive ever signings, but there are clear signs he has what it takes to be a success at Old Trafford.

Better than Maguire: Man Utd have "a new hero" and he's Fernandes-esque

Manchester United claimed their first three points at Anfield in the Premier League since January 2016 when they beat Liverpool 2-1 on Sunday.

The Red Devils have had to wait almost a decade to taste success on the red half of Merseyside, but it came at a great time for Ruben Amorim and his side.

It took around one minute for the away side to take the lead in the match as summer signing Bryan Mbeumo swept the ball into the back of the net.

The Cameroon international has scored three goals in nine matches since his move to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window, and looks to have been a shrewd addition to the squad.

After missing out on European football and losing the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur last season, it was clear that the club needed to invest in the quality of the team.

The Red Devils went for quality over quantity in their recruitment during the summer transfer window, as they only made four significant additions to the squad.

Ranking Man Utd's summer outfield signings

Man United signed Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £62.5m, Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig for £66.4m, Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford for £71m, and goalkeeper Senne Lammens for £18.2m.

This means that the Premier League giants made three outfield signings to bolster their squad, but all three of them rank within the club’s nine most expensive signings in their history.

When ranking the three outfield signings, it is hard not to put Cunha at the bottom for now. That is not because he has been a flop or because he has performed poorly, but because he has yet to register a single goal or assist for the club.

As you can see in the table above, Sesko and Mbeumo have both notched two Premier League goals for the Red Devils since their big money moves to Old Trafford, whilst Cunha has yet to score from 1.53 xG.

Of the three attackers, Mbeumo is also the only player who has registered an assist for the club. He teed up Mason Mount for the opener in the 2-0 win over Sunderland before the international break.

Therefore, we are ranking the former Brentford star as the pick of the bunch from the three outfield signings, with Sesko in second place, and Cunha in third, for now. However, there is plenty of time left for that to change as the season progresses and players settle into the team.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Now that we have analysed the outfield signings from the summer window, it is only right that we assess how Senne Lammens has started his United career, as he is already looking like he can be a Bruno Fernandes-type player.

Man United's new Bruno Fernandes-type player

When United spent £56m to sign the Portugal international in January 2020, not many would have expected him to hit the ground running in the way that he did.

Bruno scored 12 goals and provided eight assists in 22 appearances in all competitions during his first six months in England, per Transfermarkt, which was a remarkable start to life at Old Trafford.

The United skipper has since racked up 100 goals and 87 assists in 299 appearances for the club in all competitions, per Transfermarkt, with his latest assist coming for Harry Maguire against Liverpool.

Maguire and Bruno combined to seal the three points for United on Sunday, but it was Lammens who Amorim should be thanking for his performance between the sticks.

The Belgian shot-stopper has made a lightning-fast start to life in goal for United, in the same way that Bruno made a lightning-fast start to life in midfield for the club back in 2020.

A first-choice goalkeeper is a crucial position for a top team. Manchester City have Gianluigi Donnarumma. Liverpool have Alisson, when he is fit. Real Madrid have Thibaut Courtois.

United have been stung by poor goalkeepers in recent seasons, with the likes of Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana, but Lammens looks to be someone they can rely on in net.

The signing from Royal Antwerp has prevented 2.19 goals in his first two matches, conceding one goal, and made several key stops against Liverpool, outperforming Maguire, who did not win a single ground duel, per Sofascore.

United’s central defender may have scored the winner, but his blushes were spared in the first half when Lammens brilliantly denied Alexander Isak, after the Swedish forward got the run on Maguire and Luke Shaw.

Lammens’ brilliant start to life at Old Trafford may also be a sign of things to come from him, if his statistics from the 2024/25 campaign, in which he was hailed as “phenomenal” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, are anything to go by. As it happens, Kulig called him “a new hero” for Old Trafford after his display on Sunday.

As you can see in the table above, the Belgian titan prevented a staggering 15.57 goals with his shot-stopping in the Pro League last season, around nine more goals than any Premier League goalkeeper prevented.

After just two appearances in the division, per Sofascore, Lammens ranks as the third-best goalkeeper in the Premier League for goals prevented, behind Dean Henderson and Robin Roefs.

