In Focus: Newcastle United look unlikely to secure Adrian this summer

According to reports in The Sun, Newcastle United are targeting a move for West Ham United goalkeeper Adrian if they fail to sign Napoli’s Pepe Reina this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Magpies manager Rafa Benitez is keen to bring in a new first choice stopper as he believes Karl Darlow, Matz Sels and Rob Elliot aren’t good enough for the job, and he has been heavily linked with Reina.

Benitez managed the 34-year-old at Liverpool and Napoli and wants to bring the Spaniard back to the Premier League, but if it isn’t possible then he will look for another keeper with a lot of Premier League experience and Adrian fits the bill.

Even though the 30-year-old only signed a new two-year deal at the London Stadium last month, it is unclear whether he will be number one under Slaven Bilic next season.

How did Adrian do this term?

It was certainly an up and down campaign for the Spaniard, who began the season between the sticks before being dropped in favour of Darren Randolph following a mistake at home to Stoke City.

However, later in the campaign Randolph started to make more errors and Adrian was reintroduced by Bilic.

The 30-year-old kept six clean sheets in 16 Premier League appearances, conceding 25 goals.

Would he be a good signing for Newcastle?

If Benitez wants an experienced Premier League goalkeeper then there is no doubt that there aren’t many better options on the market than Adrian, and he could certainly prove to be an astute addition.

While he may have made a couple of errors, the Spaniard has shown in the past just how consistently good he can be.

Is he really going to leave West Ham?

Having reclaimed his spot in the starting line-up at the end of the season as well as signing a new two-year deal, it would be a huge surprise if Adrian left the London Stadium this summer.

The only way he could go is if the east London outfit bring in a high-profile stopper and they are said to be eyeing Manchester City’s Joe Hart, also according to The Sun.

Hart’s arrival would surely push him back down to the substitutes’ bench at best, which could mean he looks to move on.

What’s the verdict, then?

Well, while there is no doubt that Newcastle would be interested in Adrian if they fail to sign Reina, it seems hugely unlikely that the Spaniard will be allowed to leave this summer.

Manchester United fans dismiss Anthony Martial to Arsenal rumour

According to reports in the Mail on Sunday, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will line up a £40m move for Manchester United winger Anthony Martial if he fails to bring top target Kylian Mbappe to the Emirates this summer.

The report states that the French boss has his heart set on a deal for the Monaco starlet, but he will switch his attentions to the Reds Devils attacker if he can’t get Mbappe.

Jose Mourinho would certainly have something to say about that considering his famously frosty relationship with Wenger, and he certainly wouldn’t be keen on selling the 21-year-old to Arsenal.

Martial scored eight goals and provided a further eight assists in 42 appearances in all competitions for United last season, and could have a big role to play next term following the departure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and with Wayne Rooney potentially on his way out too.

Man United supporters were quick to give their reaction to the rumour via social media, and they believe that there

is no chance of the deal happening.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Manchester United target closing in on Juventus move

Fiorentina winger Federico Bernardeschi is closing in on a move to Italian champions Juventus having handed in a transfer request amidst interest from across the continent.

The Italian international, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United, has agreed personal terms with the Champions League finalists with a view to making the move to Turin, according to reports from Gianluca Di Marzio.

However, there is still time for United boss Jose Mourinho to make a move given that, as per the report, there is still no agreement in place between the two Serie A sides, with Fiorentina holding out for a deal worth €40m, almost peanuts to those at Old Trafford these days.

The 22-year-old, who bagged 11 goals and four assists in the league alone last season, may not be of top priority to Mourinho, however, if the former Chelsea boss wants to land a deal he usually gets his way, meaning Ed Woodward and his team may well have their work cut out over the coming days and weeks.

In Focus: Liverpool need to stay strong as Barcelona bid for Coutinho

According to reports in the Daily Mail, Barcelona have made a £72m bid for Liverpool attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho, but the Reds are expected to reject the offer.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Daily Mail says that the La Liga giants are looking for a long-term replacement for Andres Iniesta – who is now 33 years of age – and they have identified Coutinho as the man to fill the void.

While their opening £72m offer is likely to be turned down by the Reds, according to the Daily Mail, it is unlikely to be the final offer from the Catalan side, as they look to strengthen their squad following a disappointing season last time out.

Having agreed a new deal with the Brazilian last season that is due to keep him at Anfield until 2022, the Daily Mail says that the Merseyside outfit feel the offer falls below their valuation of the 25-year-old – especially in the current market when prices are hugely inflated.

How did Coutinho do last season?

He was once again influential for the Reds and is undoubtedly one of their most important players.

The Brazil international, who played as more of a left winger for Jurgen Klopp’s side last term, scored 14 goals and provided a further nine assists in 36 matches in all competitions, while he missed seven Premier League matches because of injury between December and January.

