Liverpool signing Van den Berg would be a setback for Hoever

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to BBC Sport, Liverpool are interested in signing teenage centre-back Sepp van den Berg from PEC Zwolle.

What’s the word?

Ahead of a Premier League season where Liverpool will be hoping to go one better than their second place finish in 2018/19, there isn’t a huge amount of work to do in the transfer market.

The Reds have a fairly settled squad and after achieving 97 points and winning the Champions League, there aren’t too many reasons for going out and spending.

However, they could be about to land their first signing of the summer according to the BBC.

They claim that Liverpool are keen on adding 17-year-old Dutchman Van den Berg to their team. Despite his age, he played 15 times in the Eredivisie last term, cementing himself as a rising talent.

Danger for Hoever?

Liverpool’s defence at the moment is one of the best around. The imperious Virgil van Dijk has been joined by the consistently reliable Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, so it would be difficult to dislodge any of them as Liverpool aim to challenge for further major honours.

As a result of their settled backline, the promising Ki-Jana Hoever already faces a battle to gain first-team minutes.

The 17-year-old can play at right-back or centre back but it was in the middle where he earned his senior bow against Wolves last term. He’s also played in that role in the UEFA Youth League.

Therefore, if Van den Berg arrives, it would be incredibly detrimental for his development.

It appears unlikely that Liverpool’s defence will be broken up anytime soon and therefore game time is likely to be restricted considerably for their rising stars.

If you consider Trent Alexander-Arnold’s impact at full back too, Hoever isn’t expected to be able to stake much of a claim there either.

It would be shrewd business to poach one of the Eredivisie top young talents away but they’d be putting another of their academy prospects in danger of not fulfilling his potential by doing so.

The pair of them may well go onto establish a fine partnership at youth level, but it’s doubtful that they’d ever fit into the same Liverpool side.

Jurgen Klopp’s defence is particularly young as it is, so Hoever would only find things even more challenging if their reported target arrives.

Aston Villa fans react to image of John Terry during training session

[ad_pod ]

On Friday, Aston Villa’s official Twitter account posted an image of John Terry taking part in a training session, insisting that the 38-year-old has “still got it”.

Now assistant manager at Villa Park, Terry turned out as a player for the club during the 2017-18 campaign before hanging up his boots.

Villa had both Tyrone Mings and Axel Tuanzebe on loan during the 2018-19 campaign but seemingly face a tough task to bring either back to the club this summer.

As a result, some Villa fans have claimed that Terry might be needed as a player, whilst others have suggested that he could still contribute.

The former England captain made an incredible 759 appearances during his professional career, with over 700 of those coming for Chelsea.

In his prime, Terry was outstanding but age has caught up with the Barking-born man.

Thogden challenged himself to DM 100 footballers on Instagram. Find out who replied in the video below…

As a result, the former defender will more than likely have to make his present felt from the touchline rather than on the field.

Not worth that: Man Utd should make an example out of Marcus Rashford

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun, Manchester United may be forced to pay £350k-a-week to Marcus Rashford in order to keep him at the club and away from the clutches of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the England international reportedly wants to stay put at Old Trafford and play for United – where he spent years in the academy – but would not find it a hardship to go and play for one of the big boys in Spain.

Alexis Sanchez’s £505k-a-week earnings have skewered the wage structure at United, and Rashford knows that all too well – he is asking for £350k-a-week due to his importance in being Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s main striker.

Could United be in the hunt for an £85m blockbuster signing this summer? Check out the video below…

Madrid reportedly invited Rashford’s brothers – who are his advisers – to a game, whilst Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde is a big fan of the 21-year-old.

He should be made an example out of

21 years of age. 13 goals last season. And on current earnings of £45k-a-week.

Rashford is still a baby in the footballing world and a club of United’s stature should not stand for being held to ransom by a footballing child.

Some of the club’s supporters have already grown tired of Rashford’s ineffective performances out on the pitch – he ended the campaign in miserable form with no goals in his final eight games.

Other than Sanchez’s huge earnings, there is no valid argument for Rashford to earn that much – it would place him on £150k more per week than Mohamed Salah earns in comparison.

£150k-a-week, coincidentally, is just £30k less than what PFA Player of the Year Virgil van Dijk earns. How on earth can Rashford justify asking for so much?

With just 12 months left on his deal, United shouldn’t pander to the youngster’s demands and should make an example out of him by allowing him to leave the club.