This illustrates the immense impact that the 23-year-old shot-stopper has made since his debut against Sunderland, as he has won his side potentially four extra points with his impressive stops against the Black Cats and Liverpool.

United and Amorim will now be hoping that Lammens can continue to shine and win points for United between the sticks, in the same way that Bruno continued to win points with goals and assists after his excellent start in 2020.

USL Championship side North Carolina FC announce they will not play in 2026, set to focus on Division One application

USL Championship side North Carolina FC announced Tuesday that they will not compete in the 2026 season. The club will release all players, after the playoffs, allowing them to sign elsewhere for 2026 and beyond. As part of the move, North Carolina said their focus will shift toward preparing an application for USL’s new Division One league, set to launch in 2028.

Focus on Division One

The team has been a crucial part of the USL landscape since 2017 and won USL League One as recently as 2023. NCFC are locked in a playoff series with Rhode Island, where they have a 1-0 lead.

Despite those factors, the league backed North Carolina's decision in a statement: "North Carolina FC’s franchise agreement with the USL Championship concluded at the end of the 2025 season. The club will not compete in the Championship in 2026 and has formally applied to join USL’s new Division One league launching in 2028.

"The USL believes Raleigh has strong potential as a future Division One market if it meets the league’s professional standards, including a minimum 15,000-seat, purpose-built soccer stadium that will serve as an anchor for real estate development. We thank NCFC’s supporters and the Triangle community and look forward to advancing professional soccer in the region."

AdvertisementImagn'Resetting our men’s strategy'

The club said the reason for temporarily shutting down is to focus on the USL's new Division One setup, which will launch in 2028. That league is expected to include a promotion-relegation model that American soccer has yet to embrace.

Owner Steve Malik, who also owns NWSL's North Carolina Courage, explained the thought process for the team.

"Right now, it’s essential that we focus our immediate resources and energy on strengthening the foundation for professional soccer in Raleigh by continuing to invest in the Courage and resetting our men’s strategy for the future," he said.

Division One standards

Joining Division One, though, won't be easy. U.S. soccer has rigorous eligibility standards, including the size of the metropolitan area and stadium capacity. NCFC's current field, WakeMed Soccer Park, seats 9,200. The current minimum threshold is 15,000.

The immediate future

For all of the discussion about the future, though, NCFC are in the midst of one of their most successful seasons in recent memory. They finished third in the Eastern Conference and could advance to the next round.

The one demand Dyche made "clear" to agree Nottingham Forest deal now named

The demand Sean Dyche made “clear” in talks to take over as Nottingham Forest manager has now been revealed, as the Englishman closes in on a City Ground move.

Dyche agrees to take over as Nottingham Forest boss

Evangelos Marinakis has moved swiftly to replace Ange Postecoglou, who lost his job after the 3-0 defeat against Chelsea on Sunday, with it recently emerging that Dyche is set to take over as manager after holding positive talks.

The former Everton manager has a big job on his hands, given that he will be tasked with bringing a ten-game winless run in all competitions to an end, but the 54-year-old is used to working under pressure, having spent nearly two years working under difficult conditions at Goodison Park.

The Toffees had to deal with point deductions and a relegation battle during the Kettering-born manager’s stint on Merseyside, but he ultimately achieved his main goal, which was keeping the club in the Premier League.

That said, Everton ended up deciding the ex-Burnley boss wasn’t the right long-term fit, replacing him with David Moyes earlier this year, at which point his side were the second-lowest scorers in the top flight.

As such, there was uncertainty about whether Forest were targeting Dyche as part of a long-term project, or merely to guide them to safety, but Ben Jacobs has now revealed the Englishman requested it be the former before he agreed to join.

Dyche needs to make instant impact at the City Ground

It is a little early for Forest fans to be panicking, but there will certainly be a great deal of concern about the way in which they have started the season, having collected just five points from their opening eight Premier League games.

After securing a long-awaited return to Europe last term, the Tricky Trees spent heavily in the summer, so Marinakis would’ve been hoping to kick on, but it has been nothing short of a shambles so far, with Nuno’s departure proving to be a real blow.

