Leeds simply must take a punt on Mo Eisa

Leeds are absolutely desperate for a new goalscorer this summer, and reports suggest they are lining up a bargain swoop for Cheltenham sensation Mohamed Eisa.

What’s the story?

According to reports, Leeds have joined Portsmouth and Sunderland in the chase for Cheltenham’s Eisa.

The 24 year-old made the switch from non-league football to League Two last summer and grabbed 23 league goals in his first season with the Robins.

Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds have been clearing out a lot of the unwanted “dead wood” at Elland Road this season, and while he may not be enough to carry the goalscoring load alone, Eisa has tons of potential.

Sunderland made a bid of around £1m this week, but the League Two side will expect around £1.5m for a deal to be done, which could be a bargain for Bielsa.

£1.5m well spent?

There were plenty of issues at Elland Road last season, but the biggest problem was the side was simply unable to score the amount of goals required to mount a promotion charge. Matej Vydra has been heavily linked this summer, but wage demands seem to have stalled that deal, and a bargain swoop for Eisa could actually be quite the coup.

The Sudanese born striker has absolutely electric pace, a surprising wiry strength, and at 6 ft tall he is good in the air as well. Most of all, he is wonderfully clinical in front of goal, where his stats speak for themselves.

He scored a combined 68 goals in 99 appearances with his last two non-league clubs, before firing in 23 goals in 45 League Two appearances last season. He also scored a hat trick in a pre-season game this week, and you can see the third goal here.

The 24 year-old has of course drawn comparisons to Jamie Vardy due to his breakout from the non-league game, and Leeds fans will no doubt remember Jermaine Beckford very fondly, who scored 71 league goals at Elland Road after making the jump from non-league.

Bielsa will almost certainly demand a marquee striker signing, and with just one year of professional football under his belt Eisa is not that. However, bringing Eisa in to compliment the new number nine would be an excellent coup, and he could become a cult hero at Elland Road. He can’t be any worse than Caleb Ekuban.

Kieran Gibbs could form a solid partnership with Kenedy next season

Newcastle United are not in desperate need of a new left-back with Paul Dummett firmly in charge of that particular spot under Rafa Benitez, but the fact Kieran Gibbs could be seeking a move away from West Bromwich Albion is certainly something to consider before the window slams shut.

According to a recent report from Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Torino has emerged as a surprise contender to sign Gibbs this summer, and the club has already made contact with the Baggies regarding a potential deal.

Following the Baggies relegation from the Championship last season, discussion over Gibbs’ future has surprisingly slipped under the radar, despite the fact he is far too good to be playing in the second-tier of English football.

Meanwhile, the arrival of Kenedy at Newcastle has given the Magpies a huge boost ahead of the new campaign and the supporters will be hoping he can thrive on the left-side of their midfield once again.

With Paul Dummett behind him, Kenedy would undoubtedly have a sturdy defensive player whom is willing to throw everything on the line for the club, but he is lacking a level of composure and quality in the final-third which Gibbs could provide.

And with that to consider, Kenedy should encourage Rafa Benitez to rival Torino’s bid for the 10-cap England international this summer in order to increase Newcastle’s threat by welcoming the forward-thinking full-back on a cut-price deal.

Gibbs possesses a natural desire to maraud forward and his exploit his technical quality further up the pitch, and the fact Kenedy prefers to drift inside onto his favoured right-foot would provide Gibbs with plenty of space to exploit on the overlap next season.

Dummett’s rise through the Newcastle academy system has made him something of a cult figure on Tyneside, but the emotionally-charged opinion of the supporters should not influence Benitez in the transfer market, as he has a golden opportunity to sign a quality alternative with the potential to build a solid understanding with Kenedy down the left-wing.

Alfie Mawson could be Fulham’s best signing yet

Fulham fans will be confident that their side can avoid relegation from the Premier League next season.

The Cottagers finally returned to England’s top division after a four-year absence by defeating Aston Villa in the play-off final. In addition to keeping the majority of their key players, Fulham have strengthened significantly during the summer transfer window. As a result, they look well equipped to beat the drop next year.

Star forward, Aleksandar Mitrovic, completed a permanent move to Craven Cottage after impressing on loan. Fulham also managed to lure Jean Michael Seri from Nice despite interest from Arsenal and Chelsea. Their latest recruit could be the final piece of the puzzle.

To sure up his defence, Slavisa Jokanovic spent £15m to sign Swansea City defender – Alfie Mawson. Valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, the Welshman impressed for the Swans last season despite their relegation. He played in every single Premier League game last season and showed he was too good to be playing at Championship level.

Mawson will add some much-needed steel into the Fulham backline. His ability in the air is his biggest strength – winning 3.2 aerial duels per game last season (WhoScored). Mawson also chipped in with two goals meaning set-pieces could be a huge factor in their bid for survival. The 24-year-old still has a lot to prove at Premier League.