He could easily be replaced, and is simply pushing his luck in asking for so much money. He may be a local lad, but United can’t be pushed around by sentiment either.

Manchester United’s Juan Mata still remains a key figure on and off the pitch

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

One of the most amiable footballers in the game, Juan Mata has proven himself to be a fantastic servant to English football with both Chelsea and Manchester United.

The Spaniard is a real fan favourite at both clubs due to what he does off the pitch, but has seen his role at Old Trafford become more and more limited over the last couple of seasons. The 31-year-old made 32 appearances across all competitions in the last campaign, but was never really considered one of the first names on the team-sheet.

But perhaps more than anything it is his off-the-pitch contributions that United are in dire need of. The former World Cup winner with Spain is a bona-fide role model and carries himself in the best possible light.

Indeed, after seeing Mata sign a new contract with the club earlier in June, Solskjaer said: “Juan is the ultimate professional and one of the most intelligent players I have worked with. He is a great example to our younger players in his approach. He understands what it means to be a Manchester United player and has embraced everything about this great club.

“As well as everything he brings on the pitch, we have some fantastic young players here and I know that Juan’s vast experience will help them to reach their potential over the coming seasons.”

Such is the high regard Mata is held with inside United, that he was named captain for both of the club’s opening pre-season games against Perth Glory and Leeds. As Solskjaer looks to add a youthful edge to the side, Mata’s experience will be of a major help to get the best out of players like Mason Greenwood, Tahith Chong and Daniel James, amongst others.

Amidst all the drama surrounding Paul Pogba’s career at the moment, Mata’s responsibility, humility and professionalism stand out like a sore thumb. Whilst he may in the twilight years of his career at Old Trafford, there is no doubting that Mata remains an integral part of the club’s future.

Jack Clarke takes to Instagram after completing Tottenham Hotspur move

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Jack Clarke from Leeds United.

The 18-year-old talent has now joined the club and has signed a contract that will bind him to Spurs until 2023. However, he will now first return to Leeds in the Championship, where he will spend the 2019/20 season on loan.

Upon making the deal official, Clarke did not waste any time before posting a snap on

/Bzaj0IlhHAz/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram showing off his new kit.

While he was understandably eager to express his excitement for the future in north London, he also had a profound message for Leeds supporters as he underlined his desire to help the Whites win promotion next season.

Leeds’ stature and history combined with Marcelo Bielsa’s refreshing influence have facilitated the notion that the top-flight is, as Clarke says, where Leeds belong – one which was supported last season by Henry Winter, Chief Football Writer at The Times.

Shortly after he submitted the post some of his friends from his time at Leeds, including Izzy Brown and Tom Pearce, along with Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson, posted messages of support for the youngster.

Just last season, with Leeds, he made 25 appearances in all-competitions, scoring and assisting twice in the process and injecting sporadic bursts of excitement from the flank.

His impact under Bielsa’s watch was one of the major sub-plots at Elland Road last season, so it’s no surprise that he has garnered interest from a club of Tottenham’s prestige.

Still, this will be a big step up and another season in the Championship might do him the world of good before he enters the fray in the Premier League.

West Ham fans react as Trott leaves club on loan

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United announced on Monday that young goalkeeper Nathan Trott would be spending the 2019-20 campaign on loan with AFC Wimbledon.

Trott made 13 Premier League 2 appearances for West Ham’s Under-23 side last season but is yet to make a first-team outing for the Hammers.

The 20-year-old penned a new three-year contract at the London Stadium in March.

And according to a statement on the club’s official website, he ‘is considered one of the country’s brightest goalkeeping prospects’.

Trott will certainly be looking to gain some valuable experience during his time out on loan, where he will link up with former Irons coach Wally Downes.

The West Ham fans have been on social media offering their views on the update and many believe that the loan spell will stand the stopper in good stead moving forward.

The Young Lions suffered a big defeat at the hands of the French team in the opening game of the U-21 European Championship.

Two late strikes, including an own goal, took away all of England’s points and now they face two crucial games against Romania and Croatia as they chase a chance out of the group stage.

Ryan Sessegnon played 75 minutes of that first clash before he was subbed off. Most of the players have remained quiet after that game but Fulham’s star has now posted an

If they want to advance, winning the next game is an absolute must for the Young Lions and Sessegnon knows this, sharing some motivation for his team and the fans.

The snap has received good feedback from the fans who are still hopeful England can pull through, despite their rocky start to the tournament.