The Forest owner’s decision to sack Ange after just 39 days has received criticism, with Jamie Redknapp and Steve Sidwell discussing the move on Sky Sports, but any manager who fails to win any of his first eight games is likely to find himself under pressure.

With Dyche well-known for a more pragmatic style of play, Nottingham Forest will be hoping to get back to basics and start grinding out more results, starting against FC Porto in the Europa League on Thursday.

Bayern could now give Chelsea a "huge" transfer boost as BlueCo eye "elite" player

Bayern Munich could now give Chelsea a real transfer boost as BlueCo set their sights on an “elite” player, according to a new report.

Chelsea secure dramatic late win over Liverpool

On the field, Enzo Maresca watched on as his side bounced right back from their dismal loss at home to Brighton by overcoming Premier League champions Liverpool 2-1 last weekend.

Maresca was sent off for his jubilant celebrations after teenage sensation Estevao Willian bagged a vital winner deep into added time, with the Italian sprinting in animated fashion to celebrate alongside his players in the corner.

Moises Caicedo also opened the scoring with one of the goals of the season so far, beating Liverpool’s Giorgi Marmadashvilli from long range just 14 minutes into the goalkeeper’s Premier League debut.

It was an evening to remember for the Blues at Stamford Bridge, and one which could highlight that the title race is still wide open as Chelsea look to build upon their deserved three points against Arne Slot’s side.

That being said, according to some reports, Maresca is personally unhappy with his overall squad choices right now and feels that a few key areas need to be reinforced (Simon Phillips) — with Chelsea expected to rectify certain positions in January.

The big one is, of course, at centre-back.

Maresca publicly stated that Chelsea need another body at centre-half in the summer, but despite allegedly holding talks with Dean Huijsen’s camp and considering other names, the Blues didn’t get one over the line.

Now, Chelsea and Maresca are reportedly in agreement that signing a new defender should be prioritised for January, with a goalkeeper also said to be on their agenda.

The West Londoners held negotiations with AC Milan over a deal for France number one Mike Maignan before the Club World Cup, but a major difference in price meant that Chelsea couldn’t find an agreement.

Chelsea are ready to go back in for Maignan and offer him a pre-contract in the winter (Graeme Bailey), as his contract expires at the end of 2025/2026.

However, they face stiff competition.

Bayern could give Chelsea "huge" transfer boost as BlueCo eye Mike Maignan

One of the clubs who are competing for Maignan is Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, but according to Football Insider and journalist Pete O’Rourke, Vincent Kompany’s side could hand them a “huge” boost by pulling out of the race.

This is because Bayern are in talks to hand long-serving keeper Manuel Neuer, who’s now 39-years-old, a 12-month extension that would keep him in Bavaria until 2027.

Chelsea could now face less competition in the race for Maignan as a result, which definitely would come as good news for Maresca.

Doubts have surrounded Robert Sanchez’s capability as Chelsea’s long-term number one, and you can make a case that they could need to upgrade with the addition of a world-class, elite-level keeper who’s capable of taking them to the next level.

Maignan, especially on a free transfer, fits the bill perfectly.

The 30-year-old Rossoneri captain has kept 64 clean sheets in 170 appearances for Milan, conceding just 173 goals in that time, which are solid numbers, and he’s just won France’s 2024/2025 Goalkeeper of the Season award.

A Ligue 1 champion with Lille and Serie A champion with Milan already in his career, Maignan’s top-level experience would also be invaluable to Maresca’s extremely young squad, making his signing an arguable no-brainer.

INEOS signing will soon "become the best in the world" at Man Utd

Reading too much into one albeit statement performance would be folly, although there were telling signs in Manchester United’s richly deserved 2-1 win away at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

In many ways, that victory marked a tale of the new signings, with there having been deeply different fortunes on either side.

In the case of Liverpool, Alexander Isak’s wait for a first Premier League goal for his new side continued, while fellow marquee arrival Florian Wirtz wasn’t even in the starting lineup.

At full-back, Miloz Kerkez was given a torrid time by the dynamic duo of Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo, with stand-in stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili also unable to prevent the visitors’ opener.