But for £15m, Fulham have made one of the signings of the summer.

Arsenal fans debate whether transfer window has been successful

When Unai Emery was appointed manager of Arsenal, all eyes were on him.

Not only did he have the pressure of succeeding Arsene Wenger, the Spaniard had to quickly make his mark in the transfer window.

The former Paris Saint-Germain boss started off by boosting the team’s defensive elements.

Stephan Lichtsteiner signed from Juventus on a free transfer before goalkeeper Bernd Leno joined from Bayer Leverkusen.

Centre-back Sokratis was brought in to help improve the club’s back line, but Emery did not bring in another defender that some fans had hoped for.

Lucas Torreira was the only first-team midfielder to be bought, while Matteo Guendouzi also signed on the dotted line, but the teenager is expected to be one for the future.

Rumours were flying around that Emery was keen to recruit a new winger, and numerous names were linked, but a transfer never materialised.

The Gunners will kick off their Premier League campaign with a huge test against Manchester City on Sunday, but before that ArsenalFanTV asked supporters how they would sum up the transfer window.

Tottenham ready to loan Josh Onomah out which casts doubt over long-term future

According to a report by Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Josh Onomah looks set to spend another season away from the club on loan.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the 21-year-old joined Aston Villa on a season-long loan deal last term, and with it looking as though he will struggle for regular minutes under Mauricio Pochettino during the current campaign – having missed pre-season through injury – he could drop down into the Championship once again.

The Argentine boss handed the 6ft 1in tall Onomah his first-team debut in 2015, but he has so far failed to kick on even though he made 37 appearances in all competitions and scored four goals for Villa.

That said, a lot of those outings came from the substitutes’ bench as he struggled to make a consistent impact under Steve Bruce, and Pochettino confirmed in his pre-match press conference earlier this week that Onomah could leave on a temporary basis again.

According to Football.London, he said: “He’s a little bit behind the rest but we’re working and I’m going to decide if he’s a player that can stay with us or maybe if we believe he can play more, to find maybe some alternative for him to play more than last season. But to try for him to be more involved than he was last season at Aston Villa.”

Is this the right call by Pochettino?

It probably is, yes.

The fact that the 21-year-old was not a regular fixture in the Aston Villa XI last season suggests that he isn’’t ready to play a key role for Tottenham yet either in the Premier League and the Champions League.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”279706″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Danny Rose To PSG or Schalke”]

While he is still young, another loan move away is a likely sign that he is not going to make it at Spurs, and if he does join a team on loan in the next couple of weeks he will likely be wanting to impress them to try and secure a permanent move away from the north London outfit.

These Arsenal fans would be happy to see Ramsey go

The contract saga surrounding Aaron Ramsey at Arsenal continues to rumble on, though without a solution in sight.

The Welshman is now in the final year of his current deal with the Gunners, who he joined from Cardiff City as a teenager a decade ago.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”279788″ player=”12034″ title=”Emirates Exit For Emery’s Egyptian”]

In his time with the North London club, Ramsey has won three FA Cups – scoring the winning goal himself in two of the finals – and has made over 300 hundred appearances in the famous red and white.

Now, however, the 27-year-old’s time at the Emirates Stadium could be drawing to a close, with the midfielder set to be able to depart on a free transfer next summer unless he agrees new terms with Arsenal, or is sold, before then.

The club are keen to retain Ramsey’s services, but as of yet, no agreement has been reached and time is beginning to run out.

These Arsenal fans on Twitter are growing tired of the saga, and would happily see the club cash in on Ramsey whilst they still can…

Meyer’s assessment of Crystal Palace’s squad is both right and wrong

Despite their recent 2-0 loss to Liverpool, Roy Hodgson will be relatively pleased with Crystal Palace’s start to the season.

And, while the south London club were unable to take anything away from the game against Jurgen Klopp’s men, the performance they put in that day was decent.

Most importantly, though, Roy Hodgson’s men already have their first three points on the board having beaten Fulham 2-0 on the Premier League’s opening weekend, and new signing Max Meyer believes his side are more than capable of having a good season.

The Breakdown

Speaking to Crystal Palace’s official club website, Meyer said: “I really think we can have a good season. We have plenty of quality and a strong squad – when you compare it to Schalke, it’s as strong, or maybe even stronger.”

Having finished in second place behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga last season, describing Crystal Palace’s squad as strong as Schalke’s is an exaggeration.

However, £16.2m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Meyer is still right in thinking Crystal Palace can have a good season with the squad they have.

Up front may be a concern with Christian Benteke continuing to misfire but, elsewhere on the pitch, Hodgson has some solid options.

Luka Milivojevic offers plenty of power in the middle of the park, while Mamadou Sakho presence in defence elevates Crystal Palace to another level.