How big a miss would he be for Liverpool?

He would be a huge miss.

While the Reds have attacking talents like Adam Lallana, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, Coutinho is still one of their biggest attacking threats from a creative and goalscoring point of view, and he is capable of linking up brilliantly with the aforementioned trio.

Could he really go this summer?

If Liverpool want to progress, they simply have to keep hold of Coutinho otherwise it will send out a message to their players and their rivals that they aren’t ambitious.

While the Merseyside outfit are likely to stay strong, if the 25-year-old begins to agitate for what is a tempting move to the Camp Nou, then it may well be a different story altogether.

What’s the verdict, then?

Well, while Barcelona are ready to big bid for Coutinho, a move away this summer at least looks unlikely as the Reds are determined to keep hold of their Brazilian star.

Chelsea fans already regret selling Matic to rivals this summer

Manchester United’s start to the English Premier League season couldn’t have gotten off to a better start on Sunday, thrashing visitors West Ham 4-0 at Old Trafford.

It was a statement of intent from Jose Mourinho’s men as they put the Hammers to the sword, with their new summer signings shining brightly throughout the 90 minutes.

Former Everton striker Romelu Lukaku grabbed the headlines with a superb double but the performance of Nemanja Matic also caught the eye with pundits and fans raving about his display in the middle of the park.

Watching those two do the business for direct title rivals couldn’t have been fun viewing for Chelsea supporters, many of whom have been scratching their heads thinking of reasons why Matic was sold to United. Lukaku is of course a former Blues player too and many fans fancied him to make a move back to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Chelsea fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on it all…

Manchester United fans have a new favourite at Old Trafford

Manchester United made a huge statement on Sunday with a thumping 4-0 win over West Ham United in their opening fixture of the 2017/18 Premier League.

Goals from new boy Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba gave them the three points in a supreme performance that had pundits and fans enthusing all day and night.

Lukaku of course was the star of the show, scoring twice on his Premier League debut with incisive finishes past goalkeeper Joe Hart. The first was a smacking finishing from a Marcus Rashford through ball and the other one of his tower trademark headers from a set-piece.

He’s now well placed to bang them on a regular basis and justify every bit of the massive transfer fee that saw him make the move from Everton this summer.

As you can imagine, Man United fans were over the moon with his impact so early in his Red Devils career and took to Twitter to share their thoughts on it all…

PL25: High culture from Bergkamp heralds arrival of Arsenal glory days

To celebrate 25 years of the Premier League each week at Football Fancast we’re going to be looking back at a memorable game that took place on the corresponding weekend. This time out we swoon to three moments of magic from a non-flying Dutchman.

Imagine being the Leicester City fan on August 27th 1997 who, at two goals down with just a few minutes to go, decided to leave early and ‘beat the traffic’. This, after all, was a Wednesday night game and his son had school in the morning, a son who was presently tugging on his coat sleeve and walking at an exaggerated slow pace as they navigated the alleyways around Filbert Street. With the naivety of adolescence the kid had desperately wanted to stay; to soak up every last minute of the thunderous atmosphere and root for an unlikely comeback. But the game was over; the father’s decades of watching football told him that, beaten for the first time this season by a terrific Arsenal side with clear title aspirations. That French fella, the weird one with the bookish round glasses who talked about yoga while sounding like Yoda, evidently knew how to put a team together.

As their car honed into view the man reflected on the evening’s entertainment feeling strangely upbeat despite the loss. Leicester had just gone toe-to-toe with the champions tonight and matched them in every department, with their new summer signing Savage from Crewe particularly impressive and quickly forging a midfield trio with Lennon and Izzet that won’t get bossed around by many. It’s a shame that he looks like a poodle in heat but still, a fine purchase for just four hundred grand. And better yet he had been privileged enough to personally bear witness to the majesty of Dennis Bergkamp, the only opposition player that it’s okay for everyone to adore. The non-flying Dutchman’s second goal was all about acceleration, anticipation, and touch as he hared into the box to dink the ball over Kasey Keller. His first was a sumptuous curler; the type that he presumably did every day in training but amidst the frenetic chaos of a live match amounted to visual poetry.

‘That’s something to tell the grandkids one day,’ the man thought to himself. ‘I was there when the great Dennis Bergkamp scored two wonderful goals at Filbert Street’.

As he opened his car door both father and son were startled as the nearby ground exploded into life. Heskey, in the 86th minute, had slid home from close range.

“Don’t worry son, it’s just a consolation,” the man said, and then patiently explained what a consolation was as they drove through the quiet streets to home.

Back in the ground carnage ensued as electric, invigorating belief swept through the Leicester players and fans. Every awarded set-piece was greeted with a throaty roar that would send an army scurrying for cover. Every attack was accompanied by the palpable tension of a cliff-hanger.