That might be a cynical view, although it’s difficult to ignore the contrast to Ruben Amorim’s new men, with Mbeumo opening the scoring inside 63 seconds, while Matheus Cunha also led the line impressively alongside him.

Although £74 striker Benjamin Sesko was a late arrival into the fray from the bench, goalkeeper Senne Lammens put in another assured performance, with the early signs suggesting that INEOS have finally worked their magic in the market.

Ranking every INEOS signing at Manchester United

There already looks to be a stark difference in quality between those acquired this summer and those brought in during the first window under the new regime a year ago, with the summer of 2024 having been particularly mixed on reflection.

While Matthijs de Ligt is an early contender for Player of the Season this time around – with Leny Yoro also likely to be a mainstay for the long-term at Old Trafford – both Joshua Zirkzee and Manuel Ugarte have slipped into the periphery under Amorim.

With just seven goals in 53 games for the club to date, Zirkzee – who has made just three league appearances in 2025/26 – looks destined to depart in 2026, while Ugarte’s diminishing status was evident in his role as an unused substitute in the Europa League final.

Rounding off that summer spree was £13m man, Noussair Mazraoui, a deal that still represents an undoubted bargain, even if the Moroccan international has been hampered by injury this season.

Heading into January then, the £1m dished out for Arsenal’s Ayden Heaven still appears another piece of astute business, even if the 19-year-old hasn’t featured since Grimsby, although the jury is out on the £30m signing of Patrick Dorgu, with the left-footer even ousted by Diogo Dalot on the left flank in recent outings.

Having looked abroad last summer, before turning to youth in the winter, the approach was far more sensible this time around, snapping up two Premier League-proven figures in Cunha and Mbeumo, after the pair netted 35 top-flight goals between them last term.

Sesko, at 22, is an expensive gamble, although with two goals in two games ahead of the Anfield trip, the early signs are promising, while, as for Lammens, he could quietly prove to be the pick of the bunch.

Man Utd could soon have "one of the best in the world"

Not every player has to arrive and explode instantly, with it perhaps more important not to make a bad first impression, than necessarily making a wholly positive, standout one.

Indeed, Lammens’ predecessor, Andre Onana, never truly recovered from his shaky showings from the off, having memorably been lobbed against Lens in pre-season in July 2023, left tangled in his own net on what was the Cameroonian’s first Old Trafford outing.

The ex-Inter man then escaped punishment for a last-gasp foul against Wolverhampton Wanderers on his competitive debut, while his third league appearance witnessed that comical dive to try and keep out Taiwo Awoniyi’s early strike. The list goes on…

To make matters worse, his deputy – Altay Bayindir – has fared little better over the last two years or so, producing a desperately tame punch to tee up Riccardo Calafiori’s decisive goal on the opening weekend this season.

The nervousness of both men was no good to those ahead of them, or those watching on from the stands, with both players and supporters alike having readily welcomed the quiet calm that Lammens has brought to the table so far.

A clean sheet on debut against Sunderland saw the young Belgian only forced into making three saves, although they were all decisive, having been met with audible cheers when plucking the ball out of the sky late in the first half.

There is a willingness for the 23-year-old to succeed, after such turmoil in United’s goalkeeping department in recent years, with Lammens’ outing again another reason for positivity.

Smart enough not to attempt to play out from the back needlessly – with 45 of his 46 passes having gone long – the ex-Royal Antwerp man did what was needed when called upon too, keeping out Isak’s strike from the angle in the first-half.

Having also narrowed the angle for Mo Salah’s wayward, near-post attempt – while plucking another ball from the air at one stage – United’s number 31 did everything that was asked of him.

There were no theatrics, no unnecessary Cruyff turns or errant passes. The new man – as a goalkeeper largely should do – almost went unnoticed for his all-round display.

It is of course far too soon to be popping any corks in celebration at such a signing, but for a fee of just £18m, the INEOS hierarchy might yet have pulled off another transfer bargain.

As journalist Steven Railston has relayed, one of Lammens’ former coaches, Hayk Milkon, believes that he can “become the best in the world” in his position, having already received the approval of his legendary compatriot, Thibaut Courtois.