And, in Wilfried Zaha, the Eagles arguably have the best player outside of the Premier League top six.

Ultimately, with the squad they have, Crystal Palace should really be aiming for a finish in the top half of the Premier League table.

Darren Moore should seek to lure Reece Oxford to West Brom

According to a recent report from Marca, Reece Oxford could be set for a move away this month. The 19-year-old currently plays his football at Premier League side West Ham having come up through the ranks at the East London outfit, although just 17 senior appearances for the Hammers suggests that he is still a way away from commanding regular football under Manuel Pellegrini.

And recent reports suggest that La Liga club Eibar are keen on landing the £4.5 million-rated sensation (as per Transfermarkt), in news which should be of interest to West Brom manager Darren Moore, as he must seek to rival the Spanish side in a bid to upgrade on current central midfield option Chris Brunt.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, Northern Ireland international Brunt has been an outstanding servant to West Brom over the years, but much of his best football has come when playing out wide, with the 33-year-old contributing the vast majority of his 47 goals and 82 assists for the Baggies from those wide areas.

Yet manager Moore has utilised Brunt in a more central position in all five of West Brom’s Championship matches so far this season, and it’s fair to say that the 33-year-old hasn’t looked overly comfortable in that position.

And given just how important it is to have genuine quality in the middle of the park, the Baggies boss should be seeking to improve that area of the field in the last knockings of the loan window – Oxford’s arrival may well do just that.

The 19-year-old has been tipped for some time now to be the next big-thing in English football after making his West Ham debut at the tender age of 16, but with just 17 first team appearances for the Hammers, it hasn’t quite worked out like that.

And with difficult loan spells at Reading and Borussia Monchengladbach, there are some doubts creeping in about the youngster, but what isn’t in doubt is that he has all the attributes to be a serious upgrade on current West Brom midfielder Brunt.

The England Under-20 international has a great aerial presence and is deceptively quick across the ground, but importantly he has genuine quality with the ball at his feet, with Oxford calm and composed in possession, and able to pick a pass.

Add in the fact that he is adept at centre back as well, and it’s clear that Moore would benefit greatly from having a player like Oxford at his disposal, at the same time giving the West Brom chief an upgrade on the unconvincing Brunt in the heart of his midfield.

Chelsea should target this £35m-rated Spaniard is Marcos Alonso leaves the club

Chelsea will be looking to continue their excellent form after the international break, with four wins from four under new manager Mauro Sarri so far.

With the Blues looking impressive, losing players in January or even to agreements inbetween will not be on the agenda for Sarri, but one player who continues to be linked with a move back to Spain is left back Marcos Alonso.

The Spanish star has become one of the best fullbacks in the Premier League, and his goalscoring and assist exploits are something fantasy football managers around the country cash in on.

However, if Alonso was to leave, then we at the Tavern believe that Valencia fullback Jose Gaya could be the perfect replacement.

The 23-year-old, a Spanish native himself, has turned into one of the stars of La Liga over the last few seasons, and is highly rated both by club and country.

Valued at £35m, Gaya would be a superb signing for the Blues if a deal could be struck, especially if Alonso does end up making a move back to his homeland.

Quick, brilliant going forward, and someone who could very well be a like for like replacement for Alonso, Gaya would be an excellent addition at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea fans, what do you think? Will Alonso leave? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Fofana’s words on Dembele show the true extent of Lyon’s robbery on Celtic

Celtic went into the international break on a good note after beating rivals Rangers 1-0 in the Old Firm derby.

Off the field, however, things were not as positive with Moussa Dembele leaving the club on deadline day for Lyon.

And Dembele’s former team-mate at Fulham Seko Fofana has since come out to question Celtic’s dealing of the transfer.

The Breakdown

Speaking to L’Equipe (via Sport Witness), Fofana said: “I am surprised that clubs didn’t come to take him [Dembele] before. I was told that he cost Lyon €20m (actual price was €22m), but Moussa is worth at least double.

“He is a complete attacker, who can use his head, left foot, right foot and also defend. His delivery, he’s clean technically, he is a big, strong guy.”

With what he was worth to the club and the potential he possesses, at £19.7m (via Sky Sports), Celtic were the team to come out worse in the deal.

In this current climate, the Bhoys definitely should have got at least £30m for Dembele’s services. It was only a while ago where the Frenchman was being touted with a £40m move to Chelsea (via Sky Sports).

Of course, having only had two years remaining on his Celtic contract and at the time the club decided to sanction the sell, it was always going to be an uphill task of getting anything close to that sort of money.

That being said, the £19.7m received still feels like an incredibly undervalued fee for someone of Dembele’s talent and, ultimately, a fee in a deal where Brendan Rodgers and Peter Lawwell have come out second best.