As the enthralling game seeped into injury time a cleared home corner was swiftly returned to Foxes stalwart Matt Elliott who found himself in acres of space. He took aim, fired, and saw the ball ricochet off a trailing leg inside David Seaman’s far post. “They just don’t know what a lost cause is,” screeched Clive Tyldesley, barely audible in the exorcism of ecstasy around him.

Amazingly, incredibly, there were another two goals still to come, in the 93rd and 96th minutes respectively and abandoning conventional narrative it is necessary here to begin with the sixth and final twist in a quite extraordinary climax. Once again Leicester were behind. Once again it was a lost cause. Once again a defensive stalwart – this time the hard as oak Steve Walsh – sent the 21,000 present into a bewildered mess of strangulated vowels.

Prior to that though, in between the heavy metal football and drama cranked up to 11, Dennis Bergkamp coolly switched records and played a spot of classical music. Describing the Arsenal striker’s third in mere words – additionally completing the finest hat-trick any IQ is capable of imagining – is like trying to trap a butterfly in a dirty milk bottle: it only eludes and besides it has no business being diminished in such a way. So let’s dispense with any further flowery prose and simply say that deep into added-on time Bergkamp plucked a long-ball from David Platt with his right foot; turned a charging Elliott with his left foot; allowed the ball to roll down his body and then side-footed an arrowed shot high and wide of Keller.

The American keeper – who became a dad to twins the previous day – later admitted to being distracted by incredulity as the forward enacted his balletic vignette. Bergkamp himself later admitted it was his best goal in an Arsenal shirt. Considering the lofty standard of the competition that is high praise indeed.

The beautiful ‘winner’ – for that is what it was at the time of its execution – won that year’s Goal of the Season award by a country mile. What’s more it’s doubtful that anyone who left before the final whistle on that memorable evening ever departed prematurely again.

What happened next

Arsenal did indeed finish as Premier League champions and won the FA Cup too for good measure. The glory years under Wenger had begun.

Leicester ended the campaign in mid-table, a solid foundation from which a successful era under Martin O’Neill was built.

Manchester United fans delighted to see the return of Ander Herrera

Manchester United travel to Stoke City in the English Premier League’s late Saturday kick-off and fans can’t wait to see the Red Devils in action after the international break.

United have started the season superbly with a 100% league record and Jose Mourinho has named the team that will attempt to make it four wins from four.

The Portuguese has made a number of changes with the most prominent being Ander Herrera getting his first start of the season in place of Juan Mata, who drops to the bench.

With a heavy schedule and important fixtures ahead, Mourinho will have to utilise the full depth of his squad and can count himself lucky to be able to bring in quality like Herrera from the sidelines. He’s been one of United’s most consistent players over the past couple of seasons.

The Spaniard is a popular figure with Red Devils fans and they’re excited to see him take on Stoke, reacting on Twitter to his inclusion…

Liverpool supporters split when it comes to £28m-rated midfielder

Replacing Steven Gerrard as Liverpool captain was never going to be the easiest of tasks, and it has not been straightforward for Jordan Henderson.

The 27-year-old has been Liverpool skipper since Gerrard left the club, but it would be fair to say that many feel that the Englishman is fortunate to be in such a position.

Henderson, who is valued at £28m by transfermarkt.co.uk, has been criticised by Liverpool fans for some lacklustre performances this season, but the midfielder was impressive in Saturday’s 3-2 win at Leicester City.

Indeed, the England international scored Liverpool’s third goal at the King Power Stadium, while his driving runs from midfield caused the home side all sorts of problems throughout the Premier League clash.

Liverpool supporters are still undecided when it comes to the midfielder’s influence, however, with many claiming that he goes missing when the team is not performing.

There are a lot of Liverpool fans that rate Henderson, but it seems that he will never be able to win over everyone.

Arsenal fans heap praise on Jack Wilshere after stunning Europa League performance

Arsenal continued their great start to the Europa League campaign with a tough victory against Red Star in Belgrade on Thursday evening.

With ten minutes to go, it looked like the game would fizzle out. However, with time running out Jack Wilshere played a sublime ball to Theo Walcott, who found Olivier Giroud, who in turn found the net.

And it was the man who set the first goal up who received much of the praise from Arsenal fans after the game…and that man is Jack Wilshere.

[ad_pod id=’leo-vegas’]

The 25-year-old has had the most disappointing spell of an injury ravaged career during the last few months. Having made no impact at Bournemouth and yet more injuries meant that Wilshere started the season back at Arsenal with no idea as to what his future holds.

Tonight’s performance however, was simply incredible. Wilshere dominated the midfield from start to finish and was the sole reason that Arsenal left Belgrade with all three points.

After the final whistle, Arsenal fans took to Twitter to heap praise onto Wilshere…