Having been forced to witness the hapless chaos of Onana, Bayindir and even late-stage David De Gea in recent years, United could well do with a calming presence in the sticks again.

Hopefully, Lammens can be just that in the years to come.

PA Media have shared what they know from Newcastle about Sandro Tonali's injury

Midfielder Sandro Tonali was conspicuous by his absence as Newcastle trained on Monday morning ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League clash with Jose Mourinho’s Benfica.

The 25-year-old Italy international did not take part in the open section of the session in front of the cameras at the club’s Darsley Park base.

Tonali, a £55million signing from AC Milan during the summer of 2003, was replaced by Jacob Ramsey with 20 minutes of Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League defeat at Brighton remaining.

The Italian has become a key member of Eddie Howe’s midfield alongside Brazilians Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton since returning from his 10-month ban for gambling offences in August last year.

Tonali, a Carabao Cup winner with the Magpies in March, played all but a few minutes for his country in their World Cup qualifying victories over Estonia and Israel during the last international break.

Head coach Howe will hope to have him at his disposal on Tuesday evening as Newcastle attempt to add to the three points they collected from a 4-0 victory over Union Saint-Gilloise in Brussels earlier this month after losing their opening fixture to Barcelona at St James’ Park.

Man Utd women's player ratings vs Aston Villa: Red Devils' unbeaten run comes to a halt as Ella Toone & Jess Park fall short in blow to WSL title hopes

Manchester United suffered their first defeat of the WSL season, falling 1-0 to a spirited Aston Villa side. The visitors broke the deadlock in the 35th minute, with Miri Taylor firing in from the edge of the box for her first goal as a professional. The Red Devils were uncharacteristically listless in attack as Mark Skinner's side failed to score for the first time in the 2025-26 season.

United entered the game as heavy favourites, sitting in third at the start of the day's play and the visitors winning just once in their first seven league games.

Villa frustrated the hosts in an uneventful first half. Taylor's strike came after the hosts failed to clear their lines from a corner. The Scottish midfielder managed to keep the bouncing ball down, driving the ball into the corner of Phallon Tullis-Joyce's net.

Ella Toone produced United's first shot on target shortly after the hour mark. Her scrambled effort was gallantly cleared off the line by a lunging Villa defender. Skinner's substitutions could do little to influence the game, with United failing to create a clear cut chance until Rachel Williams' header was comfortable stopped by Sabrina D'Angelo in the 85th minute.

GOAL rates Manchester United's players from the Leigh Sports Village.

    Phallon Tullis-Joyce (5/10):

There was little she could to stop Taylor's effort as she was left unsighted by a sea of bodies from the uncleared corner. Dealt with Villa's otherwise tame efforts with minimal fuss.

    Jayde Riviere (6/10):

Provided some attacking impetus, but her delivery was inconsistent.

    Dominique Janssen (5/10):

    Maya Le Tissier (6/10):

Fierce battle with player of the match Kirsty Hanson. Stood up to the striker physically, and made some well timed recovery tackles.

Failed to push on with any threat. Pulled in the 55th minute.

    Jess Park (4/10):

    Fridolina Rolfo (4/10):

One jinking run in the first half resulted in a poor effort on her weaker foot. An anonymous performance otherwise. Pulled before the hour mark.

    Subs & Manager

    Melvine Malard (6/10):

Provided a physical presence in the box that almost lead to a Toone goal. Her willing runs down the channel turned the Villa defence.

    Anna Sandberg (6/10):

Retained possession well in the final third. Her floated cross for Williams could have set up the break through.

    Leah Galton (5/10):

One headed effort screwed harmlessly wide. Little to talk about otherwise.

    Julia Zigotti Olme (4/10):

Little to report. Tidy enough on the ball, but like many of her peers, provided no sustained attacking threat.

    Rachel Williams (N/A):

Could have done better with her headed chance as time expired.

    Mark Skinner (4/10):

His side looked a shadow of the attacking threat they have provided over the season to date. Some of the subs had an impact, but it wasn't enough to break down the visitors' low block.
